GOSHEN, Conn. — One of Connecticut’s most well-known Boy Scout camps is getting a fresh start as it approaches its 65th anniversary, thanks to the work of one of its own.
Camp Strang in Goshen, a longtime destination for scouts across New England, recently underwent renovations led by Lawrence Janesky, an Eagle Scout and the CEO of Connecticut Basement Systems.
Janesky stepped in after getting a call from his friend Joe Andreo, Housatonic Council scout executive, who told him the camp was in need of serious repairs.
“Joe called me and said the camp needs some work,” Janesky said.
After more than six decades of summers, the campground required upgrades that the council couldn’t tackle financially. Andreo said the work Janesky completed in two days would have taken the council “four to five years” to finish on its own.
Janesky and his team of volunteers reroofed 18 buildings, painted desks, and reinsulated and resealed buildings. The effort was all part of preparing the camp for decades of future scouts.
“I don’t know the people who are going to come through this camp,” Janesky said. “I don’t know what’s happening in their lives or what will happen. But I know that whatever they learn in Scouting will impact their life forever.”
Camp Strang is open year-round, and visitors do not need to be scouts to reserve cabins or explore the grounds. Click here for more information.
