High water leads to road closures, crop damage, and emergency rescues
UPPER LEACOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. —
Heavy rainstorms caused significant flooding in Upper Leacock Township on Tuesday evening, blocking roads, damaging crops, and requiring emergency rescues.
Crews responded to flooding on Geist Road around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, where runoff overwhelmed the storm systems and forced the road to be closed.
“This is typical along this area. Some areas along 23 that we have flooding when it rains that quickly and the storm systems just can't handle it,” said Sam Huber of the Upper Leacock Fire Company.
Tyler Morton, a farmer who lives off Geist Road, said the flooding has worsened over the years.
“It has gotten significantly worse in the last 15 years,” Morton said.
Flooding also affected West Main Street in Ephrata, where emergency crews rescued an elderly couple trapped in their car and a snapping turtle submerged in the water.
“They had water literally up to the windows and going in their car,” Huber said.
Morton expressed frustration over the ongoing flooding, which he said has negatively impacted his crops.
“Very frustrated,” Morton said, adding, “It just continues to get worse for not only the residents here but the general public.”
Neighbors in the area have been vocal about the issue and are hoping for a solution soon.
“We as neighbors, landowners here, farm owners have tried to address some of these problems upstream,” Morton said.
Huber urged people to take flooding seriously and avoid driving into floodwaters.
“For God's sake, don't drive into the water because you really don't know how deep it is or what's floating down in there,” Huber said.
