They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Cherry Grove Fishing Pier gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local SeaBlue Restaurant & Wine Bar or visit Cherry Grove Oceanfront Park, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Cherry Grove, NC, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

 Elderly Care Cherry Grove, NC

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your NC's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Cherry Grove, NC

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Cherry Grove, NC understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Cherry Grove, NC

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Cherry Grove, NC

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • The Legacy of North Myrtle Beach
  • River Park Senior Living, LLC
  • New Haven at Little River
  • Myrtle Beach Manor
  • Portside at Grande Dunes
  • Myrtle Beach Grove Senior Living

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-0 tornado touched down just after 10 p.m. Wednesday in the Cherry Grove area.

The agency said that a waterspout went ashore near Ocean Boulevard and 56th Avenue North with maximum winds of 85 miles per hour.

Watch home surveillance video that capture the moment the tornado came through the Cherry Grove area:

The tornado was about 30 yards wide and traveled a little over a mile and a half, according to the National Weather Service.

The tornado moved north-northwest and caused damage to two homes in the Cherry Grove area.

The North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue team said it saw roof damage to the homes. Crews also found “cosmetic structural damage” in several locations which included damage to siding, gutters and shingles.

Mitch Mooney believes the tornado ripped his brand-new A/C unit right off his home.

“It tore everything off of there. I had this shower slammed full of coolers and chairs and stuff, it pulled them all out, ripped those two walls off, ripped that post off and those two railings, blew my A/C off and put a hole into their house,” Mooney described.

The tornado then crossed Williams Creek into the Tidewater Golf Club, where it downed a few trees.

The National Weather Service added that there were a few brief spin-ups in the area of the waterspout as it came ashore.

The agency said it all lasted about two minutes but left some homeowners dealing with a good bit of damage.

But Mooney said his neighbors always come together to help one another out during difficult times.

“This is a great street to live, it really is. Way more thankful for them than anything else because you can’t buy friends,” Mooney said.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported from the tornado.

North Myrtle Beach Public Works and Building/Code Enforcement along with Santee Cooper also assisted at the scene.

Idalia downgraded to post-tropical cyclone

Idalia has become a post-tropical cyclone with maximum winds of 65 mph. The National Hurricane Center is expected to continue to provide advisories.

Idalia is in the Atlantic Ocean about 165 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras. It is moving east at 21 mph.

There is a tropical storm watch issued for Bermuda.

Three tornadoes – an EF1 tornado near Wilmington, an EF1 tornado in Leland and an EF0 tornado in St. James – hit North Carolina on Wednesday.

EF0 tornado hit St. James

An EF0 tornado with max wind speeds of 80 mph hit the town of St. James on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

The tornado formed near Highway 211 near Four Paws Veterinary Hospital, where it damaged the roof.

The NWs said the tornado moved northward near Executive Park Boulevard where it damaged another roof, downed a large tree and ripped off an air conditioning unit off the top of another building.

EF1 tornado hit Leland

An EF1 tornado with max wind speeds of 110 mph hit Leland on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

Tropical Storm Idalia spawned the tornado. It touched down near Clarendon Plantation Road along North Carolina Highway 133A.

An NWS storm survey team found several oak and pine trees down in the woods north of Clarendon Plantation Road. No buildings were impacted.

EF1 tornado hit near Wilmington

An EF1 tornado with max wind speeds of 100 mph hit near Wilmington on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

The NWS said a waterspout caused by Tropical Storm Idalia came ashore and became a tornado along Myrtle Grove Road near Tidalwalk Drive and lifted near Country Place Road in southern New Hanover County.

An NWS storm survey found several oak trees and pine trees snapped or uprooted along the tornado's path.

According to the NWS, a tree fell on a storage shed, and one home had a piece of aluminum siding pulled away from the home.

The NWS has confirmed three tornadoes on Wednesday in North Carolina due to severe weather conditions from Idalia.

Outer Banks business owners work to regroup after Idalia

Reef Beachwear manager Tom Cohen said Tropical Storm Idalia wasn't bad compared to other tropical storms and hurricanes he's endured in the past.

"This one's pretty calm, chill, compared to others," Cohen said. "I've had worse, mandatory evacuations.

"I had to go out here one time on a boat."

Cohen said customers can't visit his shop at 24782 North Carolina Highway 12 in Rodanthe because they can't drive due to flooding from Idalia.

"Usually, there is a lot more customers, and we tend to get more people this time of year, and now, we don't," Cohen said.

Cohen said he's worried about the financial effects.

Ocean Gourmet and Sea Treasures owner Tina Insley has been in business for 28 years.

"This is pretty typical," Insley said. "You'll see the water go out, and then, you'll watch the water come back in and it'll actualy fill up the lot."

Insley acknowledged every tropical storm and hurricane causes problems.

"Most of these businesses down here are seasonal businesses," Insley said. "They're not open year-round. so they're here when the customers, the tourists, are here."

Insley said the information provided by the state helped her make the necessary preparations.

Joanie Navitsky insisted Idalia didn't ruin her vacation to the Outer Banks.

"It's a sight to see," she said. "Lots of good videos. I've been adding day-by-day coverage of vacation."

Sufer Ryan DiMaria visited the Outer Banks from Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

"We enjoy chasing the different hurricane swells," DiMaria said. "We saw it on the forecast that it was going to be a good swell, and we had the time, so we made the trip up here."

DiMaria was leaving for home on Thursday.

Roof blown off near Myrtle Beach

The NWS confirmed there was an EF0 tornado on Wednesday in Cherry Grove.

Some of the most severe damage occurred Thursday in Cherry Grove near Myrtle Beach, where an unconfirmed tornado ripped a roof off a beach house. The roof blew behind the house and into a canal.

The homeowner, who lives in Southern Pines, was there when it happened. He said he was watching television when he received the tornado warning. When he opened his front door to move to the ground floor for shelter, he said his roof blew off "within seconds."

The man was uninjured, although part of the roof fell on top of him. His home was destroyed.

The National Weather Service will be in the Cherry Grove area Thursday to survey the damage.

Flooding brief along NC coast

WRAL reporters were stationed in Cumberland and Lee counties and along the NC coast, where our beaches saw the worst conditions late Wednesday and early Thursday.

Due to high surf and wind gusts, streets in Ocean Isle Beach were flooded by 4 p.m. on Wednesday as Idalia hugged the coast, dropping heavy rain. Flooding conditions were already improving at the coast Thursday morning.

Maximum wind gusts recorded at the coast were 56 mph in Wrightsville Beach and 52 mph in Wilmington. Locally, winds gusted as high as 39 mph in Fayetteville.

Tornadoes spotted in Brunswick County

In Brunswick County on Wednesday, two confirmed tornadoes touched down. One tornado was spotted on N.C. Highway 211 near St. James. Video shared on Facebook by the sheriff's office shows the dark funnel cloud.

The ceiling and roof at Four Paws Veterinary Hospital in Southport was badly damaged in the storm, and cleanup was underway Thursday morning as the worst winds and rain moved away.

In Ocean Isle Beach, most residents escaped major flooding and structure damage, although at least 5 inches of rain fell in 24 hours, causing isolated flooding in low-lying neighborhoods and homes near the sound. Storm debris also littered the beach and roads.

High surf remains dangerous for Labor Day weekend

In Wrightsville Beach and Ocean Isle, people were walking on the shores Thursday morning as the rain pulled away. According to WRAL meteorologist Anthony Baglione, the rain should move away from the coast completely late Thursday afternoon, although much of southeastern North Carolina remains under a flood watch until Friday.

Steven Still, director of emergency management for New Hanover County, said conditions were improving Thursday afternoon.

He urged people to be cautious in and about the water.

"If you are uncomfortable with your swimming abilities, don’t venture out," Still said.

Bacteria, rip currents both risks for NC beaches

Headed to the beach for the holiday weekend? North Carolina is asking people to stay out of coastal waters from Wright Memorial Bridge in Kitty Hawk all the way to the South Carolina state line due to stormwater runoff, which could contain harmful levels of bacteria.

Excess rain from Idalia forced some cities to pump floodwaters into the ocean, and people should "avoid swimming near ocean outfalls, including the wet sand where the floodwater is pumped, even if no sign is posted," according to the state.

As conditions continue to improve and Labor Day weekend arrives, there is some good news for beachgoers and people staying in the Triangle. Friday and the weekend will be dry, clear and sunny, with cooler highs in the 80s.

Between Hurricane Franklin and Tropical Storm Idalia, the main threat at the coast will be dangerous rip currents. It's a good idea to stay out of the ocean this weekend, WRAL meteorologists cautioned.

Rain totals for Tropical Storm Idalia

Idalia did not cause many trees to fall east of the Triangle, even at the coast.

In Fayetteville, some trees fell, and low-lying areas were flooded Wednesday night, especially in Festival Park due to Cross Creek overflow.

According to WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner, rainfall estimates in central NC as of Thursday morning were:

Much higher rain totals fell at the coast, including totals up to 7 inches in Southport. In Myrtle Beach on Wednesday, the tide gauge was above 9 feet, the sixth highest tide on record since 1987.

At one point, more than 26,000 customers were without power in North Carolina. By 11 a.m. on Thursday, outages in North Carolina were under 11,000, with most outages in coastal communities.

‘Tis the season for everything fall, and if it’s the taste of homemade goodness you happen to be craving this time of year, look no further than Cherry Grove Farm, a country treasure located just outside of Shippensburg on Cherry Grove Road.

As you drive down Cherry Grove Road you might not be sure your GPS has taken you in the right direction, but then you see it... a lot full of pumpkins, gourds, straw bales and colorful.

As you step outside of your vehicle and walk into the beautiful store, you are greeted by a room full of festive fall décor, rows of baked goods and smiling faces with a friendly, “Good morning!”

This small family-owned operation blossomed from a roadside stand across from the current location into a full-time business for owners Loren and Elizabeth Oberholtzer.

“We started out with produce in the spring of 2017, actually we just had a table by the road that first year, across the road, then we added a small building in the fall and then moved the building across the road to where we are now, and added more room to where we have actually doubled in size,” explained Loren, who shares in running the business with his wife.

Inside the store, one instantly feels at home with a sense of which season is to come. Filled with everything from fresh baked goods, fresh frozen cuts of meats and wreaths, to fresh produce, homemade soaps and seasonal craft creations made of corn stalks and straw, the Oberholtzers have stocked their store with just about everything imaginable for fall decorating and snacking!

The fresh frozen cuts of meat are Black Angus beef raised on the farm at their Cherry Grove location, which has been USDA processed and brought back to the farm to be sold. They also sell chicken, which was also raised on the farm. Oberholtzer said if all goes well, they hope to have pork added to the meat line next year.

“Everything is raised right here on the farm, and having the meat for sale has gone very well so far. We’re really happy with how things have turned out, and we also sell quarters and halves of beef, so look for more of that in the future,” Loren said, noting that people seem to like the idea of being able to shop local and avoid the grocery stores.

The baked goods in the store are the product of Finger Lickin’ Eats & Sweets LLC, who are actually neighbors of the Oberholtzers.

“We’re very happy with them. Everyone seems to enjoy everything that they make,” he said.

Delicious whoopie pies, breads, pies and cookies line the tables, especially on Friday and Saturday mornings. The majority of the produce is grown on the farm, as well, with the exception of some the fruits, which they bring in from other areas. They grow and sell their own strawberries in the spring, as well as pumpkins in the fall.

Many of the crafts that adorn the walls and counter areas are homespun, including wreaths made by Loren’s father.

“He uses almost every part of the corn stalk for wreaths and the tassel crafts,” Loren explained.

Loren’s parents actually started the business in 2010 at their home at another location, selling produce and then adding mums and pumpkins in the fall. Since then, the younger Oberholtzer has taken over.

Loren and Elizabeth farm 37 acres, with 10 of those acres being produce that they sell at the store. They also grow approximately 20-plus varieties of pumpkins and gourds in 2 acres that are also sold at the store. He said of the 2 acres of pumpkins that they grow, almost all of them are gone by the end of October.

So, if you’re looking for all things pumpkin or fall, stop by Cherry Grove Farm located at 99 Cherry Grove Road today…you’ll definitely find something to suit your fall decorating fancy!

Cherry Grove Farm is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, May through October. For more information, call: (717) 477-8711.

An angler was caught in North Myrtle Beach for keeping more flounder than allowed per state law, officials said.

In a Facebook post, South Carolina Game Wardens said an officer conducted a investigation on a vessel Saturday from Tabor City, N.C. that had 25 flounder on the boat with 17 of them being as small as 10 inches long. The fisherman initially told the officer that he had not caught any fish.

The post, which garnered over 300 shares and 200 comments, shows pictures of the flounder the wildlife officer found on the boat.

In July, a law went into effect that specifies size limits and the number of flounder fisherman are allowed to keep. The limit is five flounder per person each day or 10 per boat each day. The minimum length of each founder must be 16 inches. Previously, each flounder had to be at least 15 inches, and the catch limit per day was 10 fish per person or 20 fish per boat.

State lawmakers approved the bill to “reduce the harvest of southern flounder in South Carolina waters, allowing the population to begin recovery,” according to a June press release by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Results from a 2019 regional study and a study conducted by biologists from the department found that southern flounder numbers were down due to overfishing.

There was also a public survey, which showed that South Carolina fisherman shared similar concerns about the dwindling flounder numbers.

“These new management measures will end the overharvest of flounder, allowing the fishery to begin to rebuild,” Phil Maier, who oversees the agency’s Marine Resources Division, said in the release. “We’re grateful to the angling community for sharing their vision for the fishery and to the leaders who worked hard to craft this solution. We look forward to seeing this popular fish become a more common catch along the South Carolina coast.”

The new rules apply to all the flounder species found in South Carolina waters, including, gulf, summer and southern flounder.

David Lucas, a spokesman for the state department, said he doesn’t know how often anglers are cited for illegally catching flounder, but said in an email that officers “regularly patrol inshore waters and make routine checks” to ensure fisherman are following the law.

“Flounder are a popular species targeted by saltwater anglers and are targeted using both hooks-and-lines or by “gigging,” which is done at night,” Lucas said. “Flounder are known for being excellent table fare.”

Anyone who is found guilty of breaking any of those rules can be fined up to $500 or face jail time for up to 30 days.

“Each fish taken, possessed, sold, offered for sale, purchased, or attempted to be sold, purchased, brought to the dock, or landed in violation of this article is a separate offense,” according to state law.
