Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Rumson, NJ, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your NJ's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Rumson, NJ understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Rumson, NJ

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring

 Caregivers Rumson, NJ

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • A Place For Mom - Senior Living Advisor Janet Wheeler

A Jersey Shore restaurant ranked among the best in the state for waterfront dining has announced plans to close after 27 years.

The Salt Creek Grille on the Navesink River in Rumson will close after its final day on Dec. 31, the owners announced Friday in a social media post.

“We have come to the end of our lease, and while this chapter is coming to an end, the memories we’ve created together will last a lifetime,” the owners said.

“To our loyal patrons who’ve celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, first dates, and quiet Tuesday nights with us — thank you. Your laughter, stories, and support have filled this space with warmth and heart.”

The announcement comes a month after the Salt Creek Grille location in Princeton Forrestal Village announced it was closing on Oct. 4.

“This decision has not come easily,” the owners said in the Princeton closure announcement. “Since COVID, we’ve faced ongoing challenges, and despite the dedication of our incredible team and the support of so many loyal guests, it is no longer sustainable to remain open.”

The Salt Creek Grille in Rumson with its sprawling lawn has made the list of NJ.com’s best waterfront restaurants in multiple years.

The Rumson restaurant’s owners acknowledged its longtime staff members in the farewell message.

“To our amazing staff, many of whom have been with us for over two decades, you are the soul of Salt Creek,” the owners said. “Your passion and dedication made this place truly special.”

The restaurant owners encouraged guests to visit during its remaining weeks of operation.

“Come say goodbye, raise a toast, and help us make these final days unforgettable,” the owners said.

RUMSON, NJ — A Monmouth County singer is set to perform the National Anthem at Super Bowl LX in February, the NFL recently announced.

Rumson native Charlie Puth will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the game begins on Sunday, Feb. 8, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the league said.

He will be joined by 11-time Grammy-winning artist Brandi Carlile and Grammy-winning R&B breakout artist Coco Jones at the event, who will each be performing “America the Beautiful” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

The Super Bowl Halftime show will be headlined by Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican singer known for songs like “DtMF” and “NUEVAYoL.”

"Super Bowl Sunday is the world's biggest entertainment stage, and we're proud to spotlight artists who embody the very best of music and culture," said Jon Barker, senior vice president of global event production for the NFL.

"Beyond the game itself, the Super Bowl is a global celebration,” Barker continued. “These artists bring a distinct voice to the moment, helping set the tone for a day that will captivate fans around the world."

According to a report from NJ Advance Media, this will be the first time in 35 years that a New Jersey singer has sung the national anthem on Super Bowl Sunday, with the last performer being Newark native Whitney Houston in 1991.

In an online post, Puth celebrated the news of his performance, adding that he “can’t believe” it’s something he gets to announce.

A graduate of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School and four-time Grammy nominee, Puth is known for hit songs such as “See You Again,” “Attention,” and “We Don’t Talk Anymore.”

His performance at Super Bowl LX will come before the release of his fourth studio album, “Whatever’s Clever!” which is set to be released in early March.

Back home in Monmouth County, Puth has also made a mark on the music and arts community and has given back through things like the Charlie Puth Musical Performance Scholarship with the Count Basie Center for the Arts.

Established in 2022, the scholarship fund was established alongside Puth’s agreement to serve as honorary chair of the Basie Center’s Forever For Everyone endowment campaign and is awarded on an annual basis.

The scholarship provides up to two promising music students with a $1,500 scholarship to the Count Basie Center for the Arts’ Turner Academy of the Arts, Conservatory of Music, the Jazz Arts Project, or any other future program that creates a formal partnership with the Basie Center focused on music performance.

Applications for this year’s scholarship will be accepted between May 15 and July 15, with applicants notified in late summer and scholarships valid for fall, winter, or spring sessions.

I was saddened to hear that an extremely popular restaurant in Rumson was closing its doors after a long 27 years sitting along the pristine banks of the Navesink River.

The Salt Creek Grille is a place that has a spectacular happy hour featuring half-priced wines, reduced-price drinks, and dinner specials depending on what day of the week you are lucky enough to enjoy.

For 27 years, the Salt Creek Grille cranked out good mesquite-fired dishes, good service, and had great bartenders. I enjoyed the restaurant. I was friends with their former managing partner, Steve Bidgood, who had tremendous energy and a great personality.

I hosted many of his wine-and-cheese charity functions and auctions in the party room that openedt to the beautiful views of the Navesink River.

It was a place to relax and hang out with family and friends.

Why is Salt Creek closing?

The official notice from the managing partners at Salt Creek Grille says that their lease has ended. The last day of operations will be Dec. 31, 2025.

Salt Creek Grille Rumson is the third of four Salt Creek Grilles to close. Princeton closed its doors in October of 2025, citing COVID as a strong reason for the closing. Princeton Salt Creek was surrounded by office buildings and with a sizable percentage of the nation’s workforce now working from home, gone were the client luncheons, executive happy hours and grabbing dinner after work. I understand how that could be the demise of the Princeton location.

The Salt Creek Grille in Rumson did well during the week, and maybe the same holds true for the “work at home” realization that once people are home, it is tough for them to make the effort to go out and eat dinner and relax. Weekends were busy but you need the week to sustain a successful restaurant that occupies a large space on the river in one of New Jersey’s most prestigious ZIP codes. Rent, utilities, and insurance are at a premium. It is very tough to pay that premium if you are not getting the necessary foot traffic into your restaurant.

The Salt Creek Grille opened its first location in 1996 in Valencia, California. The partners then opened Dana Point, California, followed by Rumson then Princeton. All but the Valencia location remains under the Salt Creek Grille umbrella.

What is next for that location?

Nancy Mulheren, a longtime resident of Rumson, owns the property where the Salt Creek Grille resides. She also owns the surrounding post office and Crazees ice cream store.

She is a philanthropist who has helped so many through her generosity. What I enjoy about Nancy is that she is a preservationist in trying to keep Rumson a community that serves the people while keeping the beauty of Rumson aesthetically consistent.

No word on what will go into the space of the Salt Creek Grille, but it will be a pleasing, enjoyable restaurant for all of us to enjoy. You cannot beat that view.

Thank you to the staff at Salt Creek Grille; I had many enjoyable times there with both family and friends. I wish you well.

On a 99-yard, second-half drive, which ultimately put the game out of reach, Wall ran 22 plays.

Rumson-Fair Haven snapped the ball all of 16 times in the first half — four of those were punts.

Wall pushed Rumson-Fair Haven forward when on offense and backward on defense Friday night. The Knights ended RFH’s reign as Group 2 champions with a 17-14 victory in Wall in the NJSIAA/Xfinity Central Jersey Group 2 semifinals.

The victory by Wall (8-2) was its eighth-straight and advanced the second-seeded Knights to the CJ2 final next Friday at top-seeded Camden (8-2). Camden overpowered Manasquan in the other semifinal, 46-6.

Wall opened up a 17-0 lead when the 22-play drive ended with a 32-yard field goal by Heath Reinhardt with 9:08 left to play. Rumson-Fair Haven put together a pair of scoring drives but ultimately ran out of timeouts and time.

“Once we went up by 17 I knew time was on our side,” said Wall head coach Ed Gurrieri.

With the loss, Rumson-Fair Haven (6-4) failed to reach a sectional final for the first time since 2012.

“We kept it simple,” said. “We kept going forward. We were physical, hard-nosed and ran down hill.”

There is a formula to beating Rumson-Fair Haven — at least over the last decade.

An opponent needs to run the football, stop the run, be better up front and stay ahead of the chains. Wall did them all.

The Knights had only five negative plays all night. They outgained Rumson-Fair Haven 73-19 on first down, converted five times on third down and three on fourth. Wall finished with a 168-36 rushing yards advantage.

On defense, Wall did not allow a first down in the first half. It held RFH to minus 13 rushing yards through the first two quarters and six total yards in first half.

“Wall did exactly what it did all year,” said RFH head coach Jeremy Schulte referencing Wall powerhouse run game and line dominance on both sides of the ball. “We executed in the second have but not earlier in the game. We had a lot of negative plays in the first half.”

Wall was especially dominant when it came to time of possession (the third-quarter drive went 12:44. Its first scoring drive went 10 plays and took 5:59 off the clock. Its second was a 9-play drive that consumed 4:51.

Wall’s running back put up big numbers after contact. Dylan Cohen had 80 yards and Mike Boulard had 45.

“Dylan and Mike never go down on the first hit,” said Wall’s senior QB Brian McKenna, who threw a TD pass.

Wall scored on its second possession driving 66 yards. Cohen carried seven for 36 yards on the march. The Knights found success attack the Rumson edges. Cohen capped things off with a four-run over right tackle with 2:39 left in the first period.

Wall’s second scoring drive in the second quarter covered 51 yards. The six-run, three-pass march ended on a 23-yard strike from McKenna to Maddox Mizelle. On the play, McKenna rolled right and connected with Mizelle at the pylon on a third-and-nine.

“Maddox (Mizelle) ran a post-corner,” McKenna said. “He ran a great route.”

The second half opened with Wall forcing Rumson to punt on a fifth-straight drive. Then came the 99-yard drive after Rumson punter Drew Cavise pinned Wall at its own one yard line with a 62-yard kick.

The methodical, penalty-free drive, featured two third-down conversions and one on fourth down. Except for a 21-yard pass from McKenna to Justin Davis, Wall nickel-and-dimed its way down the field.

Playing with a sense of urgency, RFH scored twice in the final 9:08. Using short drops designed to get the ball out of QB Brady Williams’ hands quickly, Rumson scored with 5:36 left on a five-yard pass from Williams to Cole Spoonire. With 2:13 remaining Williams threw another touchdown to Jack Gyimesi also from five yards out. It pulled RFH to within 17-13.

After the second TD, Schulte decided to go for one point and not two. A two point conversion would have cut the Wall lead to 17-15. Wall, however, blocked the kick.

Wall handled two RFH onsides kicks to secure the victory.

RUMSON, NJ — Concrete from the old Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge is prepared to ship to a designated spot off Sandy Hook, where it will be used to construct a fishing reef, the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners announced Thursday.

While work will continue until Spring 2026 to fully remove the old Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge, Commissioner Director Thomas Arnone said the concrete being used to build a fishing reef off Sandy Hook (as approved by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection) is ready to go.

The process will involve using barges to transport materials around Sandy Hook to the designated reef site, officials said.

“Fishing reefs like the one to be constructed offer numerous ecological benefits such as creating habitat for marine life, providing protection for juvenile fish and offering recreational opportunities for anglers and reef divers,” Arnone said.

“My fellow Commissioners and I are proud to see the Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge project contribute to both our infrastructure and our environment by transforming the old bridge into a resource that supports our coastal ecosystem," Arnone continued.

Demolition work for the bridge is being done by Richard E. Pierson Construction Co., Inc. of Pilesgrove, NJ, officials said.

News of the concrete being ready to ship follows a previous announcement from the county about their plans to use parts of the old bridge to construct a fishing reef off Sandy Hook.

Construction on the old bridge came after Monmouth County received $31 million in federal funding for its replacement in 2020.

According to the NJ Department of Transportation, the existing bridge structure was “at the end of its service life” and required a complete replacement.

The county then proposed a movable bridge to replace the structure, and over the summer, the new Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge was able to open to the public.
