CENTRAL CITY — Central City found itself in a familiar situation under unfamiliar circumstances.
The Wildcats entered their regular season’s final week with very little to play for. Only this time, they did so with a district title in hand.
Sixth-ranked Central City enjoyed a coronation night, slipping and sliding in the rain, dispatching Midland, 66-18, Friday night in an 8-Player high school football game.
Quarterback Jayden Hanson accounted for the first five Central City scores, running for three and connecting with Mekhi Benton on two more as the Wildcats seized a 50-6 halftime lead on Midland (3-5, 2-4).
For a program that has produced a 37-57 record over the past decade, it was an experience the Wildcats (7-1, 6-0) thoroughly enjoyed.
“It was fun,” Benton said. “Especially for senior night. We’ve come a long way from not being as successful as in our younger years. Everybody said we should be better as we get older if we stick to it.”
“It made it more relaxing this week, knowing we had the district championship,” Central City Coach Matt Miers said.
The Wildcats are preparing for just their fourth trip to the playoffs. The junior and senior classes took their lumps as freshmen and sophomores, finishing 2-6 in 2020 and 3-6 in 2021.
The turnaround began last season. The Wildcats finished 8-2, falling to eventual runner-up Easton Valley in the second round of the playoffs.
The success is something most in Central City saw coming.
“I kind of knew, and all of the families around us knew in second or third grade when we were playing flag football together that we would be pretty good,” Hanson said.
The senior class went undefeated in seventh and eighth grade.
“We knew that they were really good in youth and middle school,” Miers said. “That doesn’t always translate, but we knew that these guys would come together and develop like they have.
“We saw it last year and again this year.”
The Wildcats are no one-man show, either. You won’t find any 1,000-yard rushers on this team. Five different players have between 150 and 600 yards rushing. Hanson has shown the ability to move the ball down field through the air.
Spreading the wealth is very much a part of the plan.
“Our offense works best when we have that kind of balance,” Miers said. “You could see it tonight. Jayden threw several touchdowns. He ran for some. Matt (Klostermann) and Aiden (Klostermann) both ran for some. That’s just the way our offense is designed. We average almost 10 yards per carry, so it’s definitely a good balance.”
“I think it’s good,” Benton said. “Because you can’t key on one player in the playoffs. If one gets hurt, goes out, we still have others.”
Now comes the business end of the season. After getting a taste a year ago, the Wildcats are eager to begin the postseason journey.
“Practices have to be sharp,” Hanson said. “There can’t be any messing around. It’s gotta be focused practice if we want to go to the Dome this year.”
The Wildcats are battle tested. Their lone defeat came on the opening night, losing 44-36 to top-ranked Winfield-Mount Union, a game in which Central City surrendered three touchdowns on third-and-long.
“That was a great game,” Miers said. “I think both teams learned a lot about themselves from that. It would be a great matchup in the state championship game.”

It just wasn’t Lone Tree’s night.
After four straight wins, the Lions were eyeing a potential district title when playing Central City. Instead, the Lions lost 44-13 to the now 6-1 Wildcats. It’s the only district blemish in Lone Tree’s year.
The Lions still have the playoffs locked up, but a district title would have been a nice addition to their well-played season.
“I was proud of our team for how they competed against Central City. Our players competed for four quarters against a really good football team. That is something we can build on,” head coach Joe Donovan said. “Putting ourselves in situations like playing for a district championship builds experience for our kids so in the future, the moment isn’t too big for them.”
Central City was a tough opponent for Lone Tree to handle.
“[Central City was] big and physical on the offensive line, which is a challenge for us,” Donovan said. “As a matchup, we are smaller and built more on speed and when we face a team that is really good up front, it gives us problems.”
Lone Tree does strive on its players’ versatility, being able to line up on offense and score points then line up on defense to swarm the ball.
“We have a lot of guys that play multiple positions, which helps us with our low numbers,” Donovan said. “When Central City puts long drives together and we are playing more defense, that will wear down a team.”
The Lions also have managed to stay healthy this season, furthering their success.
Next week, they take on the Easton Valley River Hawks to face a new challenge, a quarterback who throws. That being Easton Valley’s Keagan Lee who has 1,499 yards through the air.
This new challenge means a change of pace for the Lone Tree defense.
“We go from a primarily rushing team to a passing team. I feel like we have to get pressure so their quarterback can’t stand and get comfortable throwing the ball from the pocket,” Donovan said.
Another aspect of Lone Tree’s game is the turnover margin. Their players could be seen swatting at the ball every chance they got, causing one turnover, and forcing another fumble against Central City.
“We constantly talk to our players about looking for opportunities to cause turnovers. One of our goals is to win the turnover margin each game,” Donovan said.
The Lions get one more chance to perfect regular season football before the playoffs kick-off Oct. 20, when they play Easton Valley on Friday, Oct. 13, on the road.

CENTRAL CITY — Jayden Hanson could have gotten frustrated.
Instead, he got “fueled.”
“I made two mistakes (in pass coverage) that let them score,” Hanson said. “That fueled me. I had to get revenge.”
Hanson’s first three interceptions of the season highlighted a seven-takeaway performance, and sixth-ranked Central City recovered from a sluggish first half to push past Lansing Kee, 52-28, in an 8-Player first-round playoff football game Friday night at the Alex Evans Athletic Complex.
“We played the worst half of our season,” said Aidan Klostermann, who rushed for 243 yards and three second-half touchdowns. “This is the playoffs. You lose, you go home.”
Central City (8-1) won its eighth consecutive game and will host a second-round game next week. Their opponent will be revealed Saturday morning.
There’s a pretty good chance that they’ll be without Matthew Klostermann, who suffered an apparent knee injury midway through the second quarter.
“He’s one of our key players,” Hanson said. “To see him go down was tragic. I hope we get him back. We need him going forward.”
Kee quarterback Dalton Mudderman riddled the Wildcats early, passing for 158 first-half yards as the Hawks (5-4) took a 20-14 lead into the locker room.

But the Wildcats dialed up more heat on Mudderman after intermission, and that made all the difference.
After Central City tied the game on a broken play (Hanson picked up a loose ball and spotted Mekhi Benton, who took it the distance for a 59-yard TD reception to make it 20-20), Daiton Price and Favre Weber teamed to make the play of the game.
On third-and-5 from the Kee 23, Price blitzed and forced a Mudderman fumble. Weber picked it up an rambled 8 yards for the go-ahead score.
“That was huge,” Central City Coach Matt Miers said. “(Mudderman) is great. We couldn’t keep giving him time to throw.”
The Wildcats didn’t trail again. A 30-point third quarter turned that 20-14 halftime deficit into a 44-28 advantage.
“Jayden had a heck of a game,” Aidan Klostermann said. “It was crazy, to come out of halftime and score, then the defense gets a scoop and score ... I think it took a lot out of them.”
Central City finished with five interceptions and recovered two fumbles.
Before the injury, Matt Klostermann ran for 89 yards, including a 65-yard TD sprint. Hanson passed for 111 yards.
For Kee, Mudderman was 14 of 34 with those five interceptions and 215 yards. His touchdown strikes of 39 and 34 yards, both to Carter Seitz, sent Kee to an early 12-6 lead.
Central City held the Hawks to 36 rushing yards on 23 carries.
Miers said he is “not a yeller or screamer.” His halftime message was this:
