Home Care West Granby, CT

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Dewey-Granby Oak gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. “Dear Rick, Over the past three plus years, my father Joseph Ceuch has lived at home assisted by the caregivers from your company Always Best Care of Greater Bristol. This letter is a personal thank you from my father and the entire Ceuch family on how your caregivers treated and attended to my father during this time. The caregivers became part of our extended family who shared in countless family events resulting in beautiful lasting memories. Caregivers Frances Boateng, Jeremy Turner, and Yanice Hernandez were awesome in their care of my father. I want to especially acknowledge Francis as a person who went above and beyond his responsibility and became part of the Ceuch inner circle. It was not uncommon for Francis on his off days to stop by during a family picnic to say hello...he is truly loved by my father. Again, I want to thank you for the loving care your caregivers provided my father. I would highly recommend your company to anyone interested in having a caregiver attend to a loved one. Thanks again”

She was always cooking wonderful homemade meals and desserts and I was happy to see how happy she made Daryl. I think she is a wonderful asset to Always Best Care. “Our sister, Barbara has early-onset dementia , and was in sudden need of a personal care assistant until placement in a quality skilled nursing facility became available. We reached out to home health care agencies in her local area but, by this point, had already worked with several agencies for med reminders for Barbara (and 24/7 care for our Mom in another area of CT) and were a bit skeptical that that we’d find one that could provide consistent quality of care. When I spoke with Rick Downey of Always Best Care Senior Services in Bristol, he conveyed both confidence in his knowledge of health care and empathy in understanding the frustrations that families experience when seeking quality care for their loved ones. We were next contacted by their care coordinator,Heather Kozikowski, who came to our sister’s home to conduct an assessment and further explain the services offered by Always Best Care.A further testament to the exceptional quality of Always Best Care is the service and care we’ve received after Barbara is no longer a client; our thanks to Always Best Care for the excellent care of our sister, and the peace-of-mind it afforded our family knowing that she was in such kind and competent hands!”

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in West Granby, CT, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your CT's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in West Granby, CT understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care West Granby, CT

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers West Granby, CT

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • MeadowBrook of Granby
  • Barkhamsted-Granby Group Homes
  • Stony Hill Village
  • Salmon Brook Group Home
  • Granby Senior Center

Joining Industries – an advanced manufacturing enterprise with 30-year-old roots – recently paid $3 million for the East Granby building in which it is located.

“Our businesses are doing very well,” said David Hudson, CEO of Joining Industries. “They are growing. The building has a lot of value, and the seller was ready.”

Hudson said the purchase of the 45,110-square-foot building at 17 Connecticut South Drive gives his company greater ability to make improvements on its schedule.

JTI Realty LLC. -- created by Joining Industries – bought the 45,110-square-foot, metal-sided building from GSL Newgate One LLC, in a deal logged by the town on April 7.

The 1987-vintage building sits on 5.7 acres. It had once housed Advanced Vacuum Resources, a company headed by GSL Newgate One principal Gary James Lachapelle, of West Granby.

Hudson said the building had about seven tenants when Joining Technologies moved in 20 years ago. Jointing Technologies leased additional space as other tenants moved out over time. Today, the building hosts Joining Technologies and JT Automation LLC and their parent company, Joining Industries. A daycare also leases about 14% of the building.

Hudson said his company is happy to continue hosting the daycare.

Michael Francoeur, chairman of Joining Industries’ board of directors, launched the business in 1992, opening Cheshire-based Energy Beam Labs Inc., a provider of electron beam welding services. Over the following decade, the company expanded into laser welding and relocated to East Granby, changing its name to Joining Technologies.

Today, the company specializes in laser and electron-beam welding, making components for medical, aerospace, automotive, semiconductor and other industries.

Joining Technologies Automation LLC was formed in 2016 to build automated work cells for larger equipment manufacturers like Raytheon Technologies and Honeywell, allowing them to bring laser welding, laser cladding and other processes in-house, Hudson said.

Joining Technologies’ laser cladding department was spun off into American Cladding Technologies Inc. in 2017. Today, it operates out of about 26,000 square feet of leased space at 15 International Drive in East Granby. The company uses lasers to apply metal coatings to metal parts, making them more durable and corrosion resistant.

Joining Industries launched in 2017 to serve as a parent company binding Joining Technologies, Joining Technologies Automation and American Cladding Technologies.

Energy Beam Labs got its start in 1992 with six employees. Today, Joining Industries and its subsidiaries employ just over 100, and is growing.

“We will probably be looking for another building in the next couple of years,” Hudson said.

Practice's co-founder Dr. Collin Sanford retires, relocates

Avon Family Dentistry has said good-bye to a co-founder and hello to a new doctor. Long-time Avon resident Dr. Collin Sanford, who founded the practice with Dr. Sheldon Hausman in 1990 when they merged their individual practices, has retired and relocated with wife Mary to Chicago, home to one of their three sons.

“The move was primarily to be closer to grandchildren, otherwise I don't think I would have ever left our hometown,” Sanford said.

The practice, which includes Dr. A. Liam Doran of Avon and Dr. Eric Ruiz of West Simsbury, wasn’t without a fourth dentist for long. Dr. Griffin Udelson, who lives in West Granby with her pediatric dentist husband and adopted greyhound Charlie, joined the team in January.

Udelson received her dental degree from the University of Connecticut in 2014, receiving the Academy of Osseointegration Outstanding Student in Implant Dentistry Award as well as the Kohrman Award for Excellence in Complete Dentures. She previously graduated cum laude from the University of Miami in Coral Gables while competing as a Division I volleyball player.

Following dental school, Udelson pursued a General Practice Residency at Danbury Hospital to obtain advanced training in fields including endodontics, oral surgery, and prosthodontics.

“Griffin has well-rounded experience,” Avon resident Hausman said. “We felt she was prepared to meet our standards at Avon Family Dentistry.”

Udelson said she was working for another group when a colleague from UConn told her about the opening and set them up. “I asked around about the practice and heard they have a wonderful reputation,” she said. “We met and clicked.”

Her male colleagues agree having a female dentist is an advantage because some patients feel more comfortable with a woman.

“I interviewed Griffin for a residency and wanted to hire her,” Ruiz said. “That didn’t happen so I’m glad I finally get to work with her.”

Like Hausman and Sanford before him, Ruiz was on the faculty of the UConn School of Dental Medicine. Ruiz joined the practice in 2017 and Doran in 2004 after completion of his residency.

“Having four dentists, we can be available six days a week with early morning and evening appointments, and for families, we can get them all done at the same time,” Doran said.

“Some of our support staff have been with us more than 20 years, even before Collin and I merged,” Hausman said.

Asked what it’s like to be without his original partner, he said there are mixed feelings. “We’ve known each other since dental school, for over 40 years,” Hausman said. “I feel the absence.”

Sanford agrees that leaving the practice has been sad in many ways. “Shelly and I are at the same point in our lives and he has been a great friend,” Sanford said.

Avon Family Dentistry, Inc., located at 44 Dale Road, provides a full range of dental care to patients of all ages. For information, call 860-677-6405 or visit www.avonfamilydentistry.net.

There is no shortage of hate toward the Nutmeg State from its residents. (At least if the comments on our Facebook page are any indication.)

So much so, that a recent survey from InformCT revealed that nearly half of Connecticut residents say they plan to leave the state in next five years.

So we hit the streets to challenge residents to say three nice things about Connecticut. Here’s what they came up with:

Barbara Butterworth has lived in Avon for the last seven years. From Cincinnati, Butterworth spent 17 years living in Florida and said she felt like she had “moved to heaven” when she moved here to Connecticut. As a hiker, she said she loves the state parks. “In this Farmington Valley area, we have so many beautiful state parks with hills and shade at any time of year,” Butterworth said. She also said she enjoys the culture that is offered here. Butterworth’s third favorite thing is the close proximity to the Long Island Sound and having “the rest of New England at our doorstep” here in Connecticut.

1. The state parks.

2. Arts and culture.

3. The proximity to the Long Island Sound and the rest of New England’s states.

For Evelyn Cordero, of Meriden, getting to participate in outdoor activities from festivals to hiking is what she likes most about Connecticut.

1. Hiking in Hubbard Park.

2. Enjoying the free festivals in Bushnell Park.

3. Spending time at the New Haven Green.

Originally from Missouri, Christina Thompson now resides in Torrington. For her, it’s about the scenery. “It’s just beautiful here,” Thompson said.

1. The libraries.

2. The “big rocks.”

3. The scenery as a whole.

Middletown residents JR & Faraneh Carnegie-Hargreaves say they love Connecticut for a few reasons, but most of those reasons have to do with its location.

1. Connecticut’s centrally located.

2. Its convenience to the Long Island Sound, Hammonnasset Beach State Park and Westerly, Rhode Island.

3. Sunken Garden Poetry offered by the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington.

Granby resident Mark Piwonski’s favorite things about Connecticut have a lot to do with nature and being outdoors. Piwonski said 20 years ago it was nearly impossible to find a dog park, but now he enjoys spending time at the dog park in Granby’s Salmon Brook Park. “I don’t spend that much time inside,” he said.

1. Natural areas for hiking.

2. The dog parks.

3. Clean water efforts.

Windsor resident Tammie Parker works in Hartford and said she loves being close to Bushnell Park and all it has to offer. Parker also said she is discovering that Connecticut has “nice beaches” and she enjoys the vast food scene.

1. Working near Bushnell Park.

2. Connecticut’s beaches.

3. The state’s food scene.

West Suffield resident Steve Grobe said he is glad to see more events being hosted in Connecticut, including concerts at Xfinity, Mohegan Sun and more off-beat events, like the “Big Bounce America Tour” that came to Granby recently.

1. More events being hosted throughout the state.

2. The wilderness, woods and nature.

3. The four seasons.

Originally from New Jersey, Paul Mark came to the Hartford area in 1999. For Mark, #HartfordHasIt.

1. Downtown Hartford’s scenery.

2. The energy of Hartford.

3. The convenience of living in the city.

Originally from Portland, Maine, Melissa Brady and her family moved to Avon seven years ago. Brady and her daughter Reese, 6, gave a shoutout to Connecticut’s schools. “I would say one of the top reasons we moved here was for the schools, so that’s probably a big one for why we love Avon and Connecticut.”

1. The schools in Avon.

2. The library and the pool.

3. Easy access to local goods, including meals at farm-to-table restaurants.

Originally from Massachusetts, Kim Dufrane came to Connecticut about 35 years ago. The now-West Granby resident likes the state’s beauty. “It’s just a beautiful state, it really is,” Dufrane said. She said she enjoys spending time with her two-year-old black lab, Tank, at the dog park at Salmon Brook Park in Granby, she said “[Tank] likes the state forests here, too, that he can run around in.”

1. The architecture.

2. The state parks.

3. The stonewalls and forests.

Hartford-area resident Andrew Carrington said Hartford offers a great food scene, particularly the West Indian food. Carrington said he also likes that the state has “a lot of hidden history and a lot of quirky facts.”

1. Great food.

2. Hidden history.

3. Different cultures and diversity.

Like many other residents we spoke to, Deborah Camp, of East Haddam, is about the beaches, food and the arts scene.

1. Old Saybrook and the beaches.

2. The restaurants in Middletown.

3. Shows at Hartford Stage.

GRANBY — There were angry shouts and frequent interruptions from community members Wednesday night in the town hall's meeting room. Multiple times, a public official had to bang a gavel just to bring a heated public hearing to order.

An Inland Wetlands and Water Commission meeting may not seem like the place for such tension, but with a a 48-unit, multi-family building on the agenda, that's exactly what commission members were faced with.

Developments proposed by Vessel have sparked outrage in other towns in the Farmington Valley, including in Simsbury, where residents have pushed back against a proposed affordable housing development at similar heated public hearings. Some Simsbury residents are also attempting to appeal the Simsbury Inland Wetlands and Water Commission’s decision to approve a wetlands permit with a lawsuit.

The proposed development at 37 Hartford Ave. in Granby would include a four-story building with one-bedroom apartments, said Vessel's attorney Andrea Gomes as she gave an overview of the proposal. The Vessel spokespeople did not specify at the Aug. 9 meeting if any of the units would be designated affordable.

“The development is being proposed in accordance with general statutes 8-30g,” according to Vessel's permit application. The set-aside developments under 8-30g consist of projects in which 30 percent of units are designated for low-income renters.

Located on the southwest side of Hartford Avenue, the entire site is just over 2.5 acres, according to the application. It consists of approximately 932 square feet of wetlands.

James Sipperly, the soil and wetlands scientist who conducted a site evaluation on June 15, told the Commission that he determined there would be no adverse impacts on the wetlands or watercourses due to the project's construction.

More for you

The conditions would even be improved, he said, because Vessel's project includes treating previously untreated stormwater runoff.

The proposed layout for site development is similar to what was approved in 2007 for the construction of a 45-foot-tall office building, said Seamus Moran, the site engineer. “We’re essentially developing what was already developed,” he said.

But many of the residents who spoke at the public hearing said that a 48-unit apartment building and an office space were not the same.

“I am no expert in wetlands, I’m no expert in architecture and I’m no expert in the sewer system,” said Jennifer Christensen at the meeting, who lives across the street from the site. “But it’s clear to me that an approval for a office building has a much lower impact on wetlands, the environment, the neighborhood.”

The property slopes in a general east to west direction toward the west branch of the Salmon Brook, which lies off-site, approximately one quarter mile to the west of the subject property, according to the application.

Other residents that spoke at the podium talked about multiple issues, including stormwater drainage, trash pollution, impact on fishing in the nearby brook, traffic, septic system, snow removal plan and how it would affect the farm road at the edge of the site.

Commission Chairman David Tolli had to repeatedly specify that this commission only had jurisdiction over the wetlands regulations, so community members should save their other comments about the development for the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission is in charge of reviewing and granting wetlands permits and making declaratory rulings regarding development activities within designated wetlands or within a 100-foot buffer zone of the wetlands, according to the town website.

At one point, Tolli and an audience member standing at the back of the room were going back and forth about whether some of the resident’s comments were relevant to the wetlands commission.

Community members also said they were concerned about people damaging the wetlands by attempting to reach the nearby stream.

And after more frustrated comments from the public, Gomes addressed the commission again, emphasizing that concerns about the use of the property was beyond the commission’s purview. One commissioner interrupted her by saying, “You don’t have to lecture us, thanks.”

Sipperly then went back up to the podium to reassure the commission that people couldn’t damage the surrounding area by trying to access the nearby stream because the land was so steep and the vegetation so thick, and more angry disagreement followed, including residents shouting, “That’s your opinion!”

A chorus of more comments throughout the room followed, leading Tolli to use his gavel to quiet the residents down.

After almost two hours, the commission decided to continue the public hearing to the next meeting.
