The owners of a bourbon and wine bar coming to Main Street in Grimes want to create a place that a crowd of future regulars will find inviting, with plans for a little shopping and live music as well.
Amy Anderson, who owns Sips on Main with her husband, Darrell Dykstra, said the vibe of the bar will be "quiet, reserved, quaint, cozy" — a place to enjoy a conversation. They plan to open by October at 104 S.E. Main St.
"We just want everyone to feel like they're known here," Anderson said.
Anderson said she and her husband — business owners, including in automotive and floral — "just have always wanted to do this," especially after she "realized there wasn't a good place for a glass of wine" in Grimes.
She likes a dry white wine, and bourbon has been getting popular, she said, so that's the reason for the pairing. Anderson said there will be seasonal mixed drinks available as well.
There's no kitchen, so food options will be limited, but she said there's a patio in the backyard big enough to be fenced in and have live music. A boutique shop planned for upstairs will offer clothing and gifts — "fun finds," she said.
Anderson and her husband bought the 94-year-old, almost 1,500-square-foot home in December 2023 for $210,000, according to Polk County property records. She said they started remodeling it in March. With mostly black exterior paint and white on the deck, she said they're going for a look of "1930s with a modern flair."
Inside, where there will be room for about 35 to 40 people at a time. Anderson said most of the furniture and fixtures will be second hand.
"I'm trying to stay with the old school part of downtown Main Street," Anderson said.
