The world of a cappella comes center stage March 25 at the Historic Elsinore Theatre when Varsity Vocals presents the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella Northwest Semifinal.
Four quarter-finals feed this competition, said ICCA Northwest and Southwest Producer Lucy Jackson. “It’s all about bringing together a love of arts and the magic of human singing.”
Jackson said A cappella has grown massively thanks to TV shows like “Glee” and movies like “Pitch Perfect,” which is based off a book about the ICCA competition.
The first and second-place winners from each quarter-final in Oregon, Northern California, Utah and Washington are given 12 minutes to perform.
Each group has its own unique perspective, Jackson said. “They are smashing so much into 12 minutes trying to showcase their style, taste, soloists.”
The competitors include:
Mind the Gap: This University of Oregon co-ed a cappella group has participated in the ICCA Semifinals twice. The group took third last year in Deke Sharon's VoiceJam and first at last year's Seaside A Cappella Festival, as well as the Bend A Cappella Festival.
Outspoken: Oregon State University’s all-male group placed second at the quarterfinals in Oregon and second at last year’s ICCA Northwest Semifinal. The group is currently working on its fifth album.
VoiceLine: This all-male group from Utah Valley University is competing at ICCA for the first year. The nine-member group, which placed first at the quarterfinals in Utah, made it to the second round of the 10th season of "America’s Got Talent.”
Infrared: The 11-member mixed a cappella group from the University of Utah placed second at the quarterfinals in Utah.
Furmata A Cappella: A mixed a cappella group from the University of Washington that placed first in the quarterfinals in Washington.
Underground Sound A Cappella: This University of Puget Sound mixed a capella group placed second at the quarterfinals in Washington. Although it is the group's first time making it to the semifinal round, this group has been performing since 1997. The group has been featured on Acaville Radio.
The Liquid Hotplates: This mixed a cappella group from the University of California – Davis took first place at the quarterfinals in San Francisco. It’s the group’s first time making it to the semifinal round.
Stanford Mendicants: A 22-member Stanford University male a cappella group that placed second at the quarterfinal in San Francisco. This is its first time going to the semifinal round.
“Our shows are lively, fun and engaging. It’s a really fun family show,” Jackson said. “It’s not your typical music event.”
Elsinore Theater Executive Director Tom Fohn, who would eventually like to see a high school a cappella competition on the theater’s stage, is excited about hosting the ICCA competition.
“I love the rawness — the fact that the performers can’t hide instruments or processed sound — it’s natural, and it’s on them,” he said.
“Considering the acoustic excellence we have here — a theater designed for vaudeville — I can think of no better place to hold this contest,” Fohn said.
The top-placing group at this event will advance to The International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella Finals and perform April 22 at The Beacon Theatre in New York City.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — Fighter jets, air transports and aerobatics teams will be returning to March Air Reserve Base following a five-year hiatus for the "Southern California Air Show," it was announced Thursday.
The two-day event is scheduled for the weekend of April 22-23 on the airfield, located just east of Interstate 215, at Ellsworth Street and Cactus Avenue.
The Southern California Air Show is the de facto replacement of the March ARB Air Fest, which was nixed in both 2020 and 2022. The first cancellation stemmed directly from the base's coronavirus public health lockdown, and the 2022 show was dropped after base administrators expressed concerns about potential ongoing exposure risks among large crowds.
The last public airborne event at the base was the 2018 March ARB Air Fest in April of that year.
The marquee event of the Southern California Air Show will be the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, performing a variety of coordinated maneuvers in their F-16 Fighting Falcons.
The Patriots Jet Team, flying L-39 single-seat trainers, will also perform both days, along with the U.S. Navy's F/A-18 Super Hornet West Coast Demo Team.
The Air Force's C-17 Globemaster West Coast Demo Team will also go aloft that weekend, taking the mammoth transports through paces over Moreno Valley and Riverside. C-17s are part of March's staple air contingent, regularly seen in the skies within the base's defined airspace.
"Additional performances will be provided by the Canadian SkyHawks Parachute Team and the A-10 Thunderbolt Demo Team, among others," according to a base statement. "A free concert is planned after the show ends near show center, from the back of a C-17."
Numerous aircraft static displays will be part of the program, featuring an F-35 Lightning, an F-22 Raptor, a supersonic B-1B Lancer bomber, a C-5 Galaxy, a C-130 Hercules, as well as a host of others, both military and civilian.

Two men with ties to a Utah polygamous sect, and who own a casino in Lake Elsinore, Calif., should receive more time to apply for gambling licenses or sell to a cousin, an administrative law judge says.
It’s the latest move in a two decade saga over the legal standing of the small casino attached to a motel. The “proposed decision” was more favorable than not to the Lake Elsinore Casino, which also has operated as the Sahara Dunes Casino.
While Administrative Law Judge Theresa M. Brehl said the casino and its owners should not yet be awarded a permanent gambling license, she criticized California’s regulators for delays and not explaining to the owners everything they needed to apply for licenses.
One of the casino’s owners, Ted E. Kingston, should be allowed to resubmit his management firm’s application, Brehl said, while Kingston’s co-owner and second-cousin, Joseph O. Kingston, should not have to apply for a gambling license at all.

Instead, Joseph Kingston should be allowed to transfer his stake to one of his cousins, Chad Benson, who then should apply for a gambling license, Brehl said.
Documents show how Benson and both Kingstons have ties to the Utah-based Davis County Cooperative Society, also known as the Latter-Day Church of Christ or the Kingston Group. Neither the applicants’ religion nor polygamy is discussed in Brehl’s proposed decision, dated June 7 and made public last week.
However, the 70-page document further describes the ties the casino, which sits between Los Angeles and San Diego, has to Utah.
Joseph Kingston is described as residing in Utah, and a Salt Lake City accountant and a West Jordan physician, both with their own ties to the Kingston Group, submitted affidavits in the licensing case. The accountant completed a valuation of the casino. The physician described Joseph Kingston’s medical conditions.
Joseph Kingston, 67, says he wants to transfer his half of the casino because he is suffering from diabetes and other ailments, according to Brehl’s proposed decision, which also says Joseph Kingston’s wife has suffered from breast cancer. Benson has worked as the casino’s chief operating officer since 2015.
“I asked for nothing in compensation as I do not believe my shares have much value,” Joseph Kingston wrote in a 2016 letter quoted in Brehl’s proposed decision, “and it is more important for me to do away with this large amount of financial obligation and allow me to free up my portfolio for my family."
California requires casinos, their owners and important officers to be licensed. Because of his declining health and desire to sell, Joseph Kingston has not submitted the necessary paperwork, and that was a major reason California’s gambling regulators sought to deny Lake Elsinore Casino a license, which could have forced the betting spot to close. Regulators also said Ted Kingston’s application was incomplete.
The case has dragged on since 1999, when the casino was issued its first provisional license. It has been renewed annually while regulators, in fits and stops described in Brehl’s writings, sought more information about Ted and Joseph Kingston.
There was confusion in 2016 over what paperwork had to be submitted and even about the legal name of the casino, Brehl wrote. Regulators also contended that Joseph Kingston couldn’t sell his shares in the casino if he wasn’t licensed to own one, but Brehl said that requirement was not in the law.

Joseph Kingston is a full brother to Paul E. Kingston, leader of the Kingston Group. By not having to apply for a gambling license, Joseph Kingston will avoid having to disclose his finances, his business dealings or the names of his children, other people with whom he lives and his siblings.
The California Gambling Control Commission can reject Brehl’s proposed decision, and issue its own ruling. Either way, Lake Elsinore Casino can appeal. If the commission accept the recommendations by mid-September, Brehl gave all sides deadlines that would extend the case into 2020.
A California lawyer representing Lake Elsinore Casino and its owners did not return messages seeking comment Monday.
It’s unclear why Joseph Kingston believes his ownership stake has little value. While his casino lacks the glitz and floor space of a Las Vegas-resort, in recent years, Lake Elsinore Casino has undergone renovations that have included the addition of off-track horse wagering. The land and improvements alone are worth almost $4.5 million, according to the county assessor.
Kingston Group members often practice an old Mormon concept of a united order. In the Kingston Group version, a business will divert its income to the church, with the church then returning money the business needs to cover expenses.
Kurt Eggert, a professor at Chapman University School of Law, in Orange, Calif., and an expert on gambling law, said the administrative judge’s ruling paints California’s Bureau of Gambling Control as “inept and incompetent.” The bureau is the investigative arm of the state’s gaming regulators and was responsible for gathering the information required to grant or deny Lake Elsinore Casino a license.
“It’s much worse than just paperwork snafus,” Eggert said. “It’s just sitting on their hands.”
The delays appeared to have persuaded the judge that failing to provide information on the casino’s ownership was no big deal, Eggert added.
“The bureau’s job is to make sure bad people aren’t running casinos and here it took 20 years to enforce the requirement that the casino provide them information.”

Lake Elsinore Mayor Steve Manos last week told The Press-Enterprise in nearby Riverside that he was pleased with the ruling and that his city would miss the jobs and revenue the casino generates if it had to close.
“Nobody can control who they’re related to,” Manos told the newspaper. “All of those concerns (about the Kingston Group) don’t appear to have anything to do with the license.”

California’s gambling regulators are again asking for more information about the finances of two men operating a casino there, including who else with ties to a Utah polygamous group might have financial interests in the business.
The order made public Tuesday by the California Gambling Control Commission is a setback for the owners of Lake Elsinore Casino, which has been in a dispute with the commission for 20 years and been operating on a string of temporary gambling licenses. The casino is owned by Ted and Joseph Kingston, who have been described in public documents as second cousins.
They also have family and business ties to the Davis County Cooperative Society, also known in Utah as the Kingston Group, according to a review of public records. The group believes in polygamy — though not all members practice plural marriage — and in sharing assets, though neither of those issues nor the Kingston Group has been discussed in any of the Gambling Control Commission’s public filings.
In a July 26 letter to The Salt Lake Tribune, Ted Kingston’s attorney wrote that his client “is not, and has never been, involved in polygamy.”
The dispute with the Gambling Control Commission has been whether Ted and Joseph Kingston should have to supply more information about their finances and the ownership history of the casino. The latest order sends the case back to an administrative law judge for a new hearing, probably sometime next year.
The order asks an administrative judge to consider several issues, including whether the owners supplied required information, used inappropriate accounting methods and employed a felon in a key position. The commission also wants to know more about the casino’s ownership history.
According to an account published in previous documents, cousins Joseph and Clyde Elden Kingston, along with Clyde’s son Ted and Joseph’s daughter Michelle Kingston-Knighton began the process of purchasing what was Sahara Dunes Casino in 1991. Gaming regulators approved the sale in 1993.
Clyde Kingston died in 2005. The order released Tuesday says an administrative judge should seek more evidence about how the casino shares owned by Clyde Kingston and his widow passed to Ted Kingston.
The Gambling Control Commission also wants to know who else might have a financial interest in the casino, including “any others such as family members, spouses, or affiliates in this jurisdiction or in other jurisdictions?”
An administrative law judge in July criticized California’s regulators for delays and not explaining to the owners everything they needed to apply for licenses. The judge also said Ted Kingston should be allowed to resubmit his management firm’s application while Joseph Kingston should not have to apply for a gambling license at all because he plans to sell his shares to another relative, Chad Benson.
A 2007 probate filing in Utah says Benson and Ted Kingston are sons of Clyde Kingston.
The Gambling Control Commission’s new order rejects those recommendations from the administrative judge.
Neither the casino’s current owners, Benson, nor an attorney representing them returned messages seeking comment for this story.

A California casino owned by members of a Mormon fundamentalist sect has been operating under a provisional license for the last two decades, despite a regulator’s recommendation it be denied full licensing back in 2008, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
Lake Elsinore Casino, an underwhelming low-rise card club in the city of Lake Elsinore, Southern California, is owned by members of the secretive Kingston Clan of Utah. Also known as the Latter Day Church of Christ, the group practices polygamy and intra-family marriage to promote a “pure” Kingston bloodline, believing founding fathers, brothers Elden and Ortell Kingston, to be direct descendants of Christ.
The casino’s continued operation, despite its lack of regular license and apparent refusal to cooperate with background checks, points to a complete regulatory breakdown.
California has two regulatory branches, the (investigative) Bureau of Gambling Control (CBGC) and the (decision-making) Gambling Control Commission (CGCC).
In 2008, the CBGC recommended the casino should not be granted regular licensing because one of its owners, Joseph Kingston — a full brother to clan leader Paul Kingston — had not provided the required information.
Meanwhile, the casino had neglected to keep adequate records, employed “inappropriate accounting methods,” failed to notify regulators of changes in ownership, and “continued employment of a key employee with a felony conviction,” the CBGC said.
But exactly why the CGCC — the licensing authority in California — has not been able to rule on the matter itself — and why it opted to renew the casino’s temporary license year after year for two decades — is unclear. The CGCC refused to comment on the matter when it was contacted by SLT this week.
In 2016, the casino applied to the California Horse Racing Board for the right to offer off-track betting. Its request was granted, despite the fact that the CBGC investigation was already underway.
Sometimes known simply as “The Order,” the Kingstons operate one of the biggest and richest family-run business empires in Utah, worth hundreds of millions, with interests in coalmining, restaurant supply, and weapons retail.
Its secrecy is probably due to the fact that it maintains the illegal practice of polygamy, in keeping with the original beliefs and teachings of Joseph Smith.
In 2003, Mary Anne Kingston sued over 200 family members and around 100 of their business interests after being forced into a polygamous marriage at the age of 16 to her uncle, David Ortell Kingston. When she tried to escape, she was whipped with a belt by her father, John Daniel Kingston. She counted 28 lashes before losing consciousness. Both men received prison sentences.
