Home Care In Glen Raven, NC

Home Care Glen Raven, NC

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Alamance County Historical Museum gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. Home care in Glen Raven, NC is a safe, effective way to give your loved ones the care they need when they need it the most.

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Glen Raven, NC?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local da Vinci's Table or visit Alamance Battleground State Historic Site, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

If you have been on the fence about non-medical home care, there has never been a better time than now to give your senior the care, assistance, and companionship they deserve.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Glen Raven, NC, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your NC's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Glen Raven, NC

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Glen Raven, NC understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Glen Raven, NC

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Glen Raven, NC

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Cham-Net Family Care Home
  • A Vision Comes True
  • Caring Hearts Assisted Living
  • Home Place of Burlington

Allen E. Gant Jr., chief executive officer of Burlington, N.C.-based Glen Raven, Inc., a global provider of innovative fabric-based solutions, was honored at a March 30 campus luncheon with the Frank S. Holt, Jr. Business Leadership Award, Elon University’s highest honor for business leadership.

More than 100 community, university and business leaders, plus relatives and friends, attended the midday celebration, where Gant gave credit for his professional success to the sacrifices made by his family and to the energy of Glen Raven employees.

“All of these people deserve the credit, not me,” Gant said, “but I’m humbled, and I’m thankful.”

After attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Gant joined the family business founded by his grandfather, John Q. Gant. He served the company in numerous capacities before being named CEO and president in 1999. Under Gant’s leadership, Glen Raven has expanded worldwide, selling its products in more than 125 nations.

His reputation as a leader in the global textile industry earned him a post in the Bush administration’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. He also served as chair of the National Council of Textile Organizations and the Institute of Textile Technology, and he sat on the board of directors for the North Carolina Textile Foundation, Inc.

Gant’s leadership extends beyond the textile industry to local community and charitable organizations. In 2007, he founded the New Leaf Society, an organization that seeks to make the Alamance County community an attractive place to live, work and invest through landscaping. He has served on boards of advisors for the Alamance County United Way, Alamance Regional Medical Center, the Educational Foundation of UNC-Chapel Hill and the Duke Heart Center, as well as the board of visitors for the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at UNC.

In 1997, Gant joined the board of trustees of Elon University and in 2007 was elected chair. His visionary leadership has been instrumental in the development of the most recent strategic plan for the university, The Elon Commitment. Gant lives in Burlington with his wife, Denise, and the couple has two children, Grayson and Allen III.

In his own remarks to the audience, Elon University President Leo M. Lambert lauded Gant’s contributions to the community, the university and to the textile industry, using several adjectives – inspiring, innovative, imaginative and international – while noting that it is “impossible to paint a picture of Allen Gant with small words.”

“He’s bold. He’s a man of big ideas. He is a man impatient with small ideas. He’s generous,” Lambert said. “We are deeply indebted to you, and all of us in this room are proud to call you our friend.”

Elon’s Martha and Spencer Love School of Business established the award to recognize a local citizen whose contributions to business and the community reflect the same progressive, visionary leadership exemplified by the award’s namesake. The late Frank S. Holt, Jr. was president of Holt Manufacturing Co., and an active civic leader.

A committee of university, civic and business leaders annually selects the recipient of the Frank S. Holt, Jr. Business Leadership Award.

By Stephen M. Warner, Contributing Editor

Glen Raven, N.C.-based Glen Raven Inc.’s story is a success story for the U.S. technical textiles industry. The company is privately held by the Gant family, and throughout its 137-year history, it has been led by a member of the Gant family. Leib Oehmig began his career with Glen Raven in 1989 and steadily moved into increased management responsible positions. In October, Oehmig became the first non-family member named CEO of Glen Raven. Textile World recently had the opportunity to interview Oehmig.

Textile World: It’s been four years since the management transition from Allen Gant, Jr. to you was first announced. During this time, you have served as president/COO of Glen Raven Inc. Why such a long transition period?

Oehmig: We began the transition during the post-recession period in which we were focused on both stabilizing our business globally, and executing numerous growth opportunities. Therefore, it was “all hands on deck” and we wanted to ensure that our team remained focused. Additionally, this has been a big transition for Glen Raven’s family shareholders. Although I have spent my career with Glen Raven, Allen had the foresight to understand the ownership dynamics of this very privately held company and wanted to pace the transition in a manner that would ensure the success of our leadership team. In the end, Thursday, October 5, 2017, was the date selected for the change.

TW: Since largely leaving the pantyhose business in the 1970s and tying the company’s fate to woven acrylic Sunbrella® fabrics, Glen Raven’s “bread and butter” has been the traditional markets like awning and marine boat cover applications. In the last decade or so, we’ve seen Sunbrella expand into other areas such as outdoor furniture. What currently is the largest end market segment for Sunbrella, and what do you see as its next big market?

Oehmig: Glen Raven’s core markets are shade, marine, automotive, furniture, safety, value-added military and geosynthetics. We also own a software company and have additional investments in a range of other industries. Therefore, I would certainly not agree that we are tied to a woven product or specific raw material. We do remain 100-percent committed to our core markets and are equally executing strategies to grow these markets, along with our position in these markets globally. Our focus is to introduce products, services and technologies with unique attributes that will allow our current and prospective customers be successful. If we can help our customers achieve their goals, then everyone in the value chain wins.

TW: Staying on the subject of Sunbrella for a moment, there seems to be a greater push recently to emphasize the Sunbrella brand as the company rather than Glen Raven Custom Fabrics. At the recent IFAI Expo in New Orleans, Glen Raven Custom Fabrics wasn’t even listed as the exhibitor; rather, it was Sunbrella. What’s behind that strategy?

Oehmig: Although Glen Raven is the parent company, we focus on putting forth the presence that is most relevant to our customer, and that is often a product or service we provide under a different brand than Glen Raven.

At IFAI Expo, for example, our Trivantage business unit has a visible presence as the leading distributor of fabrics and hardware

to the market. The show attendees — whether they purchase through Trivantage or another distributor — are also using Sunbrella, which is the leading shade fabric brand, which is why Sunbrella has a strong presence. It’s all about focusing on customer needs.

TW: In August, Glen Raven announced its intent to acquire Sunbury Textile Mills, a manufacturer of decorative jacquard fabrics. Glen Raven has been a close partner with Sunbury for more than 20 years. Why was the decision made to acquire them? Was there something you saw changing in the industry?

Oehmig: Sunbury has been a strategic partner of Glen Raven’s for more than 20 years. We are operationally and culturally aligned, and our teams have always worked well together. However, the pace of business today is faster than at any other time in our history. Therefore, our commitment to our customers meant that we needed to further align ourselves to take advantage of opportunities and to be able to execute faster and more efficiently than ever before. Bringing Sunbury and Glen Raven together gives us a great opportunity to better service our customers.

TW: What are your thoughts on the U.S. economy right now?

Oehmig: We are in the ninth year of economic expansion since the Great Recession. However, for many of us, this period of economic expansion has felt different from previous expansions. The run up in the S&P likely has more to do with a lack of meaningful alternatives than true market dynamics and consumers remain more cautious. At Glen Raven, we remain focused on maintaining a solid balance sheet while continuing to make significant investments in the business. We routinely review our market portfolio for any signs of weakness, but we remain optimistic.

TW: How about current specific end markets for technical textiles such as shade, marine, military, casual furniture, geosynthetics and automotive?

Oehmig: When we speak about the opportunities and market conditions in technical textiles, we are market, submarket and geographically specific. For several years, the global shade and marine markets have not been growing at a desired rate. Therefore, we are pushing innovation through programs such as “The Future of Shade” and the “Marine Design Challenge” to inspire creativity, new products and new applications in these markets. For the balance of the other markets you mentioned, we are seeing a wide range of market growth rates depending on industry and geographical location. Therefore, we continue to push innovation while also expanding our global footprint in support of our growing customer base.

TW: Do you see a “market disruptor” out there or will growth be more evolutionary?

Oehmig: I am sure that every business is imagining how they can be a disruptor versus being disrupted. This is the reason that we spend a great deal of time strategizing around not only “what’s now”, but more importantly “what’s next.” In some industries we serve, the technology is changing so fast that the next disruptive technology or application may be just around the corner. In other markets, change seems to be more evolutionary. However, in every market, the pace of change and the customer’s expectations for innovation is increasing faster than ever before.

TW: How do you feel about the Trump Administration’s announced intention to revisit the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Korea U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS)? Do they need to be revisited?

Oehmig: I support the Administration’s intention to revisit the NAFTA agreement if the desired outcome is a modernization of the 24-year old agreement. However, I would not support a comprehensive renegotiation. The same would be true for KORUS. Improved customs enforcement of the current agreements is an issue that must be addressed.

TW: Gant guided the company through a period of unprecedented expansion in Europe, Asia, India and Brazil. Glen Raven also merged the two primary technical textile distributors in North America into a new subsidiary called Trivantage. The company has also moved into previously unfamiliar markets like geosynthetics. When the time comes, what do you hope will be your legacy at Glen Raven?

Oehmig: I am passionate about this industry, the markets and customers we serve and the incredible group of people that I have had the pleasure of working beside for the last 28 years. Amazing opportunities remain in this industry, and I will hope to have made a contribution in Glen Raven reaching its full potential by remaining customer focused and conducting business in an ethical and socially responsible manner. There will be challenges, but we will remain focused on our customers and how we can help them achieve their goals.

Roger Gant Jr., who served on Elon's board of trustees for 20 years, died July 26 at the age of 86. Gant was former president of Glen Raven Inc. and a second-generation descendant of the textile company's founder.

“It was my good fortune to have Roger as a wise and patient mentor,” said Elon trustee Allen E. Gant Jr., Roger Gant’s cousin and Glen Raven’s current president and CEO. “As is true for many Glen Raven associates, Roger not only taught me the principles of good business, but also the value of family, community and people. He was a good and faithful steward of our company and set us on a solid course that is sustaining even today.

“Our family and all Glen Raven associates are greatly saddened by Roger’s death. He was an inspiring leader, a dedicated husband and father, and one of the brightest and most compassionate individuals you could ever care to meet. The world is a better place because Roger was here, and we will miss him greatly.”

Roger Gant, Jr. was born on May 9, 1924, in Alamance County, grandson of John Q. Gant, the founder of Glen Raven, where Roger Gant devoted his professional career.

Gant attended public schools in Alamance County and served with the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving decorations for meritorious service. After the War, he returned to North Carolina where he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He met his wife, Rose Anne, while attending college and they returned to Alamance County where they raised three children, Anne, Alice, and Roger III.

Following graduation from UNC, Gant joined Glen Raven on Oct. 1, 1948, and held a variety of positions culminating in president in 1972, a position he held until his retirement from management in 1989. Gant also served as a Glen Raven director, beginning with his first appointment on May 1, 1946. He continued to serve as a director for 55 years until his retirement from the board on June 7, 2001 and became director emeritus.

Gant was an innovative leader during his many years of service as a manager and director with Glen Raven. He fostered countless technical, financial and process improvements throughout the company while also encouraging the professional development of Glen Raven associates through continuing education.

Under Gant’s leadership, Glen Raven’s sales more than quintupled and sales per employee more than doubled. One of his most important achievements for Glen Raven was the introduction of synthetic awning fabrics and creation of the Sunbrella® brand beginning in 1961. Sunbrella is today one of the world’s leading performance fabrics brands, recognized as the market leader for awnings, boating and furniture.

Not only did Gant foster innovation within Glen Raven, he also championed progressive thinking throughout the textile industry. Under his leadership, the company provided support for educational programs at N.C. State University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Institute of Textile Technology. In recognition of his support for the performance fabrics industry, Gant received a lifetime achievement award from the Industrial Fabrics Association International.

Gant was also a community leader, involved in numerous nonprofit organizations including Boy Scouts, Alamance Arts Council, his church and diocese, YMCA, United Way and Salvation Army.

GLEN RAVEN, N.C. – Leib Oehmig, president of Glen Raven Custom Fabrics, LLC, the makers of Sunbrella fabrics, has been named chief operating officer of Glen Raven, Inc. as part of a long-range plan for strengthening the parent company’s global operations.

In his new role, Oehmig will work closely with Allen E. Gant Jr., president and CEO of Glen Raven, and the company’s Executive Committee in setting business strategies, including plans for succession of executive leadership at Glen Raven.

"The breadth and complexity of our business has increased steadily during recent years, which will benefit greatly from Leib taking on the responsibilities as COO," Gant said. "Our goal will be to assure that Glen Raven’s associates have all of the resources they need to continue creating and delivering innovative products and services for our customers."

As part of their role as Glen Raven’s executive management team, Gant and Oehmig will also implement the company’s leadership succession plan. The succession plan calls for Oehmig and Gant to work together in executive leadership for Glen Raven over the next four years, culminating in Oehmig assuming the role of president and CEO at which time Gant will continue as chairman of the board of Glen Raven, Inc.

"My career at Glen Raven has been challenging and completely fulfilling as we’ve worked with associates all around the globe to transform Glen Raven into a global innovator serving customers in more than 132 different countries," Gant said. "I am looking forward to working with Leib and our Executive Committee and Directors to assure that we sustain this momentum and assure a smooth transition in leadership."

Gant joined Glen Raven in 1971 and became the third generation of his family to lead the company, which was founded in Alamance County,

N.C., in 1880. Gant was named president and CEO in 1999 and has guided Glen Raven through a period of transformation and growth, including expansion into Europe, Asia, India and Brazil while enhancing the strength of company brands, including Sunbrella and Dickson.

With bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Clemson University, Oehmig joined Glen Raven in 1989 and served as a member of the team that designed and built the company’s 1 million-sq.-ft. Sunbrella manufacturing center in Anderson, S.C. Oehmig subsequently served as site manager for the Anderson Plant and was named president of Glen Raven Custom Fabrics in 2009, with responsibilities for operations in North America, Europe and Asia.

"It is a distinct honor to be selected as chief operating officer and to work with Allen and the Executive Committee and Directors in providing strategic direction and leadership succession for our company," said

Oehmig, who will be the first non-family member to serve as president and CEO of Glen Raven. "From my career at Glen Raven, I have developed a deep appreciation for how our family-owned company has been built and sustained through the commitment of shareholders and the dedication and hard work of associates."

Glen Raven has also announced that Dave Swers, who is currently serving as vice president and assistant general manager for Glen Raven Custom Fabrics, will become president of Glen Raven Custom Fabrics. Swers has been with Glen Raven for more than 24 years and was instrumental in establishing the leadership position of Sunbrella fabrics within the casual furniture industry, leading sales and marketing teams and establishing long-term relationships with major furniture manufacturers.

Additionally, Suzie Roberts, vice president-business manager for decorative fabrics with Glen Raven Custom Fabrics, has been named vice president of sales for Glen Raven Custom Fabrics – Americas, encompassing awning, marine and furniture markets. Roberts joined Glen Raven with its acquisition of Dickson in 1998 and has fulfilled a key leadership role in sales and marketing for decorative fabrics.

Reporting to Roberts, Alexis Maklakoff, currently business manager for casual fabrics, has been named business manager for decorative fabrics. He has been with Glen Raven since 1997, previously focused on providing marketing and merchandising support for Glen Raven’s casual market customers.

In 1961, the first yard of Sunbrella fabric was woven in a Glen Raven factory in Burlington, N.C. This week, that same factory celebrated its grand opening as Sunbrella’s new world headquarters.

Glen Raven’s Chairman Allen Gant Jr. said a knack for innovation and change has kept Glen Raven, a company the Gant family started in 1880, and Sunbrella successful over the years. With this new headquarters, the company aims to honor that history through a remodel that both preserves the past and reminds people of the future.

“You’re in an environment where the opportunity for sharing and innovation was allowed to maximize. That’s what this is really all about,” said Gant. “Glen Raven has spent its entire history finding niches in consumer needs and solving industrial problems. We’ve been able to do that and build a pretty strong business. When you’ve been in business for 139 years, you understand the factor of change.”

The headquarters’ facility had previously been used to house spinning for the company up until 2013, and construction on the space, based on designs from New York-based architectural firm Tsao and McKown, began in 2014. Local architecture firm Plageman Architecture, and Samet Corporation, a locally based construction company, helped facilitate the completion of Tsao and McKown’s designs.

The completed space now includes numerous work spaces, collaborative areas, large conference rooms and auditoriums, showroom spaces and much more. On the front of the structure, a large glass wall has been added to connect the building visually to the rest of Glen Raven’s corporate campus. On the bottom floor, a coffee shop and indoor green space has been added. Sunbrella fabrics are incorporated throughout on the cushions and pillows of upholstered chairs in common seating areas, on the chairs in the coffee shop and in the form of drapes found throughout the office.

While the space has been highly modernized as a part of its transformation into the new headquarters, Glen Raven was also careful to preserve the building’s historic architecture, keeping its 118-year-old pinewood floor planks—embedded throughout with metal travelers dating back to the early years of production—and its original exposed structural beams and brickwork.

“We could have gone out and just built a new building, and quite frankly it would have been less expensive and not taken near the time this renovation has,” said Glen Raven CEO Lieb Oehmig. “But we don’t think it would have brought near the authenticity to the business, and we wanted to honor our rich heritage while inspiring people to think about the future.”

Sunbrella’s new facility opening is part of a greater growth project for Glen Raven. Currently, a welcome center for the entire Glen Raven campus adjacent to the Sunbrella headquarters is set to be completed this summer and, according to Gant, more is on the way.

“Our main goal is to tie all the campuses together, but right now we are still working on how we’re going to join the old part of the campus and the new part of the campus together,” Gant says. “We’ve also built in a lot of expansion opportunities into this new building. Currently we have about 120 associates here, but it could easily house twice that if not more in the future.”
