Off The Beaten Path
This route through northwestern Connecticut is one of the state's quintessential New England drives. The particularly scenic section between Kent and North Canaan follows the Housatonic River for roughly 24 miles, passing through Kent, Cornwall, Sharon, and Canaan. Falls Village and West Cornwall are short detours from the highway. The landscape alternates between wooded hills, open meadows, and charming village centers. Connecticut's tourism office specifically highlights Route 7 as a scenic drive through the Housatonic State Forest and toward Falls Village.
There are plenty of reasons to turn the drive into an afternoon outing. Kent Falls State Park is an obvious stop, while the tiny village of West Cornwall provides access to its historic covered bridge over the Housatonic River. In Falls Village, the historic Main Street is lined with 19th-century Greek Revival, Second Empire, and Queen Anne buildings. The route can also be extended into North Canaan, making it particularly appealing during autumn when the surrounding Litchfield Hills turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold.
For a quieter countryside experience, Route 169 crosses northeastern Connecticut through what is often called the state's "Quiet Corner." The approximately 38-mile route travels through Lisbon, Canterbury, and Brooklyn before continuing through Pomfret and Woodstock. The landscape is filled with rolling farmland, forests, stone walls, historic homes, and small village centers. The northern 32 miles, beginning in Lisbon and continuing to the Massachusetts state line, are federally designated as a National Scenic Byway.
The communities along the road are part of its charm. Canterbury has an attractive historic center, while Brooklyn is known for its classic New England village character. In Pomfret, you can make a detour to Mashamoquet Brook State Park, and Woodstock provides one of the drive's most photogenic stops with its historic buildings and farms, including Roseland Cottage. The route is especially pretty in September and October, when foliage adds color to the already pastoral scenery.
This route is short but exceptionally scenic, making it perfect for travelers who want a beautiful drive without spending half the day in the car. The road stretches approximately 13 miles between Branford and Guilford, winding through wooded areas, marshes, historic neighborhoods, and shoreline communities. About 12 miles of the route are officially designated as a state scenic road, and the corridor contains numerous historic, cultural, and environmental resources.
A worthwhile detour is Stony Creek, a small coastal village within Branford where you can see the harbor and views toward the Thimble Islands. Back on Route 146, the road continues through wetlands and historic properties before reaching Guilford, whose classic Town Green is one of the prettiest village centers along the Connecticut coast. Travelers can continue east on Route 1 toward Madison and Hammonasset Beach State Park for a longer shoreline excursion.
This route provides a different kind of Connecticut road trip, combining coastal scenery with historic villages and Connecticut River landscapes. The full route runs about 28 miles from Old Saybrook to Route 9 just north of Higganum. Along the way, it passes through Essex, Deep River, and Chester before entering Haddam. Its most scenic portions include the southern loop around Old Saybrook and the section through Haddam along the Connecticut River. The Old Saybrook portion includes a 6.1-mile state scenic road, while another scenic section runs for just over nine miles through Haddam.
Begin around Old Saybrook, where Route 154 travels through the historic Fenwick area and along roads near the water before heading north. Continuing toward Essex and Haddam, the scenery changes from coastal neighborhoods to wooded river landscapes. The road has been around the block, so to speak: parts of the alignment follow the old Middlesex Turnpike, a toll road that operated from 1802 to 1876. For a particularly picturesque extension, explore Essex's historic village center or continue toward Haddam Meadows State Park.
This route is a great choice if you want a scenic drive that feels more secluded and wooded. The approximately 22-mile road runs from North Stonington through Voluntown to Sterling, with substantial portions designated as scenic roads. Much of the route passes through the Pachaug State Forest, Connecticut's largest state forest, giving the drive a distinctly rural character.
The scenery changes gradually as you head north. North Stonington offers historic rural landscapes and winding roads, while Voluntown has a small-town center surrounded by forest and countryside. Farther north, Route 49 crosses the Pachaug River and travels through Pachaug State Forest before reaching Sterling, where the Sterling Hill Historic District provides a charming final stop.
This route makes a beautiful east-west trip through the Litchfield Hills. AAA's approximately 27-mile scenic drive begins at the New York state line in Salisbury and follows Route 44 through North Canaan and Norfolk. It then continues through Colebrook to Winsted. The route crosses wooded countryside with rocky outcroppings and mountain scenery along the way.
The route is especially good for combining driving with short stops. Salisbury and nearby Lakeville offer classic village scenery and access to the Twin Lakes area, while North Canaan provides another historic small-town center. In Norfolk, you can make a detour to Haystack Mountain State Park, where a stone observation tower provides expansive views over the Litchfield Hills. Continue through rural Colebrook before finishing in Winsted. Route 44 is beautiful year-round, but its wooded hills make it particularly attractive during fall foliage season.

The approximately 75-mile loop begins in Goshen and runs through West Cornwall and Falls Village. The drive combines winding country roads with farms, historic villages, and mountain vistas.
The route is almost like a sampler of small-town Connecticut. In Goshen, historic buildings and farmland set the tone; West Cornwall brings a covered bridge and Housatonic River scenery; and Falls Village offers an attractive historic Main Street. Continuing through Canaan and Salisbury, travelers encounter lakes, village centers, and mountain views before reaching Sharon. Because the route connects several communities rather than following one highway from beginning to end, it works particularly well as a relaxed full-day drive with plenty of opportunities to stop and explore.
