Los Angeles-based architect Richard Keating, a veteran designer of tall buildings who spent 10 years in Houston during the 1970s and 1980s, was back in town this week to meet with a developer on a project being considered.

Keating wouldn't go into details, but he did talk about his latest local undertaking: Kirby Collection, a $125 million office, retail and residential development he designed for a tony stretch of Kirby Drive. The developer is expected to break ground this month.

Keating's local portfolio also includes downtown Houston's green glass-clad Wells Fargo Tower, San Felipe Plaza northwest of the Galleria, BP Plaza on the west side and the BMC Software headquarters. He designed renovations for downtown's CenterPoint Energy Plaza and One Shell Plaza.

Keating came to Houston in 1976 when he was tapped to open a local office for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Initially much of the work came from Houston developer Gerald Hines, but Keating grew the local practice to some 200 architects, engineers and interior designers.

After SOM's Houston operation closed amid the 1980s oil bust, Keating relocated to take the helm of the firm's Los Angeles office. In 1990, he went out on his own.

During his visit to Houston, he sat down with the Chronicle at downtown's Lancaster Hotel. Here are edited excerpts from that discussion.

Q: Describe the design philosophy of Kirby Collection.

A: When you add density (on Kirby) for an office or housing tower, you have to be careful because it's not like putting a tower in the middle of downtown or the Galleria that can easily take it. It's important that it's up there in the sky but doesn't come crashing down. The ellipse shape (of the residential tower) is very soft. It plays the light very carefully. It makes for a very interesting floor plan for the housing. It's really backing away from the edges. The office building is relatively small and faces the side street. It recedes in some ways. It has some humility to it and it doesn't intrude in the urban fabric of the neighborhood in a negative way.

Q: Do you see similarities between Houston and Los Angeles?

A: There are a whole bunch of cities that came into being after the automobile and those that came before. The latter ones are the urban, lovely to walk in, properly scaled streetscapes. Those created around the automobile - Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles - are a different animal because of the car. We're moving to a desire to be like those walkable cities.

The natural amenity that creates the value of certain cities, like the harbor of New York or the bay of San Francisco, it makes it a little easier for those cities to have charm. Houston and L.A. have been at their core about real estate and the value of the land. Take One Shell Plaza. The value of One Shell made the other buildings around it step it up. I think that's an important consideration and a nod to a quality developer.

Q: What's changed about Houston since you lived here?

A: The people that have always come to Houston, from the pre-A/C days to the current times, those people aren't the same people who went to LA. People went to LA because of the beach. They came to Houston to work hard. So that's why you have Gerry Hines and these oil entrepreneurs. There's an entrepreneurial culture that comes from thathistory. Those things haven't changed.

I think the only thing I've noticed that has changed is the traffic, obviously it's getting worse. And there was no significant high-rise housing when I lived here. If it builds around the bayou, it'll be lovely. All of a sudden you have a walkable city.

Q: Does anything concern you about the way the city is densifying?

A: The Gerry Hines effect on office buildings is very real, everybody knows about it. You can see it and it's provable. The excellence in architecture motif hasn't really made the transition to high-rise housing, and it can. At the end of the day, cities are made of what you see in the distance. If it's really good pieces of office buildings next to average or less than average housing, that would be hurtful to the future of the city that's been so successful in the past. I'd be conscious of that.

Q: What's your favorite building in Houston?

A: I go back to the Brochstein Pavilion (at Rice University) a lot. Rice, like Stanford, wants to be all brick and they're rigid about it. But that one building being in the middle, being the focal piece and being so pretty and so inviting for the kids to use. It's Jim Burnett's landscaping, it's Tom Phifer's architecture and it's a major underwriter who loves Rice University that got it all to happen. It's pretty cool. If it wasn't for Ray (Brochstein), that would be a brick building out in the middle of the grass.

Q: What concerns you today about architecture as an industry or as a profession?

A: Too much star architecture. Too much focus on star and not enough on the city. The city is what we have to focus on. It is the culture of man. It's what we leave behind, and if we don't get it right we haven't done a good job.

‘Deferred Action, the drama about DREAMers — the possibly two million young people brought to the US illegally by their parents – premiered at the Dallas Theater Center last year. Co-written by Cara Mia director David Lozano and Lee Trull, director of new play development at the DTC, ‘Deferred Action’ is now going on tour, thanks to a commission from SMU Meadows’ Ignite/Arts Dallas Initiative. The tour starts at SMU Sept 14, then goes to Denton, the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas, Houston and finally, the Encuentro de las Americas International Theatre Festival in LA.

Free Community Conversation will be held Sept. 16 to discuss the DREAM Act, immigration reform and Latinos in politics

DALLAS (SMU) — SMU Meadows School of the Arts’ Ignite/Arts Dallas initiative and the Cara Mía Theatre Co. are co-presenting a touring version of Deferred Action, the acclaimed play about immigration originally produced and premiered at Dallas Theater Center in 2016. The play will launch its tour in North Texas with four performances at the Meadows School’s Bob Hope Theatre, September 14-17, followed by appearances at the University of North Texas in Denton, the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas, Talento Bilingüe de Houston in Houston and the Encuentro de las Americas International Theatre Festival in Los Angeles. The touring production, the first ever undertaken by Cara Mía, was commissioned by Ignite/Arts Dallas and is sponsored by the Dallas-based Latino Center for Leadership Development.

The play’s central character is Javier Mejía, one of the immigrants known as DREAMers who arrived in the U.S. as an undocumented minor. Now, after years in the States, he finds himself caught in the tangle of existing immigration laws, new presidential policies and the harsh reality of living in the shadows. Javier hopes that temporary administrative mechanisms like Deferred Action will be the answer to his dilemma. But will hope be snatched away? Can politicians who say they are the Dreamers’ friends be trusted? Deferred Action follows the lives of those who dare to dream and the loopholes and dangers they face. The play was written by David Lozano, Cara Mía executive artistic director, and Lee Trull, Dallas Theater Center director of new play development. It will be directed by Lozano and feature Cara Mía actors and other local and national professional performers.

In addition, on Saturday, September 16 at 4:30 p.m., a free Community Conversation event will be held in the Bob Hope Theatre to discuss issues raised in the play. The event, sponsored by the Embrey Family Foundation, will feature a panel and open discussion with members of Cara Mía Theatre about the lives of DREAMers, immigration reform, and current national, state and local policies surrounding undocumented immigrants. Attendees are invited to stay afterward for a complimentary meal provided by Chipotle. Admission to the Community Conversation is free and no reservations are required.

Presenting touring works is one of the goals of Ignite/Arts Dallas, which launched at SMU Meadows in 2015 to integrate artistic practice and community engagement involving SMU, Dallas and the arts field at large.

“Under the leadership of David Lozano and Ariana Cook, Cara Mía has grown significantly as a local theater company over the last five years,” said Clyde Valentín, Ignite/Arts Dallas director. “This production of Deferred Action offers the company a unique chance to share their work across Texas and the country. Creating this opportunity for a local group of artists aligns with our goals to amplify work emerging from Dallas, which is increasingly being recognized as a vibrant cultural hub in its own right.”

At every step of the tour, Cara Mía Theatre will partner with the North Texas Dream Team (a nonprofit led by immigrant youth) and other local partners on community action programs to engage on issues surrounding the DREAM Act, immigration reform and Latinos in politics.

“My original vision for Cara Mía Theatre was to work with a core ensemble and create new plays that speak to the here and now of our city,” said director Lozano. “Who else could create necessary theatre for our immediate community other than the artists who live here? With this touring production, we hope to simultaneously provoke audiences through live theatre and inspire greater dialogue, understanding and civic action in partnership with regional collaborators. We are grateful to Ignite/Arts Dallas for making it possible.”

Deferred Action will be presented at the Bob Hope Theatre in the Meadows School’s Owen Arts Center, 6101 Bishop Blvd. on the SMU campus. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-16, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17. Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $8 for SMU students, faculty and staff, and are available online at caramiatheatre.org; tickets will also be available through the Cara Mía box office in the Hope Theatre lobby one hour before each performance. Few singers have had the power and presence of Whitney Houston. Her volcanic blast of a voice had a singular, cut-through-your-heart clarity. She was beautiful and beloved, a pop culture phenomenon and a hit machine.

As effervescent as her music could be, the memories are bittersweet. Her downward spiral into drug abuse led to her death in 2012 at age 48, drowning in a hotel bathtub.

Whitney, the new documentary from director Kevin Macdonald, reminds us of her joyous talents, but also takes an unflinching look at her undoing. It’s more bitter than sweet, less a celebration of her life and more of a lament.

Her family and friends are on hand to walk us through the tragic tale of “Nippy” as they called her. After a childhood shuttled between various temporary homes with her two brothers while her mother, Cissy, toured as a backup singer, Houston was devastated by her parents’ affairs and eventual divorce.

Her mother pushed her to develop her voice. In 1985, when she was 21, Houston’s self-titled debut album sold 22 million copies worldwide and spawned three No. 1 singles: How Will I Know, Saving All My Love for You and Greatest Love of All.

More megahits followed: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, So Emotional, Didn’t We Almost Have It All. Her Super Bowl rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner in 1991 remains a classic. I Will Always Love You, from The Bodyguard soundtrack in 1992, spent 14 weeks at No. 1.

Upper-stratosphere fame and adulation were followed by the inevitable backlash. She was criticized for not being “black enough.” The Rev. Al Sharpton dubbed her “Whitey Houston” and called for black people to boycott her records. Rumors spread that she was romantically involved with her best friend, Robyn Crawford, and she capped it all off by marrying bad boy Bobby Brown. She had a daughter (Bobbi Kristina, who also met a sad, tragic end at age 22) and apparently did a lot of drugs.

Hollywood and the music industry are littered with rags-to-riches-to-addiction-to-death stories. Such sagas come replete with hangers-on (in this case Houston’s brothers Michael and Gary), enablers and drug providers (the brothers again), corrupt managers (in this case her father, John).

Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, One Day in September) attempts to find out what kinds of demons Houston was battling.

In addition to her family, friends, managers, music collaborators and Bodyguard co-star Kevin Costner, we hear from music executives Clive Davis (who claimed to have “discovered” Houston) and L.A. Reid (who claimed to have known nothing about her drug problems). One of the most memorable moments comes from Brown. When he refuses to talk about his ex-wife’s drug use, the conversation quickly dries up.

There is a lot to unpack in Whitney, including a bombshell: the name of the older cousin who Houston claimed molested her as a child: Dee Dee Warwick. (Warwick, sister of singer Dionne Warwick, died in 2008.)

As compelling as Whitney can be at times, it’s also uneven. You get the headlines of Houston’s financial success and woes, but no hard facts. Much of what really happened in her life remains hearsay and speculation. Macdonald mixes clips of Houston’s singing with quick flashes of news footage from the era — It’s Ronald Reagan! It’s the space shuttle disaster! — but without any context. The clips seem gimmicky, like an unnecessary collage.

Where Macdonald does succeed is through his amazing access to the principals in Houston’s life. Seemingly everyone is on hand, with the stark exception of Crawford. Macdonald had the cooperation of the Whitney E. Houston Estate and access to stacks of home videos, which provide several unflattering behind-the-scenes glimpses of Houston and Brown.

There are also chilling and telling moments from the archival footage, such as Houston’s interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer in 2002. She was trying to make a positive PR comeback, and instead dropped her famous “crack is whack” quote, explaining “I make too much money to ever smoke crack.” When Sawyer asked which was the biggest devil — alcohol, marijuana, cocaine or pills — Houston said, “The biggest devil is me.”

Even with Macdonald’s research and parade of talking heads, there are questions about Houston and her demons that remain unanswered. Whitney scratches the surface and maybe that’s as deep as we’re going to get.

You Got Served is an American film written and directed by Chris Stokes. It was the ultimate dance film of the early oughts and was no doubt everyone’s favorite at some point. Not only was You Got Served a fan favorite, but it also racked up impressive numbers at the box office. In its first week, You Got Served went to number 1 on the box-office charts. It also grossed $16 million in the first week and made a total of $50 million on an $8 million budget. This makes it the rare kind of cult classic movie that also performed excellently at the box office.

The movie follows two friends who share a dream of opening a recording studio. However, to achieve this, they have to participate in their city’s dance contest. The duo faces some challenges but eventually wins. The movie celebrated its 17th anniversary on January 30, 2021. What better time to take a trip down memory lane to see what the film's cast is up to now.

9 Marques Houston

Marques Houston starred as Elgin Barrett Eugene Smith III, the leader of the Lil Saints in the film. He first broke out with the popular sitcom Sister Sister, and has been up to a lot since then. Houston has starred in several films over the years including Fat Albert, Somebody Help Me, and even the TV series, Cuts.

He also starred in and produced the UrbanflixTV series Howard High released in 2020. In addition to acting, Marques has also been up and about with his music career. Since You Got Served, Marques has released five studio albums which are all successful in their own right. The actor also enjoys a blissful family life with his wife Miya Dickey whom he married in August 2020.

8 Omarion

Omarion Ishmael Grandberry, popularly known as Omarion, is a 36-year-old American singer, songwriter, actor, and dancer. In You Got Served, the actor starred as David, the co-leader of the Lil Saints and Elgin’s best friend. After the film, Omarion’s music group B2K disbanded, leaving him no other choice than to go solo. In 2005, Omarion released his debut album O which earned him a Grammy nomination in the Best Contemporary R&B album category.

The talented singer has since released four more albums, bringing the total number of his studio albums to 5. His most recent album, The Kinection was released in October 2020 and is currently available on multiple streaming platforms. Since You Got Served, Omarion has also appeared in other films and shows including Fat Albert, Somebody Help Me, and The Proud Family. Apart from his successful entertainment career, the You Got Served alum is also a great father to two amazing kids, A'mei Kazuko Grandberry and Megaa Omari Grandberry.

7 RAZ-B

De'Mario Monte Thornton, otherwise known as Raz-B, starred as Vick, the leader of a rival crew, in You Got Served. The singer was a founding member of B2K alongside Omarion. However, in the past years, much of him has not been seen in the music scene as his last EP Boy 2 King: The Mixtape was released in 2010.

Outside of music, Raz B also seems to have a passion for helping sexual assault victims. He has in the past, accused Marques Houston of sexual abuse and is reportedly set to open up about it in an upcoming documentary. After You Got Served, Raz-B founded You Are The Light, a foundation that focuses on supporting and giving a voice to African-American male sexual abuse victims.

6 Lil' Fizz

Dreux Pierre Frederick, known by his stage name Lil’ Fizz, starred as Rashann in You Got Served. The 35-year-old is a rapper, and, like Omarion, he was formerly a member of the defunct B2K group. Following his appearance in You Got Served, Lil’ Fizz has made a name for himself in Hollywood, starring in reality shows like Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood and Marriage Boot: Hip Hop Edition. He has also released several singles over the years and is set to star in the upcoming reality series on VH1 Family Reunion: Love & Hip Hop Edition. Notably, Lil’ Fizz was once in a relationship with Apryl Jones, Omarion’s ex and the mother of with his two kids. Unsurprisingly, Omarion was not okay with the relationship but Lil’ Fizz recently apologized to Omarion for dating Apryl.

5 Meagan Good

40-year-old Meagan Good starred as Beautifull in You Got Served. In the years that followed, Good went on to appear in several hit movies like Think Like A Man, The Intruder, Stomp The Yard, Anchorman 2, Saw V, Shazam and many more. She also played the lead role in the NBC series Deception which lasted for only one season. In addition to that, the actress has appeared on television shows like Minority Report, Star and Prodigal Son. Away from her career achievements, Good enjoys a blissful marriage with bestselling author and Hollywood producer, Devon Franklin.

4 Jennifer Freeman

Jennifer Freeman starred as Liyah Smith, Elgin’s sister who ends up dating David, in the film. The 35-year-old actress rose to fame after playing the role of Claire Kyle in the popular sitcom, My Wife and Kids. Since You Got Served, Jennifer has featured in many films like True to the Game, Johnson Family Vacation, Jada, and most recently Beaus of Holly. She got married to Earl Watson in 2009, but the marriage was short-lived with Earl filing for divorce and accusing Freeman of attacking him. The talented actress also appeared on the popular B.E.T shows Real Husbands of Hollywood for several years.

3 Jarell Houston

Jarell “J-Boog” Houston, a 36-year-old actor and singer, will be remembered as Rico in the 2004 film. Like many of his co-stars, the talented actor was formerly a member of the defunct B2K music group. Ever since going solo, Jarell has released several studio albums and held multiple concerts. He also starred in movies like Step Up 2: The Streets in 2008 and Til Death Do Us Part in 2017.

Steve Harvey, 64, starred as Mr. Rad in You Got Served. In the years since the movie was released, Steve’s career has skyrocketed. Steve is a notable author, best known for his 2009 book Think Like A Man which was later adapted into a movie. He is set to host the upcoming comedy show, Judge Steve Harvey. He married his third wife, Marjorie, in 2007, and they've been together ever since.

She also hosted VH1 reality reunion shows and has since transitioned into acting. At the end of 2004, La La got engaged to NBA star Carmelo Anthony and married him in 2010. Their son, Kiyan, was born in 2007. Sadly, despite what seemed like a perfect union, La La and Carmelo are currently in the middle of a divorce.
