Soon after the death of their father William Henry Butler in the early 1940s, his 10 children made a decision that they would celebrate their mother Emma’s upcoming birthday by bringing the entire extended family together in Concord, Pa.
Nine decades later, in a bond formed by tradition, 67 siblings, sons and daughters, cousins, aunts and uncles enjoyed the 80th Butler family reunion at Nottingham Park on July 10. Beneath sunny skies, they arrived at Pavilion #7 from Chester County and Delaware, as well as from New Jersey, California, Tennessee, Virginia and Arizona for a long day of food, conversation and a cornhole tournament.
Two of the three surviving Butler children – 99-year-old Lillian Weeks and 84-year-old Henrietta Coulborn – were in attendance, while their 97-year-old sister Irene celebrated from her extended care facility in nearby Elkton, Md.
For the first several years of the reunion, events were held at family homes and at Clayton Park in Glen Mills, but Nottingham Park has played host to the family for the past 30 years. The reunion has a nearly perfect record; they have held the event every year except for 2020, which was postponed due to COVID-19.
“The day after this reunion, I will reserve this pavilion for next year,” said Irene Ferguson, who reunited with her sister Emily Boulden, who traveled 10 hours from Tennessee. “Everybody knows that the reunion is always the second Sunday in July.”
Ferguson said that the strength of what has become a yearly ritual was first formed by the unbreakable bond of the 10 Butler children.
“There were seven girls and three boys in the family, and after they left my grandparents’ home, they all raised their families nearby and remained very close,” she said. “Eventually, there were 31 cousins, and at some of the earlier reunions, we as kids would play as many as 10 traditional games, and we all loved it.”
In retrospect, the logistics of both organizing and attending a large-scale event such as a family reunion – one that has reached as many as 120 in attendance in past years and drawn relatives from around the country – seem relatively simple when measured against the common denominator of family, Ferguson said.
“We all love each other a lot, and we have done this for so long that it has become a part of our lives,” she said. “Soon, we’re hoping that the next generation is going to take over and keep our family tradition alive.”

If you find yourself looking for a festive and free drive-through Christmas light display in Pennsylvania, look no further than the annual light display at Herr’s Snack Factory.
The Herr’s Christmas Lights are located on the company’s corporate campus in Nottingham, in the southwestern corner of Chester County, Pennsylvania. This display is located roughly 45 minutes from West Chester and Lancaster and 75 minutes from Philadelphia. It’s also only two miles north of the Pennsylvania/Maryland border.
Herr’s has been setting up Christmas lights on their corporate camps for over three decades, making this one of the oldest light displays in the area. Over time, the display has grown to include more than 600,000 lights.
Since the display is free, there’s no ticket window to drive past. Instead, follow the signs along Route 272 (West Christine Road) just east of Route 1 to find this festive spot. Because this is a drive-through display, visitors are asked to stay in their cars and not get out for a closer look at the lights.
The Herr’s Christmas Lights start as soon as you turn off of Route 272 onto Herr Drive.
You’ll notice as you drive along the roughly one-mile route that the lights here create a magical and festive forest on either side of the road. This is most evident in the second half of the display that goes around the corporate office.
From Herr Drive, the route directs you onto Old Baltimore Pike and past the Herr’s factory and the entrance for the Herr’s Snack Factory Tour. As you drive through this area, you’ll notice that both the factory and the homes and other buildings near it are decked out with lights for the holiday season.
After doing a circle around the factory, the route returns to Herr Drive before turning onto the road that leads around the corporate offices.
In my opinion, this second half of the route is much better than the first as you are surrounded more by lights.
It’s worth noting that the majority of the lights are static lights wrapped around trees, as opposed to holiday scenes or even flickering lights. While these trees are no doubt beautiful, unique, and create an almost magical forest setting, don’t come expecting movement within the display.
Also, unlike some displays, there is no music that accompanies the Herr’s Christmas Lights. I’d definitely recommend bringing some holiday music along with you to listen to while you drive through the lights to help create a festive mood in your car.
However, despite these shortcomings, this is a great Christmas thing to do in Pennsylvania, especially for those looking for a free drive-through light display or who live a short distance away from Nottingham, PA.
While the Herr’s Christmas light display isn’t, in my opinion, worth a long drive just to do on its own, it would be a great way to end the day after touring the Herr’s Factory (which is closed until further notice), exploring the covered bridges in Chester County and Lancaster County, or hiking at the nearby (and very unique) Nottingham Serpentine Barrens.
The Herr’s Christmas Lights are located at the Herr’s corporate campus at the following address: 20 Herr Dr, Nottingham, PA 19362. When you get near here on Route 272, look for signs for the light display.
The display is open from dusk until dawn (roughly 5pm to 7am) from November 22, 2023 through January 2, 2024.
It can be quite busy here on weekends and close to Christmas, so I recommend visiting early in the season (but not on Thanksgiving weekend) and on a weeknight. Of course, since this display is lit up all night, you could also visit very late at night or very early in the morning and would likely have no traffic.

Speaking with siblings Gemma and Jamie Praditngam, the masterminds behind Prad Thai, along with their brother, Dom, I learned that Bang Pa In is the name of the area in Thailand where their ancestral home is found. It's named after the Royal family's summer palace that was built there, and their house on stilts along the Chao Phraya River has served as a gathering point for the entire Praditngam family for generations.
Their first supper club was held afterhours at The Specialty Coffee & Eatery, but I managed to grab a ticket to their second supper club that took place on 25 April before it sold out, with the evening hosted at one of my all-time favourite bars, The Berliner in Beeston.
Like most supper clubs, you're seated at a communal table, which only adds to the convivial atmosphere. An eclectic mix of guests, ranging from students to nuclear physicists, came together for one thing: good food.
This all felt rather serendipitous, seeing as The Berliner was where I tried Prad Thai for the very first time, back in their early days of pop-ups, and subsequently fell in love with their Thai food. In fact, prad Thai single-handedly changed my perceptions and aversions to street food, opening a whole new world of exploration in Nottingham for me. So really, I owe a lot of gratitude to them.
Since that momentous day, I've witnessed this terrific trio's journey go from strength to strength – from their humble beginnings in a yellow tent in Wollaton serving street food during lockdown, to hosting unique and sold-out supper clubs that offer traditional yet elevated Thai dishes.

An eclectic mix of guests, ranging from students to nuclear physicists, came together for one thing: good food. Conversation flowed, laughs were had, and no doubt new friendships were forged, with numbers and Instagram handles exchanged by the end of the evening.
Priced at just £35 per person for five courses, this is a steal, considering most supper clubs charge upwards of £60. Throughout the evening, we were brought an exciting collection of Thai dishes; some individual plates, some shared platters, and a central dish that the whole menu was based around.
It’s worth mentioning that The Berliner also flexed their mixology skills by creating two Thai-inspired cocktails for the evening: a Thai margarita, and a sabai sabai with Mekhong (the spirit of Thailand), sugar, Thai basil and soda.
While the menu may change for future suppers, a standout dish for me was the khao soi: a spicy chicken curry broth served with slippery handmade noodles, fresh herbs, lime, and the most delicious, crunchy cracker that soaked up the rich broth. It was unbelievably good and very ‘slurp-worthy.’
Other highlights included son-in-law's eggs: tamarind-glazed quail eggs served in a nest of crispy vermicelli; chargrilled chicken satay skewers with peanut sauce and pickle; grandmother's pork salad: a small medley of fresh herbs with grilled pork tossed in khun yai's sauce with toasted coconut. The mango sticky rice dessert, made with imported mangoes from Thailand and India, was a sweet finale that left a lasting impression.
There's an innate sincerity and humility in the preparation and presentation of the food. Perhaps it's the team's balanced blend of modesty and passion for their craft, or the history behind how they learned to cook from their dad, Gung, who owns The Thai Kitchen in Long Eaton. Or perhaps it simply comes down to the fact that they’ve become more like friends to me over the years, and have retained the same humble attitude they’ve had since day one.
I'm certain that everyone present that evening would join me in applauding the outstanding food, Jamie's culinary prowess in the kitchen, and Gemma's captivating storytelling that transported us to Thailand with each dish.

Located along the Maryland-Pennsylvania border, the State Line Serpentine Barrens contains some of the last major remnants of serpentine grassland in eastern North America. The thin soils covering this light-green bedrock contain high levels of nickel, chromium and other metals that prove toxic to most plants and animals. This habitat, while lacking nutrients, supports unusual, rare or endangered species that have adapted to the harsh environment over thousands of years.
The Nature Conservancy has worked to protect globally rare serpentine barrens since 1979, when it joined Chester County’s Concerned Citizens of West Nottingham Township to oppose quarrying the serpentine rock. The partnership blocked the project, and prevented further damage to surrounding natural areas. Since then, TNC has worked with partners at the township, county and state levels, as well as with private individuals, to permanently protect and manage additional tracts containing this fragile habitat.

The Friends of the State Line Serpentine Barrens organize grassland maintenance, restoration, and outreach activities across all of the serpentine barrens in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Succession—the gradual replacement of barrens vegetation by woodlands caused by urban development—hinders fire and grazing required to maintain this habitat. Illegal dumping, mining and invasive plants also jeopardize this globally significant habitat.
TNC joined Concerned Citizens of West Nottingham Township in 1979 to oppose a proposed serpentine rock quarry, and has acquired additional tracts containing this fragile habitat since then. In some cases, TNC transferred ownership to like-minded public and private landowners. In other cases, TNC retained ownership and long-term management, including prescribed burning, tree cutting, leaf removal, replanting serpentine grasses, protecting buffer lands, maintaining trails, and mapping and monitoring.

Matt Dolan has been hired as the new coach for Germantown Academy Academy, the school announced this week. Dolan, who is replacing long-time coach Jim Fenerty, served as the the Patriots’ freshman coach and assisted the varsity team in 2011-12. Dolan then went on to coach Christopher Dock the following two seasons, where he took the Pioneers to the district playoffs in both years.
