A mansion in Toddville was just listed for $10.2 million, making it the most expensive home for sale in Iowa. That price tag includes nearly 80 acres of private woodland in rural Linn County, a giant lake right next to the house and — perhaps the most interesting part of it all — international artifacts woven into the mansion itself.
The original owners, the Christophersons, spent years traveling around the globe sourcing decorations and materials for the home they dubbed Castle Lake Manor. There's a Louis XV marble mantel sourced from Montreux, Switzerland, made around 1875. Another is a carved verde marble Rococo mantel from Paris. There's stained glass from Uruguay.
And for the pub in the lower level? It's hand-carved mahogany, transported from Sheffield, England.
Castle Lake Manor already looks impressive from the photos. But when real estate agent Holly Lovell stepped into it for the first time, she was "completely mesmerized."
The Christophersons "really just had a spectacular taste in history and design and European flair," Lovell said. "There's so much love put into this."

The previous record for the most expensive home in Iowa was a $9.5 million home sitting on the Okoboji lakefront. That house was also sold by Lovell in 2024.

What's inside Castle Lake Manor, the $10.2 million mansion for sale in Toddville?
The current owners, Dawn and John Ameling, bought the five-bedroom house in April 2020 for just $2.7 million, according to the Linn County Assessor's Office.
Since then, the Amelings have completely renovated the portico to the house. They've updated the grounds, added new flooring throughout the home and fixed the roof, Lovell said. Most recently, the Amelings have updated the pool and spa systems.
Overall, the effect has "the permanence and character of a European estate," the pitch book states.
The property's 13,411 square feet covers a kitchen, catering kitchen, home theater, pub, billiard/family room, recreational spaces, fitness rooms, drawing room, a great room, a grand entrance and grand hall, a formal dining room, mudroom, powder rooms and six bathrooms.
It also includes nine fireplaces and a 12-car garage.
Why are people interested in a $10.2 million mansion in Iowa?
Lovell said many people have been asking her why they should be considering a home in Iowa when that same money could buy a mansion on the West Coast.
"There's so many things that Iowa has to offer," Lovell said. "Iowa City was just in the 100 top places to live for 2026, so it [the manor] has access to so many different great hubs, while you're getting the privacy and a place that you just can't build anywhere else."

While her phone has been ringing constantly with interested buyers, Lovell imagines that someone who appreciates the roots of the Midwest would particularly enjoy this mansion.
So if you're looking for a place to be alone in nature but still have access to broader society, Iowa could be the place for you.
