Washington, Utah—The Salvation Army Outpost has improved countless lives in the St. George area in the recent seven years. It was a member of the local community and his family, the Bush’s, who recognized the local need for this non-profit organization to serve anyone in need. Since then, the Salvation Army has assisted families with food, emergency supplies, and financial assistance. It has also been a place for the community to gather for worship service.
The Salvation Army Mission Statement includes “ministry motivated by the love of God… to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.” The St. George Outpost’s creed is to serve God, sustain families, and transform lives. The community has greatly benefited from having them here.
The Salvation Army was previously located in the former Kmart shopping center on Bluff Street. Due to the upcoming remodeling planned for the shopping center, the Salvation Army had to quickly relocate.
NAI Excel was able to assist the Salvation Army with their relocation. The administrators Major Bob and Karen Schmig worked with NAI Excel and its agent Eric Hatch to find a convenient and excellent new location at 568 W Telegraph Rd Suite 4, Washington, UT 84780 near In-N-Out Burger. NAI Excel agents Meeja McAllister and Jason Griffith had been working with the property owner who had the right space available. There is more space at their new location, allowing room for growth. With this new location, the community can look forward to many more years with the Salvation Army as a vital part of Southern Utah.
The Salvation Army will open its doors for Food Pantry and other social services on September 11, 2023. Hours of operation are Mondays 1-5pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-3pm and Wednesdays 12-5pm. The Grand Opening and open house is planned for 11am on October 2nd, 2023.
The community is encouraged to visit the new spacious building, sign up to volunteer, and let neighbors and friends know about the services they provide to our community. Val Slater, a member of the Salvation Army board wrote, “with this new building we will be able to continue all the programs we have been doing to help the needs of the community and with more space we have now, we will be able to develop more programs that we can reach even more people. We are excited and are feeling blessed with our new space and the people that have made it possible.”

Brian Niedermeyer spent a year brazenly violating NCAA rules while courting one of the prized recruits of the 2020 class, only to watch the prospect commit to Georgia.
The former Tennessee football assistant coach's recruitment of Darnell Washington, a four-star tight end in the 2020 cycle, included a cash delivery in a parking lot and accompanying Washington's family on a flight for his official visit to Knoxville.
Washington, who was drafted in April by the Pittsburgh Steelers, is not directly named in the NCAA findings. Knox News uncovered his identity through NCAA investigative documents that referred to him as "prospective student-athlete 9" and "prospect 4," online sites that track college visits of prospective recruits, and a source with direct knowledge of the situation. The source spoke to Knox News about the recruitment on condition of anonymity.
NCAA findings, which Niedermeyer corroborated while negotiating a five-year show-cause order in February, showed the Vols' recruitment was shady before Washington committed and enrolled at Georgia in January 2020.
Washington was the No. 34 prospect in the nation and the top-ranked tight end in the 247Sports Composite as a Las Vegas prep product. Niedermeyer, UT's tight ends coach and vaunted recruiter at the time, went all-in on Washington.
Tennessee offered the 6-foot-7, 260-pound Washington a scholarship in June 2018 after his sophomore season. Niedermeyer broke NCAA rules in January 2019 on a visit to Desert Pines High School in Washington's junior year. The visit constituted impermissible contact when Niedermeyer and Washington "shot baskets together and had a recruiting conversation" after Washington's basketball practice.
The pair walked to the parking lot afterward and Niedermeyer gave Washington $750, the NCAA found and Niedermeyer confirmed in the February 2023 negotiations that resulted in the show-cause.
Washington took two visits to Tennessee between March 2019 and July 2019, both of which entailed NCAA violations because of impermissible benefits totaling approximately $1,713, according to the NCAA's findings. The facts relating to these visits were largely uncontested, the documents showed. The details of the visits were included among three other prospects' violation-filled visits.
Washington was accompanied by family members on both visits and his high school coach on one visit. UT provided impermissible benefits in the form of free lodging on one occasion, free meals on two occasions and UT apparel on two occasions.
Niedermeyer provided UT apparel to Washington and his mother, Katrina Graves, on a visit for a March 2019 spring scrimmage as the ex-Vols coach returned to the hotel to "give a final recruiting pitch." The apparel included a hooded sweatshirt and a beanie. Former UT recruiting director Bethany Gunn provided an impermissible meal on the March visit.
On a July visit, Niedermeyer was credited with planning the visit and being apprised of the impermissible visit activities. Gunn was alleged to have facilitated impermissible inducements.
An unnamed staff member also provided UT apparel on one of Washington's two visits.
Niedermeyer's final act in Washington's recruitment was perhaps the most outlandish, records show. He broke NCAA rules when he flew with Washington's family from Las Vegas to Knoxville in December 2019 for Washington's official visit.
Prior to the flight, Niedermeyer had "casual conversations" with Washington at the airport.
Tennessee got Washington's final official visit, but it didn't matter. Washington signed with Georgia over the Vols, Alabama and Florida. All four received official visits. Washington caught 45 passes for 774 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons at Georgia. He won back-to-back national titles before the Steelers drafted him in Round 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Niedermeyer was fired for cause in January 2021 as the Pruitt regime toppled due to the widespread rule-breaking.

For the next few days, No. 3 Texas football is preparing for the College Football Playoff Semifinal game at the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, LA, on Jan. 1 against the No. 2 Washington Huskies. Texas is making its first appearance ever in the College Football Playoff. And the Longhorns are looking for its first National Championship since beating the No. 1 USC Trojans in the 2006 Rose Bowl Game.
This is Washington's second appearance in the College Football Playoff. The Huskies also appeared in the CFP under former head coach Chris Petersen during the 2016 season. Washington was convincingly defeated by double digits by the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2016-17 CFP Semifinal game at the Peach Bowl.
Texas-Washington is an interesting matchup as it pits the nation's top passing offense against one of the deepest and most talented teams in the nation. If the Longhorns play up to their potential, they should come away with a win over the Huskies. But this Playoff field has four teams that could each conceivably win the title, which is a pretty new concept for the postseason.
Here's a look at four reasons why the Longhorns could dominate the Huskies in the CFP Semifinal at the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.
Texas's offensive line has been among the most effective and consistent units in the Power Five this season, especially in pass protection. Offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood and the Longhorns have started the same unit of five along the O-Line in double-digit games this season.
And the Longhorns rank second in the Power Five in pass blocking efficiency this season, only behind the Oregon Ducks.
Texas looks to have a pretty advantageous matchup up front between its offensive line vs. Washington's front four. Washington plays a similar style along the defensive front compared to Texas, at least regarding personnel alignment. The Huskies play that 2-4-5 defensive scheme that Pete Kwiatkowski employs at Texas.
PK also utilized that 2-4-5 defensive scheme during his time as the co-defensive coordinator at Washington, before taking his current role at Texas a few years ago.
Washington has a decent group up front regarding production and efficiency. Starting redshirt senior defensive tackle, Tuli Letuligasenoa leads all PAC-12 interior defensive linemen in defensive grade this season. But he's been limited by injury issues, missing a handful of games for the Huskies down the stretch during the regular season. He should be good to go for the conference title game, though.
While Letuligasenoa has been very effective up front for Washington's D-Line when healthy, he's mostly faced smaller and less athletic interior offensive lines this season, at least compared to what Texas brings in the trenches. Letuligasenoa stands at 6-foot-1 and 290-pounds, which is at least 25 pounds lighter than every starter Texas has along the interior offensive line.
Redshirt senior starting nose tackle Ulumoo Ale is Washington's other starting interior defensive linemen this season. Ale is a bigger and more physical linemen, at 6-foot-6 and 330-pounds, when compared to Letuligasenoa. But Ale hasn't been as effective as an interior pass rusher or run stopper up front for the Huskies as his co-starter in the middle this season.
Texas has faced tougher groups along the interior defensive line in the Big 12 this season than what Washington brings. They should be able to move bodies off the line of scrimmage in run blocking while also giving redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers ample time in the pocket to dice up Washington's secondary.

The winner of the UT-Washington game Monday will move on to the College Football Playoff title game at NRG Stadium in Houston.
NEW ORLEANS — The Texas Longhorns football team and their fans are in New Orleans, the site of one of the College Football Playoff semifinals -- the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Along the famous Canal Street, there are indicators all around that the Longhorns are here in the Crescent City, ready to take over. More than 500 miles from the 40 acres, the signs that the Horns have arrived in New Orleans are everywhere.
"Thoroughly excited," said one fan we spoke with. "You know, we were waiting a long time for this."
"UT's defense is pretty good," another UT fan said. "Washington's offense, they've been struggling, you know, three games in a row now."
"I think we're going to win," another said.

From the streets to inside Caesars Superdome where the Sugar Bowl will be played on Monday, the University of Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and the team are getting ready for the College Football Playoff semifinal.

One of UT's biggest strengths is the big men of the Texas defensive line, a unit that is ranked the No. 4 rushing defense in the nation.
"It is the type of game you dream for and we know that," Texas edge rusher Barryn Sorrell said. "We all know we're on one of the biggest stages out there and we're playing something. It's going down in the history books."
They're hoping when it's all said and done, the Big Easy will be burnt orange.

Applying to and choosing a college is a strenuous process: compounding the difficulty of finding “the one” — the university that feels like home — is the increasingly common practice of transferring.
In my last year of high school, established friend circles dissolved in favor of groups built around where we’d be heading for college. However, when UT’s acceptance letter came and I was offered admission through the Coordinated Admission Program, there wasn’t a place for me in the Forty Acres friend group.
After I accepted my CAP offer, I moved to UT-Tyler, a place that was unfamiliar and four hours from home. Since I didn’t know anyone, I found myself starting from scratch in the friendship department. Luckily, I was able to make friends and quickly found footing among the East Texas natives.
However, telling my new friends I was a CAP student often led to looks of surprise and comments like, “Oh, so you’re leaving?” and, “I don’t really hang out with CAP students,” foreshadowing an end to invitations and further communication.
Coupled with being ostracized by four-year UT-Tyler students, locating people that are also in CAP and going to UT-Austin is often based on chance. Students at the six universities participating in CAP can struggle to find friends and belonging, which can lead to isolation and self-doubt.
Bella Tapia, an international relations and global studies sophomore and former CAP student said meeting other CAP students was frustrating and challenging, and that the only other CAP students she met were from random conversations she struck up in the hallway before class.
Tapia’s experience isn’t uncommon among CAP students. Due to the lack of resources, CAP students have to be creative in establishing their own networks of communication before they go to UT-Austin.
Muskan Umatiya, a radio-television-film sophomore and former CAP student, said being added to a Snapchat group was her main lifeline to other CAP students.
“The Snapchat group was started by someone I didn’t know, but I’m grateful they started it because otherwise I wouldn’t have met nearly as many people as I did,” Umatiya said.
The lack of resources and mechanisms for communication between CAP students stems in large part from the fact that CAP students aren’t officially enrolled at UT-Austin. This means that UT-Austin does not currently sponsor any ways for CAP students to communicate with each other before they reach the Forty Acres.
“Each of the CAP institutions have policies that govern communications with (and among) their students,” said Mike Washington, UT associate director of admissions. “Any ‘official’ communication would need to be approved by the leadership at each of the institutions.”
However, Mike John Talamantes, the academic adviser for CAP students at UT-El Paso, said that UT-Austin would be in charge of this system.
“As UT CAP schools, we receive UT CAP agreements from the Admissions Office at UT-Austin,” Talamantes said. “We all follow their lead in UT CAP policies and procedures.”
Washington touched on this discrepancy in perceived responsibility by saying, “We have a role in administering the program, and (CAP schools) have a separate role in hosting the participants.”
But if UT-Austin is “administering” the program, surely they have flexibility over what comes up on CAP student’s MyStatus page and could include a “recommended” tab, with opportunities to communicate with fellow CAP students.
Washington acknowledged that “UT-Austin has an official communications portal (MyStatus) that informs CAP students of all official notifications from UT-Austin.” So why doesn’t UT-Austin recommend participation in an opt-in directory or even a Facebook group, which they have for incoming UT-Austin students?
The least UT-Austin and participating CAP schools can do is create a way for CAP students to connect with one another instead of making them start their first year of college alone and in an unfamiliar place, with only the promise of admission.
By helping CAP students come together and make the most of their time at participating CAP universities, they’ll have a higher chance of successfully joining the herd on the Forty Acres.
