New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill has chosen Dr. Dale Caldwell, the president of Centenary University in Warren County, as her running mate.
“I’m proud to select Dale Caldwell as my Lieutenant Governor running mate because we share a commitment to public service and challenging the status quo,” Sherrill said in a release Friday morning.
She said that she and Caldwell are determined to make New Jersey more affordable, while protecting “Our rights and freedoms from Trump’s attacks.”
Caldwell is the son of civil rights leaders who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama.
“He’s followed in his parents’ footsteps, and he has always been a voice for the voiceless,” Sherrill said.
Caldwell said he has dedicated his life in service of his church, his students, and his community.
Ben Dworkin, director of the Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship at Rowan University, said Sherrill selected Caldwell because she was looking for an “out-of-the-box” running mate.
“Caldwell brings diversity as an African American male, and also some real experience in governance,” he said. “He was a school board member for decades; he also has strong experience in education and in non-profit management.”
Dworkin said Mikie Sherrill is trying to define herself within the Democratic tradition while setting herself apart from stalwarts such as Gov. Phil Murphy. “She wants to be able to say this is how I’m going to be a little bit different.”
Micah Rasmussen, director of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University, said most of the time voters don’t make their decision on the number two person.
“Mikie Sherrill wanted to pick somebody she was comfortable with, somebody she thought would be highly competent, somebody who has done a lot of things in New Jersey,” he said. “Dale Caldwell is well regarded in the higher education community, in his church and among civil rights leaders.”
In addition to serving as Centenary University president, Caldwell is also a pastor in the United Methodist Church and a former deputy commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs.
He also served as the executive director of the Rothman Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Fairleigh Dickinson University and as president of the Educational Services Commission.
Caldwell, an avid tennis player and coach, was president and CEO of the United States Tennis Association Eastern Section, founded the Black Tennis Hall of Fame and is a member of the Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame.

Dr. Dale Caldwell is the President of Centenary University. He formerly served as the executive director of the Rothman Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Fairleigh Dickinson University, President of the Educational Services Commission (ESCNJ), Deputy Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), founding executive director of the Newark Alliance, and senior manager at Deloitte Consulting. He volunteered on the New Brunswick school board for 26 years, serving as president for six.
He is a pastor of the Covenant United Methodist Church in Plainfield, NJ, where he builds a congregation based on the values of inclusivity, community, and acceptance. He is guided by Proverbs 31:89, which directs us to "speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves."
Service to others was instilled in Dale from a young age. His mother was a teacher and his father, Rev. Gilbert Caldwell, was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement who knew and marched arm-in-arm with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dale is an avid tennis player and coach. He was the President and CEO of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Eastern Section, founded the Black Tennis Hall of Fame, and is a member of the Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame.
Dale graduated from Princeton University in 1982, earned his Master’s in Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1988, and a Doctorate in Education Administration from Seton Hall University in 2017. Dale currently lives in New Brunswick, NJ, and has one daughter, Ashley, who is studying public policy at Rutgers University.

Angeloni’s Restaurant + Pizzeria is located near the corner of Bloomfield Avenue + Brookside Avenue. This restaurant has options like pizza, soups, sandwiches, + entrees focusing on chicken, veal, + seafood. If visiting with friends or family, order a thin crust pizza to share, along with the portobello mushrooms + roasted peppers, Hotsy Totsy Shrimp (hot sauce with garlic and marinara), + cold antipasto.
Casa Nora Italian Bistro is a newer restaurant in the Italian dining scene in Caldwell. Those driving by can’t miss this spot as this corner space has a bold, blue exterior. The style looks simple + modern with a blue statement wall inside. Some options are Chicken Valdostana (topped with smoked prosciutto, fontina cheese in a marsala wine sauce), + Gnocchi’s Casa Nostra (wild mushrooms, asparagus, pancetta cooked in a white creamy brandy sauce).
Divina Ristorante is conveniently located on Bloomfield Avenue across the street from Shop Rite Wines + Spirits. This BYOB establishment makes it easy for diners. Diners can grab a bottle of white to split with friends and try the linguini with scallops + broccoli, or a bottle of red and taste dishes like veal with wild mushrooms or Chicken Mascotta (with shitake mushrooms, artichokes, sundried tomatoes in marsala wine).
If looking for something a little different than the original cheese pie, make sure to stop by Forte Pizzeria + Ristorante. Forte has a slightly upscale pizzeria-style seating by the main counter. To the left upstairs, there is a dining room. The space also has a semi-formal room for private parties. Diners should consider entrees like Chicken Saltimbocca (layered with spinach + prosciutto, topped with mozzarella in a brown sauce) or shrimp marinara (sautéed in garlic, olive oil + tomato sauce, served with salad or over pasta). MG suggests stopping by for pizza and asking for a baked ziti slice or a Caesar salad slice.
Fresco Market + Catering is located near the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue, Elm Road, + University Drive. If unsure where to start, Fresco can meet the needs of any Italian food craving. Sections of the store are divided into sandwiches + cold dishes, hot dishes, + a section of rotating dishes. There are also Italian delicacies for sale such as fresh mozzarella, pasta, + olive oils. MG recommends asking about the Chicken Parm Garlic Knot — it’s a sandwich that’s out of this world with chicken parmigiana on the inside + a garlic knot bun.
Il Vecchio Cafe is located in Calandra’s Italian Village on Bloomfield Avenue. The restaurant features dark, tiled floors with dark dining chairs to match. Large windows surround the dining space with long, dramatic curtains. The space also has a pizza oven behind a rustic stone counter. The best day to visit for the full “Made-in-Italy experience” is Tuesday because it’s Pasta Night. If diners can’t make up their minds, pasta flights are available for a choice of three different pastas or three different versions of gnocchi. For those who are not pasta lovers, try the Sole Oreganata (topped with seasoned bread crumbs in a lemon white wine sauce, served with with chef’s starch and vegetables), or the Pollo Ortolano (breaded chicken cutlet over tomato bruschetta, + red onions topped with baby arugula and balsamic glaze).
La Famiglia Ristorante is located on Bloomfield Avenue and attracts diners with its warm string lights outside. Inside the space, the decor has warm colors walls with a textured pattern. The main dining room holds a painted mural + drop chandeliers. La Famiglia has featured specials of the week that vary, but traditional items to try are the Salmon Puttanesca (Fillet of salmon sautéed with tomatoes, capers, kalamata olives, and anchovies, served with mixed vegetables + garlic mashed potatoes) or Eggplant Carbonara (with garlic bread).
If looking for a place where the party doesn’t stop, make the next stop at La Taverna. This cocktail lounge is located in Calandra’s Italian Village.
