Mike Evans Finds the End Zone in 49ers Debut
WR Mike Evans made an immediate impact in his first regular season game in red and gold, emerging as one of QB Brock Purdy's go-to targets in the 49ers season opener.
After hauling in five receptions for 47 yards in the first half, Evans added a touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter. Purdy connected with the veteran wideout for a two-yard touchdown, marking Evans' first touchdown as a member of the 49ers and extended San Francisco's lead to 17-7.
Evans finished his 49ers debut with six receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown on seven targets.
"Mike's been great," head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "Today was my first time doing it with him... It was nice to be able to have a type of receiver to throw a fade to like that at Red Zone."
"Brock threw a great ball," Evans said on his touchdown. "We actually repped that a lot the last couple of weeks, so I was happy it paid off."
Purdy Spreads the Ball Around in Three-Touchdown Performance
Purdy opened his 2026 campaign by finding three different receivers for touchdowns in the 49ers win.
San Francisco's first trip to the end zone came late in the second quarter when Purdy found WR Demarcus Robinson for a 39-yard touchdown. The score capped a nine-play, 86-yard drive, and sent the 49ers into halftime with a 10-7 lead.
Following his two-yard scoring connection with Evans in the third quarter, Purdy added his third touchdown on a 99-yard drive. Purdy threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to WR Deebo Samuel Sr. which extended the lead to 24-7.
Purdy finished the night 25-of-34 for 205 yards and three touchdowns
49ers Defense Stands Tall in Australia
San Francisco's defense delivered, holding Los Angeles to just seven points and kept the Rams off the scoreboard through the last three quarters.
One of the game's biggest stands came late in the third quarter. The Rams made their way to fourth-and-goal from the 1. QB Matthew Stafford tried to run it in himself, but the 49ers defensive front held its ground, with DL Osa Odighizuwa credited with the stop to force a turnover on downs.
LB Fred Warner helped lead the defensive effort in his return to regular-season action after missing time in 2025 due to an ankle injury. Early in the fourth quarter, Warner forced Rams TE Tyler Higbee to fumble, and DL Keion White recovered the ball. The fumble led to a 56-yard field goal from K Eddy Piñeiro that pushed San Francisco's lead to 27-7.
Warner's return to the field also came with a place in the 49ers record books. He entered Week 1 needing two tackles to tie Pro Football Hall of Fame LB Patrick Willis' franchise record of 950 career tackles. With his performance against the Rams (5 solo, 6 assists, and 11 combined), Warner passed Willis to become the 49ers all-time leader in career tackles.
Shanahan reflected on Warner's impact following the win.
"Fred means everything to me," Shanahan said. "I don't want to coach very much when Fred's not around... He is one of the most impressive people I've been around."
McCaffrey and Black Power 49ers Ground Game
The 49ers leaned on a one-two punch of RB Christian McCaffrey and rookie RB Kaelon Black to keep the offense moving throughout the game.
McCaffrey found his stride coming out of halftime, putting together two consecutive runs of 14 and 16 yards in the opening possession. Those gains helped set up Evans' touchdown.
Black also saw a lot of action behind McCaffrey in his NFL regular season debut. The rookie carried the ball 14 times for 65 yards, while McCaffrey finished with 68 yards on 10 carries.
San Francisco finished with 174 rushing yards.
Green Comes Up With First Takeaway of the Season
CB Renardo Green delivered the 49ers first interception of the 2026 season in the second quarter. On third-and-10, Green intercepted Stafford on a deep ball intended for WR Puka Nacua at the 49ers 14-yard line.
The interception ended the Rams possession that had reached San Francisco territory and helped the 49ers defense hold Stafford to just four completions on 11 attempts in the first half.
"It was huge for Renardo," Shanahan said. "Renardo had such a good training camp, he's had such a good off season starting back to Phase 1 and OTAS."
Offensive Line Holds Up Against Rams
The 49ers offensive line faced a good test in Week 1 and kept Purdy clean throughout the night.
Purdy was not sacked on any of his 34 pass attempts, giving the quarterback time to complete passes to eight different receivers and throw three touchdowns.
The work up front also helped San Francisco have 174 rushing yards, with McCaffrey, Black, and Purdy all contributing in the run game,
"They (O-Line) did an unbelievable job," Shanahan said. "The long ball to D-Rob (Robinson) that was huge. I think we took a seven-step drop... Which normally I would never expect to get that first half pass rush. So it was a hell of a job by the protection by the whole line."

Evans, 34, comes from a wealthy San Diego hotel family and stood by Holmes as her blood-testing startup Theranos collapsed and she was convicted in 2022 of defrauding investors. The couple has two children, 5-year-old son William and 3-year-old daughter Invicta. With Holmes serving an 11-year federal prison sentence in Texas, Evans is raising their children while pursuing a new biotech venture of his own.
In the film — warning: spoilers ahead — Evans comes across as controlling and increasingly volatile, taking over from Holmes as she whisks eggs, interrupting an interview to demand that the cameras be turned off and at one point casually brushing his teeth while standing stark naked in the shower, with Fielder awkwardly looking on. He speaks of Holmes dedicating her life to building “monuments of love” to him, and in one heated confrontation threatens to ruin the lives of people he believes have wronged her. “I’ve got vengeance in my heart,” he declares.
So who is Evans, how did he end up with one of Silicon Valley’s most infamous figures and what is he up to now?
Evans grew up in a wealthy, prominent San Diego family. His grandparents, William and Anne Evans, founded Evans Hotels in 1953, opening what became the Bahia Resort Hotel on Mission Bay. The family business later expanded to include the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa and the Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla.
Evans attended Francis Parker School, an exclusive private school in San Diego, before graduating from MIT with a degree in economics in 2015. Despite his family’s wealth, Evans is neither an employee nor a shareholder of Evans Hotels, according to a statement the company issued Oct. 1.
His family reportedly had reservations about his relationship with Holmes at first. But his father, also named William, became a supporter — and even went undercover of sorts at her 2021 fraud trial. According to NPR, the elder Evans showed up for jury selection under the name “Hanson,” introducing himself to reporters as a concerned citizen who fixed up old cars for a living. His expensive loafers and a Starbucks cup bearing a different name eventually raised suspicions.
The two met Oct. 7, 2017, at a Fleet Week party hosted by a venture capitalist in San Francisco, according to Evans. Theranos was already engulfed in scandal, though Holmes had yet to be criminally charged.
In the documentary, Evans recalls that he initially didn’t recognize Holmes because she was wearing a floppy hat, dark sunglasses and a Band-Aid on her face from a scratch by her husky. He says he fell in love with her almost immediately. When Fielder points out that he could barely see her face, Evans replies, “I guess that wasn’t what mattered to me.”
Holmes says the attraction was mutual. The two became friends and started dating about six months later, just weeks before she was indicted on federal fraud charges.
Fielder asks Evans whether he worried early on that Holmes might be conning him. “100%,” Evans replies, before asking what she would have had to gain from him. “Well, isn’t your family rich?” Fielder asks.
Pressed about the family’s money, Evans grows visibly uncomfortable and cuts the conversation short, saying he needs to get to a cousin’s event.
Since Holmes entered federal prison in May 2023, Evans has been raising their two children in Austin, Texas, bringing them to visit her at the federal prison camp in Bryan. Holmes is expected to transfer to a halfway house outside Austin in August.
In an appearance last week on the tech podcast “All-In,” Evans described the difficulty of the experience. “It’s hard because I’m building a business and I’m trying to free my wife from federal prison and I’m raising two kids,” he said.
Though Evans routinely refers to Holmes as his wife, Holmes said in a 2025 interview from prison with People that they had not legally married: “Maybe we’ll get married someday, but our bond is more than a piece of paper.” The two got engaged in 2018, reportedly at a Taylor Swift concert.
After graduating from MIT, Evans reportedly attempted to launch a medical concierge service before working at companies including LinkedIn and Luminar Technologies, which developed lidar systems for autonomous vehicles.
In 2022, he founded Haemanthus, a biotech startup developing technology to analyze biological samples using lasers. The company hopes to make diagnostic testing cheaper and more accessible — a mission that may sound awfully familiar to anyone who followed the rise and fall of Theranos.
Haemanthus has reportedly raised millions of dollars but has yet to release a commercial product. Eric Potma, a UC Irvine chemistry professor who consults for the company, told Wired this week that its technology is worth exploring despite significant technical challenges. “The engineers at Haemanthus are legit,” he said.
Holmes’ name does not appear in Haemanthus’ incorporation documents, according to Wired. But in the documentary, the couple is shown discussing plans for a new diagnostic venture, with Evans speaking openly about his desire to revive her original ambitions.
“The idea is to put the band back together and do it all again,” Evans tells Fielder.
Evans and Holmes agreed to participate in the documentary in hopes of changing the public perception of her. Early in the film, Evans explains that they wanted to give the filmmakers extraordinary access to their daily lives, embracing what he calls “radical transparency.”
But Evans’ commitment to transparency had its limits. In the film, he repeatedly tries to shut down uncomfortable conversations and, in a meeting reenacted for the cameras, demands a share of the documentary’s profits — an arrangement Fielder fears could compromise the project’s integrity. Evans ultimately agreed to forgo payment.
At the documentary’s surprise premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in September, Fielder acknowledged that his relationship with Evans had deteriorated as the project unfolded.
“We felt Billy was trying to exert a lot of control over the process, and it sort of caused our communication to break down a little bit,” Fielder said during a Q&A after the screening. “The challenging thing is he’s sort of a conduit to her.”
Speaking on the “All-In” podcast before seeing the finished movie, Evans acknowledged that participating might turn out to be a mistake. “I haven’t seen it yet,” he said. “I might think this is like the dumbest thing I’ve ever done.”
Evans attended a private screening of the documentary on Oct. 16, followed by an off-the-record conversation with Bryan Johnson, the tech entrepreneur known for his elaborate efforts to reverse aging.
In a post on X the following day, Johnson called the film “a masterpiece” and described Evans as “magnanimous in conversation.” Though Johnson said he gave Evans every opportunity to defend himself and “strike back because Fielder roughed him up,” Evans declined.
Evans replied publicly, thanking Johnson for treating their conversation with care. “When the world is against you and the pain is so real,” Evans wrote, “it means so much to have people like you show such kindness.”

Watson signed his three-year $51 million deal, and he's been solid for the Rams, but he missed Week 4, and hasn't been as dominant for the Rams as Evans has been for the 49ers.
Evans signed a three-year $42 million deal, and has looked as great as he ever has with 24 catches, 300+ receiving yards and three touchdowns to go along with 5 wins. He's been everything the 49ers could've hoped for and more.
In defense of the Rams, they already had Puka Nacua and Davante Adams for 2026, and it was their defensive unit that they chose to retool over their offensive one. This made sense given the offense retained the bulk of its stars.
But with hindsight, perhaps Sean McVay and Les Snead should've considered adding Evans and unleashing what could've been a top offense with the depth to handle missing either Nacua or Adams with Evans in the fold.
Of course, Adams has been tremendous so far for L.A., but wouldn't the Rams be better with Evans also in the mix? It's a fair question.
The Rams weren't wrong adding Watson. No one should be saying that in the first year of his deal, but one can wonder if Evans would be doing more for the Rams and their ability to win football games than Watson?
It's fair to wonder with the power of hindsight if the Rams let one of the biggest free agent weapons of 2026 go to their division rival. And now it's fair to wonder if Evans will be helping the 49ers win the NFC West, while the Rams fight for a playoff spot.
Of course, in a few weeks we could be saying that Watson was absolutely the right move for L.A. Perhaps Evans never wanted to go to L.A. We're speculating here.
Call it hindsight, call it preference and or perception, but one could argue the Rams should've made more a push for Evans over Watson in 2026, whether that's actually true or not.
One could argue the Rams should've ignored Donald wanting to come out of retirement, and instead used his guaranteed money to try and lure Evans.
It's all fair speculation.
What's not speculation is the 49ers are 5-0 since signing Evans. The Rams are 2-2 since all their offseason signings. L.A. will look to rise to 3-2 on Monday Football against the Buffalo Bills or fall to 2-3.
Evans and the 49ers will be watching.

For Evans, that was the end in Los Angeles. Frank McCourt bought the team before the 2004 season and brought in his own people, as a new owner often does. The new general manager was Paul DePodesta, immortalized in “Moneyball” and promptly tagged by Times columnist T.J. Simers as “Google Boy.”
Evans figured he would get a second chance as a general manager. After 22 years, he is getting that chance, but with a twist: The team might never exist.
In the same year Evans left the Dodgers, the Expos left Montreal, traveling south to emerge as the Washington Nationals. If the guy trying to revive the Expos as an expansion team succeeds, Evans is his choice for president of baseball operations.
“I love the idea of trying to put together something from the beginning,” said Evans, 66. “I just think it would be a really wonderful place to call my final spot in baseball, to make a difference and bring a team back and set up a franchise for the next 20 years.”
After major league owners and players reach a new collective bargaining agreement, probably sometime next year, baseball is expected to invite bids for two expansion teams.
In Montreal, the civic leaders most likely to lead bid groups distanced themselves from baseball after the 2022 collapse of a shameful effort by the Tampa Bay Rays to secure a new Florida ballpark by pitching a team-share concept between Montreal and St. Petersburg, Fla. When the leverage play failed, major league owners ditched the two-city notion.
Into the breach stepped Ashkan Karbasfrooshan, a Montreal technology entrepreneur and founder of Watch Mojo, a pop culture brand with 26 million subscribers on YouTube. His net worth — he posted it on social media — is $250 million.
That’s nowhere close to what one would need to buy an expansion team, but it’s enough to start a conversation. And the sentiment in Montreal is much the same as it is in Los Angeles: Public funds should not be used to build professional sports venues.
“If we go out there and say we need a billion from taxpayers, it’s not going to go anywhere,” Karbasfrooshan said.
The average value of an MLB team today: $4 billion, according to CNBC. The projected fee for the coming NBA expansion team in Las Vegas: $7 billion to $10 billion. As baseball owners prepare for a lockout, in a push for the salary cap that would drive franchise values higher, insiders anticipate the MLB expansion fee could settle around or even above the $4 billion range.
Then, say, another $2.5 billion for a ballpark with a retractable roof, and billions more for the surrounding development: not just the usual restaurants and shops but also, according to a vision Karbasfooshan posted online, an immersive technology pavilion, an entrepreneurship academy, even a “live beer-making process tied to Montreal’s brewing heritage.”
So Karbasfrooshan has started the conversations, with old money and new money in Montreal, with corporations there and elsewhere, with private equity funds from all over — and with sports industry veterans who can tell him what he doesn’t know. He might end up with a small stake in the team, or none at all.
“I’m not coming at this like some kind of social dilettante billionaire who thinks he’s God’s gift,” he said. “I’m just a guy.
“I’m a nobody in many ways, but I’m a guy who built a world-class company and executes and fundraises and all that.”
Karbasfrooshan is optimistic he has generated enough interest to pull all that capital together, but he spoke this week with a sports investment banker in the hope of “turning that interest into commitments.” He has a former NFL executive interested in becoming president of business operations and has spoken with a former MLB executive about running stadium operations.
He has Evans too, although the person proposed to run baseball operations is pretty low on the list of priorities for MLB.
“They wouldn’t care if the capital wasn’t there,” Karbasfrooshan said. “But, if all factors are equal — if Salt Lake has capital and we have capital; if Raleigh has a stadium and we have a stadium — you can then show you have these people committed. In a way, it’s doing a bit of their due diligence.
“They’re going to maybe take you a little more seriously than if you’re just a guy making noise.”
For now, MLB is keeping an eye on him. Without billions in funding and a stadium site, the rest is flowery prose, but there is no sense in dismissing any potential bidder a year or two before the bidding opens.
Montreal boasts the largest market of any of the projected expansion contenders, with a rich history of baseball even beyond the Expos. After Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson to break the color barrier, he dispatched Robinson to the Dodgers’ triple-A team in Montreal.
The oft-cited lack of fan support for the Expos is largely a myth. It was the same playbook the Athletics ran in Oakland: trade away your best players and tell fans the ballpark is terrible, and then shrug and say the fans aren’t showing up. Montreal is a great sports town, with room to embrace a good ballclub.
Maybe Montreal does not get a team, or maybe Karbasfrooshan lands a billionaire who has someone else in mind to run baseball operations. Even if Evans does not get an opportunity to construct Version 2.0 of the Expos, life has been good since McCourt sent him packing.
For the next five years, Evans scouted for the Seattle Mariners.
“It kind of control-alt-deleted me and put me in a really good place,” he said.
Since then, lots of really good places: player agent; mentor in a sports management training program; Toronto Blue Jays front office; president of the board of directors of the Society for American Baseball Research; chief operating officer of the company that turned the Field of Dreams site from a movie set to a year-round tourist attraction.
“When your day is evaluated by thousands of people coming through on a daily basis, from all over the world, and they just want to enjoy it and play catch, it really improves your quality of life,” he said.
“It’s not winning and losing anymore, which was a bit of a shock to the system. But I actually won every day.”
That’s what the Dodgers do these days, just about every day of every year. They just tied the major league record for consecutive postseason appearances with 14.
In every one of those years, save for the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, they have won at least 90 games. They have come a long way from the days of McCourt, who took the team into bankruptcy.
“It’s remarkable,” Evans said. “For a lot of people, they don’t remember that Dodger franchise, because they see today’s. You and I know what it looked like, and it was embarrassing. What he did was ransack the team.”
Harsh, but the league said the same. In a bankruptcy court filing, MLB accused McCourt of “looting” $189 million in team revenue. (McCourt denied the allegations and said the league had approved the organizational restructuring that facilitated that accounting.)
Evans chuckles at the suggestion that today’s Dodgers are bad for the sport.
“Now, for a lot of people, the franchise is the scourge of baseball,” he said. “And, folks, if you only had a little memory.”

Retired cornerback and renowned trash-talker Richard Sherman, who played for both the Seahawks and 49ers during his 11-year career, gave Evans some high praise on X.
“Mike Evans Checking to see the name on the back of the Jersey is an all-time Gif and trash talk moment that I wish I would have thought of,” Sherman wrote.
Evans’ move was very similar to one from a 2019 viral clip in which Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews checked the back of then-career minor leaguer Scott Sabourin of the Ottawa Senators during a preseason game. (Sabourin would go on to play in 74 NHL games for four teams over seven seasons.)
But Evans, a six-time Pro Bowl player in his first season with San Francisco after 12 years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, told reporters after the game that he was just trying to figure out his vocal opponent‘s identity.
“I was blocking him until the whistle, and then he said something, like I’m doing extra, something like that,” said Evans, who finished with seven catches for 113 yards and one touchdown. “I didn’t know that was him at first, because I played against him a few times and we always been cool, you know? He was a good player. I honestly didn’t know it was him, because in the helmet, it’s hard to tell sometimes.
“And we were just talking trash, and I think I like pushed him and then I was like, ‘Who are you?’ And I looked to make sure. ‘Oh, it’s ... Diggs.’”
Hmmmm, Diggs was a good player? Maybe Evans is a trash-talking master after all.
