LONG VALLEY, NJ — The Long Valley community is coming together to support a family that “lost everything” in a house fire last week.
On July 30, a family’s home was destroyed after a fire engulfed the residence. The family lost everything, including their English Bulldog, Bilio, who was “more than a pet — he was family.”
Luckily, the other family members were able to make it out safely.
However, the family has lost all of their belongings and stability, according to relative Matthew Burkhardt.
One of the family members’ employers, Hoffman’s Supply Home and Garden Center, has launched a donation campaign to assist the family members in this trying time.
“We are collecting clothes (men's size large), non-perishable food, gift cards, and anything else you feel called to donate,” a Hoffman’s Supply post read. “Your donations are appreciated more than you know while we help him rebuild from scratch and move on.”
Hoffman’s Supply, located at 35 East Mill Road in Long Valley, is accepting donations Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Additionally, a GoFundMe has been launched to support the family.
“This wasn’t just any house — it was the home I grew up in, the one my mom bought on her own as a single mother. She worked hard her whole life to provide for our family, and she poured everything into that house,” said GoFundMe organizer Matthew Burkhardt. “At the time of the fire, my mom, my nephew, my uncle, and my brother all lived there. Now, they’ve been left with nothing but the clothes on their backs… They're trying to stay strong, but the loss is overwhelming. We’re asking for any support you can give — whether it’s $5, $50, or simply sharing this with others.”
All funds raised through the GoFundMe will go towards temporary shelter, clothing, basic necessities (food, toiletries, medications), and rebuilding efforts and recovery.

LONG VALLEY, NJ — A Long Valley filmmaker is seeking local talent to star in his new, upcoming web series.
“The Bully’s Club” is being produced by local filmmaker Antonio Sciortino of DreamScape Pictures, a Long Valley-based production company. Residents may know Sciortino from his indie films like “Mailbox,” “Little Dream,” and the upcoming horror film “Light Beyond The Tracks,” based on Long Valley’s Hookerman legend.
DreamScape Pictures is seeking six young actresses, ages 12 to 14, to star in the upcoming YouTube series. Applicants should be able to sing, dance, and act for the production.
“This new mini-series explores the complex reality of bullying, going beyond stereotypes to uncover the reasons behind why kids bully, and how pain often hides beneath the labels,” Sciortino said. “Through music, dance, and raw emotional storytelling, this series shows that transformation is possible—not only for those who are bullied, but for those who bully, too.”
Each of the six main characters of “The Bully’s Club” falls under the following labels: The Diva, The Loner, The Perfectionist, The Brainiac, The Fashionista, and The Rebel. When the six very different girls are subjected to after-school detention, they find courage, healing, and friendship through music and creativity.
“Our goal is not just to entertain but to spark conversations about bullying prevention, empathy, and second chances,” Sciortino said. “This series gives voice to the emotional challenges young people face today and demonstrates how art can heal and unite.”
The project is being directed by Anna Hill, with choreography by Shanna Heverly.
“Because every bully has a story,” the series’ tagline reads.

More than 100 parents have signed a petition calling for an after-school program for children in the school district. One of the biggest concerns for parents is needing to take time off work to arrange pick-up for the kids after school gets out.
“Currently, there is a significant shortage of after-school care options in our community,” the petition reads. “The existing programs have long waitlists, leaving numerous families without access to this essential service. With school dismissal at 2 p.m., it is simply not feasible for most working parents to coordinate pickups without either drastically reducing their work hours or arranging costly alternative care… This is especially challenging given that there are no other after-school programs available within the district.”

The two current options for after-school care are run by third-party entities, Catholic Charities and Musconetcong Valley Community Center. Petition creator Nadine Tutela, a mother of four who works as a registered nurse, says she’s been on these programs’ waiting list for a year, and is not alone.
“The families in my community are in desperate need of after-school childcare… Those of us that do not get a spot are faced with the difficult decision to either quit their job, reduce their work hours, or pay for private care,” Tutela told Patch. “I believe parents should be able to send their children to public school and be able to work normal business hours.”
The petition is asking the Washington Township Board of Education to “prioritize exploring the feasibility, funding options, and implementation timeline for a district-operated aftercare service that can meet the needs of all families, not just a fortunate few.”
The next Washington Township BOE meeting is scheduled for Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.

LONG VALLEY, NJ — A Long Valley high schooler has been honored by the state and her hometown as she was crowned Miss New Jersey’s Teen recently.
Delaney Higgins, a 17-year-old at West Morris Central High School, was recently given the honor of being crowned Miss New Jersey’s Teen. The young lady is enrolled in the school’s International Baccalaureate Program while dually enrolled at Seton Hall University.
This was the teen’s third year participating in the Miss America Opportunity, and she has earned over $15,000 in scholarships to support her education.
In addition to focusing on her education, Delaney is a three-year Team USA member for baton twirling, currently ranked Top 10 in the world, and a multi-time national champion.
The 2025 Miss New Jersey’s Teen is also very active in community service, with her initiative being “No Limits: Inspiring Acceptance and Independence for All Diverse-Abilities.” Delaney’s inspiration for her community involvement is motivated by her twin brother, who was born without his right arm. She strives to advocate for “inclusion, acceptance, and greater independence for individuals of all diverse abilities.”
Delaney was recently honored by the Washington Township committee for her achievements.
Mayor Michael Marino issued a proclamation congratulating Delaney on her success and recognizing “not only her poise and grace, but also her commitment to academic excellence, community service, and leadership among her peers.”
Delaney aspires to become a high school social worker, focusing on “helping students with intellectual disabilities succeed,” and “making a lasting impact on the lives of others.”
