SAXAPAHAW, N.C. — Just a week after Tropical Storm Chantal swept through Eastern and Central North Carolina, the cleanup efforts continue, with one local business in Saxapahaw facing a daunting recovery.
Lauren Miller, owner of The Bridge Wellness Center, described her shock upon discovering her business underwater. "Shock, shock, surprise," she said. Her husband was the first to witness the devastation. "My husband came down here around 4 o'clock in the morning," Miller said. "He came down the stairs and took a picture. I wake up and he comes and shows me a picture that has the waterline up to the top pane of the windows on the doors."
The Bridge Wellness Center, a community hub for yoga and fitness, suffered extensive flood damage. "The whole wellness center has been completely gutted 18 inches above the flood line," Miller explained. "All of the walls removed, all the flooring ripped up, the subflooring ripped up, all of the water out, we’ve set fans out, dehumidifiers for mold remediation."
Emergency management officials reported that the Haw River crested at over 32 feet during the Fourth of July weekend, levels not seen since Hurricane Fran in 1996. Despite the widespread damage in Saxapahaw, Miller remains determined to find purpose in the aftermath. "It was a feeling of like, 'wow, this flood gave me the opportunity that I needed to redesign the space in a way that works better to serve our community,'" she said.
Miller expressed gratitude for the swift community support. "I was really taken aback by A, how quickly everyone jumped on it, and B, how many volunteers just came out and spent the entire day here," she said. The outpouring of help has kept her spirits high. "After I cried, it was like, overwhelming gratitude," Miller added.
Despite the loss of the building's structure, Miller is thankful for what truly matters. "We lost the structure of the building, but we didn’t lose any lives," she said.

Cleanup began Tuesday morning for a beloved Saxapahaw preschool after floodwaters from Chantal damaged its building.
The preschool shares space with the Saxapahaw United Methodist Church, which sits right beside the Haw River.
Water rose to the pews in the church and also damaged the preschool.
Renee Lynch started the preschool 12 years ago. She says it was hard to see her heart and soul underwater.
“It's hard when you spend 40 hours a week in a space watching children, like, laugh and play and have so much fun, and then you just sort of see it demolished,” Lynch said.
On Tuesday morning, Lynch and teachers at the preschool began salvaging what they could.
“It's a lot of dirt. A lot of mud, a lot of debris from, you know, classroom materials and things like that. But in reality, there is still a lot that's salvageable," Lynch said.
A parent representative is working to find child care for the 28 families with children enrolled in the preschool. They are working to find a temporary location.
Lynch was told early estimates say it could take up to six months to rebuild. She says this shows the awesome power of Mother Nature.
Lynch said, “It's really humbling, because it's such a reminder that you have no control over so many things. And you can, you know, have all your boxes checked and think everything's wonderful. But Mother Nature can have something different in mind.”

SAXAPAHAW, N.C. — As the sun rose over Saxapahaw Tuesday morning, floodwaters near the Buddy Collins Memorial Bridge receded significantly.
It is a stark contrast to scenes just a day earlier. The entrance to the bridge remains closed for safety, officials have not given a timeline for reopening.
Residents are beginning to take stock of the damage left behind by Storm Chantal, which swept through the region over the weekend, causing widespread flooding and power outages.
“I’ve never seen anything like this hit so fast,” said longtime resident Kyle Decker, who recently retired from Alamance County Parks and Recreation. “The last time we had flooding like this was during Hurricanes Michael and Florence. It took about three months to clean up after that and that’s probably the bare minimum this time.”
Decker said the park next to the Buddy Collins Memorial Bridge has been “completely washed out,” with trails, parking areas and hammocks buried under debris and mud.
“It’s going to take at least three months to get things cleaned up,” he said. “The park probably won’t even open for another two to three weeks, just to make it safe enough to use the parking lot and trails again. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
That work began immediately as volunteers and neighbors started helping each other get back on their feet.
Saxapahaw resident Toni Coley said her home was spared and she’s opened it up to friends who lost power or suffered flooding.
“I have a lot of friends who don’t have electricity and got some damage, so I’ve opened up my home to people who need to take showers,” Coley said.
As of Tuesday morning, Duke Energy’s outage map showed about 39 homes in the area still without power. Crews remain on scene, working to restore service as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, the community hub and coffee shop Cup 22 has transformed into a staging area for donations and emergency supplies. Volunteers began collecting bottled water, food, and cleaning equipment as early as 8am Tuesday morning.
“A lot of the waters have just started to recede, so we’re just now getting in to figure out how bad the damage really is,” said Carey Kirk, a community advocate. “Right now, we need muck-and-gut equipment, generators, and dehumidifiers."
Other items include: bottled water, walkie-talkies and wet vacuums.
Kirk added that all donations will be distributed directly to affected residents and businesses in the area.
Local officials have not yet released a damage estimate or cleanup timeline, but residents say recovery efforts will likely stretch through the summer.

The Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter in Durham for people displaced by flooding from the Eno River. The shelter is at Emmanuel AME Church at 2018 Riddle Road in Durham. A Tropical Storm Chantal Community Giving Fund has been established to support local recovery efforts across Orange County and the Towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough.
This fund is a collaborative effort between the county and each town to make sure donated funds are prioritized for critical needs and are equitably distributed across the county.

Orange County's Recovery Assistance Center will provide essential services and support to affected residents through 7pm Saturday, July 12 at the Drakeford Library Complex at 203 S. Greensboro St. in Carrboro.

There is a boil water notice for the Town of Hillsborough as of Monday. Boil water for drinking, cooking or toothbrushing until further notice. Conserve water by not washing clothes or dishes or running water unless necessary. The Town of Hillsborough will have a limited supply of water until the river recedes, the facilities can be sanitized, and the drinking water can be processed to refill the clear well and water tanks.

The storm, which made landfall Sunday in South Carolina as a tropical storm, brought heavy rain to central North Carolina, with areas in Alamance, Orange, Durham and Chatham counties seeing the most precipitation.
Storms like Chantal are categorized based on wind speed, not potential danger from flooding, storm surges or tornadoes. And as storms make landfall and lose access to warm water that fuels them, they slow down, which can cause prolonged rain in specific areas.
In addition to flash flooding, which led to water rescues, evacuations and two deaths, as of Monday at 8:30 p.m., multiple tornadoes associated with the storm were spotted.
On Monday, as skies cleared and rain paused, communities across the region began to return to their homes and businesses to assess the damage and begin recovery.
But meteorologists warn of additional storms and showers later in the week — which could cause additional flooding, particularly in areas that received the heaviest precipitation over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
? The Eno River flooded Sunday night. By early Monday, more than 80 people in Durham County were rescued by boat, and dozens more were evacuated on foot.
? High Meadow Road, Omega Road, Felicia Street and Greymont Drive in Durham were affected by flooding.

? Overnight, more than 60 people were evacuated from apartment complexes in Chapel Hill. They began returning home Monday morning to take stock of damage and salvage whatever possible.
? Fallen trees and flooding blocked roads in and near Mebane, Hillsborough and Carrboro.
