COLFAX, La. (KALB) - Some residents living in Colfax have shared that their roads have gotten so bad that it is becoming dangerous to drive. They claim that what was supposed to be a road improvement project has only made things worse.

Neighbors said a contracted company was hired by the town to fix several streets. But according to them, once crews found multiple water and gas leaks underneath the roads, they stopped working and left the job unfinished.

Now, people in the area are saying they’re left driving through dirt, dust and deep manholes that make travel rough and unsafe.

“Nobody wants to be held accountable around here. Nobody wants to make anybody be held accountable around here, and it’s enough,” said Shannon Jewell, a Colfax resident.

Jewell said the poor road conditions are damaging vehicles and creating safety concerns for children in the area.

“Our roads are torn up. People’s vehicles are getting torn up. We have manholes that have been left open… kids were playing down in there, which is very dangerous,” she said. “Honestly, just the safety of the roads and the town altogether is out the door.”

Residents said they’ve reached out to town officials several times but haven’t seen any progress.

“We need help. We need somebody that can actually help us, to listen to us. We’re not being heard,” Jewell added.

Another resident, Myra Fretty, who drives a school bus, said the poor road conditions are also affecting students.

“It’s hard for us to get around some streets,” Fretty said. “Kids are standing outside in the mornings, and the dust makes it hard for them. They’re getting dirty before they even get to school.”

When KALB stopped by Colfax Town Hall, staff said someone was in training about road issues and that either the mayor or the town’s attorney would return our call.

After a long hiatus, the historic La Vista Motel on East Colfax Avenue is open once again, brought back to life under the direction of Denver developer Nathan Beal.

Originally built in 1956 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the motel has been fully restored to evoke the style and spirit of 1960s Colfax.

The motel will host a grand opening from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, featuring food trucks and live DJs.

“We are thrilled to welcome guests to La Vista Motel,” Beal said.

“Our goal was to create a space that honors the past while delivering a completely unique and modern experience. We like to say, ‘A little bit motel. A whole lot of mood.’ We can’t wait for the community and travelers to experience the restoration.”

?The motel’s 23 guest rooms are now available to book and feature self-entry and self-check-in.

Each room is decorated with original artwork and vintage-inspired furniture, equipped with a mini fridge, TV and free Wi-Fi. Room options range from a king suite with a kitchenette to a single queen.

Opening alongside the motel at ?5500 E. Colfax Ave. is El Piñon, a coffee shop and cocktail bar located on site. It will serve locally roasted Servant Coffee, along with craft cocktails, beer, an extensive wine program and bubbly on tap.

Operated by Weston Scott, founder of Denver’s Ephemeral Rotating Taproom, El Piñon also offers access to Grandma’s Basement, a downstairs space designed to resemble a 1960s-era basement.

The area can be reserved for private events or meetings, or used as a workspace for guests.

The coffee shop and bar is open from 7 ? a.m. to 9 ? p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 7 ? a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Beal purchased the motel in 2022 for $1.82 million, according to city property records, and construction began last year.

The motel’s interiors, including all guest rooms and El Piñon, were designed by Melissa Friday of Xan Creative, known for her work on Snooze, Ginger Pig and Steuben’s.

Friday’s design blends retro-inspired elements with modern comfort, using salvaged pieces from antique stores and resellers throughout Denver.

That same attention to preserving character guided the exterior restoration by Sopher Sparn Architects, who maintained the building’s original charm. The restoration is complemented by a mural by Denver artist Emma Friday.

The motel’s neon sign was restored by Morry’s Neon, a Denver business with over 30 years of experience,.

At El Piñon, guests can also take advantage of Grandma’s Basement, a downstairs space decorated to evoke the nostalgia of a 1960s basement, available to book for private events and meetings or as a quiet place to work and enjoy a morning coffee.

La Vista Motel will host its grand opening celebration on Friday, December 6, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The all-day event will include food trucks, live DJs in Grandma’s Basement, and additional programming to be announced next week. The celebration is open to the community.

COLFAX, La. (KALB) - A longtime community advocate in Colfax is ready to take her service to the next level.

Timika Hamilton-Price, who has served as an alderwoman since 2019, has announced her candidacy for mayor of Colfax.

Garland Brossette is the current mayor, though it remains unclear if he plans to seek re-election.

Since joining the council, Hamilton-Price has been an advocate for Colfax children, hosting events and activities to give them something positive to do locally.

She said her time in office has prepared her to step into a leadership role and continue pushing the town forward.

“Having done what I’ve done since 2019 and being an advocate for the people, I just feel it’s my time to step up, take the reins, if possible, and help get the people what they need,” she said. “I think we’re headed in the right direction. It is a slow process, but understanding that they’re willing to work with me, I’m willing to work with them, as well as the council, we’re all willing to work together to meet the needs of our community.”

Hamilton-Price said she’s been researching ways to improve infrastructure and long-term stability in Colfax.

“I seek out other small municipalities like ours that’ve faced the same issues,” she said. “I do a lot of research, reaching out to see how they maintain their systems and bringing those ideas back home. Once we get things straight, we can move forward without these ongoing problems.”

If elected mayor, Hamilton-Price said she wants to help Colfax grow and thrive through new commerce and business development. When asked about the current state of the town’s business community, Hamilton-Price spoke candidly about her deep roots in Colfax and her motivation to make a difference.

“I feel sad because I’m born and raised here, a die-hard person from Colfax,” she said. “All my family’s here, both sides, mother and father. So, growing up, Colfax is just not what it used to be. I moved back in 2016 after the untimely death of my mother. So, moving back and realizing what was here and what was going on, I thought nothing better than me to step in because I can be like everybody else, we don’t have anything, we’re not doing anything. Well, I needed to jump into action and be able to help,” Hamilton-Price said.

Hamilton-Price said the town will soon become a member of the Grant Parish Chamber of Commerce, a move she hopes will attract new business and investment to Colfax.

The election for the mayor of Colfax is set for May 16, 2026.
