HOBBLE CREEK CANYON, Utah (ABC4) — The Cherry Fire that started in Hobble Creek Canyon, east of Springville is currently estimated at 651 acres and is 0% contained.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, crews are focusing suppression efforts on the west flank of the fire to protect the community in the Left Hand Fork of Hobble Creek.
According to a latest update posted by Utah Fire Info, fire managers feel confident they’ll soon have some containment along the southern edge near South Fork Hobble Road.
The fire remained active into the night. Crews expect active fire activity on Friday. According to ABC4’s 4Warn Weather team, our first classic Fall storm has arrived welcoming cool, wet conditions to Northern and Central Utah to wrap the work week.
According to Mapleton City Fire Department, the wildfire started on Thursday afternoon as a vegetation fire in the Right Fork of Hobble Creek. Crews with Utah County Fire, Utah Forestry Fire & State Lands, the U.S. Forest Service, and multiple aircraft resources are responding to the fire.
The Northern Utah Type 3 Incident Management Team will take command of the fire today.
As of Thursday night, Right Fork Hobble Creek was evacuated from Jolley’s Ranch to Springville Crossing, as per Utah County Emergency Management. The evacuation is in place until Oct. 5, unless extended due to the fire behavior.
Everyone near the fire is under a ‘Ready’ status, which means they need to prepare incase of an evacuation.
The cause of the Cherry Fire is under investigation.
Resources assigned include hotshot crews, engines, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft conducting water and retardant drops.
The public has been asked to avoid the Right Hand Fork of Hobble Creek Canyon to allow firefighting personnel and equipment safe access.

SPRINGVILLE, Utah (KUTV) — The Cherry Fire has burned more than 650 acres east of Springville and Mapleton in Hobble Creek Canyon.
Officials stated that the blaze remained active throughout the night and into Friday morning. They anticipated increased activity due to predicted weather conditions, such as high winds, ahead of the weekend storm.
The fire remains 0% contained, but according to Utah Fire Info, fire managers feel confident that crews will achieve some containment along the southern edge of the fire near South Fork Hobble Road.
An evacuation notice was issued on Thursday after the fire ignited. By Friday morning, officials said the flames burned an estimated 70 acres — scaling back from the estimated 150 acres reported by the National Interagency Fire Center.
There are still many reasons to head outdoors this time of year, but just because it’s cool enough to wear a jacket doesn’t mean fires are a thing of the past.
The fire shows that fires can start and spread even in October.
“We had some acreage growth due to the erratic winds that preceded this storm front that has now given us a lot of relief over the fire perimeter,” said Courtney Davis with the U.S. Forest Service. "Sticking folks in these drainages and these steep slopes with the rain is not feasible."
The fire was human-caused, which means there’s still some danger people should look out for.
“Just because the fire danger is low, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist,” said Jon Smith with the North Tooele Fire District.
Smith said fall brings out hunters, campers, hikers, and more.
He wanted to remind people that although danger isn’t as high as it is in the middle of August, it’s still present.
“Riding their side-by-sides and ATVs, we want to make sure they’re still using their spark arrestors, not pouring gasoline out in the grass, not parking their vehicles in high grass, not dragging chains,” Smith said.
Smith said Utah gets one or two major events every year in October and even November.
Fire Prevention Week starts next week. Smith said they’re focusing on wildfire prevention, but also on lithium-ion batteries.
