Home Care North Granby, CT

They say that your golden years are the best years of your life. For most older Americans, that's how it should be - a time to relax, reflect, and live life in a familiar place. After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

However, as seniors grow older, completing daily tasks like showering and enjoying activities such as visiting the historic Dewey-Granby Oak gets harder without someone by their side. Unfortunately, many older Americans aren't able to rely on their adult children for help. The reality in today's world is that family members do not have the skills or time to dedicate to caring for their parents. That's where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in.

Our in-home care services are for people who prefer to stay at home as they grow older but need ongoing care that family or friends cannot provide. More and more older adults prefer to live far away from long-term, institutionalized facilities and closer to the place where they feel most comfortable - their home. “Dear Rick, Over the past three plus years, my father Joseph Ceuch has lived at home assisted by the caregivers from your company Always Best Care of Greater Bristol. This letter is a personal thank you from my father and the entire Ceuch family on how your caregivers treated and attended to my father during this time. The caregivers became part of our extended family who shared in countless family events resulting in beautiful lasting memories. Caregivers Frances Boateng, Jeremy Turner, and Yanice Hernandez were awesome in their care of my father. I want to especially acknowledge Francis as a person who went above and beyond his responsibility and became part of the Ceuch inner circle. It was not uncommon for Francis on his off days to stop by during a family picnic to say hello...he is truly loved by my father. Again, I want to thank you for the loving care your caregivers provided my father. I would highly recommend your company to anyone interested in having a caregiver attend to a loved one. Thanks again”

“Our sister, Barbara has early-onset dementia , and was in sudden need of a personal care assistant until placement in a quality skilled nursing facility became available. We reached out to home health care agencies in her local area but, by this point, had already worked with several agencies for med reminders for Barbara (and 24/7 care for our Mom in another area of CT) and were a bit skeptical that that we’d find one that could provide consistent quality of care. When I spoke with Rick Downey of Always Best Care Senior Services in Bristol, he conveyed both confidence in his knowledge of health care and empathy in understanding the frustrations that families experience when seeking quality care for their loved ones. We were next contacted by their care coordinator,Heather Kozikowski, who came to our sister’s home to conduct an assessment and further explain the services offered by Always Best Care.A further testament to the exceptional quality of Always Best Care is the service and care we’ve received after Barbara is no longer a client; our thanks to Always Best Care for the excellent care of our sister, and the peace-of-mind it afforded our family knowing that she was in such kind and competent hands!”

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in North Granby, CT?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local @ The Barn Restaurant or visit Granby Center Historic District, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in North Granby, CT, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your CT's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in North Granby, CT understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care North Granby, CT

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers North Granby, CT

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • MeadowBrook of Granby
  • Granby Senior Center
  • Stony Hill Village
  • McLean
  • Barkhamsted-Granby Group Homes
  • Salmon Brook Group Home

Ahead of the storm, Gov. Ned Lamont says it’s been about two years since a major storm hit the state.

“I think this storm’s been a long time coming,” Lamont said.

The storm is expected to track along the northeastern coastline throughout the weekend, with the heaviest snowfall expected in Pennsylvania, parts of the Hudson Valley, and portions of New England.

In Massachusetts and portions of Rhode Island, the National Weather Service declared a winter storm warning from 4 p.m. Saturday through 1 a.m. Monday, with snow accumulations of 6 inches up to a foot and winds gusting as high as 35 mph (56 kph).

The weather service predicted similar levels of snow in portions of Maine and New Hampshire, with slightly less — 3 to 6 inches — in areas of Vermont.

Granby/Canton's Will Attianese ties CT record for fumble recoveries for TDs in win over North Branford

GRANBY — Granby/Canton's Will Attianese made quite an impression in Friday night's Pequot battle of unbeatens.

Attianese scored five touchdowns and picked up 186 yards on 17 carries to help Granby/Canton improve to 4-0 with a 39-13 win. Included in his five scores were two fumble recoveries for touchdowns, which tied a Connecticut high school football record.

“Tonight, it was great,” said Attianese, who returned one fumble recovery 60 yards for a TD and recovered the other in the end zone. “Defensively, it was a little bit of just being in the right place at the right time. Offensively, the line did a great job blocking all day. So just fall behind them. They do their thing, I can do mine. It’s a great combo.”

The Bears are off to their best start since they become a co-op in 2019. They played like a team vying for a return to the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

The victory over North Branford was a statement game for Granby/Canton because the first three teams it played were a combined 1-10 before Friday. Coach Erik Shortell said they know they played a well-coached North Branford team with a tough offense an undisciplined team would have trouble stopping.

“I’m proud of the boys,” Shortell said. “We had a fantastic game plan. They executed. That’s why we had so many turnovers. They did their job, and we told them that if they did that good things would happen.”

On the other side, the Thunderbirds (3-1) were denied their best start since the 2012 season. Standout running back Tommy Hansen struggled to find a rhythm against Granby/Canton, picking up 54 yards on 15 carries.

North Branford quarterback AJ Sigel rushed for a touchdown, threw for another and tallied 201 all purpose yards. He did however, fumble the ball and threw two interceptions. A couple key mistakes threw the Thunderbirds off their game plan, coach Anthony Salvati said.

“‘Let’s get back to work,’” Salvati said he told his team after the game. "When we look back at the end of the season, hopefully it’s just a blip on the radar, and we’re where we want to be.”

GRANBY, CT — This week's trek to a Hidden Gem in Hartford and Tolland counties takes us right smack in the middle of Connecticut's northern border and what appears to be an anomaly on the map.

You've probably seen it, but have you really looked at it?

It's not a mistake. Its The Notch.

It takes travelers, in a sequence from west to east from Granby to Southwick, MA; to Congamond Lakes to Suffield and parts of Connecticut are actually father north that parts of Massachusetts.

It's also called the "Southwick Jog."

According to the Connecticut State Library, Connecticut's cutout dates back to 1642, when Massachusetts hired two surveyors to detail the border. Connecticut officials disputed one point as being a couple of miles too far south and the argument lasted for the next 60 years because surveyors hired by either Connecticut or Massachusetts set a number of boundaries favorable to the colony that employed them.

To compound the problem, the towns of Enfield, Somers, Suffield and Woodstock, unhappy with Massachusetts' apparent high taxes, applied for admission into Connecticut in 1724.The state library points out that, in 1793, following the Revolutionary War, both states appointed boundary commissioners to determine a straight line from Union in Connecticut to the New York state line.

According to the state library, in 1797, the commissioners recommended that a disputed 2.5-square-mile tract be awarded to Massachusetts as compensation for its earlier losses of Suffield, Woodstock, Somers and Enfield to Connecticut. In 1804, Connecticut finally agreed to a compromise that partitioned the 2.5-mile area at Congamond Lakes, with Massachusetts receiving five-eighths of the disputed parcel along the west shore and Connecticut receiving the remainder, along the east shore.

The origin of what is likely the first decorated Christmas tree in America has a connection to The Notch. The legend dates back to 1777 and the surrender of the British army during the American Revolution, shortly after the loss at Saratoga that fall.

As legend has it (along with the Windsor Locks Historical Society), a group of Hessian soldiers, now POWs, were making their way to a camp near Boston. One of them, Hendrick Roddemore, broke ranks, most likely near The Notch, and wound up holed out on a farm in Windsor Locks owned by Samuel Denslow.

Denslow took a liking to Roddermore and built the Hessian a cabin on his property, where he lived for some time. Accounts indicate that Roddermore set up a holiday tree near the cabin, per his native tradition.

A winter storm is bringing rain and snow to Connecticut through Wednesday morning. Totals have varied widely depending on location with the northwestern part of the state getting hit the hardest.

Heavy, wet snow fell in the northern parts of the state, with some areas getting 8 to 12 inches, the National Weather Service said. The nor'easter has brought strong winds and the potential for minor coastal flooding, and officials warned residents to be prepared for potential power outages.

A winter storm warning is in effect for northwestern and northeastern parts of the state until 8 a.m. Wednesday, the weather service said. That includes Litchfield, Tolland and Windham counties.

A winter storm warning was in effect for Hartford County through Wednesday morning. Two to 4 inches of snow are possible in Hartford County.

Heavy, wet snow on tree branches will likely result in power outages in the northern parts of the state, the weather service said. Gusty winds could also bring down tree branches.

According to the weather service, snowfall amounts as of Tuesday afternoon ranged from 8 to 15 inches in Granby, 12 inches in Burlington and 10 inches in Simsbury. Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks reported 4 inches.

Since temperatures will be near and above freezing, there will be a large range in snow totals, said Garett Argianas, Connecticut Public’s meteorologist.

“Snow totals will be elevation-dependent, with the greatest amounts in the higher elevations,” Argianas said.

State government offices and courts were closed Tuesday.

Northwestern CT gets hit hard

The northwest corner of Connecticut has received the worst of the nor’easter so far. That's where the majority of Eversource's 12,000 power outages were being reported by mid Tuesday afternoon.

About 98% of the roughly 2,000 customers in Goshen were without power at around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday Eversource reported.

Colebrook, on the Connecticut-Massachusetts border in the upper eastern corner of Litchfield County, got around 10 inches of snow by 6 a.m. Tuesday in the center of town and snow was still expected to fall for several more hours, according to its first selectman, Chris Johnstone.

It's a heavy snow, he said.

"The road foreman told me in some places the tree branches are weighted down with so much snow that they are hitting the plow trucks, they're blocking the roads, and they have to drive around them," he said.

Johnstone says a tree took out one transformer by 6 a.m.

Nearly 40% of Eversource's customers in Colebrook were without power Tuesday morning. And Johnstone expected that number to grow.

"The wind is what concerns me the most because of all the dead ash trees and dead pine trees,” he said. “On a good day they drop branches, so you put a little bit of snow on them and some wind, I don't think we've seen the worst of this yet.”

Southern CT: some snow, but more rain

Southern parts of the state are more likely to see less snow but plenty of rain.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for northern Fairfield County until 6 a.m. Wednesday. Meanwhile, a separate winter weather advisory will be in effect for the northern parts of New Haven, New London and Middlesex counties until 6 a.m. Wednesday. Those areas could see anywhere from 2 to 5 inches of snow.

And a coastal flood advisory will be in effect for southern Fairfield and New Haven counties starting at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

DOT sending crews across CT

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is monitoring the forecast and anticipates sending all drivers out across the state, with a supplement of nearly 200 contractors.

Spokesperson Josh Morgan asks people to stay home if possible.

“Please delay travel if you can,” he said. “If you have to go out, please slow down. Give yourself that extra travel time and don’t crowd our plows.”

If you have to be on the roads, Morgan recommends cleaning the exterior of your entire vehicle – not just the windshield – to avoid causing accidents and to leave plenty of space between your vehicle and other vehicles.

Preparing for power outages

Energy provider Eversource said it's monitoring the weather and staging extra staff and equipment across the state. The company expects potential power outages over a lengthy period of time — and as repairs are made, additional outages may occur.

"We’re gearing up for the powerful nor’easter expected to bring heavy, wet snow and strong winds,” Eversource said on Twitter.

Those strong winds pose a safety concern for workers and may delay power restoration, officials said.

United Illuminating says it’s bringing in crews from out of state to assist with any power outages.

Eversource recommends that people stock up on non-perishable items and paper goods before the storm.

For many who visit, like North Granby resident Jamie Gamble, the 210-acre Dismal Brook Wildlife Preserve is love at first sight. Gamble purchased the property in 2006 and donated the preserve to the Granby Land Trust in 2020.

“I walked the ridgeline, saw all of this untouched, hardwood forest, then got to the pond and felt like I was in the Adirondacks,” Gamble said in a trust newsletter soon after donating the land. “This 210 acres of diverse habitat represents a unique combination of woods, wetland, open fields, and ridgeline to be cherished by the creatures living here, and nature lovers exploring the landscape.”

After writing about Connecticut’s special natural-world places for the past 25 years, I shouldn’t be surprised or fall in love with places over and over again. But I do. And Dismal Brook is not the least bit dismal. It’s a beautiful jaunt from the trailhead along the 3½ miles of trails.

Even the drive to get there is magical as you drive past old barns and farm fields, a journey back to the past without using a time machine. Or as Gamble observed when he first drove down Loomis Road where the preserve is located: “It was like I’d walked through the wardrobe into Narnia. It was this incredible natural passage.”

A good sign of a must-see preserve is a nearly full parking lot on a weekday. I passed a family of birders on my way into the preserve, all with binoculars scanning the tree line and marshes. According to the trust, bird surveys conducted at the parcel since 2007 have documented 134 species including pied-billed grebe, least bittern, sora and little blue heron.

A short loop trail marked with green blazes takes visitors around a small vernal pool. The main trail, marked with yellow blazes, passes a bird-viewing platform with tremendous views across Dismal Brook and the northern end of the marsh. The trail winds to Stevenson Field and a stunning forest opening that showcases the northern portion of the marsh out to the ridges of mountains in Massachusetts.

The trail continues along Dismal Brook with an option to cross a bridge and explore the preserve’s western ridges. Remaining on the eastern side, visitors pass a small cemetery worth exploring. The burial site marks the final resting place of five members of the Day Family, who farmed the land from 1771 through 1887.

The graves have engraved messages such as “Reader behold as you pass by as you are now so once was I. As I am soon you must be. Prepare for death and follow me” and “Death is a debt to Nature due which I have paid and so must you.” Not exactly a pep talk for the rest of the hike.

Hikers can see the stone walls that once fenced in pastures and farm fields. There are old foundations and the possible ruins of a cider mill, sawmill and tavern. The trail continues across Dismal Brook to a second birding platform with views across the southern portion of the marsh. The trail returns to the forest and leads to a cabin high on the hill.

According to the trust, Robert C. Glazier, president of Society for Savings and his wife, Mary Skinner Chapin Glazier, purchased the old Day Farm in 1930 and hired Hilding Stevenson, a neighboring dairy farmer, to build a cabin and an outhouse on the property. The cabin still stands nearly a century later and visitors can sit on a rocking chair or bench with a view down to Creamer Pond.

“Sitting on its front porch, it is easy to imagine what life was like there in 1930. While so much has changed in the outside world, in here — incredibly — not much has changed at all,” the trust notes.

The artificial pond was created by one of the most impressive dams I’ve seen across the state. Stone slabs are piled high and a path runs across the spillway of the dam. A pair of inviting Adirondack chairs sit near a concrete dock, and a short trail marked with orange blazes passes huge hemlocks growing on the edge of the pond as the path winds to an overlook. From the cabin a pair of trails allow visitors to explore the rugged ridges overlooking Dismal valley.

The state has done an amazing job preserving Connecticut. It’s a team effort by governors, city and town leaders, preservation organizations, land trusts and individuals. And those like Jamie Gamble who purchase land and donate it as open space for future generations to enjoy deserve a special honor and our collective appreciation.
