They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Burial ground gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. “Dear Rick, Over the past three plus years, my father Joseph Ceuch has lived at home assisted by the caregivers from your company Always Best Care of Greater Bristol. This letter is a personal thank you from my father and the entire Ceuch family on how your caregivers treated and attended to my father during this time. The caregivers became part of our extended family who shared in countless family events resulting in beautiful lasting memories. Caregivers Frances Boateng, Jeremy Turner, and Yanice Hernandez were awesome in their care of my father. I want to especially acknowledge Francis as a person who went above and beyond his responsibility and became part of the Ceuch inner circle. It was not uncommon for Francis on his off days to stop by during a family picnic to say hello...he is truly loved by my father. Again, I want to thank you for the loving care your caregivers provided my father. I would highly recommend your company to anyone interested in having a caregiver attend to a loved one. Thanks again”

“Heather, I just wanted to thank Always Best Care in helping to provide care for my step father, Daryl. It's unbelievable how the progression of his illness happened so quickly, however, Always Best Care was always ready to provide the level of care he needed as it increased. Most importantly, I'd like to thank his aide, Sue Malasics. She was wonderful to Daryl and took great care of his needs. I knew I did not have to worry with Sue there with him. She was always cooking wonderful homemade meals and desserts and I was happy to see how happy she made Daryl. I think she is a wonderful asset to Always Best Care. Should I know of anyone needing help in the future, I would recommend Always Best Care and Sue Malasics.”

“Our sister, Barbara has early-onset dementia , and was in sudden need of a personal care assistant until placement in a quality skilled nursing facility became available. We reached out to home health care agencies in her local area but, by this point, had already worked with several agencies for med reminders for Barbara (and 24/7 care for our Mom in another area of CT) and were a bit skeptical that that we’d find one that could provide consistent quality of care. When I spoke with Rick Downey of Always Best Care Senior Services in Bristol, he conveyed both confidence in his knowledge of health care and empathy in understanding the frustrations that families experience when seeking quality care for their loved ones. We were next contacted by their care coordinator,Heather Kozikowski, who came to our sister’s home to conduct an assessment and further explain the services offered by Always Best Care.A further testament to the exceptional quality of Always Best Care is the service and care we’ve received after Barbara is no longer a client; our thanks to Always Best Care for the excellent care of our sister, and the peace-of-mind it afforded our family knowing that she was in such kind and competent hands!”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Washington Depot, CT?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Washington Pizza House or visit Calhoun-Ives Historic District, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Washington Depot, CT, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your CT's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Washington Depot, CT understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Washington Depot, CT

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Washington Depot, CT

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Washington Senior Center
  • Brandywine Living at Litchfield
  • Chestnut Grove
  • The Cascades Assisted Living
  • The Ivy at Watertown Assisted Living and Memory Care

Over this past Summer, my wife's job transferred her to The Frederick Gunn School in Washington. We'd never seen the campus, so we took a ride in, and that's where the beauty begins. If you come to Washington from the North, your ride down 47 into town takes you along deep, tree-lined, curvy roads. It's the same if you come from the East or West along 109. From every direction, you will pass gorgeous farms, and untouched land, so incredibly rare. As you arrive in the center of this small town of just over 3,600 residents, you'll see why it inspired Amy Sherman-Palladino to model Stars Hollow after it.

Washington doesn't have a national brand in sight. You'll never find a McDonald's in the Depot, or a Cumberland Farms, but you will find a thriving bookstore - The Hickory Stick. It's a wonderful store that's been in operation for over 70 years. I love the hyper-local focus championing local authors and artists throughout the shop. The employees are also wonderful, happy to engage with you about the area and what they have to sell. Washington Supply Company was our next stop, and they've been in business since 1893, the rich history of the company is preserved with really cool photos and relics in their new Outdoor Living Center. I never expected a gorgeous home decor store in Washington Depot, but they have it.

In the area around Town Hall, Washington Food Market was our first stop, it's a small, independent grocery store that carries a lot of high-end items. I scored a jar of Honestly Heirloom Marina Sauce from The Farm in Woodbury, it was very good. Washington Art Association & Gallery was not open at the time, but they appear to have a very extensive collection to enjoy. Restaurants? Oh there are a few, but the most famous is G.W. Tavern, named after George Washington himself, his portrait hangs over their gorgeous fireplace. G.W. has an extensive menu, and they serve dinner, but we settled in at a breakfast/lunch-only place The Po Cafe.

No Home Depot, no Taco Bell, no vape and smoke shop on any corner, yet a local merchant is right around the corner with anything you need. That's why Washington, Connecticut is a true hidden gem.

When the tractor ran over Bob Futh, he ended up with his lung poking through five broken ribs, along with a broken breastbone.

At 81, he’s doing fine, back on the tractor at 45-acre Starberry Farm in Washington Depot, tending to his apples, apricots, berries and other fruit.

One “sore subject”: The peaches didn’t come in this year.

And he credits a case of polio at 9 years old with teaching him how to cope with pain and immobility. Futh and his wife, Sally, are in good spirits these days.

“Thanks goes to the doctors and nurses and everybody in the trauma room” at Hartford Hospital, Futh said. “I just made a dumb mistake.”

Back on Nov. 18, 2021, his mistake was to think, once he realized his John Deere tractor was rolling, that he could climb aboard and reset the brake.

“It was one of the few times when Sally and I are not working together, and I wanted to get the sprayer ready for winter and give it one last clear water wash, and I drove into a horse pasture that had a hydrant where I could do that,” Futh said.

“I pulled up on the handbrake, and when I turned around I saw the tractor moving, so … I tried to jump up on the step, climb up on the tractor and I missed,” he said. “And right behind the step on the tractor is a big 1,000-pound wheel, and my feet dropped down and got caught onto that wheel immediately because it was rolling. So I was just stuck there with the tractor going over from toes to head.”

Surprisingly, he said, Futh didn’t feel much pain. “It was probably shock,” he said. “The first thing I could think of is, I need some help. And I got my cell phone out and I guess I was just crazily punching any buttons.”

That set off the alarm at the dispatching service. “He asked where I was calling from and I was able to give them all that information,” he said. “It wasn’t more than a few minutes and some of our local friends showed up already.”

So did one of his horses.

“One of our retired broodmares that was in the field came over and was licking the dirt and blood off my ear when the rest of the crew got there,” Futh said. “A few people were alarmed about me not minding a 1,200-pound horse standing with their hoofs only inches from my head. But she knew there was a problem.”

Futh never lost consciousness. He credits wet soil that sank a bit under the weight of the tractor for his not being crushed. “But the smartest thing I did that whole day, I guess, I told them to put the bird in the air. They know what that means,” he said.

What it means is to summon Life Star, which airlifted him to Hartford Hospital. Unfortunately, Sally Futh had fallen and cut her leg and was brought to New Milford Hospital, so she couldn’t join her husband.

“I was up in the orchard working to prepare an order of apples,” Sally Futh said. “And fortunately one of our neighbors had a pager and heard the call. … And my first question to the ambulance was, ‘Is he alive?’ and they said, ‘Oh yes.’”

Still, she was “distraught, to say the least.”

“I was shocked and I didn’t know what was going to happen next,” Sally Futh said. “Bob was in amazingly good spirits. I could see that he had gotten badly damaged. We had no idea of the extent of it.”

“We were dealing with a lot of chest trauma,” said Dr. Daniel Ricaurte, a trauma surgeon with Hartford Hospital’s Chest Wall Injury Center, who was concerned about whether he could keep Futh from needing a ventilator, because once on the machine it’s difficult to come off, especially at an advanced age.

“So first off, as always, is identifying all the injuries, trying to put the puzzle pieces together and figure out what the next best step is,” Ricaurte said.

“In Bob’s case, the images showed that he essentially had a significant number of rib fractures. His sternum, the breastbone, was broken as well,” he said. “He had collapsed lungs on both sides. He had fluid around his lungs, which was blood, essentially, and so the first 24 hours was trying to stabilize Bob.”

Once he was stabilized, Ricaurte realized that Futh’s lung was protruding out of his chest like a small balloon, just under the skin.

“He unfortunately was one of the unlucky few,” Ricaurte said. “His lung managed to find a way through the break in the ribs. And though that wasn’t apparent from day one, when he came in, it became more obvious and it tends to happen as the ribs get more displaced and he struggles to breathe and cough.”

Before he could undergo surgery to reduce the lung and put it back inside his chest, Futh needed an operation to repair his breastbone. Both bones — the manubrium at the top and the sternum — were broken, displaced and putting pressure on his heart, Ricaurte said. A plate was placed on the breastbone.

The second surgery repositioned Futh’s lung and put plates on his ribs, which required thoracic, trauma and plastic surgeons from the Chest Wall Injury Center. “He does have hardware in his chest that Bob keeps as a souvenir from the time he spent with us at Hartford Hospital,” Ricaurte said.

But because the injury was so traumatic, Futh had to go on a ventilator for a couple of days.

“The good news was, obviously, Bob was a fighter and he was able to get through this, and he eventually came off the breathing machine, spend a few days in our intensive care unit under a lot of sedation and a lot of trying to maintain his blood pressure where it needed to be, make sure his heart was beating as it should be,” Ricaurte said.

He emphasized how devastating Futh’s injuries were.

“We always say that mortality increases significantly by every rib fracture an elderly patient has,” Ricaurte said. “And so by the number of rib fractures and the severity of his trauma, a great number of patients, unfortunately, would have succumbed to his injuries.”

Futh said when he had polio, “I learned then what it was like to have pain, what it was like to not be able to move around, not be able to walk, be able to play the way kids that age could. And I really think that that experience helped me along with this one. Not as as much as our friends up in Hartford.”

Now, Futh said, “The end of the day comes up in a hurry. But I can still get up at 5 o’clock and stay awake until 8:30 or 9 (p.m.).”

“He won’t admit that age has a little more to do with what happened to him, I guess,” Sally Futh said.

“It’s very moving to see and hear Bob and his story because, unfortunately, with what we do we don’t always see the side of the good ending,” Ricaurte said.

“And so to see someone like Bob fight through his injuries, to motivate himself, his family, to keep pushing … it’s warming to know that we were able to help him,” he said.

The 2024 Firelight Event — formerly known as The Gilmore Girls Fan Festival — is making its grand return to Connecticut this fall.

The three-day event will take place Oct. 18-20 in Guilford. A convention for diehard fans of the “Gilmore Girls,” that charmingly, chatty, romantic comedy family series from the 2000s, the Firelight Event seeks to happen in towns reminiscent of Stars Hollow, the quaint fictional Connecticut hamlet where the show takes place. The convention comprises dozens of events, including talks and concerts featuring “Gilmore Girls” cast members, a costume contest, trivia matches, presentations by the hosts of “Gilmore Girls” podcasts and other experts on the show, crafts and activities, a “town hall debate” as happens on the show, local tourism opportunities and more.

“I drove the entire coast of Connecticut,” said Texas-based fan convention organizer Jennie Whitaker. “Then I drove into Guilford and thought “What a cool town!”

“Firelight” in the event’s title is a reference to the Firelight Festival, an annual celebration of the founding of Stars Hollow. Historical recreations, parades and other elements of the festival amplify some of the differences and disputes among the townsfolk while also showing Stars Hollow’s community spirit.

In the decade that Whitaker has been holding “Gilmore Girls” fan gatherings, there have been six different locations. The first event was held in Washington Depot. The second, third and fourth were in Kent. Then there were several years in Unionville, Canada, where parts of the show had been filmed. In 2020, during the COVID shutdown, the convention was held virtually, with many more “Gilmore Girls” cast members participating than has happened at the live events. The festival returned to Kent in 2021, and for the past two years, it was held in Ogonquit, Maine. Now comes Guilford, the first shoreline town to host a Firelight Event.

Stars Hollow is often presumed to be in Litchfield County. In interviews, the show’s creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has mentioned Washington Depot as one of the inspirations. But it’s said in numerous episodes that Stars Hollow is half an hour’s bus ride from Hartford (where Rory attends a private school). The distance from Washington Depot to Hartford is over an hour. Other popular Stars Hollow candidates are much closer (West Hartford) or just as far (New Milford).

There are plenty of small towns around the state that could fit the bill, but it’s widely believed that Litchfield County is the best overall fit for the general small-town feel of the show. Working with a “superfan” of the show, a story on the Travel Channel website listed “23 New England Towns That Might As Well Be Stars Hollow,” only eight of them in Connecticut: Durham, East Haddam, Essex, Kent, Old Lyme, Wallingford and Washington Depot.

The vagueness of the actual location is a boon for Whitaker, who doesn’t have to book a specific inn in a specific town for her convention to feel authentic. There just needs to be a warm small-town vibe.

“There’s always some type of connection that makes it feel real,” Whitaker said.

The environment, even if not necessarily accurate, is crucial, because the Firelight Event isn’t the kind of convention that seldom leaves the ballrooms or conference rooms of the hotel in which it is staying.

“We want to be a boost to the community, benefit the town,” Whitaker said. “We never wanted to do this in just a hotel or a ballroom. It doesn’t seem right, since the show is about the town and the community. We ask ‘How can we support the small businesses in these towns?’ We use local vendors. We’re not a big convention, so we can put up a tent or find a place that will fit us all. This year we’ll be using the Guilford Fairgrounds barn and the Guilford Green.”

Once a town has been picked for the Firelight Event, Whitaker meets with local businesses, the chamber of commerce and other organizations to see how they can work together most effectively.

Actors associated with “Gilmore Girls” have been special guests at the events, which draw anywhere from 500 to 1,500 fans a year. “We’ve had from 12 to 20 cast members every year,” Whitaker said. “When we had the virtual convention, we had 40. We support the actors’ other projects.”

As for the fans, “we see all kinds of pairings: mothers and daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters. Once we had a couple on their honeymoon,” Whitaker added.

Whitaker didn’t become a “Gilmore Girls” fan herself until a couple of years after the show ended its run and lived on in syndicated reruns.

“I was watching the news and it came on afterward,” Whitaker said. “I watched an episode from 2005. This was pre-streaming, so I started recording it on TiVo. I told my husband about it and we started watching it together. I watched it out of order for a year. Then eventually I bought the box set. Then Netflix set it up.

“It’s easy to watch. I fell in love with the way the story goes. It’s sweet. No murders,” she said.

The idea of holding a fan convention came from learning more about the “Gilmore Girls” fan community. “My husband and I run a small public relations firm in Texas. We’d never run a festival before,” Whitaker said.

There were over 150 episodes of the original series, the first six seasons airing on the WB network and the seventh on The CW. The final episode aired in 2007. A four-part miniseries reunited much of the cast in 2016. It was that miniseries that helped inspire the fan convention.

“The revival was the impetus for why we wanted to start it,” she said.

A weekend pass to the Firelight Event, which includes all events plus an official Fan Fest T-shirt, costs $395 and is available through the Fan Fest Society website at thefanfestsociety.com/.

Anyone obsessed with Gilmore Girls has at least heard whisperings about the tiny pastoral town of Washington Depot, Connecticut. It's a place so special that just one trip to its local inn (well, really it's a luxurious spa/hotel, but we'll get to that in a moment) inspired Amy Sherman-Palladino to create the fictional world of Stars Hollow. What you might not realize is that Washington Depot is worth visiting even if Gilmore Girls means approximately nothing to you. At least if your interests include gorgeous autumnal colors, adorable woodland chipmunks, local farmer's markets, and a much-needed escape from city living.

Need more convincing? Here's everything I'm trying to say summed up in one picture:

Since I am certain you have just booked your flights/train tickets/rental car, here are my suggestions for where to eat, sleep, and meander once you get there.

Where to Stay

The choice is obvious: The Grace Mayflower Inn. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's literally the inspiration for Gilmore Girls—but even if you don't fan-girl over that, you'll fan-girl over the picturesque grounds nestled amongst woods peppered with orange, gold, red, and green. Not to mention the pool flanked by a landscape straight out of a Bob Ross painting. And the chipmunks! Did I mention them? Basically, if Autumn were a physical place, it'd be this hotel.

The Grace Mayflower is definitely a luxurious stay and its prices reflect that, but if you're in the position to throw down a little extra cash during your quick weekend jaunt and you need a break from rentals, this is a must.

P.S. The breakfast is exquisitely yummy and did I mention there's a spa? Yep, I sure did, but it's worth mentioning again.

Where to Eat and Drink

How! Much! Time! Do! You! Have?! First of all, let's talk about the farmer's market in Washington Depot, where I came away with almost all of this fruit due to getting overly excited:

This sweet little town also has some cute cafes (shout out to Marty's), but for a truly iconic meal you're going to want to venture out slightly further into Litchfield County—the area of Connecticut that includes Washington Depot. I don't mean to be extra, but the meal I had at Arethusa—a farm-to-table restaurant in the town of Bantam—was truly better than most of the meals I've eaten in my ten years of living in New York City. Also, there's an ice cream place next door. Just saying.

And while sadly I didn't have time for this due to getting a massage and being lazy going on a hike, you can visit the beautiful farm where their ingredients come from.

What To Do

Remember that Instagram from up top with the pretty purple flowers? That was taken at a garden called Hollister House that I stumbled upon and spent about two hours roaming around in. This place was like a magical wonderland, full of floral twists and turns. Go here, I beg you.

Another recommended stop for when you aren't busy binge eating fresh fruit, wandering gardens, and living a life of fall bliss? Kent Falls State Park, a short drive away from Washington Depot and a genuinely breathtaking experience:

If you're willing to drive a little further, the covered bridge in Cornwall (not to mention Cornwall Bridge Pottery, where all my mugs comes from) is lovely. If you prefer to stay around Washington Depot, check out The Hickory Stick Bookshop, as it's supremely cozy.

Helpful Tips

1. If you're driving from NYC, or really anywhere on the east coast, leave early. VERY EARLY. Traffic getting to this sweet corner of the world is a nightmare, and there's nothing worse than arriving at your getaway in a bad mood.

2. I'm not going to lie, the cell phone service around Washington Depot isn't great. In fact, in some areas it's non existent. Of course there's wireless in most spots, but prepare to unplug for a couple days. (Not a bad thing!)

3. Bring good shoes. Hiking didn't happen for me (as I mentioned, I'm lazy), but there's definitely opportunity for nature walks around Kent Falls State Park, or even just a climb around the grounds at the Mayflower Inn. Either way, the situation can get muddy real fast. For evidence, please discuss the situation with what remains of my heels.
