The International Arena at Wellington International welcomed horse-and-rider combinations back for jumper competition during the ESP Fall Finale, the third-to-last week of the ESP Fall Series. Held on Sunday as the showcase of the week, the $25,000 Wellington National Golf Club Grand Prix featured 23 entries representing an international field of 11 nations. Finishing with two horses in the top six, Scott Keach (AUS) was the big winner of the day, leading the class aboard Noble De La Chapelle, owned by Southern Cross Equestrian LLC.

“We bought him as a six-year-old. He is by For Passion D’Ive Z so his grandfather is For Pleasure. He is very true to the [Belgian Warmblood] breed, and as a nine-year-old now he is really laying a lot this year,” remarked Keach of his winning mount. “I was hoping that he would turn out to have a lot of scope, and I think it is starting to happen. If it keeps going this way then hopefully next year he will be a great horse. Maybe FEI next year.”

Course designer Andy Christiansen (ECU) put together a 16-effort track for the occasion, which saw eight pairs clear all the fences within the time-allowed during the first round to qualify for the jump-off. As the second-to-last to jump the course in the jump-off, Keach and Noble De La Chapelle were up against a leading time of 36.77 seconds, laid down by Gemma Paternoster (GBR) on Sher-al Farm Inc’s Ibalius SMH. Wasting no time around the pattern, the Australian duo managed to slice off over a second from the frontrunners’ time, crossing the finish line without faults in 35.40 seconds to jump to first place. When a rail came down for the final entry, the win was secured for Keach and Noble De La Chapelle.

“I think the courses were spot-on, and the results were good. We got the right number of clean rounds in the jump-off. The course was fair to the horses yet still had to be ridden. For my young horse, it was very good on my other eight-year-old; it was tough enough but also he finished well. I think the course was just right,” said Keach.

In response to the new stables at Wellington International, Keach stated, “The new barns are already awesome. I think everyone is excited about the improvements! It’s a win for everyone.”

Paternoster and Ibalius SMH finished in the runner-up position, and Angela Covert (CAN) claimed third place overall with her own Hollywood de Rase Z in a penalty-free time of 37 seconds flat. Keach also finished in sixth place with Cencorinue PS, owned by Kandor Farm LLC, as the final double-clear pair of the class.

Friday was the first day that horses and riders were able to compete in the International Arena, and the ring showcased the $10,000 Bainbridge Companies 1.40m Open Stake. A diverse field of 24 pairs competed over the 15-effort course, with Jad Dana (LEB) and After Eight, owned by Springhill Farm 1850 LLC, jumping to the top of the standings by a second-and-half. The duo topped the jump-off of eight partnerships with a time of 37.59 seconds as the quickest of four double-clear entries. Vanessa Hood (USA) and Take Two LLC’s Lou Lou VLS earned second place in 38.99 seconds, followed by Kevin Mealiff (IRL) aboard Oakland Ventures LLC’s David Guetta after crossing the finish line in 39.93 seconds.

Luis Fernando Larrazabal (VEN) and Leeann Ablin’s Baroness were successful in Saturday’s $5,000 SAS Equestrian 1.35m Open Stake, besting 21 other teams to claim the lion’s share of the prize money. The winning pair’s double-clear jump-off time was 33.90 seconds, which edged ahead of second-place finalists Dylan Daly (IRL) aboard Eye Candy Jupers’ Spitfire with a fault-free time of 34.11 seconds. Senan Hayes (USA) and Corlencia BC, owned by Windsor Show Stables, claimed the final podium spot without penalties in 35.94 seconds.

In the $2,500 Medium Amateur/Junior Jumper Classic presented by Palm Beach Equine Clinic, three pairs made it to the jump-off, and all three finished the class without faults, leaving the final rankings purely up to time. Crossing the timers way ahead of the other contenders with a final time of 33.83 seconds, John Angus (USA) and Sigma Stables LLC’s Best of L’Herbage captured victory. Clotilde Lewis (PAN) and her own Ever Star Du Cadran rode to second place in 38.21 seconds, trailed by third-place finishers Sydney Levy (JAM) on her own Dreamin Blue in 38.93 seconds.

What do you do when you’ve been around for 50 years? Celebrate! And on May 22, La Tercera Elementary School, which turned 50 this year, held a playground-sized anniversary party.

Although the school would not have turned down gold – the traditional gift for the momentous 50th anniversary – for La Tercera, there was a more valuable gift: Community.

“We learned during the pandemic how important schools are to the community, and also the extended role of the community school,” said Dan Noble, principal at La Tercera. “We serve not just the students, but the families.”

So, after two-and-a half long years without Cinco de Mayo, Oktoberfest, Open House, and even at times, without physical classrooms, La Tercera leaders decided it was time to party.

“Besides acknowledging 50 years of learning, we really wanted to create an opportunity to get the community together again,” Noble said. “The emphasis for us was really that this is a community event.”

As a neighborhood school, and the only STEM school in the Old Adobe Union School District, La Tercera has been a community hub since its inception.

“We have third-generation La Tercera students, Noble said, noting that many school graduates still live in the area. “It’s another aspect of being a neighborhood school,” he added.

And so on a beautiful afternoon in 80-degree weather, the La Tercera neighborhood gathered once again, albeit outside and still at a distance, for the first community event since the COVID lockdown in March 2020.

OAUSD Board President Patsy Knight, welcomed the crowd of grandparents, parents, students, teachers, friends, and family who came to eat treats and enjoy games supervised by Casa Grande High School student volunteers. Freshmen Rudy Gonzales, Gael Cruz, and Angel Mejia volunteered as part of their requirement for a class called Human Interaction. The class includes a Do-Good Project and requires 10 hours of service. The opportunity to help at a party appealed to them.

“It was something for the community,” said Mejia. “And little children having fun – it sounded great!”

The three high school students were supervised by Casa Grande teacher Lydia Janeska, who teaches special education and whose children attend La Tercera. For her, volunteering for the 50th anniversary party was an easy choice: “I love the community,” she said.

Other Casa Grande volunteers, Mariah Affonso, Hope Palmer, and Jasmine Sigmann, had the pleasure of giving prizes to children who found the golden eggs scattered throughout the playground. There were also Casa Grande students making popcorn, supervising craft and science projects, and ensuring kids playing on the jumbo Lego-like blocks did not get hurt.

Later in the day, when the sun reached its hottest, everyone welcomed the Kona Ice truck with its 17+ flavors of shaved ice. Ashley and Dustin, owners of Kona Ice of Central Santa Rosa, donated a portion of the day’s sales to La Tercera Elementary as part of its community support.

Noble declared the event a success and hopes it will be the first of many post-pandemic community events hosted by La Tercera.

A select group of films has qualified for Academy Award consideration after winning prizes at the 27th LA Shorts Film Festival, the longest-running shorts festival in the movie capital.

Nowhere, directed by L.A.-based filmmaker Gavin Hovannisian, won the Best of Fest Award at a ceremony Sunday night. In the 11-minute narrative short, set in the fictional city of Nowhere, the protagonists are shadows that “dream of a life without their human masters.”

Also qualifying for Oscar consideration was It Takes a Village…, winner of Best International Film. Director Ophelia Harutyunyan’s drama “tells the story of Mariam, who lives in an Armenian Village where there are no men. On her birthday, her hopes of a reunited family are shattered, when she must put aside her own crushed dreams and help her friend Anush as she embarks into motherhood.”

The Brave Locomotive, directed by Andrew Pierce Chesworth, won Best Animation. The Noble Guardian, from director Anna Coren, claimed the honor as Best Documentary. The winners in those four categories not only qualify for the Academy Awards, but for the BAFTAs (from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts), the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television ACCT Canadian Screen Awards, and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain Goya Awards.

More than five dozen LA Shorts filmmakers have earned Academy Award nominations, the festival notes, with 17 going on to win the Oscar. The festival screens over 500 films and attracts 10,000 attendees each year “including Hollywood industry professionals and emerging undiscovered independent filmmakers.” Screenings were held at L.A. LIVE Regal Cinemas in downtown Los Angeles and at the Laemmle NoHo Theatres in North Hollywood.

madrid-based rafael de la-hoz has revealed the visuals for his entry in the ‘noble quran oasis’ competition that represents the spiritual beliefs of islam. ‘if the aim is to celebrate the meaning of madinah and the importance of islam there is no better coherence than doing it through and for the quran. therefore, the identity of this cultural center should emanate directly from the quran. from the meaning of its lecture,’ de la-hoz said. soon after analyzing the text, the designer realized that there are no references to any particular architectural typology. as opposed going into detail describing any buildings or structures, the book lyrically paints pictures of gardens, fountains, and streams. for these reasons, the project works to create conditions for a holy oasis in al-madinah al-munawwarah, the capital of the religion’s culture, that grabs the attention of the city’s visitors.

the theoretical concept was taken from the sacred command that the book is to never touch the ground, but must be lifted and placed on a base. the belief has been abstracted and illustrated by roof element that embodies the holy pages of the quran resting on the four buildings which reflect the human hand.

the central plate of the enclosure reflects the core of the book seen in every version of today’s society. the calligraphy located at its heart is a hadeeth taken from prophet muhammad PBUH. additionally, an artistic approach of vectorizing the passage has been applied to the final decorated result. the focal point of the project allows occupants to connect with nature amongst the calmness of water and greenery where they may reflect upon all the lessons and knowledge taken from the different components of the space.

the rest of the site is protected under the shadows projected by the curved shape to provide a comfortable environment for pedestrians to walk around and celebrate different activities. the layout, landscape, and internal spaces have been designed to maximize interactions with the surroundings and highlight an inviting public building representative of islam.
