Riding the wave of excitement from the hugely successful Fleadh Cheoil Loch Garman in Gorey earlier this month, New Ross will be the first location on the countywide map to host the dynamic Fringe Fleadh, situated in centre of the beautifully redeveloped space at Brennan’s Lane.
The Fringe Fleadh, which is an initiative by Wexford County Council, is promised to be a vibrant series across the county, with the New Ross town centre set to come alive to the sound of traditional Irish music from the much-loved Danecastle.
On Saturday, June 7 at 2.30 pm, the live performance in Brennan’s Lane, will create a spirited afternoon of music and community celebration. The special outdoor session is the ideal set up which was much anticipated by the District Manager, Alan Fitzhenry, and Deputy Chief Executive of Wexford County Council and Director of Services, Eamonn Hore, as they seen the Brennan’s Lane project recently come to fruition. The laneway now boasts a beautiful open space, with a smaller area enclosed with a roof, a mural, benches and greenery which is the newest area in town to host street sessions of live music, trad sessions, and community events, while arts and crafts markets are also in the works.
“Here the New Ross Municipal District, along with the councillors and the staff, we’re really excited to see the crowds gather for the Fringe Fleadh in Brennan’s Lane," said Mr Fitzhenry, adding that the carefully chosen location “is a beautiful new public realm space and this event will really showcase the potential of the laneway and all its great uses.”
Seeing the much needed clean-up project of Brennan’s Lane fulfilled in time for local musicians to utilise the space throughout the summer goes in hand with the aim of the Fringe Fleadh, which is to showcase local talent and spaces on our doorstep and to embrace the arts in more than just a traditional setting. It was previously reported in the New Ross Standard on April 25, 1991, that “Brennan’s Lane needs a clean-up”, however, other reports in the paper in relation to the area dated back to 1898, when a “Total Abstinence Meeting in New Ross” was held by the Protestant Total Abstinence Society in the hall of the Hill School. The Hill School, which was originally built in 1799, to the rear of Brennan’s Lane was known as St. Mary’s Terrace, and said to be the birth place of Michael O’Hanrahan, who was a member of the Gaelic League and served in the 1916 Easter Rising.
The pride of both Mr Hore, and Mr Fitzhenry, in the restoration appears timeless, despite the laneway being reopened in April, as they both continue to observe the delight of locals who access the historic area, but in its newly brightened and colourful capacity. At the opening, Mr Hore said the project showcases Wexford County Council’s “dedication to enhancing our communities, fostering pride, and supporting local vitality.”
"The refurbishment of Brennan’s Lane has transformed it into a safer, more accessible, and vibrant space for residents, businesses, and visitors alike,” he added.
With the schedule for the Fringe Fleadh quickly taking shape, Mr Fitzhenry said having seen the AIMS Choral Festival utilise the space last week, “a very large crowd of over 300 people were in the laneway and there was still loads of space, but it was just fantastic to see everyone there enjoying the great weather and we hope that atmosphere continues for the Fringe Fleadh in June.”
Performances will continue to take place each Saturday in June, with Saturday, June 28 expected to filled with an entire day of live entertainment.
The Fringe Fleadh will also take place in other areas across the county, from Seisiún by the Sea in Morriscastle to performances by The Blackwater Céilí Band at St. Martin’s Community Centre in Piercestown, and the Enniscorthy Irish Folk and Ballad Festival, the programme is packed with musical highlights. Supported by Comhaltas branches, community groups, and local performers, each event is a celebration of Irish identity, heritage, and community pride delivered in a warm, inclusive, and joyful atmosphere.

New Ross Sparks Basketball Club recently hosted its highly-anticipated awards night, celebrating the outstanding achievements and dedication of its players, coaches, committee members, and volunteers throughout the season.
Held at The Parish Pump in Rosbercon, New Ross last month, the night was filled with excitement, recognition, and heartfelt appreciation from all involved with the club. The newly renovated lounge at The Parish Pump was completely filled, with not an empty seat in sight as players, families, and supporters gathered to celebrate the club’s successful season. The enthusiastic crowd created a fantastic atmosphere, making the night truly memorable.
The club presented players across eight different groups, including Academy, U15 and U17 Girls, Ladies, Men, U15, U16, and U18 Boys, with a variety of awards to recognise standout performances on and off the court; athletes who were admired by their teammates and those who stood out to the coaching staff; and to celebrate promising young players making an impact in their respective categories.
Additional medals were awarded to players who demonstrated remarkable commitment throughout the season, as Coaches’ Pick Medals were presented to select Academy and U15 Boys players, personally chosen by the coaching staff for their dedication and improvement, while similarly, medals were presented to the U15 and U17 Girls for their impressive performances in the KSE League, highlighting their determination and teamwork.
The U18 Boys also received presentation medals to honour their dedication throughout the season.
One of the biggest highlights of the night was the celebration of the U16 Boys, who were awarded their KSE League winners’ medals and trophy. Their impressive journey to victory demonstrated their skill and commitment. In recognition of their inspirational coaching and leadership, Coaches Darren and Jack were presented with Top Coach awards by the club, celebrating their guidance and impact on the team.
To cap off the night, Nicola Gannon, the chairperson of New Ross Sparks Basketball Club, was awarded the Clubperson of the Year award, an honour voted for by the parents. “Her dedication, hard work, and passion for the club did not go unnoticed, making her a deserving recipient of this prestigious recognition,” said Amanda Mylett, on behalf of the committee.
The club also took a moment to show appreciation for the dedicated volunteers who contributed throughout the year, including table officials, St. Mary’s New Ross Hall manager, and one of the club’s biggest sponsors, the owner of Eurohome New Ross. “Their support was invaluable, with Eurohome New Ross playing a crucial role in sponsorship, it provided essential resources for the club, including the first-aid kits,” Ms Mylett added.
In addition, the club expressed gratitude to the coaches and committee members, whose tireless efforts ensure the club thrives. A heartfelt recognition was given to Anthony, Anne Marie, Nicola, John, Amanda, Jack, Darren, Laura, Aisling, and Martynas, honouring their dedication to the success and development of the club.
The committee members extended their thanks to The Parish Pump “for hosting such an important night for the club as their hospitality and support helped make the event a resounding success, providing a fantastic venue for the club’s annual celebration”.

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Ireland, H.E. Dr. Lahcen Mahroui paid a visit to all corners of the town alongside the Ceann Comhairle, Verona Murphy TD and Wexford County Council Director of Services, Eamonn Hore, as they followed the lead of history buff and dedicated New Ross tour guide, Myles Courtney.
Mr Courtney said “it was indeed an honour” to introduce the Ambassador to the history of New Ross, while he also shared with them the historic connections of the port with Mediterranean mariners.
“The walled city of Essaouira indeed has a lot in common with the medieval Norman walled town of New Ross,” he added.
A spokesperson for the Ambassador said the tour, which included several historic sites such as the Dunbrody Famine Ship and The Ros Tapestry in its new home on the Quay, highlighted “the rich cultural heritage of the region.”
“Fruitful discussions took place on ways to further strengthen the relationship between the Kingdom of Morocco and Ireland. A particular focus was placed on exploring avenues for deeper cooperation between the towns of New Ross and Essaouira, with the aim of building a new bridge of friendship and collaboration for the benefit of their respective communities,” they added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Murphy shared on her social media that Mr Courtney’s guided tour was “superb” and exchanges were both “insightful and inspiring throughout the visit.” She extended her gratitude to Mr Hore and Mr Connick for facilitating the visit, which is intended to create “cooperation and friendship… strengthening cultural and economic ties for years to come.”

Although not specifically referenced, it was later confirmed that a discussion at the June meeting of the New Ross Municipal District (NRMD) alluded to Deputy Murphy welcoming Lahcen Mahraoui, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, to New Ross on June 3. None of the New Ross councillors, including the cathaoirleach of the district, were invited.
“A dignitary was coming through the town and we should have been there to recognise him, but we weren’t,” said Cllr Michael Sheehan at the district meeting at The Tholsel.
“There is a very strict protocol that if a dignitary, informally or formally, is invited to the town, the first port of call is this chamber. They have to come here and be recognised by the cathaoirleach or a representative of the cathaoirleach. This is not an option, it is established protocol. This is why we’re elected to represent all the people of New Ross.”
Cllr Sheehan received support from Cllr John Dwyer who said this wasn’t the first time in recent memory where the chamber had been overlooked during an official visit.
“Once you start dispensing with protocol you’re on a slippery slope and no one knows what the structures are,” he said. “We have 800 years of history here and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let local government be bypassed by anyone. There have been a number of incidents where people have been brought in from outside the town for events. I would like to see the position of cathaoirleach respected as a matter of course.”
As the current cathaoirleach of the NRMD, Cllr Bridín Murphy opted not to mince her words when commenting on the Ceann Comhairle’s invitation to Mr Mahraoui.
“There certainly has been a level of disrespect over the past number of months towards the position of cathaoirleach,” she said. “I have no doubt this is personal, but I would hope that, as this is my last meeting as chair, that this won’t continue. This is the hub, this is where we make decisions which affect the town, and in my mind this is not acceptable.
"There are national politicians making decisions outside of the chamber who will then turn very quickly to us looking for our support. The public have asked me why I wasn’t at events, why the chains of office weren’t present, and I have been straight and honest and said ‘we were not invited’. People in those positions should know better, they should know the cathaoirleach is always invited. That has always been protocol and it’s been very disappointing to see it dissolved over the past 12 months.”
Returning to the conversation, Cllr Sheehan said that the cathaoirleach was historically considered the “first citizen” of the district and that the only person with a higher standing was the president. Cllr Dwyer expanded upon this theme saying that, in the past, any “deliberate attempt to ignore the role of first citizen, was frowned upon, and quite rightly so”.

New Ross Parkrun members celebrated a decade of its success recently, with some taking part on the day fondly remembering the first event back in 2015.
The popular running and walking event that takes place in JFK Park and Arboretum every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. continues to increase in members, welcoming people of all ages and fitness levels, and some furry friends too.
Kicking off the birthday celebrations, Run Director, Catherine Ronan opened the event, just as she has continued to do since the inaugural event ten years ago.
The volunteer-led organisation not only welcomes locals, but also has an open-door policy for anyone wishing to take part who may be involved with other Parkrun groups, in both Ireland and the UK. The participants were treated to cake and refreshments which awaited them at the finish line on this occasion, with credit due to all volunteers who were busy on Friday night preparing for the birthday.
Under the guidelines of Parkrun Ireland, the fantastic core group of volunteers hosted the 428th Parkrun in New Ross, which attracted 20 first timers on the day.
John McGrath was successful in keeping up appearances as he crossed the finish line as the First Male, which he also pioneered in the first event ten years ago. Meanwhile, Emma Hannon crossed the line last Saturday as First Female.
“The core group is the heart of the event,” said Dale Kirwan, Parkrun ambassador, who marked his 200th Parkrun in recent weeks.
“Families have so much going on during the week, yet they continue to deliver and commit to hosting the event each Saturday,” he said.
“We welcome everyone to volunteer and participate in some way, it doesn’t have to be running. We would like to thank everyone for the last 10 years and for helping to make the event the success that it is. We are looking forward to the next 10,” he concluded.
