CHENEYVILLE, La. (KALB) - On October 12, a dinner plate benefit was held for Veda Reshelle Franks.
Franks’s sister, Trinese Williams, said Franks is currently battling stage three breast and lung cancer.
“My sister’s been in it fighting and I’m trusting in god to have her for many more years fighting and I’m gonna be with her here to fight," Williams said.
Williams said when her sister was diagnosed, the feeling she got was all too familiar.
“To hear her say that, it was unbelievable,” said Williams. “Because I lost my daughter with it, and it’s hard, I wouldn’t wish this on anybody.”
Her daughter, Elbony Williams, was first diagnosed with breast cancer at 26. She said Elbony fought the disease and went into remission. Unfortunately, Elbony’s cancer came back, this time in her bones.
She passed away May 21, 2023, at the age of 30. Williams now takes care of Elbony’s only child, Imani. Although shaken by the loss of her child, Williams said she has faith her sister will pull through.
“I am a firm believer in God. So whenever God says it’s over, it’s over. But I’m not worried about Man...I believe her odds are good," Williams said.
The Cheneyville community came together to help ease the burden of Frank’s medical bills.
Williams said her sister needs $1,000 to help with co-pays for medical procedures as she continues to battle the disease.
The benefit featured BBQ plates and a raffle. According to one of the organizers everything was donated. Williams says she’s grateful for the community’s support.
“During the week I’ve been having anxiety attacks about this, here, because I didn’t know how it was gonna turn out. But I said to myself it’s all about God and my cousin constance said it’s whatever God want’s it to be. And when I tell you it was an outpour, it was an outpour and I thank God for everybody that was here."
The benefit followed a breast cancer walk and balloon release where Williams' family and friends honored their loved ones who passed away from the disease, as well as those who are currently battling it.
Williams said her hope is that people take their health seriously.
“Give yourself exams go, to the doctor for your yearly checkups. My thing is go. Nothing is too small, nothing is too little. Go and get yourself checked,” Williams said.
