To kick off his “A Closer Look” segment on Wednesday night, the NBC host first compared the closing messages from both Trump and former president Obama, as the men have been campaigning for their parties nationwide. Where Obama encouraged remembering values, Trump took time out of multiple rallies to praise the rear ends of Nicki Minaj and Jon Husted.
“Now that Trump is in such a complimentary mood, maybe he’ll change his mind on Paxton,” Meyers suggested. “After all, he was right next to Paxton in Texas when he made his glowing comments about Husted. Maybe he’ll do Paxton a solid and throw him in there just to make him feel good.”
The late night host threw out the option because, at most campaign stops for Paxton, Trump has roasted how the man speaks and dresses. And, on Tuesday, the president stayed true to form.

A video published Monday by The Wall Street Journal appears to show Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on a balcony in Dubai shortly after midnight on Jan. 1, 2025, alongside several people, including at least one man named in a federal indictment alleging a multimillion-dollar hospital fraud scheme.
Paxton is Texas’ Republican candidate running for U.S. Senate.
The Journal identified one of the men as Sameer Suhail. The video also reportedly shows Anosh Ahmed, according to WSJ Reporter Elizabeth Findell.
According to a federal indictment, Anosh Ahmed, Sameer Suhail and Heather Bergdahl, defrauded a Chicago hospital and were later named in a 41-count indictment in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
The indictment alleges the three participated in a scheme to defraud an unnamed Illinois hospital of more than $15 million through false vendor payments. The Chicago Tribune has identified the hospital as Loretto Hospital in Chicago.
Ahmed and Suhail made their first court appearance Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, and pleaded not guilty to charges including wire fraud, embezzlement and money laundering, according to The Chicago Tribune.
Campaign finance records published by Transparency USA show Ahmed donated $40,000 to Paxton’s campaign in 2022 and an additional $125,000 from 2023 onward. The records show a $25,000 donation on July 15, 2024, three days after the Justice Department says the defendants were indicted.
Paxton’s campaign for U.S. Senate did not respond to requests from KSAT for comment made by phone, email and text. KSAT also reached out to the Office of the Attorney General for a comment and have not heard back.
Paxton’s opponent, State Rep. James Talarico, released the following statement in response to the video: “A party with multiple fugitives and Ken Paxton is still the sketchiest guy in the room.”

Texas Attorney General and Senate candidate Ken Paxton spent New Year’s Eve 2024 partying in Dubai with his mistress and two U.S. fugitives indicted on health care fraud charges.
In a video obtained by The Wall Street Journal, Paxton can be seen surveying the fireworks over the Dubai skyline next to his girlfriend Tracy Duhon. Indicted fugitives Sameer Suhail and Anosh Ahmed, who donated to Paxton’s campaign, were also present. Suhail and Ahmed were federally indicted in 2024 on charges of embezzling $15 million from the Illinois hospital where Ahmed was chief financial officer. Ahmed was later charged with another even grander scheme in which he allegedly sold $195 million worth of faulty Covid-19 tests to the government.
Ahmed donated $190,000 to Paxton’s campaign, including $25,000 just a few days after his indictment. Both men spent significant time outside of the U.S. after their indictments, making time to link with Paxton in Dubai before Ahmed went to Serbia, where he was arrested. Suhail was arrested at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Both are back in U.S. custody now.
“Every time you think Ken Paxton couldn’t get worse, he finds a way to prove you wrong,” the Democratic Senate Majority PAC wrote on X. “Turns out, Paxton partied in Dubai with two fugitives from U.S. justice and a woman who wasn’t his wife.”
So why did the Texas attorney general spend New Year’s Eve in Dubai with his mistress and two indicted men, one of whom donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to his election efforts? His campaign didn’t have a solid answer.
“Like President Trump, Ken Paxton has been politically persecuted for years, and every time, voters have seen through it and sent him back to office because they know he has always fought for Texas,” the Paxton campaign told WSJ.
This is just the latest development in one of the most scandal-ridden Senate campaigns in recent history. It has since been hailed as an iconic cult classic after being overshadowed by The Lost Boys (also a flashy vampire movie) during its initial release. Now, it's finally getting its flowers, being heralded as one of the most influential vampire films ever made.
The movie works on so many levels because Bigelow stripped away traditional Gothic tropes. There are no capes, castles, crucifixes, garlic, or holy water, and the word "vampire" is actually never even uttered in the movie. Instead, the characters are portrayed as unwashed, blue-collar outlaws and highway vagabonds roaming the dusty highways of Oklahoma.
While there are obviously many reasons to honor Near Dark and appreciate it, the late Bill Paxton also gave a standout performance as the feral, leather-jacket-clad vampire Severen. His unhinged performance, particularly during the infamous barroom slaughter scene, remains one of the most celebrated moments in 1980s horror cinema — no small feat in a year that also delivered Evil Dead II, The Lost Boys, and Hellraiser.
Few details about the series have been revealed so far, including who might star in it, who will lead the creative team, or where it could eventually land.
