A GUMBO grant (Granting Unserved Municipalities Broadband Options) was awarded to Optimum, the company formerly known as Suddenlink.The grant allows the rollout of more locations to receive better access. On Thursday, Sept. 15, the residents of Woodworth heard the plan of how that one-million-dollar grant will be used. One thousand locations are being addressed for this wave of help for Rapides Parish.Residen...

WOODWORTH LA. (KALB) - Certain areas in Rapides Parish are set to expand access for reliable high-speed internet. A GUMBO grant (Granting Unserved Municipalities Broadband Options) was awarded to Optimum, the company formerly known as Suddenlink.

The grant allows the rollout of more locations to receive better access. On Thursday, Sept. 15, the residents of Woodworth heard the plan of how that one-million-dollar grant will be used. One thousand locations are being addressed for this wave of help for Rapides Parish.

Residents in places like Alexandria, Boyce and Hineston can also expect to be included in the expansion. Nearly 1.5 million people across Louisiana currently do not have access to high-speed broadband internet due to affordability, literacy or a device problem. Veneeth Iyengar is the executive director of Connect Louisiana, and he fully expects to start bridging that gap within the next year.

“In the next 12 months, Optimum says they are going to start building in 1,015 locations in the Woodworth area, and in Sabine Parish, it was over 3,000 locations,” Iyengar said. “So, they have committed to building in those locations in the 12-month period and to build high-speed fiber optic connectivity to the location, whether small businesses or households. So we’re going to hold them to it through our grant agreement that they are going to build in 12 months, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

The total cost of the project is 4.3 million dollars, with 70 percent of the funds being provided by Optimum.

The goal is to get the project done in the next year. It is a move Woodworth Mayor David Butler said will be big for the town.

“It’s one of the greatest things to come to Woodworth, and the future of Woodworth and the way we growing, it’s just a must with our schools,” Mayor Butler said. “We got a bank coming. We got all kinds of businesses coming. It’s just a must. People are moving out here. We got 14 homes under construction. We got to move forward and get it done. We are going to be a whole lot better off a year from now than we are now.”

In total, Louisiana received more than 26 million dollars in GUMBO grant funds. This is just one of several projects in the pipeline to provide better internet:

"The community members that share our love for Inglewood Unified and the LA area make a big difference for the kiddos that walk through our gates, generation after generation," said Stuart Caldwell, Woodworth-Monroe Academy Principal. "We are just so blessed and lucky to have such wonderful partnerships with the LA Rams, City Year AmeriCorps and UNIFY. We have a 68-year history here and the kids who have seen the building as it was for many generations now see so many people bringing such positive energy to put into some beautiful markers on the walls. This is the kind of stuff that touches our hearts."

Rams cornerback David Long Jr. , Legend Chris Draft, mascot Rampage and volunteers painted murals on campus walls to inspire students as they transition back to in-person learning following the pandemic.

"There's a quote, 'The highest human act is to inspire,' and I think that's really important because you can be inspired in a variety of ways," said Long. "It doesn't just have to be through football. It can be simple like knowing the Rams are here, back in the schools. That can inspire someone to go above and beyond."

With service at the heart of both organizations, the Rams and UNIFY Financial Credit Union have continuously collaborated on ways to make a positive difference in the Los Angeles community through initiatives including local outreach events and joint Staff Days of Service. As part of the Rams' commitment to addressing educational inequities, the organization has funded City Year student success teams throughout the school year at Grape Street Elementary in Watts and Crozier Middle School in Inglewood. The Rams-funded student success teams are City Year AmeriCorps members who serve as tutors, mentors and role models that assist students and support teachers. The offensive MVP for the Desert Valley League is La Quinta senior star Tatiana Woodworth. The talented scorer rewrote the Blackhawks' record books during her four-year career and this season she eclipsed the school's assist and goals scored record.

She helped lead the Blackhawks to the semifinals in the CIF-SS tournament, which ties the farthest the team has ever advanced. She will continue her soccer career in college at University of Toledo.

Xavier Prep sophomore Dalton Kramer earned the league's defensive player of the year award.

The coach of the year was awarded to Jayme Macknicki of La Quinta. It was a nice honor to bestow upon the coach who had to leave mid-season for maternity leave. Her coaching and preparation helped the team achieve its goals including a DVL title with an 11-0-1 record.

Joining Woodworth and Kramer on the first team is an uber-talented group.

La Quinta seniors Alexis Garcia, Marci Gallo and Hannah Mendoza, junior Monica Calderon and senior goalkeeper Nicole Maler represented the Blackhawks. Maler set the school record for shutouts at 31.

Cathedral City senior star Azalea Guanajuato, who eclipsed 100 career goals for her career is on the first team along with junior teammate Alejandra Fernandez.

Three Palm Desert Aztecs made the first team and all three are juniors: Kaitlin Clapinski, Kaci Holliday and Andrea Soto.

Xavier Prep's Kaylee McClellan pulled off the rare feat of making the first team as a freshman.

Coachella Valley and Rancho Mirage tied for first in the De Anza League, so it's no surprise they dominated the first team list. However, it was the Arabs who swept the big awards.

The league's offensive MVP is Mariah Godinez, the star forward who broke the school's all-time scoring record during the course of her senior season, helping the Arabs reach the semifinals, the farthest they've advanced in school history.

The defensive MVP is her Arab teammate Adrianna Moreno, and the top goalkeeper was awarded to Coachella Valley's Melanie Ramirez.

Good news for the rest of the league is that all three stars are seniors.

Joining those three on the first team for the Arabs are senior Brianda Rios-Felix, juniors Miranda Torres and Daniela Iniguez, and sophomore Eva Lupita Torres.

The Rattlers had four first-teamers, including seniors Victoria Relerford and Jaidah Martin, and sophomores Caitlin Estrin and Briana Luna.

Fabiana Zavala, a junior from Desert Mirage, and Jennifer Joya a senior from Desert Hot Springs also made the first team.

High desert stars Jacqueline Bolha and McKenna Larson of Yucca Valley and Emma Yeager of Twentynine Palms round out the first team.

Rams, UNIFY, and City Year L.A. Beautify Woodworth-Monroe Academy

Even during the offseason, the reigning champions are ready to champion the youth in Inglewood. Rams cornerback David Long Jr. and his girlfriend Bryce Bakewell along with Rams legend Chris Draft was among the volunteers who painted pictures and encouraging words on the walls of the campus.

Along with painting symbols relating to STEM, arts, and athletics, volunteers painted quotes of prominent figures including Dr. Martin Luther King, former president Barack Obama, and vice president Kamala Harris.

Woodworth-Monroe principal Stuart Caldwell noted how the school has a 68-year legacy and how some of the teachers and staff attended the school during their formative years.

“The kids have seen the building as it was for a lot of generations and now to see so many people bringing such positive energy to put some beautiful markers up on the walls to say “hey, welcome, this is who you are,”” Caldwell said. “This is the kind of stuff that touches our hearts.”

Caldwell believes that the students will feel inspired from knowing that a Super Bowl champion helped spruce up their school and this partnership will help parents feel the connection between the school and the Rams.

UNIFY Financial Credit Union executive vice president, chief marketing officer Lisa Otomo worked on a mural of Rosa Parks.

“With the kids coming back to school after spending all that time at home with COVID, I think it’s nice that they’re gonna have all these beautiful walls with all these nice sayings,” Otomo said. “It really is refreshing; I think it’s going to rejuvenate them.”

CYLA has an ongoing partnership with the Rams that provides services to schools and address social injustices that the students face. The organization provides AmeriCorps members to the schools they serve, who mentor and tutor the kids while assisting the faculty. The AmeriCorps members distributed paint to the volunteers throughout the event.

CYLA executive director Sandra Cano mentioned how having Long Jr and Draft at the campus beautification was “incredible.”

“I was actually watching David Long Jr. from afar and just the humility that he demonstrates as he’s going along … from where I’m at I could see him actually painting an image,” Cano said. “Just him being a Super Bowl Champion sitting in this location painting with everyone else.”

During the Rams’ wildcard game against the Arizona Cardinals, Long Jr committed a pick-six edging up the score 21-0 in the second quarter.

“[Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray] was rushing, trying to throw the ball and I was kinda anticipating where the ball was gonna land,” Long Jr said. “By the time I realized I secured the catch, I was already in the endzone, so it was a wave of emotions.”

Draft learned that some of the volunteers that worked on the Barack Obama mural were students at Woodworth-Monroe when he was in office. The volunteer that worked on the Kamala Harris painting was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority inc.

“It’s one of her sorority members and as a Black woman, she’s able to paint that, be a part of a sorority but then also reflect on how powerful is that for some young women who are walking in here for them to see this quote,” Draft said. “This is an event that’s tied with getting kids back to the schools and really uplifting them and encouraging them.”

Theodore Roosevelt Anderson Jr. was born August 24, 1930 in Woodworth, LA. He was the fourth of seven children born to the union of the late Theodore R. Anderson Sr. and Bessie (Green) Anderson.

As a young man, Ted worked on the Louisiana Railroad laying tracks. He was later drafted to the US Army and served in the Korean War. After returning home to Woodworth, LA, he later decided he would leave Woodworth to pursue work elsewhere and he told of how he flipped a coin deciding whether he should travel to Seattle, WA or California. Ted's fate led him to Seattle where he later attended Edison Technical College and received his certification to become a welder and also met his soon to be wife. In 1957, Ted was joined in holy matrimony to Evelyn Foucha in her hometown of New Orleans, LA. This union brought forth three children, Lloyd, Keith and Lisa Anderson. Ted was a dutiful husband and father and was very proud of his family and his work accomplishments.

Ted's work was interesting as a Boilermaker of Local Union 502. His work led him through a successful career as a welder taking him to various places across the United States. He worked at various companies including Boeing, Lockheed, Todd Shipyard, Chicago Bridge and Iron, Hanford Nuclear Plant, Satsop Nuclear Plant, Chief Joseph Dam, the Alaska Pipeline and the Honolulu Shipyard. In addition, Ted taught his trade of welding at Bellevue Community College.

Ted attended CME church with his parents and accepted Christ at an early age. He joined Maranatha Adventist Church where he attended bible studies and was later baptized by Pastor Byron Dulan in 1994.

He was well known to family and friends as Ted, Jr., Dad, and Papa. Ted was an early bird who enjoyed the outdoors and loved to work in his garden. Ted never met a stranger and would strike up conversations with people he would meet and discuss history, world politics and share life experiences. Ted enjoyed reading encyclopedias, studying geography and sharing his vast knowledge of these subjects.

Ted was a role model to not only his own children, but all of the neighborhood friends and families as he instilled morals, values, honesty and work ethic in us all. He possessed a dry sense of humor and was quick to laugh at his own jokes.

Ted, Jr., Dad, Papa, you will be greatly missed! Ted was preceded in death by son, Lloyd P. Anderson, his father, Theodore R. Anderson Sr., his mother, Bessie (Green) Anderson; brothers Leon E. Anderson and Louis D. Anderson; and sisters, Doris L Beardon and Erma Jordan.

He leaves to cherish his memories, wife Evelyn Anderson, son, Keith A. Anderson, daughter Lisa G. Anderson, grandchildren, Keicee A. Anderson, Simonne Anderson Foucha, Mariah G. Warrick Anderson, Darianna A. Anderson, great granddaughter, Aniyah Northern. Sister, Bernice Griffin and brother, Elijah T. Anderson as well as a host of relatives and friends.
