A Louisville native and graduate of Seneca High School, Coffey played for the NAIA national championship team in 2018-19, the first of his two All-America seasons.
Coffey named national tournament most valuable player after a double-double of 10 points and 16 rebounds in the title game against Carroll (Montana).
He was NAIA, NABC and Mid-South Conference player of the year in 2020, and Georgetown was the No. 1 overall seed with a chance to go back-to-back when the tournament was canceled due to the onset of the pandemic.
At the time of the cancellation, Coffey was averaging 15.4 points and 12.7 rebounds per game while shooting 63.9 percent from the field.
A 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward who went undrafted in the states, Coffey has played six professional seasons for six different teams internationally.
Coffey started that journey with Ventspils of the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League in 2021. He moved on to Mitteldeutscher Basketball Club of Germany in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) for 2022.
He spent the next three seasons with a trio of Greek teams, Kolossos Rodou (2023), Promitheas Patras (2024) and Peristeri (2025). In the third season, Coffey led the Greek Basketball League with 7.5 rebounds per game.
This past season, Coffey played for Konyaspor of the Turkish Basketball First League.
Coffey was a three-time all-MSC selection. He finished his Georgetown career with 1,579 points, placing him No. 20 on the Tigers’ all-time list.
His career totals of 137 blocked shots and 1,274 rank third and fourth, respectively, in school history.
Coffey grabbed 24 rebounds in a game his senior year against Ohio-Eastern, tied for GC’s seventh highest all-time in a single contest. He blocked seven shots in the same game, tied for fifth best.
Of the 10 players on La Familia’s roster, Coffey is the only one who did not play NCAA Division I basketball.
The team is led by numerous University of Kentucky alumni, including Willie Cauley-Stein, Andrew Harrison, Archie Goodwin, Marcus Lee, Deandre Liggins and Kahlil Whitney.
Sean McNeil (West Virginia, Ohio State), Darrell Morsell (Maryland) and James Mainor-Bell (Villanova) also are in the La Familia ranks.
They are coached by another UK product, Jon Hood.
There are 16 teams stretched across two brackets in the annual tournament. Eight in the “alumni” bracket strongly represent Louisville (The Ville), Hall In (Seton Hall), Boeheim’s Army (Syracuse), JHK Hoops (Kansas), Purple Reign (Kansas State), Aftershocks (Wichita State) and The Enchantment (New Mexico).
This year’s tournament doubles the winner’s share from the traditional $1 million of the past.
Alumni bracket games are held on college campuses across the country, while the non-alumni bracket will be held in Las Vegas.
The tournament tipped Saturday with a marquee matchup between Kentucky and Louisville at noon at Memorial Coliseum. La Familia held off The Ville, 72-68. Coffey scored three points and collected a team-high eight rebounds in 37 minutes, also the highest number on the roster.
Game two is 7 p.m. Monday at Freedom Hall. If necessary, the deciding game is back at Memorial Coliseum, 6 p.m. Wednesday.
La Familia enters its third season with a 6-2 record in TBT, including a semifinal appearance in 2024.
The Ville’s roster includes 10 former U of L players — Russ Smth, Trey Lewis, Montrezl Harrell, David Johnson, Ray Spalding, Malik Williams, Jae Withers, Angel Nunez, Jaylen Johnson and Chris Jones — as well as Elizabethtown native Alex Matthews, who played at University of Texas Permian Basin.
Coach for the Louisville alumni is Michael Baffour. One of his assistants, Chace Recktenwald, was director of basketball administration and a men’s basketball assistant at Georgetown this past season.
