ISLAND HEIGHTS, NJ — A historic New Jersey tall ship will be sailing up the Toms River on Wednesday to kick off a week that will celebrate the state's sailing and maritime history, officials announced.
The A.J. Meerwald, a 1928 oyster schooner, will make a port visit to the Island Heights Yacht Club starting with a parade of sail at noon, with arrival at the yacht club at 1 p.m., officials said.
Local boaters are invited to meet the boat around noon and help guide her up the river, officials said.
There will be a dockside reception at 5 p.m. and tours of the boat at the Island Heights Yacht Club that will be open to the public, and the port visit will continue
The port visit is packed with education events for youth and adults celebrating NJ’s long history of sailing and oystering.
The A.J. Meerwald was built in Dorchester, New Jersey, and launched in 1928 as an oyster dredging schooner, adapted to efficiently fulfill the prevailing conditions and specific demands of her native waters. It was one of nearly 500 schooners built along the Delaware Bay before the decline of the local shipbuilding industry in the 1930s. Today, there are only a handful of converted schooners still harvesting oysters, according to Jessica Yorke, executive director of Bayshore Center at Bivalve, which owns and operates New Jersey's Tall Ship and the Delaware Bay Museum located in Port Norris, along the Delaware Bay.
Now the AJ Meerwald is operated by the Bayshore Center at Bivalve as a traveling classroom and vehicle to enjoy the area’s waterways. Passengers can enjoy the excitement and wonder of sailing aboard a 115-foot schooner.
"If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even join the crew in hauling lines and setting sails! Enjoy the great outdoors as you breathe in the fresh air and marvel at the scenery that surrounds you," the center said.
"Generations of New Jerseyans have built boats, raced boats and worked the waters for fish and shellfish," Yorke said. "A strong and healthy waterway is vital to many people and industries in the community. We are excited to celebrate our local maritime history with passionate watermen and women connected to Barnegat Bay."
After the visit along the Toms River, the A.J. Meerwald will head to Atlantic Highlands for a week of public sails departing from Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club from July 16-20. Then she will sail from Liberty State Park in Jersey City from July 23-27 before heading south to Cape May with public sails departing from the Cape May Ferry Terminal.
The Toms River port visit is sponsored by the members of the Bayshore Center at Bivalve, and assisted by members of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association, Save Barnegat Bay, and the Barnegat Bay Maritime Museum, who are partnering with the Bayshore Center for programs for more than 500 kids during the port visits.

TOMS RIVER — Property taxes for the second-largest municipality in Ocean County will skyrocket by nearly 13% as a fierce battle over school budgets and state funding continues.
Despite its defiance, Toms River schools must adopt a budget that includes the 12.9% tax hike. It comes on top of a 9.3% increase the year before.
Ashley Lamb, the school board president, said the double-digit increase was "unconscionable."
However, the New Jersey Department of Education has no problem forcing the school district to implement the tax increases.
State officials said they stepped in and adopted the budget just before the Fourth of July weekend.
They said the board's refusal to again massively increase taxes due to cuts in state aid put students at risk and indicated "deeper and systemic concerns."
On Thursday, the DOE released a scathing statement that said adopting a budget was one of school administrators' most basic responsibilities.
"While the Department acknowledges the difficulty inherent in school district budgeting decisions, the State and the public hold their school district leaders to the highest standards and expect them to rise to this challenge," the DOE said in a statement.
It's the second year in a row that the state has forced Toms River schools to adopt a budget with local tax hikes.
However, state officials didn't offer any suggestions for how Toms River should make up the $175 million in state aid that the Murphy administration has cut in recent years due to changes in the school funding formula.
The funding formula was approved in 2008; however, it was only implemented within the past seven years.
On Monday, Toms River Regional schools officials released a joint response to the DOE.
They said there have been no answers from the Democratic Murphy administration about how the funding formula works or why it's taking millions away from the largest school district in Ocean County, which is a Republican stronghold in New Jersey.
The Toms River school district has been forced to cut 250 staff positions, sell $20 million in assets and property, and make other budget reductions, according to school officials.
School officials said the DOE's criticisms were ironic, as the Murphy administration's funding cuts had caused the district's budget issues.
"It’s safe to say, after seven long years of a clearly unjust and secret funding formula, we’re sensing a troubling pattern that indicates deeper and systemic concerns about the ability of the state to meet its most basic responsibilities," school officials said.
Last week, Toms River schools officials said they intended to file for bankruptcy amid a $22.3-million budget deficit.
It was a shocking announcement from the district that touts itself as "the most efficient, effective, and transparent large public school district in New Jersey."
Property taxes are shared among county, school and municipal governments. Property taxes in these 22 municipalities had the highest share going to their school districts. The towns are listed from least to greatest in terms of school tax share. The 2024 data was released in 2025 by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
These 30 schools had the highest rate of chronic absenteeism in the 2022-23 school year. Data is for the New Jersey Department of Education's annual NJ School Performance Reports.

Facing what it describes as a state-created financial crisis, the Toms River Regional School District says it plans to file for bankruptcy.
The announcement came Monday night after the school board rejected a warning from the state Department of Education that the district must approve a 2025-26 budget or cease all operations.
Toms River Regional has lost a total of $175 million in state aid in recent years due to New Jersey’s revised school funding formula, according to district officials.
To stay afloat, the district has had to lay off 250 staff members, sell buildings, increase class sizes and hike taxes.
State officials told the district it would need to raise taxes again, this time by nearly 13% to balance next year’s budget — a move school leaders said they were unwilling to make.
“We cannot and will not acquiesce to the State Department of Education’s direction without severely undercutting an educational system that our taxpayers deserve,” Toms River Regional Board of Education President Ashley Lamb said in a statement.
“Our district has already endured devastating cuts — we’ve lost over 250 teacher and staff positions and seen class sizes increase to critical levels. Enough is enough," Lamb said.
The state Department of Education did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
The bankruptcy plan comes as the district continues to feud with state officials over school funding. Last year, Toms River Regional officials said they would sue the state, the Department of Education and the acting education commissioner for causing “a revenue crisis” that school officials describe as child abuse.
Toms River Regional is one of the largest school districts in New Jersey, serving about 14,500 students across 18 schools.
The district’s financial crisis has been building since 2018, when New Jersey overhauled its school funding formula — shifting aid away from “overfunded” districts to those historically underfunded. The change left districts like Toms River facing deep cuts.
On Monday night, the district’s financial crisis reached a breaking point. For the second time, the Toms River Board of Education unanimously voted to not pass a budget for the upcoming school year.
The decision came in direct defiance of a warning from the state Department of Education, which sent a letter to Toms River Regional Superintendent Michael Citta ahead of the meeting.
In the letter, obtained by the Asbury Park Press, the department said if the board failed to pass a budget, the district would be barred from spending any money or running educational programs starting July 1.
Despite the state’s warning, school officials said summer programs will begin this week and schools will continue to operate as planned.
And instead of raising taxes, the board voted to start the process of filing for Chapter 9 bankruptcy — a legal step that would give the district protection from creditors while it works on a debt adjustment plan, officials said.
“We will continue to attempt to engage the DOE in finding a solution that best serves our community,” Lamb said. “But make no mistake — we will not abandon our students or compromise their education while the state refuses to address the crisis they created."
Although the district received a $1.69 million increase in state aid this year, officials say it has still lost about 60% of its total state funding since 2018, when the revised formula began phasing in.
In April, the district proposed selling a district-owned building on Hooper Avenue, formerly used as an early learning center, for $15 million to help close budget gaps.
New Jersey’s school funding formula, fully implemented for the first time this year, was created to achieve what the state calls “full fairness.” But across the state, some districts have resorted to drastic measures to fill budget gaps caused by steep aid cuts — including raising property taxes, laying off staff and closing schools.
