What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Newton, IA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Newton, IA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your IA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Newton, IA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Heading into July 9, Iowa Interstate Railroad LLC (IAIS) leaders were anticipating a twofold celebration to mark major milestones for a new rail park in Newton, Iowa. Instead, only one landmark achievement was hailed that day— but a crucial one at that.

Representatives from IAIS, Jasper County, the city of Newton and other stakeholders on July 9 commemorated the Iowa Economic Development Authority's (IEDA) site certification approval for major portions of the Newton Rail Park.

Last year, the railroad and county reached a public-private land agreement to establish the park. Other partners in the endeavor include the Jasper County Economic Development Corp., Newton Development Corp., Alliant Energy, ITC Midwest and Black Hills Energy.

Situated along the Interstate 80 corridor in the heart of Iowa's agriculture, manufacturing and clean energy region, Newton Rail Park offers rail and highway access to such major Midwest markets as Chicago, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Omaha and St Louis. The park is directly served by IAIS, a more than 500-mile regional that interchanges with all the Class Is.

The park offers 405 acres zoned for agriculture and heavy industrial uses within Newton and Jasper County. The size of each of the 10 or 11 expected sites is expected to range from 20 acres to 50 acres, says IAIS Senior Director of Economic and Site Development Jim Bowman.

Park partners are counting on the IEDA site certification to help in attracting potential tenants seeking shovel-ready sites with all utilities already available and/or connected, such as gas, electricity, sewers, water lines and telecommunications.

"Site readiness is the name of the game. Why? Then a company can get to the production stage and make money quicker. They can get ahead of their competition," says Bowman. "The bottom line is the certification helps with readiness."

The IEDA takes about a year to complete the site certification process to review engineering studies, environmental and archaeological reviews, utility assessments and mitigation planning documents. A certification means necessary developmental studies have been completed, utility infrastructure plans and cost schedules are in place, land control has been secured and land-use regulations, such as zoning, have been addressed.

The certification process is overseen by Quest Site Solutions, a national site selection firm that aims to ensure every site meets or exceeds high certification standards.

"There are rigorous standards for the sites," says Bowman.

In June, the IEDA approved site certification for the 478-acre Webster City Gateway Industrial Park in Hamilton County. The park is near Interstate 35 and a Union Pacific Railroad mainline.

In the Newton Rail Park, agricultural chemical manufacturer AU Solutions plans to purchase the first site for a new $17 million facility. The company had expected to hold a groundbreaking ceremony on July 9, but at the last minute decided to postpone the event.

"They jumped the gun a bit. More work needs to be done with the 40 acres," says Bowman. "They are still doing their due diligence [and] drilling down further into the site."

The Newton facility eventually will become AU Solution's first Iowa plant. The company currently maintains manufacturing facilities and its headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In the meantime, IAIS and its partners are working with a pipeline of prospects interested in locating in the park, says Bowman.

"There are half a dozen solid projects that we are seriously looking at," he says.

Potential tenants are intrigued by the park's favorable geography in central Iowa, access to a major interstate highway and all the Class Is, 24/7 rail service and local dispatching, and proximity to Des Moines, says Bowman. The park is 30 miles east of Des Moines, a large city that can be tapped to build a workforce, he adds.

Another attractive attribute: IAIS' $9 million Renewable Energy Logistics Center, a transload facility located within the park. That makes the Newton entity the only industrial park in the state with a built-in railroad terminal. The logistics center was built with wind energy uses in mind, but any product can be transloaded there, says Bowman.

The park's unique attributes are somewhat of a rarity, says IEDA Communications Manager Tina Hinz.

“For a property to be both rail-served and to have a robust certification with thorough environmental due diligence, control documentation and master planning — that makes the property a novelty,” she says.

In terms of the volume the park could generate for IAIS, hundreds of cars likely are the initial target, Bowman says. But the potential is strong that volume could eventually grow to thousands of cars.

NEWTON, Iowa —

Some rural Jasper County residents said they felt trapped Monday after a crash involving a car and a train blocked what is their only way in and out of their neighborhood for hours.

The blockage happened after a pickup truck rear-ended a car stopped at a flashing railroad crossing at the Highway T12 railroad crossing near North 39th Avenue E near Newton, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators said the impact caused the car to be pushed onto the tracks just moments before it was struck by a train.

The driver jumped out of the vehicle while it was being pushed down the tracks, sustaining injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, according to investigators, and was taken to the hospital. Authorities said the pickup truck driver, 24-year-old Eric Ramos-Lucas, was charged with failing to stop in assured clear distance.

While first responders were at the scene, a first responder vehicle became stuck and disabled on the tracks. That delayed the opening of three crossings until approximately 7:10 p.m.

For residents living north of the tracks along Iowa Street, the crash created a much bigger problem.

Wayne Kono said he and his wife were in their car just east of the crash site when they realized the train had stopped.

“I mentioned to my wife, I said, we just missed the train, and it was moving down toward us, and all of a sudden my wife says, well, the train has stopped,” said Kono.

Kono said they waited for a couple of hours to get back home.

“We sat for two-and-a-half hours waiting to be able to get across the train tracks to our house, because we do not have a back access to our home anymore, because the county has taken the bridge out,” he said.

Residents said the 90-year-old bridge over the North Skunk River was demolished earlier this year after county officials voted to remove it because of damage. Last summer, Jasper County officials told KCCI it would cost $2.5 million to replace the bridge safely.

“We have no escape route, as to speak as to get into town other than across the railroad tracks,” said Kono.

Mindy Adkison, who lives in one of about 15 homes north of the tracks, said trains regularly block Iowa Street, sometimes for several minutes at a time. Monday’s crash, she said, showed how serious the situation can become.

“We had a young man out here that couldn’t make it to his job and so he lost that pay. We had someone that needed to get her son into town and couldn’t get him there,” said Adkison.

“There has got to be some kind of funding to help our community so we are not stranded out here in case of an emergency or anything lesser,” said Adkison.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said that if a train is blocking access during a medical emergency, deputies can contact the railroad company to see whether the train can be moved quickly or whether cars can be detached. The sheriff’s office also said responders can work to connect residents with paramedics and, if needed, request an air ambulance from the Des Moines metro area or Knoxville.

Still, residents said they are concerned about response times and have continued pressing county leaders for another way out.

“We’ve asked about an alternate access — like maybe another road — maybe across here to the next road that will give us another access point out,” said Adkison.

Residents, including Adkison and Kono, spoke at a Jasper County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday morning about the issue.

KCCI did reach out to the three supervisors. The board chair tells KCCI: “Jasper County’s options are limited when it comes to constructing an alternative route. This accident brought renewed interest from the Iowa Street neighborhood group in finding a solution. The county has considered different options which all comes down to funding.”

NEWTON, Iowa —

With the 2026-2027 school year set to begin on Aug. 25, construction on a Newton school building is facing uncertainty due to unresolved disputes between contractors.

R3 Roofing, the subcontractor responsible for completing the new entryway, interior vestibule, and wall panels around the gym, has stopped work, citing issues with the primary contractor, Graphite Construction Group.

"R3 Roofing is legally authorized to stop work, which it has done at this point until the disputes are resolved," said Keisha Douglas, legal counsel for R3 Roofing during a school board meeting Monday night.

Douglas further explained, "There are several outstanding disputes between Graphite and R3. Escalated to a level where Graphite has repudiated its contractual obligations under the subcontract with R3, which means Graphite has indicated its intent not to perform its contractual obligations under the subcontract."

That Monday meeting was the first the school board had heard of this dispute.

The timing of the construction is critical, as the district closed two other elementary schools due to low enrollment, leaving students with no option but to attend Thomas Jefferson or Aurora Heights.

In a statement shared with KCCI, Graphite Construction Group responded to the claims:

"The disputes that R3 is referring to is their inability and/or refusal to fulfill their contractual responsibilities. Over the course of the last few months, R3 has failed to provide information required in the contract including a completion timeline. Graphite is committed to working with R3 to get the project completed, however, we will only do so with the cooperative goal of getting the project completed on time."

The district says it does not know when it will receive the certificate of occupancy required for students to use the building. A final walkthrough is scheduled for Aug. 10.

R3 Roofing did not respond to requests for further comment.

AU Solutions, an agricultural chemical manufacturer that has planned to build a $17 million facility in the Newton Rail Park, had to postpone its groundbreaking ceremony this past week, which was to be held in conjunction with the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s site certification of the rail park.

Jim Bowman, senior director of site and economic development for Iowa Interstate Railroad, informed community members, stakeholders and media of AU Solutions’ absence at the start of the press conference held Thursday, July 9 at the rail park northeast of Newton city limits.

“AU Solutions is currently completing their site due diligence process to ensure that all of the project requirements are thoroughly addressed,” Bowman said. “And as a result the groundbreaking ceremony that we had hoped for today is postponed. But stay tuned. We’re working with them and that’s coming.”

The Newton facility will become the first Iowa location for AU Solutions, and it will build on the capabilities of its existing manufacturing facilities and headquarters in Tulsa, Okla. Supplementing some costs are $495,000 worth of tax credits awarded to AU Solutions by the Iowa Economic Development Authority Board.

AU Solutions was founded in 1995. The privately owned company manufactures agricultural adjuvants, pesticides and other chemical components. It prides itself on its track record of successful innovation and working together with customers to create dynamic chemistry solutions that lead to positive agricultural outcomes.

Matt McAdams, CEO and president of AU Solutions, said in a statement to Newton News that the company wanted a community that matched its culture.

It found the culture it was looking for in Newton.

“We began this journey to establish an additional manufacturing site that would strengthen our organization through greater redundancy,” McAdams said. “Our priority through this process was to find a location that fits our culture. In Newton, we found that community. We are extremely excited about the future.”
