With a matching grant from Sid Meredith of Elkhorn, Neb., as well as a major portion of the ticket proceeds, the concert raised $4,824 to support the music programs at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont High School.
Selected as this year’s spotlight ensemble, the school’s Concert Band, under the direction of Dezirae Fairchild, played during intermission of the orchestra’s final Masterworks concert of the 2024-25 season.
The band’s performance of “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked,” “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and the jazz standard, “In the Mood” spurred Meredith into action. He is married to Ruth Seim’s daughter Sara, and both attended the Sunday matinee.
Sid Meredith told Steve Campell from the orchestra’s Ottumwa board that the band’s musical choices, the enthusiasm and the effort the kids put forth, as well as the support the school showed for their “team” prompted his donation.
“We broke a lot of records that day,” noted Fairchild, a member of the orchestra and its Ottumwa board. “This is the most money any band has ever received, and this year’s Concert for a Cause had the highest attendance documented to date, with almost 300 people. It was an honor to represent our school district.”

WEST DES MOINES — Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced today that the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship will invest in 14 urban water quality projects within communities across the state. Secretary Naig made the announcement alongside city and community leaders from West Des Moines at an event at Legacy Woods, the location of one of the new water quality projects. The announcement was made as part of the annual Iowa Soil and Water Conservation Week.
Utilizing funding from the state’s Water Quality Initiative (WQI) and other sources, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship will provide cost-share grants that cover up to 50 percent of the total cost of each project. The Department is investing nearly $2.7 million to support the 14 projects, which will leverage an overall investment of more than $5.7 million.
“No matter where you live in Iowa—city, town, or farm—everyone has a role to play in helping to protect our vital natural resources, like soil and water. Since 2015, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has invested significantly in 140 urban water quality projects across the state, collaborating with local partners to advance and accelerate the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy goals,” said Secretary Naig. “Our new partnership project at Legacy Woods in West Des Moines showcases innovative practices that improve water quality and protect our rich natural resources. These practices also enhance recreation, preserve our cultural heritage, and provide the public with educational opportunities. Thank you to the West Des Moines Community Foundation, City of West Des Moines, and West Des Moines Historical Society for partnering with us on this project, as well as the many public and private partners who are helping with other urban projects across the state.”
The Department provides financial and technical assistance to the communities and organizations implementing these urban water quality practices. To receive state funding, the urban water quality projects must include education and outreach components and involve local partners. These community-based projects raise awareness about new stormwater management methods and encourage others to adopt similar practices to improve water quality.
“I want to thank West Des Moines Parks and Recreation as well as Secretary Mike Naig, the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation, and the countless West Des Moines residents and businesses who through this project are helping to preserve our environment, preserve our history and leave a legacy for generations to come,” said Russ Trimble, Mayor of West Des Moines.
These urban conservation projects include water quality practices like bioretention cells, bioswales, native plantings, permeable pavers, rain gardens, tree trenches, native landscaping, sediment forebays, oxbows, and wetlands among many other proven practices.

Two oxbows, two rain gardens, trees, and native landscaping will be installed by the Mahaska County Conservation Board at Caldwell Park. These practices will intercept runoff from the newly created Environmental Learning Center, which will reduce flood risks and pollutants heading into Spring Creek and the South Skunk River. WEST DES MOINES — Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced Monday the state agriculture department invested in 14 urban water quality projects, including one that backs up to the historic Jordan House where he spoke.
The project in West Des Moines will add bioretention cells, or rain gardens, native plants and a stormwater wetland to the Legacy Woods Nature Sanctuary, as part of its plan to expand to include trails and recreation for the public. This will help to capture and clean stormwater runoff before it reaches Jordan Creek and Raccoon River.
“Our investment, on the part of the department, is focused on water quality, but we know that projects like this also provide other values for the community, and we love those layered benefits of education and recreation and cultural preservation,” Naig said.
He said the cost-share grants announced are another way to adhere to the state’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy and said visible urban projects like the one at Legacy Woods can be inspiring to visitors.
“I hope it’ll inspire folks who spend time here to consider what they might do on their own property, but also other cities can come and see how this can be incorporated into the landscape,” Naig said.
Russ Trimble, mayor of West Des Moines, said he was proud of his city’s continued efforts to improve and preserve its natural resources.
“Water quality improvements aren’t just the responsibility of rural Iowa farmers,” Trimble said. “It’s incumbent upon all of us to do our part to clean up and improve our water.”
The grants cover up to 50% of each of the 14 projects and are funded, in part, through the state Water Quality Initiative. IDALS invested $250,000 into the wetland project in West Des Moines and overall invested nearly $2.7 million for all of the projects.
Including the local matches, the urban water quality projects will leverage more than $5.7 million for projects located in: Algona, Ankeny, Bondurant, Cedar Rapids, Clear Lake, Clinton, Decorah, Des Moines, Dunlap, Durant, Evansdale, Mount Ayr, Oskaloosa and West Des Moines.
Projects range from adding permeable parking lots and pavers to infrastructure, landscaping with oxbows and rain gardens or using native species and wetlands to filter runoff water.
Naig made the announcement during Iowa Soil and Water Conservation week, and said all Iowans have a role to play in soil and water conservation, regardless of where they live or what type of property they own.
“There’s certainly more work to do, but we’re seeing progress towards achieving our Nutrient Reduction Strategy goals,” Naig said. “Projects like this make a difference.”
