Mendham Borough, NJ – Mendham Borough School District Mountain View Middle School’s program, Superpowers – Strengthening the Home School Connection, was recognized as part of the New Jersey School Boards Association’s Annual School Leader Awards, which showcases creative and effective programs from New Jersey school districts.
School Counselor Bridget Maloney designed the year-long program to naturally open the lines of communication between parents and the school. The school, parents, and students explored ways to support middle school students by celebrating “superpowers” and developing the students’ social-emotional toolkits together.
“Navigating the middle school years is tough for parents and students,” said School Counselor Bridget Maloney. “Superpowers emphasized the inherent strengths of our students to develop resilience and strengthened the connection between home and school.”
The school community explored themes simultaneously from Phyllis Fagell’s book, Middle School Superpowers: Raising Resilient Tweens in Turbulent Times, to help promote meaningful conversations at home. The book explores the use of various superpowers to navigate disappointment, self-regulate emotions, take healthy risks, and recover from setbacks.
Parents got involved by participating in a monthly book club. The MVMS Student Advisory complemented discussions with lessons highlighting how to activate their superpowers.
“These superpower lessons helped equip our school community with crucial skills to understand, manage, and express emotions,” said Principal of Mountain View Middle School Aimee Toth. “We were all invested - from the parents to the staff and students.”
Entries for the School Leader Awards were judged on the level of innovation, how well the program addressed specific needs of students, and the relationship of the program to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards and results.
This year, the judges of the 2025 School Leader Award program selected one school district for exemplary program recognition and four recognized programs out of nine entries. Mendham Borough’s Mountain View Middle School is one of the recognized programs.
“Programs like these go beyond the classroom walls and engage the entire school community,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mitzi Morillo. “Students and parents learned how to foster healthy relationships and build resilience to cope with stress and adversity – skills they’ll carry beyond their academic journey in the Mendham Borough School District.”

This year's fall foliage is expected to peak in North Jersey around Oct. 6, and throughout the rest of the state by Oct. 20. But we'll likely see colors start to appear before September ends.
You can find a pretty great view of this year's show from anywhere in our region, but there are certain stretches of road that will give you the most memorable experience for a scenic fall drive. Here are seven of North Jersey's best byways for picturesque views of this year's fall colors.
Running between Interstate 287 in Oakland and Route 511 in Ringwood, Skyline Drive is a nearly 6-mile stretch of hilly road surrounded by trees drenched in vibrant seasonal colors. You'll also get a good view of nearby mountain ridges, offering more colorful, cascading leaves.
Where you can stop: Skyline Drive passes through the 4,200-acre Ramapo Mountain State Forest, where you can hike historic trails and rock scrambles for views of the New York City skyline, the surrounding hillsides and the 120-acre Ramapo Lake. You can also explore Ringwood State Park, home to nearly 40 miles of hiking trails, or go to the nearby New Jersey Botanical Garden for more fall colors and seasonal plants.
As its name suggests, Ramapo Valley Road — the local name for Route 202 in Mahwah and Oakland — is a long and windy route that travels through the Ramapo Mountains and along the Ramapo River. The 7-mile ride is lined with brightly colored fall trees, horse farms and historic landmarks.
Where you can stop: Take a pit stop at the 4,000-acre Ramapo Valley County Reservation, which is home to a variety of hiking trails with views of waterfalls, fall leaves and the New York skyline. While you're there, check out the remnants of Van Slyke Castle, a circa-1910 mansion now in the middle of the hiking area.
The Western Highlands Scenic Byway is a 24.1-mile stretch of road that travels north along Route 94 through Hardyston and Vernon Townships, connecting Route 23 and the New York border. It features sprawling views of brightly colored forests that include sections of the Appalachian Trail, as well as historic farms and Revolutionary War-era structures.
Where you can stop: Hop on the Appalachian Trail or take a walk through the Newark Pequannock Watershed, Hamburg Mountain Wildlife Management Area and Wawayanda State Park — all spots the Western Highlands Scenic Byway passes through.
Leading up to High Point Monument, which marks the tallest spot in New Jersey at 1,803 feet above sea level, Monument Road is filled with eye-catching fall scenery.
Where you can stop: At the top of Monument Road, walk around the monument to see sweeping views of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania all at once, as well as an aerial view of the colored leaves. You can also hike one of several trails available here.
Officially designated a scenic byway, Palisades Interstate Parkway spans 42 tree-lined miles from the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee to the Bear Mountain Bridge in New York. About 11 of those miles travel through North Jersey, offering a direct view of the Garden State's fiery autumn leaves.
Where you can stop: The Parkway runs along the Palisades Cliffs, which overlook the Hudson River and the New York skyline. Stop at State Line Lookout in Alpine to take it all in, or explore one of the many nearby hiking trails.
Route 206 spans a total of 130 miles in New Jersey, but the portion of the roadway that passes through Stokes State Forest in Sandyston may be among the most beautiful. The winding highway is surrounded by picturesque scenery in autumn, including forests, farmland and charming local businesses.
Where you can stop: Explore a portion of Stokes State Forest, which covers about 16,447 acres. You can take in even more breathtaking views at the Sunrise Mountain scenic overlook or the Tillman Ravine Natural Area.
Route 510 crosses nearly 23 miles from Chester to Newark, including this section through the scenic South Mountain Reservation. Travelers will find breathtaking views of bright fall foliage. Afterwards, you can also drive along Cherry Lane and Brookside Drive for more forested views.
Where you can stop: Take a walk along South Mountain Reservation's Orange Reservoir, hike to Hemlock Falls or visit the animals at Turtle Back Zoo.
