Backpocket Brewing to close Coralville taproom, move production to Waterloo

Coralville brewery Backpocket Brewing is moving productions to Waterloo and closing its taproom at the Iowa River Landing, located at 903 Quarry Road.

Along with PeaceTree Brewing, which it acquired in November 2024, the beer brand will be setting up at SingleSpeed Brewing Co.’s Waterloo taproom at 325 Commercial St. at the beginning of 2026.

The city of Waterloo has approved the development agreement, and the combined operation will be branded as The Brewery @ WonderBread – a nod to the taproom’s original tenant, Hostess’ Wonder Bread bakery.

“This is a win for Waterloo, for Iowa craft beer, and for every fan who has supported our breweries along the way,” Dave Morgan, founder of SingleSpeed, said in a release. “By bringing these teams together at our WonderBread facility, we’re building a destination that showcases the best of Iowa beer and sets the stage for future innovation.”

Backpocket and PeaceTree Brewing owner Aaron Vargas said with the decline of alcoholic consumption, breweries nationwide have been looking for more efficient ways to keep operating.

Last year, Backpocket joined a brewery collective representing several Iowa cities. The brewery collaboration began with joint procurement for better supplier negotiations and expanded to unified sales and distribution, eliminating duplicate sales representatives while creating efficiencies and a single point of contact for distributors, Mr. Vargas said.

“Ultimately, we started looking at numbers and looking at efficiencies (and realized) that consolidation was the answer,” he said, adding, “I think this is just the future of where the market’s going, and (it’s) ultimately going to allow us to focus in on things that we’re strong (in) individually, but then also make us better together. And I think for us, we’re going to be able to find lanes of expertise (as) some of our team integrate into their team and be able to thrive, which is pretty exciting.”

According to the release, SingleSpeed will acquire Backpocket Brewing’s intellectual property.

None of the products will change, Mr. Vargas said – flagship beverages such as Backpocket’s Slingshot and PeaceTree’s Blond Fatale will still be available at the markets where they’re currently sold.

“There might be additional offerings as we move into this more efficient operation,” he said.

Backpocket will begin moving equipment from its Coralville location in November and will close the taproom sometime in mid December, putting the building on the market. The brewery’s taprooms in Dubuque and Johnston will remain open.

CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG) - Halloween decorations are a typical part of the celebrating the spookiest day of the year, one eastern Iowa man has taken his display to the next level by using artificial intelligence.

ProCircular CEO Aaron Warner has been tinkering away and creating advanced Halloween decorations for a decade now. He always tries to one-up himself and this year he managed to do just that, as he has programmed AI to bring his display to life.

Several of the characters on his front lawn-turned-graveyard are able to talk to and heckle guests. A giant skeleton poking out of the garage will hurl insults at passersby while Count Orlok will recount his life hundreds of years ago.

While Warner handles the bulk of the programming, bringing these monsters to life is a family operation.

“I get a lot of help from my family, my kids are volunteers,” Warner said. “It’s a good way to relax when you’ve had a challenging day to get in and get your hands dirty.“

Warner has even heard the bots talking to themselves.

“It’s crazy,” Warner said. “I got to listen to them have a conversation all night last night from my garage.“

While these displays take a lot of work, it’s a fun passion project for Warner as he gets to share the fun of Halloween with others.

“It’s just a chance to come down, maybe scare the kids a little bit, look at some cool stuff,” Warner said.

He’s also excited to further explore how AI can be used.

“Think about technology in a different way,” Warner said.

CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG) - The demolition process has started for the “Gather Iowa” development on the Coralville Strip.

The 10-acre area is located on the southeast side, near the University of Iowa softball and track facilities. It will include new retail space and apartments in phase one and a hotel and affordable housing in the second phase.

According to city administrator Kelly Hayworth, the development has been in the works for quite a while.

“We’ve been working with different developers on this for over ten years,” he said. Now, Rael Development Corporation is tackling the project.

The apartments, which are already approved, will have more than 290 units and are aimed at young professionals.

Hayworth said the council approval process is underway for phase two to begin next summer.

“So all of this should be completed in 2027,” he said.

The second phase will include 34 units of affordable housing, but those income levels are still being discussed with the developer and the city.

“[The mayor and council] wanted to see the redevelopment, but they wanted to make sure that we still offered those opportunities for people to be able to afford to live here,” said Hayworth.

Melanie Bimson, an economic development program manager with Greater Iowa City, says having a range of housing available for different income levels helps spur development.

“Anytime we can have more dense housing throughout the community in ways that make sense for the community I think is great,” said Bimson.’

The area will also include recreational and community spaces to serve the various apartment complexes.

“Throughout this community, we need a lot of different housing options,” said Bimson. “This is going to be an opportunity to have housing throughout all different income sectors.”

This area was previously home to businesses such as the Middle-Eastern restaurant Tabooleh and various small groceries - which took time and collaborative efforts to relocate, says Hayworth.

Technical concerns like the floodplain location and electric transmission lines running diagonally across the acreage also caused delays to the redevelopment project.

The area is part of a “strategic investment district” named by the Greater Iowa City team last November.

The Sycamore Mall area on the east side of Iowa City and Cherry Street in North Liberty are two other nearby strategic investment districts.

Greater Iowa City is working with city officials and residents in these areas to stimulate economic growth.

“This is just going to be a catalyst project in the area. It can be an anchor for our strategic investment district,” said Bimson. “It’s just taken some time to re-imagine the space and we’re excited to see it go up.“
