La Liga has hired a lip-reading service to investigate an incident between Jude Bellingham and Mason Greenwood, per the AP.
During a match on Thursday, Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham tackled the ball away from his fellow Englishman, Getafe forward Greenwood.
The cameras quickly cut to Bellingham, who seemed to utter an incendiary term in Greenwood’s direction: “Rapist.”
After the match, a 2-0 Madrid win, Getafe filed a complaint over the incident, which the Spanish top flight will now investigate.
Greenwood was arrested and suspended by Manchester United in January 2022, after a recording and images were released on social media of an alleged sexual attack.
The charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behavior eventually were dropped in February 2023 after the withdrawal of key witnesses, and new material coming to light.
The Athletic reported that United had originally planned on bringing Greenwood back for the 2023-24 season, but that reporting led to an outcry over the decision that eventually led to the 22-year-old being sent on loan to Getafe.
Strangely, there is some recent history between Bellingham and Greenwood as well.
In September, Getafe coach José Bordalás was forced to apologize after falsely claiming Bellingham had told Greenwood to move to La Liga.
“Greenwood has a friendship with Bellingham and he recommended that he come and play in the Spanish league,” Bordalás told Radio Marca.
Those remarks reportedly didn’t go down well with Bellingham’s camp, which forcefully pushed back against the narrative from Bordalás.
“I wanted to clear up a misunderstanding there has been. I said that Mason Greenwood came to Getafe because he had spoken to Bellingham,” the coach said in September.
“It has been clarified to me that this was not the case. I apologize. Mason arrived in a different way. It was our interest and they offered him to me and we were very interested. I just wanted to clarify that, it was not a bad intention.”
