Intermountain Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield, UT recently received a five-star rating for being a breastfeeding friendly facility from the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) by completing all ten steps of the Stepping Up for Utah Babies program.
The state health program recognizes Utah hospitals that have taken steps to promote, protect, educate, and encourage breastfeeding in their facilities. Earning a five-star rating typically takes years. All Intermountain hospitals with labor and delivery units are working toward this, and 16 Intermountain hospitals have earned the five-star rating to date.
“Our mom and baby caregivers have been working hard to earn this breastfeeding friendly rating. This signifies our caregivers are both competent and comfortable providing evidence-based education and resources to help families be successful in feeding their infants,” said Kenzie Peterson, RN, MSN, C-EFM, women and newborn nurse manager at Sevier Valley Hospital, who led the efforts to earn the designation.
“Our experience has taught us, when moms and newborns engage in early skin-to-skin contact during the “golden” first hour after birth, it greatly increases a mother’s success with breastfeeding,” she added.
The ten steps of the Stepping Up for Utah Babies program are evidence-based maternity care practices that demonstrate optimal support of breastfeeding, as well as improved care experiences and outcomes for non-breastfeeding moms and families.
They include hospital practices such as: encouraging moms to hold their new baby skin-to-skin right after delivery; allowing moms and babies to remain together 24 hours a day in the hospital; training staff to support all new moms’ feeding choices; encouraging breastfeeding on demand; reducing formula supplementation unless medically indicated; and not using pacifiers for breastfeeding infants.
“I’m so proud of our amazing team of nurses for earning this recognition. They are truly dedicated to helping new moms and mothers with previous breastfeeding struggles, by providing education and helping them build the confidence they need to be successful,” Peterson added.
The state health program website cites research that shows breast milk is the best food for infants and that breastfeeding is associated with decreased risk for infant morbidity and mortality. It’s also been shown that breastfeeding moms have lower incidences of breast and ovarian cancer, Type 2 diabetes and postpartum depression.
The state program is patterned after the international Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative started by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund in the 1990s.

“He had two or three different pitches working,” Meyers said, “so it was a good day for him.”
The Panthers (15-7, 6-4 Big 6) scored three runs in the third and sixth innings in the win. Braedon King and Landon Skiles each had two RBIs and Brody Meyers knocked in another run as UT out-hit Geneseo 9-4. Meyers and Skiles each led the team with two hits in the opener.
Bryce Sanders pitched all six innings for the Leafs (14-6, 5-5) in the loss as he struck out four and walked four.
Geneseo bounced back in Game 2 thanks to a five-run fourth inning against Brody Meyers, the UT starter. Meyers went four innings and allowed five earned runs on five hits, striking out six and walking three before Malmstrom entered in relief. Malmstrom struck out two without a walk, allowing one unearned run in the last three innings.
Each team had nine hits in the game, but the Leafs were able to send all nine batters to the plate in the crooked inning to take control after UT led 2-1 after three innings.
Sevier thought the team was a bit flat in the second game after taking the opener.
“We’ve been pretty solid lately, playing good baseball,” Sevier said. “I think we just get tired and shut down as a whole. But we’ve still got a lot of baseball to play.”
Skiles had to leave the game after an infield collision with a teammate. The shortstop had been playing good defense, making a diving dig and throw for an out at one point.
“Have a big player get hurt, watch your teammates go down, that sucks,” Sevier said. “Just kind of put us down."
Coach Meyers said the damage had been done before Skiles went down.
“Brody (Meyers) wasn’t as sharp in Game 2 so he got deep in counts and they put some runs on him,” he said. “They’re a good hitting team over there. Just a matter of him making the pitches. I don’t think his off-speed pitches were great.”
UT was not able to get the big hits in the loss. That was not the case for Geneseo, which also took advantage of three UT errors.
Blake Welge cranked a three-run home run to cap off the big fourth inning for Geneseo. Kale Whitaker went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Drew Nelson also knocked in a run.
UT would not score again until a Kellen Kennedy RBI double in the sixth inning, but Geneseo got the run back in the next inning with a Whitaker sacrifice fly.
Kolten Schmoll finished the complete game win by retiring the Panthers in order in the final frame. He finished with four strikeouts and no walks while allowing two earned runs in the win.
Dominic Stottler led UT with two hits in the loss as Malmstrom, Brody Meyers, and Kennedy had RBIs.
The sky was clear on Saturday afternoon, but gusting winds made for some tough plays and shaky defense on fly balls. It also played a factor in Skiles getting injured in the collision.
“Tough for guys to figure out who’s going to get the ball and unfortunately our guys collided there just past the mound,” Meyers said.
UT is middle of the pack in the conference, and Coach Meyers hopes the team can step up for its last two Big 6 doubleheaders against Rock Island and at Quincy.
“We’re going to lock in, we’re going to be ready to go and try to get some sweeps here to finish out the season,” he said, “and hopefully be a No. 2 seed (for the postseason).”

SEVIER COUNTY, Utah — It can be seen from the interstate when driving through central Utah: A 600+ acre solar farm generating 80 megawatts of power back on the grid. It's just the latest in some two dozen to become operational here in Utah — the 11th-top state in the nation for solar production — as the federal government creates incentives to develop alternative energy.
Sevier County Economic Development Director Malcolm Nash said developers approached county leaders for the project.
"They said, 'Can you help us locate ground that’s single-owner? About 6-800 acres.' And we said, 'Well, there’s this one spot,'" Nash recalled.
He pointed them to a location just west of the town of Sigurd — out of the way, but right next to a major substation.
"The issue for a solar generating plant, or any power plant for that matter, is just access to the grid," Nash said.
Nash said initially, Sevior County commissioners were not in favor of the project but then changed their mind.
"It’s like any project. It has its pros it has its cons. For us, the pros outweighed the cons, so we went ahead and participated," he said.
Sevier County was able to negotiate with developers of this facility, and in return for some federal incentives offered, they got something back.
"We were able to get some money, some revenues, to help build student housing on the campus of Snow College," Nash said. "That’s one reason why we like the project here is because it opened that revenue stream."
"To Sevier County’s testament, they did a very good job of leveraging that investment to the long-term benefit of the community," said Stuart Clason, the regional growth director with the group Utah Association of Counties.
Clason says the group advises local leaders negotiating with developers on how to best utilize the influx of capital coming into areas that could really use it.
"They want to capture as much of that new tax revenue locally," he added.
There are projects now operational or in the works in Emery, Carbon, Beaver, Millard, Juab, Tooele, Box Elder, Rich, Iron and Washington counties.
"We need to have our eyes wide open and understand what these investments mean," Clason said.
Millions are spent on the project, usually by large corporations, and in the location in Sigurd, it is now owned by New York City-based hedge fund D.E. Shaw, who allowed FOX 13 on the property to get a closer look.
Meanwhile in Iron county, the Cedar City and Iron County economic development director Danny Stewart says they've known for a long time that they have a great solar resource. Iron County hosts the first utility-scale solar farm to go operational: the Utah Red Hills project that went online with its 340,000 photovoltaic panels in December 2015.
"It opened the floodgates for other solar development within the county," Stewart said.
The high altitude, cooler temperatures, available sunshine and affordable land made this region a prime location for this type of technology. They now have 13 projects that are operational and 17 power plants of various sizes. That's 6,000 acres of solar panels in Iron County with three new projects to be built by the first of next year. Stewart says they're expecting to deliver over 1,000 megawatts of power to the Rocky Mountain power grid.
"All the projects that are currently in production here in Utah are the photovoltaic power. They’re absorbing sunshine that’s already coming down. We don’t have any of the reflective power projects. I know that there’s been concern and fear about those, bird migration and different things. But this is a really safe, really clean energy," Stewart said.
But he says as far as providing jobs to these rural areas, they don't deliver.
"Rural economic development is interesting. We want jobs. We really need jobs in the rural areas of the state. And when we started looking at solar, we really started to evaluate: These aren’t huge job creators," he said. "I mean, they are for 12-18 months — a flurry of activity during the construction, but after that, it’s very minimal. Then you start looking at the other plusses. The ability to use the resource, the ability to generate some revenue that wouldn’t happen otherwise and utilize some property that is underutilized if at all. We found that for Iron County, it really meets a lot of our economic development needs here."
Nash said there were some philosophical issues with moving forward on a solar farm project in a county that hosts the largest coal mine in the state.
"On a number of levels, it makes sense. It helps with the country’s energy transition. It feels like the responsible thing to do," he said.
Thirty miles up Salina Canyon and just about a 40-minute drive from the solar farm in Sigurd, SUFCO is one of the longest continuously running and most productive underground longwall mines in the nation. It's also an economic engine and a major employer for this region — something Nash says this new project won't change.
"This one doesn’t look like it’ll be a threat. They’re going in across the country. We just as well participate," Nash added. "It’s just another feature on the landscape, if you will. You’ll drive by and take a look at it and say, 'That’s kind of neat.'"
He says the lifespan of these panels is about 25-30 years, with provisions in place for the developer to clean up the site and put the land back to its original condition if they do move on.
Nash, Clason and Stewart say the next challenge in the future of solar power in Utah is battery technology and energy storage.

Rooster Ride: We have teamed up with Jorgensen’s in Richfield for the “Rooster Ride”. This ride will be tough to beat with our clean air and beautiful scenery with almost zero traffic. The ride will take you around the Sevier Valley from little town to little town. Where the locals will be there to take care of you in one of the six aid stations. Test yourself with a Century ride or metric century that offers over 4,000 feet of climbing in one of the most scenic canyons in all of Utah. While out riding you can stop at the aid station at the Fremont Indian State Park and take a quick photo of some the Fremont Indian rock art. This event will become one of the premier cycling events in south central Utah.

RR: Located in scenic Sevier Valley, Richfield is one Utah’s best-kept secrets. Why do we call it the “Rooster Ride?”: Way back in the day, Sevier Valley was one of the premier pheasant hunting areas of Utah. You can hunt for your own epic riding experience by “Riding the Rooster”. Sevier County is also known as “Utah’s Trail County”, with over 2,000 miles of the best off-road adventures on the world-famous Paiute ATV/UTV trail system.

Peak Minerals Inc. has entered into a convertible loan agreement with a global strategic investor to invest $30 million to continue development of the Company’s Sevier Playa Sulfate of Potash (SOP) Project in west-central Utah.
The proceeds of the financing will be used to fund front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the Sevier Playa Project (the final technical work ahead of construction), complete final permitting activities, prepare the site in advance of construction, refinance the Company’s existing senior debt obligations, and for general corporate purposes.
As part of the Loan agreement, Peak Minerals and its investor have also entered into a binding term sheet for the long-term supply of 65,000 tons per year of SOP from Phase 1 of the Project, which is targeting total SOP production of 215,000 tons annually.
"We are pleased to announce the completion of this financing, and to have attracted a high caliber investor to the Company. As we move the Sevier Playa Project towards construction and operation, this investment marks an important milestone for the company," said Dean Pekeski, CEO of Peak Minerals. "These funds will provide us with the necessary capital and financial flexibility to grow our internal technical team, complete FEED, initial site works and contract negotiation and arrangement of project finance as we advance towards a construction decision."
The comany is developing the Sevier Playa Project in Millard County, UT, the most significant SOP development effort on the continent.
