The 'Sleeping Giant'
According to connecticuthistory.org, the 'Sleeping Giant' acquired its name thanks to Native Americans of the Quinnipiac Tribe, told of the story of the evil spirit Hobbomock, who, "angry at the neglect of his people, stamped a foot (at what is now Middletown) and changed the course of the Connecticut River to the east," As the story goes, a good spirit named Kietan casts a spell to put the giant to sleep ergo 'Sleeping Giant.'

Portals to a Centuries-Old-Garden?
These two multi-arched structures, The Arches, are weathered and backed by a dilapidated stone wall that scales the hillside where buildings and cottages once existed. In the late 1800s, this area inside Sleeping Giant became a quarry. It lasted until 1924 when the townspeople, tired of seeing their mountain desecrated, formed an organization to stop all mining.
