After all, senior citizens in the U.S. have worked tirelessly to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise families.

What is Non-Medical Senior Care in Otis, LA?

lm-check

Home is where the heart is. While that saying can sound a tad cliche, it is especially true for many seniors living in America. When given a choice, older adults most often prefer to grow older at home. An AARP study found that three out of four adults over the age of 50 want to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

lm-check

When you begin to think about why, it makes sense. Home offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity.

lm-check

The truth is, as we age, we begin to rely on others for help. When a family is too busy or lives too far away to fulfill this role, in-home senior care is often the best solution. Home care services allow seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

lm-check

At Always Best Care, we offer a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they get the help they need to remain independent. As your senior loved one gets older, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even if you live far away.

Respite Care

Respite Care Services

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults living in the U.S. provide care to someone over 50 years old. Unfortunately, these caregivers experience stress, exhaustion, and even depression. Our respite care services help family caregivers address urgent obligations, spend time with their children, and enjoy nearby activities. Perhaps more importantly, respite care gives family members time to recharge and regroup. Taking personal time to de-stress reduces the risk of caregiver burnout. So, if you've always wanted to eat at the local Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar or visit Francois Cousin House, don't feel bad. Doing so is great for both you and your loved one.

At the end of the day, our goal is to become a valuable part of your senior's daily routine. That way, we may help give them the highest quality of life possible. We know that staying at home is important for your loved one, and we are here to help make sure that is possible.

Aging in Place: The Preferred Choice for Most Seniors

While it's true that some seniors have complicated medical needs that prevent them from staying at home, aging in place is often the best arrangement for seniors and their families. With a trusted caregiver, seniors have the opportunity to live with a sense of dignity and do so as they see fit - something that is unavailable to many older people today.

In-home care makes it possible for millions of seniors to age in place every year. Rather than moving to a strange nursing home, seniors have the chance to stay at home where they feel the happiest and most comfortable.

Here are just a few of the reasons why older men and women prefer to age at home:

How much does a senior's home truly mean to them?

A study published by the American Society on Aging found that more than half of seniors say their home's emotional value means more than how much their home is worth in monetary value. It stands to reason, then, that a senior's home is where they want to grow old.

With the help of elderly care in Otis, LA, seniors don't have to age in a sterilized care facility. Instead, they can age gracefully in the place they want to be most: their home. In contrast, seniors who move to a long-term care facility must adapt to new environments, new people, and new systems that the facility implements. At this stage in life, this kind of drastic change can be more harmful than helpful.

Institutional care facilities like nursing homes often put large groups of people together to live in one location. On any given day, dozens of staff members and caregivers run in and out of these facilities. Being around so many new people in a relatively small living environment can be dangerous for a seniors' health and wellbeing. When you consider that thousands of seniors passed away in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, opting for in-home care is often a safer, healthier choice for seniors.

Aging in place has been shown to improve seniors' quality of life, which helps boost physical health and also helps insulate them from viral and bacterial risks found in elderly living facilities.

For many seniors, the ability to live independently with assistance from a caregiver is a priceless option. With in-home care, seniors experience a higher level of independence and freedom - much more so than in other settings like a nursing home. When a senior has the chance to age in place, they get to live life on their own terms, inside the house that they helped make into a home. More independence means more control over their personal lives, too, which leads to increased levels of fulfillment, happiness, and personal gratification. Over time, these positive feelings can manifest into a healthier, longer life.

More independence, a healthier life, and increased comfort are only a few benefits of aging in place. You have to take into consideration the role of cost and convenience. Simply put, it's usually easier and more affordable to help seniors age in place than it is to move them into an institutional care facility. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, seniors who age in the comfort of their homes can save thousands of dollars per month.

In-home care services from Always Best Care, for instance, are often less expensive than long-term solutions, which can cost upwards of six figures per year. To make matters worse, many residential care facilities are reluctant to accept long-term care insurance and other types of payment assistance.

With Always Best Care's home care services, seniors and their families have a greater level of control over their care plans. In-home care gives seniors the chance to form a bond with a trusted caregiver and also receive unmatched care that is catered to their needs. In long-term care facilities, seniors and their loved ones have much less control over their care plan and have less of a say in who provides their care.

Affordable Care

In-home care is a valuable resource that empowers seniors to age in place on their own terms. However, a big concern for many families and their loved ones is how much in-home care costs. If you're worried that in-home care is too expensive, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it is one of the most affordable senior care arrangements available.

Typically, hiring an Always Best Care in-home caregiver for a few hours a week is more affordable than sending your loved one to a long-term care facility. This is true even for seniors with more complex care needs.

At Always Best Care, we will work closely with you and your family to develop a Care Plan that not only meets your care needs, but your budget requirements, too. Once we discover the level of care that you or your senior need, we develop an in-home care plan that you can afford.

In addition to our flexible care options, families should also consider the following resources to help offset potential home care costs:

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid may help reduce in-home care costs. Review your LA's Medicaid program laws and benefits, and make sure your senior's financial and medical needs meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Attendance and aid benefits through military service can cover a portion of the costs associated with in-home care for veterans and their spouses.
Many senior care services like in-home care are included in long-term care insurance options. Research different long-term care solutions to find a plan that provides coverage for senior care.
Home care can be included as part of a senior's private insurance plan. Read over your loved one's insurance policy carefully or speak with their insurance provider to determine if in-home care is covered.
Depending on the life insurance plan, you may be able to apply your policy toward long-term care. You may be able to use long-term-care coverage to help pay for in-home elderly care.
 Senior Care Otis, LA

Compassionate Care. Trusted Caregivers.

When you or your senior loved one needs assistance managing daily tasks at home, finding a qualified caregiver can be challenging. It takes a special kind of person to provide reliable care for your senior loved one. However, a caregiver's role involves more than meal preparation and medication reminders. Many seniors rely on their caregivers for companionship, too.

Our companion care services give seniors the chance to socialize in a safe environment and engage in activities at home. These important efforts boost morale and provide much-needed relief from repetitive daily routines. A one-on-one, engaging conversation can sharpen seniors' minds and give them something in which to be excited.

At Always Best Care, we only hire care providers that we would trust to care for our own loved ones. Our senior caregivers in Otis, LA understand how important it is to listen and communicate with their seniors. A seemingly small interaction, like a short hug goodbye, can make a major difference in a senior's day. Instead of battling against feelings of isolation, seniors begin to look forward to seeing their caregiver each week.

Understanding the nuances of senior care is just one of the reasons why our care providers are so great at their job.

Unlike some senior care companies, our caregivers must undergo extensive training before they work for Always Best Care. In addition, our caregivers receive ongoing training throughout the year. This training ensures that their standard of care matches up to the high standards we've come to expect. During this training, they will brush up on their communication skills, safety awareness, and symptom spotting. That way, your loved one receives the highest level of non-medical home care from day one.

Assisted Living Referral Services

While it's true that many seniors prefer to age at home, sometimes in-home care isn't the best fit. For those seniors and their families, choosing an assisted living facility makes more sense. Unfortunately, finding the optimal care facility is easier said than done in today's day and age. That's when Always Best Care's assisted living referral services begin to make a lot of sense.

Assisted living is a form of housing intended for seniors who require varying degrees of medical and personal attention. Accommodations may include single rooms, apartments, or shared living arrangements. Assisted living communities are typically designed to resemble a home-like environment and are physically constructed to encourage the independence of residents.

Respite Care Otis, LA

At assisted living communities, seniors receive help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They may also benefit from coordination of services with outside healthcare providers, and monitoring of resident activities to ensure their health, safety, and well-being. Caregivers who work at assisted living communities can also provide medication administration and personal care services for older adults.

Other services offered within assisted living communities can include some or all of the following:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Recreational Activities
  • Social Outings
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Family Visitation
  • Personal Care
 Caregivers Otis, LA

At Always Best Care, our representatives can match your senior's emotional, physical, and financial needs with viable assisted living communities nearby. Results are based on comparative data, so you can select the best choice for you or your loved one.

Always Best Care works closely with local senior living communities to gain valuable knowledge that we then use to help seniors and their loved ones make informed decisions. This information can include basic care and rent, resident availability, and services provided. Because Always Best Care is compensated by these communities, we provide senior living referral services at no extra cost to you.

Some of the most popular assisted living communities to consider in our area include the following:

  • Audubon Care Homes - Dreyfous House
  • Fidelis Residential Care Homes
  • Oak Park Village at Slidell
  • Azalea Estates of Slidell
  • Park Place Group Home
  • Gardens Care Senior Living - Columbine Acres
Home Care Otis, LA

For many seniors, moving into a senior living community revolves around how and when they want to make a transition to more involved care. Some seniors are more proactive about transitioning to independent living. Others choose to remain home until their care needs or other requirements are satisfied. Hurricane Otis stuns Mexico, slamming Acapulco with ‘brutal’ Category 5 strength and cutting off contact

MEXICO CITY —

A Category 5 hurricane, the most powerful on record to hit Mexico’s Pacific coast, slammed into Acapulco early Wednesday, leaving the resort city without power and cut off from road and air access amid devastation that officials were only beginning to assess.

The fast-moving Hurricane Otis made landfall near Acapulco at 12:25 a.m. and tore through the coastal zone with torrential rains and 165 mph winds, shaking structures and tearing roofs off buildings.

There was no immediate word on casualties or an official accounting of the damage as contact with the area was “completely lost,” a grave President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said at a morning news conference in Mexico City, 235 miles to the northeast of Acapulco.

Relief crews and military aid units were trying to reach Acapulco and smaller towns in Guerrero state, but landslides and debris blocked major highways, airports were shuttered and rivers were raging over their banks.

The National Hurricane Center had warned of a “nightmare scenario” as Otis bore down on Acapulco, which is home to almost 1 million permanent residents. Many inhabitants reside in precarious cliff-side communities vulnerable to landslides during downpours. Hillside neighborhoods and towns outside Acapulco were also vulnerable.

Otis, fueled by warm offshore waters, rapidly escalated into a Category 5 hurricane, giving authorities and residents relatively little time to brace for its impact.

Experts said the storm’s surprisingly swift transformation from tropical storm into the most powerful class of hurricane may be another indication of how global warming is shifting weather patterns.

Oct. 6, 2022

Images circulating on news sites and social media showed vast destruction throughout Acapulco and elsewhere in Guerrero state. Terrified residents and visitors sheltered in homes and hotel rooms as windows shattered, pieces of buildings flew in the air and the city’s signature palm trees bowed in the ferocious winds.

Luisa Peña hid in a closet in her hotel room in Acapulco as the ceiling collapsed, the windows blew out and the floors flooded.

“I began to pray, to meditate, to try and calm myself although the panic was so great that the only thing I asked for was one more chance,” a visibly shaken Peña, her hair blowing wildly, said in a widely circulated video on social media.

Sandra Romandía Vega, a journalist who was taking refuge in a shelter, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, of the “brutal” clamor as Otis enveloped Acapulco. “A roar, a fury that made things fly, chairs, umbrellas, trees, and the echo of devastation.”

After the storm moved inland, diminishing to below tropical storm strength but still unleashing heavy rain, images of mayhem emerged from Acapulco. Dazed residents picked their way through streets littered with debris as emergency vehicle lights flashed.

Video of the typically bustling downtown hotel zone showed flattened palm trees, condo towers with their facades sheared off and mangled seaside restaurants. Roads were blocked by battered cars and heaps of twisted metal.

The level of destruction in some of the city’s most upscale districts raised concerns about the fate of those in poorer areas, where many reside in simple hillside homes made of cinder block and tin.

Mexico’s state electricity provider said the storm knocked out power to more than half a million users. By midday, it said it had restored power to about 40% of them.

López Obrador was en route to the region, accompanied by his defense and naval chiefs in vehicles along the heavily damaged highway. The Mexican president said Otis was stronger than Pauline, the Category 4 hurricane that hit the country’s Pacific coast in 1997, killing hundreds and destroying or damaging thousands of homes.

Alarmed about the fate of loved ones in Acapulco, people began posting pictures on social media of relatives and others with whom they had lost contact — asking if anyone knew their whereabouts — as the tortuous communication blackout dragged on.

“There have only been drops of information,” Sen. Manuel Añorve, a federal senator representing Guerrero state who was in Mexico City when the storm hit, told the Diario 24 Horas news outlet. “I haven’t been able to contact my colleagues in Guerrero, I haven’t been able to reach my wife, my children, my mother, my siblings, my friends. ... I’m very worried.”

Daniel Negrete, 33, hasn’t heard from his mother, Adriana Esqueda, 64, since the hurricane struck.

She left Mexico City with three relatives on Tuesday to spend six days lounging at the Torre Blanca condominium in Acapulco. As the rain and wind intensified in the early evening, Esqueda called her son and told him that they would shelter in the apartment. A few hours later, she called again to say the weather had gotten worse, and he suggested that they stay far from the apartment’s windows.

“She said yes, not to worry and that she’d let me know in the case of anything,” Negrete said.

Their last conversation was just before midnight. He hasn’t been able to reach her by phone or text. Negrete, who lives in Mexico City, spent Wednesday posting messages on social media asking people to contact him if they had information about the condo. He wanted to go find her but backtracked after learning about the road damage.

“All the time you’re thinking, what happened, is your family OK, especially my mother, and waiting for news.”

Karla Altamira, 40, said she had not heard from her brother, Carlos, 35, since just before the storm hit.

World & Nation

Oct. 2, 2023

Carlos, a Mexico City resident, was in Acapulco for an international mining conference and staying at a Holiday Inn on the beach. In one of his last voice messages to his family before he lost service, he said his hotel room no longer felt safe, and that hotel administrators had ushered him and other guests into a basement area.

“We have no idea what’s going on,” Karla said. “It’s very frightening.”

But she said she didn’t blame authorities for a lack of preparation. “Nobody knew it would be so strong,” she said. “We were all caught off guard.”

A day before Otis struck, the storm had been forecast to grow from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane before hitting land. But it gained wind speeds of 115 mph in just 24 hours, said experts, calling it one of the fastest such accelerations on record.

Climate experts said more analysis was necessary to explain exactly how and why the hurricane intensified so quickly, but many agreed that El Niño and human-driven climate change are probably both to blame.

“I would expect that all these factors contributed,” said Suzana Camargo, a professor at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

World & Nation

July 12, 2023

El Niño, a naturally occurring climate pattern driven by shifts in winds and currents in the Pacific, is active this year, and often leads to more hurricane activity in the region, she said.

But the burning of oil, coal and gas, which expel heat-trapping carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere, also probably played a role, she added. Most of that extra heat has been absorbed into the ocean — and warmer waters as well as warmer air add potency to tropical storms.

“It is making them stronger,” Camargo said.

A recent study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that Atlantic Ocean hurricanes were now more than twice as likely to strengthen from a Category 1 into a Category 3 hurricane during a 24-hour period than during the 1970s and 1980s.

Climate & Environment

Aug. 18, 2023

“While it would take specific research and additional analyses to tie Hurricane Otis directly to climate change, we do know that warmer ocean temperatures can support the strengthening of a storm like Otis,” said Andra Garner, an author of the recent study and an assistant professor at Rowan University in New Jersey.

“A warmer climate really stacks the deck against us, if you want to think of it that way,” Garner added. “It makes it more likely and more possible for storms like Otis to occur.”

Times special correspondent Cecilia Sánchez Vidal in Mexico City, contributed to this report.

In a runway presentation that easily rivals the level of talent shown at Los Angeles Fashion Week, juniors and graduating seniors of Otis College of Art and Design created more than 100 looks for a black-tie crowd at the 33rd annual Otis Scholarship and Benefit Show in Beverly Hills on Saturday night.

The event also feted three California born-and-bred designers as the evening’s honorees, including Carlos Alberini, CEO of Lucky Brand, and Gary Schoenfeld, CEO of PacSun. Trina Turk, who splits her time between Los Angeles and Palm Springs (where she recently debuted a second area boutique inside The Parker Palm Springs), was awarded with the 2015 Otis Fashion Innovation Award.

“It’s actually exciting because its our 20th year in business and I’ve been a mentor for Otis for at least five or six years,” said Turk, who wore a floor-length zebra-printed gown from her holiday 2015 collection for the affair. ‘When they told me I was getting this award, I thought it was both timely and exciting.”

Turk, along with Joe McCarty of Lane Bryant and designers from the likes of Urban Outfitters, Anne Cole swimwear, PacSun and Roxy, were among those who offered guidance to the Otis students as they put together their creations for the evening, the theme for which was ”A Celebration of Water.” With hair by Vidal Sassoon and makeup by Napoleon Perdis, more than 55 models paraded down the runway before a rapt audience that included Bruce W. Ferguson, the president-elect of Otis College of Art and Design, and Quicksilver founder Bob McKnight, who received a surprise tribute from Volcom, Billabong and Reef executives.

Also on hand for the festivities was legendary fashion designer Bob Mackie, who earned the title Sultan of Sequins for the glamorous looks he has created throughout his career for everyone from Cher to Judy Garland to Whitney Houston.

“I work with the kids while we’re [preparing for the show]. It’s always surprising how it comes out,” said Mackie, who has mentored Otis students since the early 1980s. “I’m always impressed with the level of the students and what they do. They work so hard, they’re really trained in a wonderful way.

LA-native Otis Kane returns with his signature soul/R&B sound in new single “Fight For You”.

The romantic tune is smooth and sultry, Kane’s raspy vocals dancing over the sentimental production. “Fight For You” is like any good classic – simple and true. Kane dedicates the record to letting his love know that he’ll always be there, through hell and high water and despite how much they may find themselves at odds.

““Fight For You” is a song about REAL love. I don’t think love is ever perfect. There are always ups and downs— It’s always a battle, but if you want something, you fight for it. Anyone who’s ever been in love can probably relate to that in some way.” Otis Kane

The soothing track is tied up with a figurative bow as an impressively expressive guitar solo leads you out and his haunting vocals slowly fade away. It perfectly encapsulates the love and yearning that still exists in any hard relationship.

As a multi-instrumentalist and seasoned producer, Otis handles most of his own production, and is excited to use all of his talents and years of experience to bring his music to the world.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Anthony Vasquez who writes and records as Otis Kane found a passion for music at a very young age. His football coach at the time had ties to the music industry, which led to his first recording studio experience. From then on, Vasquez knew that he wanted to pursue a career in music. He went on to spend one year in school as a music major, but left after he was given the opportunity to work for music legend Nelle Hooper (Soul II Soul, Bjork, No Doubt). He worked and traveled with Nelle for a little over a year before he was offered the position of MD/keyboard player for Capitol Records artist Lolene, touring with Lolene for a year and securing his first major label production on her record. After touring, Otis opened a studio in Los Angeles called STRZ Enterprises. STRZ became a hot spot in Hollywood graced with superstars before he eventually left to pursue his own artist journey.

Otis Kane’s natural talent as a singer/songwriter & producer has already led him to work with some of music’s very best, including Pink Sweat$, Zara Larrson, Julia Michaels, Wiz Khalifa, The Jonas Brothers and more while racking up dozens of sync placements in his young career including Queen Sugar, All Rise, All American, Good Trouble, and Hair Love. After a successful release of his debut Therapy EP in October which saw close to 1M streams globally, Otis Kane continues to build momentum, being recognized as one of the hottest emerging R&B talents in the country. Otis will be unveiling an exciting follow-up EP, filled with new collaborations, which is currently slated for a February release.

Joe Otis is a Valparaiso High School icon. Whether in the classroom, on the basketball court, or just in passing through the hallways, Otis seems to impact the lives of all who interact with him.

I first met Otis my freshman year. I had him second hour as my world history teacher. I quickly came to realize that the tall man with the black, thick-rimmed glasses standing at the front of the class room and spitting out historical facts like water at the splash pad at the Central Park Plaza would soon become a man who have I admired as an educator for all of my time at the high school. I was fortunate enough to be able to land this week’s Valpo Life in the Spotlight gig with Mr. Otis. We met in his classroom after school to discuss his recent move to the head coaching position of the varsity girls’ basketball team, teaching, and life in general.

Born the eldest of three sons to a Hungarian Immigrant, Otis has been a teacher and coach at La Porte High School as well as Valparaiso High School. He is also a husband and father as well. Otis received his undergraduate degree at Northwestern University and his Masters at Valparaiso University. Each day, he arrives at school at about seven o'clock in the morning where he will read his paper(s) and brush up on current events to discuss with his classes.

"I always like to introduce the day's history lesson with something fairly recent, and to try to make it relevant to what we're studying," Otis said.

His unique style of teaching is well known throughout the school, and anytime a student mentions his name the conversation immediately swings to what he read in the papers that day. As a former student I always found myself enjoying his reads through a conglomeration of news sources to broaden his students’ world view and to form a palpable link from our world to the past.

"I have one world history class, current events, and three foreign policy classes in addition to a study hall. My day keeps me pretty busy, and by the time that its all done I'm already preparing the next days lesson or working on girl's basketball," he said.

Yet, Otis's labors do not exclusively pertain to the classroom. His hard work is witnessed in many areas, particularly near the bench on the basketball court. With over twenty-one years of head coaching experience, anyone who has been to Valparaiso High School Boys basketball game can tell you Otis never seems bored with what is happening on the court.

Coaching through good times and bad, Otis’s passion for the game and the teams which he coaches never wanes. When asked about his move from coaching Varsity Boys at La Porte to Valpo, and now to Valpo's Varsity Girls team, Otis said that it has been many things.

"Everybody dreams of coaching at their old high school, but because of a long succession of coaches that just didn't seem to be in the cards for me," Otis said.

Until four years ago when the job for Head Coach was reopened and Otis leapt at the chance to return to the Viking Nation. Otis calls the move "A dream come true". Upon his return home Otis was reunited with former team-mate and the principal at the time Mr. James Doane.

Otis said, "It's been great. I love being back here and I look forward to coming to school."

Yet, Otis says it never really occurred to him to become the girls coach until the job opened up last year even though he had coached the La Porte girls for the last five years before coming to Valpo.

"I had fun doing it before, and I'm sure I'll have fun doing it again. I'm looking forward to the challenge," Otis said.

Being a native of the "Vale of Paradise", Otis has a few things to say when it comes to his favorite things about Valparaiso.

"Growing up here, there were so many people who did things for me out of the goodness of their hearts just because. It’s just a great place to grow up. I always had great teachers at Valparaiso High School, teachers who made it possible for me to go to a college like Northwestern University, and I hope that I have some of the qualities of those people," Otis said humbly, his brows furrowed in thought and recollection.

Otis's fond memories of the service others have given him throughout his life have rubbed off upon his own actions as well. Otis's thoughts on serving one's community are strong.

Before becoming a teacher and coach at La Porte High School in 1980, Otis was an assistant coach at Valparaiso University and was in Kiwanis. Otis says that when you are in such a type of club you gain a sense of how important such service projects are to the community you live in, and how necessary it is to give back to the community. He says it has always been something he has enjoyed, as well as living in such a vibrant community.

"I feel the University has a lot to do with that too, I feel that it is just one of the many things that makes a place like Valparaiso so special," Otis said.

Yet preceding his desire to educate and coach, Otis went to Valparaiso University with the intention to become a lawyer. The summer after his freshman year at Northwestern, Otis worked as a park director for the Valpo Parks Department when they had open playgrounds and summer programs at Tower Park. He said that everyday at lunch Jack Campbell, the current baseball and girl's basketball coach at Chesterton would have lunch with him while he worked at the nearby railroads.

Otis said, "He was the one who said I should get a teaching certificate on the side of the law degree, and that I would make a good teacher."

Otis said he had never really thought about the career path of education then. While he did say that he enjoyed working with the kids

"Making pot-holders is one thing, compared to what I'm doing now though," Otis chuckled. "But it's funny now because afterword I looked into what it would take me to do that, and how. And I wonder if we would even be having this conversation if I hadn't."

Luckily for Valparaiso and La Porte student that he did though. While the irony is that one of his children is now a lawyer in La Porte.

Overall though, Otis says the favorite parts of his job are the students and athletes.

Now at 61, Otis is one of the oldest teachers at the school and says that, "They keep me young. In fact, if you love it and work at it, being around kids will keep you young forever."

When it is all said and done Otis said, "I have no regrets."

Saying he has no doubts now that the boys team will be in capable hands and that he intends on coaching the girls for at least five years.

It can easily be said that there won’t be anyone clamoring for Otis to decide to retire earlier than those five years. Over the four years that I have had the privilege of knowing him, Mr. Otis has been one of the most open minded, hard working role models for myself and other students alike at the high school. I am a verbose person, but to describe Joe Otis in his entirety would be far too difficult. In essence he is a "good guy" by every means; a "good guy" who I am lucky to have known.

L.A.’s Otis College Raises $1 Million with Designer-Mentored Student Fashion Show

“When you’ve been in the business for 20 years you become jaded, and when you’re with a student, it’s about being creative,” fashion designer David Meister said at a fundraiser on Saturday for L.A.’s Otis College of Art and Design.

Meister — whose celebrity clients include Fergie, Tina Fey and Drew Barrymore — is one of many designers who gathered at the Beverly Hilton Saturday night, along with the school’s young, bright, up-and-comers, for a fundraiser to benefit Otis scholarship funds (86% of Otis students receive and require scholarships and financial aid). The scholarship benefit and fashion show featured designs of Otis students who were mentored for the event by established fashion designers.

Among the mentors were Ame Austin (for Max Studio), Christina Kim (for Dosa), Meister, Isabel and Ruben Toledo (for Lane Bryant), Todd Oldham, Robert Tuggle (for Eddie Bauer) and Rod Beattie of Bleu. Austin, Tuggle and Beattie are all Otis alumni.

Designers helped with design selections and fittings. The value of their guidance is undeniable. Still, Meister maintains, “I get way more out of it from the students.”

The benefit also lauded a handful of established designers: Michael Egeck received the Creative Vision Award, Leon Max received the Design Legend Award and the Toledos received the Design Innovation Award.

After awards were handed out, the lights dimmed and young designers put their works on display. Looks ranged from fluorescent swimsuits designed for a Barbie Malibu beach party (thanks to Mattel) to colorful, structured pieces inspired by Mexican architect Luis Barragán (thanks to Max Studio) to reinterpreted iconic dances from the 20th century such as the tango, go-go, disco and swing (Western Company).

“Students gave a tech treatment to the fashion they were creating, and they really went to town,” Isabel Toledo said. The designer, who created Michelle Obama‘s shift and matching coat for the 2009 inauguration, was impressed with the students’ ability to turn these tech-infused pieces into something beautiful and couture.

The Toledos have been working with Otis for about 15 years. Ruben, a prolific illustrator inside and outside of the fashion industry, designed the artwork, “The Spirit of Otis Fashion,” custom-made for this year’s event. The work was on sale at the silent auction along with a number of other artworks, accessories and the fashion designs made by students.

In her opening address, MGM Studios’ svp television business and legal affairs Shelley Reid, chair of the 2014 Scholarship Benefit Committee, noted that the event began 32 years ago as a boxed supper at the Hard Rock Hotel. Saturday’s event saw 700-plus guests in Beverly Hills and raised nearly one million dollars for the scholarship fund.
