CHENEYVILLE, La. (KALB) - In March, voters in Rapides Parish will decide its next Mayor of Cheneyville.
Ronny Green, Jr. (I) is one of two candidates running for the seat. This comes after current Mayor Derrick Johnson announced he would not seek re-election.
Green began serving as an alderman for Cheneyville in 2021.
If elected, Green hopes to bring more resources to the town, including support for elderly residents and the youth.
His campaign slogan is “Public Service Over Politics.” Green said the slogan is a message of engagement, involvement and inclusion amongst all citizens in Cheneyville. He prides himself on being efficient, believes he is capable of producing desired results and said he has not made any empty promises to voters on the campaign trail.
Green will be running against his colleague, Alderman Francis Mitchell (D).
Here is our full interview with Green:
So, for voters who don’t know who Ronnie Green Jr. is, what do you describe yourself as?
“Well, I’m a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a friend, a neighbor of the great big metropolis that I like to call the Town of Cheneyville, and overall, a good vibes guy. I’ve had the privilege of serving as a councilman since 2021. I’m a graduate of the Southern University Agricultural Mechanical College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the greatest historically Black college university in the nation. In my professional career, I pride myself on being efficient, and whether that’s meeting deadlines or achieving goals, I think I’m capable of and have shown myself to be capable of producing desired results. I carry the same work ethic and attitude over to my career as a public servant, which has brought us here today for me to ask for the citizens of the Town of Cheneyville to elect me as the next mayor on March 29.”
With your experience as a councilman, why do you believe you are qualified to be in this position?
“As my campaign slogan alludes to, ‘Public Service Over Politics.’ As I’ve been out on the campaign trail and speaking with the residents here in town, I haven’t made any empty promises, only promise to serve this community to the best of my abilities while giving maximum effort and being able to meet the needs and make sure that the communities and the community’s best interest are always at the forefront and top of mind, as the next mayor of this town.”
So why should voters elect you to be the next mayor of Cheneyville?
“I plan to continue waving the flag for this place where I live and that I love so dearly. And what that means is knocking on doors, getting in rooms, sitting at tables and having conversations and being a mouthpiece and being a voice to this community because we need resources. There are resources for the elderly of our community, for them to be able to enjoy a specific quality of life. We need resources for our roads and our water systems and our infrastructure so that we can make sure in times of crisis we are still able to provide those services to our residents. We need resources around arts, athletics and academics, because we have a talented group of individuals in our town, the youth, that we need to be able to highlight, that we need to be able to build up and pour into, so that we can foster those relationships. We need resources so that our trash pickup and our debris pickup are satisfactory for the citizens here in our town. I think that I want to continue to be able to do the work that goes into making sure we have all opportunities to exhaust those resources.”
Your message to voters and to those who are looking to either vote you in or not. What is your message to them?
“Well, I want to first say thank you to all the supporters for their kind words and encouragement as I’ve been out campaigning. I want to thank them for that. I would ask that they turn those words into action and show up to the polls on March 29 to elect me to be the next mayor of this town. My main message with public service and public politics is a message of engagement, involvement and inclusion amongst all citizens here in town. And there’s a story that I haven’t told too many times, whenever we were awarded the Louisiana Economic Development for outstanding improvements in the community and community improvement. They wanted some pictures of our playground that we had made improvements to and I sent that picture in. But while I was out there cleaning up that for those pictures, there was a group of kids out there just kind of playing and doing their thing or whatnot. I was out there maybe five or ten minutes and about that time, a couple of them started picking up some trash and putting some trash in a trash bag. A couple more came and started putting trash in a trash bag. And I overheard one of the kids say, ‘This is what community is all about.’ That stuck with me because I said, ‘This is just the work and being an agent of change that goes into doing what you have to do and being an example so that people can follow behind it and take the lead’. That’s the role I’d like to play as being the next mayor here in the Town of Cheneyville.”
