The fundamental idea behind the new Fred Segal store in West Hollywood is to take people on a “treasure hunt.”

“Really, almost everyone can find something,” John Frierson, president of Fred Segal, said. “Beyond that, it’s the fun of Fred Segal — to come in and hang out and have a good time and find joyful objects that you wouldn’t necessarily type into a search bar.”

The Fred Segal name has been synonymous with Los Angeles style since the early 1960s, originating a laid-back look at an upscale price point and becoming one of the first local boutiques to draw tourists, celebrities and the paparazzi. (Worldwide rights to the Fred Segal name were bought by the New York company Sandow Media in 2012, and none of the subsequent retail projects are affiliated with the two original, ivy-clad Fred Segal centers.)

Frierson and the vendors in the 13,000-square-foot Sunset Boulevard space, which opened in late September and joins Fred Segal boutiques in Japan and at Los Angeles International Airport, have been gearing up for the holidays by hosting a series of events. The festive list has included celebrity stylist Maeve Reilly with New Era Cap at a pop-up and an event co-hosted by Fred Segal, CB2 and Domino magazine to celebrate the opening of Domino’s holiday pop-up shop and Gwen Stefani’s new holiday album, “You Make It Feel Like Christmas.” (And yes, the singer was in attendance.) There was also a party for Los Angeles designer Ayler Young’s luxury bomber jacket line.

On an ongoing basis, Frierson said, the philosophy has been for the new Fred Segal to have “almost a treasure hunt kind of feeling.”

The store is set up as a series of smaller, interconnected boutiques in a manner that Frierson describes as “an interesting mix of multi-brand, specialty-curated shops.”

Merchandise covers menswear and women’s wear, children’s items, home decor, beauty and flowers. A customer can walk in and pick up an artistically crafted bouquet with Juniper Ridge products such as wild sage tea from Matriarch, non-toxic beauty products from Cap Beauty and home accessories from Tesoro, where everything is gift-wrapped. (But in this high-end air, it’s also possible to scoop up something for less than $20.) Recently, Fred Segal launched its own private label, Fred Segal Originals, a line of men’s and women’s clothes and accessories. (Current selections range from a $36 “Love One Another” canvas pouch to a men’s cashmere cardigan for $598.)

L.A. footwear designer George Esquivel selected Fred Segal as the spot for his first retail space, and has seen thriving demand for his signature $650 blue-denim mules.

“By nature, everything I do is limited edition,” Esquivel said. “The products are difficult to make so I do small runs of them. The mule happens to be the hot shoe for us.” (There is also an alligator version available by special order for about $3,000). In his section of the store, a wall of shoes makes selecting easy.

“It’s like a little find,” he said. “Someone can come in, see a shoe they like, and we can customize the color or the bow. We’re not trying to be fast-fashion.”

After the holiday shopping rush subsides, Frierson said the goal is to keep Fred Segal West Hollywood a relevant part of the local retail, restaurant and lifestyle scene. Fred Segal Café by Tartine is open adjacent to the retail space, while plans are underway for the arrival next year of Tesse, a restaurant by Bill Chait. Also slated to open next year at the Fred Segal site is a boutique boxing studio by New York-based Rumble.

“There’s something about bringing home a Fred Segal bag,” Frierson said. “It’s a brand that is imprinted in Los Angeles, now on one of the city’s most iconic streets. We want to lay the groundwork for the future of retail.”

The first time I traveled to Midway Atoll was 1996, a year before the U.S. Naval Air Facility closed. I was strapped into a tail-facing seat in the windowless belly of an Air Force cargo plane.

That blind descent in a backward position, after a long flight northwest from Honolulu into a part of the Pacific typically painted empty blue on maps, was my first experience of what I came to call “Midway syndrome.” The symptoms — odd but exhilarating dislocations of the time-space continuum — seem to occur regularly on this farthest-flung of Hawaiian landfalls.

Planes arrive at Midway after dark, when its legions of seabirds have settled in for the night, so I stepped down onto the runway in front of a huge hangar lighted up like a stage set, surrounded by primordial darkness. Huge anchors flanked the building’s portal. The hall inside was lined with 500-pound torpedo casings painted Easter-egg colors.

Moments later, my baggage and I were being ferried in a golf cart along a narrow road, and the dark fields on each side seethed with motion and echoed with strange sounds. Midway’s largest aboriginal population was at the height of its breeding season, and the cart’s headlights revealed them: a white sea of rooster-sized Laysan albatrosses, all engaged in a frenzy of socializing.

Once a military outpost, always an invaluable ark for wildlife, Midway will soon become a travel destination — with a few caveats, of course. As the most accessible part of the recently pronounced Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument, established in 2006 by President Bush, Midway is about to open the doors to a small-scale visitor program managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

The national monument stretches 1,200 miles northwest of the main Hawaiian Islands. Its astounding wealth of endemic land and sea species has earned it the moniker “Hawaiian Galpagos.” Most of the monument is underwater, a wilderness of some 4,500 acres of coral reef. A mere 6 square miles are islands and atolls, and most of these landfalls are crucial refuges for huge colonies of seabirds and endemic Hawaiian flora and fauna and will remain closed to the public.

Midway is the exception. In December, the Fish & Wildlife Service released a draft of a plan that, if all goes accordingly, will open the atoll to a small number of visitors in the fall. For the first year, the number of visitors will be limited to no more than 30 on the island at one time. The plan (which can be viewed at www.fws.gov/midway) calls for wildlife, history, kayaking and snorkeling tours, as well as self-guided trails.

What visitors might do in this tiny wonderland (2 square miles of land divided among three islets and 25 square miles of radiantly blue lagoon) will depend on their reasons for coming and the time of the year they visit.

Midway’s mainland residents — 18 species of seabirds — adhere to a seasonal schedule that allows their huge numbers (more than 2 million) to nest in a time-share fashion. Seabird enthusiasts will want to time their visits accordingly; a nature calendar will soon be available on the Midway website.

Not to be missed is the albatross breeding season. These gooney birds choose mates by dancing their way into each others’ hearts. (They mate for life, so you may want to reconsider those ballroom dancing lessons.) High-stepping their size-6 webbed feet through dozens of moves, they keep up a steady patter of whinnies, moos and percussive riffs of clattering bills. (Think the Super Bowl of macarena competitions.)

But I also enjoyed witnessing the love life of the great frigate bird. Known for practicing a brutish form of kleptoparasitism — chasing down boobies and tropicbirds as they fly home laden with fish and squid, bullying them into disgorging their catch and then swooping to catch the booty in midair — the frigate bird becomes downright suave when it really matters.

Perched in the branches of trees and shrubs, he inflates a red pouch under his chin into a heart-shaped balloon, shimmies his wings and emits passionate gargles whenever a female glides by.

Most of the atoll’s beaches are off-limits refuges for Hawaiian monk seals, but inland trails lead to viewing points where the highly endangered marine mammals can be glimpsed basking on the sand like fat odalisques.

Some of the atoll’s marine life can be seen from shore: green sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, pods of Midway’s resident spinner dolphins, even the occasional big ulua (a carnivorous fish in the jack family) cruising the shallows. Snorkeling and diving opportunities will depend on marine conditions, and although Midway’s reefs do not present the rainbow spectacle of corals usually found in the tropics, there are creatures here that have nearly vanished from the main Hawaiian Islands.

I was astounded by the big fellas. In shallow lagoon waters out by the edge of the fringing reef, I was thrilled (and unnerved) by a 60-pound ulua following me like an outsized puppy.

On one calm day, I snorkeled in water 60 feet deep outside the atoll. Enormous schools of jacks and chubs massed in tight vortices below me, suspended in crystalline blue. The spinner dolphins came round to look me over, and a couple of manta rays swam by, like huge, slow-moving birds.

Preserving Naval history

Most of the Navy buildings were torn down before the military departed, but the past still lingers among the colonial-style cable company buildings erected in 1903, now moldering among banyan roots, and the World War II-vintage commanding officer’s house, where President Nixon once met secretly with South Vietnam’s President Nguyen Van Thieu.

Memorials to the Battle of Midway and dozens of remaining battlements and buildings from that period are scattered among the later submarine base and Cold War spy station architecture. The atoll’s 1950s ambience, with its near-absence of cars, cellphones and locked doors, is pleasantly nostalgic but not cloying: The place is too clearly a work in progress.

The Fish & Wildlife Service has assumed the challenging task of preserving Midway’s military history and developing a visitor program while meeting its primary goal: to rehabilitate the atoll’s highly stressed ecosystem.

The problems most Pacific islands face are in evidence here: invasive nonnative flora and fauna that threaten a fragile ecosystem, pollution from past human activities, the pan-oceanic flotsam of abandoned nets and marine debris that can damage reefs and entangle wildlife.

As the most accessible of the northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Midway is destined to become a living laboratory for work in restoring island habitat. An experiment to augment the survival chances of the very rare Laysan duck by translocating a few individuals from their namesake island to Midway has produced bumper broods of ducklings.

The National Marine Fisheries Service has inaugurated a “head start” program to pen, fatten up and release monk seal pups weaned too early or otherwise deemed too thin to make it through the first critical year.

Visitors will be able to join ongoing projects to restore habitat at Midway. In the atoll’s tiny microcosm, volunteer work can be singularly rewarding. Efforts to control the spread of invasive weeds and to replant natives are already paying off.

Protected within the new monument will be rarities such as the Nihoa miller bird and the Laysan finch, found nowhere on Earth but on the tiny islands bearing those names.

At French Frigate Shoals, most of the adult green sea turtles in the entire archipelago convene to mate and nest. At Pearl and Hermes Reef and Neva Shoals, the coral reefs that may be the most pristine on the planet. Those places catapult you out of human time.

But at Midway, the human past provides a rich contrast to the pure elemental force of this pared-down paradise. One evening, after pondering at the dining facility the mystery of Midway’s tiny cemetery (of six marked graves, five indicate the occupants were doctors), I stepped outside, still mulling over that strange tidbit of Midway history ... and found myself swept into another dimension.

North Beach — possibly the most beautiful stretch of white sugar sand in all Hawaii — caught the shadows of swooping birds. Low cotton-candy clouds glided over the atoll, their undersides tinged azure by the reflected color of the lagoon, their tops just turning pink with the first colors of a 360-degree sunset. The wildlife around me simply went about its business and by doing so conveyed Midway’s greatest gift: the chance to stand, for a moment, in the peaceable kingdom.

FRIERSON, LA (WVUE) - Of all the animals you might expect to find in the forests of Louisiana, lions and tigers should not be on that list.

However, you will hear some unusual wild animal sounds coming from the woods near the town of Frierson, La.

A gravel lane in rural north Louisiana is usually quiet, until the neighbor's cats start to growl.

Jenny Senier is taking care of fourteen big cats. The lions, tigers, panthers, cougars and servals never had a chance to grow up in the wild. They will now live out their lives in an exotic cat sanctuary called 'Yogie and Friends.'

"They were all captive born animals. Once they've been imprinted with a human, there is no way that you can ever put them into the wild," said Senier.

Some of the big cats were house pets or a sideshow.

"They're pulled away from their mother when they are born and they're dragged around to do photo-ops with people that will pay to have their picture taken with them - which is really very stressful on them," said Senier.

The wild animals were the victims of people who wanted them as pets and then realized that a cute lion or tiger cub quickly grows into something they cannot handle.

"I hear people talk a lot," said Senier. "[They] say 'I'd love to have a pet tiger or I would love to have a pet lion. I just want to cuddle with them.' They're not cuddly. When they are looking and saying 'I want to get a pet, I can do it, I have 10 acres, I have the money, I can build for it.' - But you can't. Finally it is illegal in Louisiana."

Beautiful African servals ended up here when their owners divorced.

"They can jump straight up from a standstill more than 10-feet straight up," said Senier.

Senier has had as many as 21 big cats at Yogie and Friends. Now, they are down to just 14. The individuals who run the sanctuary hope that the need for this kind of facility will eventually go away.

Once a week, the gates are open to the public so people can learn more about the big cats and understand why a place like this shouldn't be needed.

"Why do you need all of these exotic animals when there are plenty of domestic animals that are used to humans and want to be around humans? These animals were not meant to be in this kind of environment," said Senier.

She said that zoos have their own breeding programs and do not want these large stray cats. So this sanctuary will tend to their needs, keeping the animals as stress free as possible and providing a peaceful home until the number of resident cats eventually drops to zero.

DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) - One man living in Denham Springs has lived nine lives... in the sense that he has worked in nearly every industry imaginable, but he has since devoted his life to raising queens.

“This one right here is kind of testy, so be careful with this one,” said Bobby Frierson.

Frierson has raised three boys and hundreds of thousands of queens... queen bees, that is.

“We have Italians, Cornelians, we have some Russian stock left. We have Redheads, we have all kind of bees.”

In fact, Frierson has turned a lifelong hobby into a commercial business. He and two of his sons now sell all types of honey products, but Frierson hasn’t always been in the honeybee business. His first “real” job was with his dad as an iron worker.

“I’ve worked in nuclear plants and pipelines and maintenance and construction and finally into fab shop and fabricated pipe for Exxon and different plants, and then all along the way though, I’ve always been a farmer or a gardener and a beekeeper.”

Eventually, he started a family and that’s when he realized he wanted to leave a legacy behind for them.

“So I figured if I could start some kind of business, I didn’t know what it was going to be, then I could pass it onto them when I’m gone and maybe they’ll have a better life than I did,” Frierson said.

Frierson taught his sons how to care for honeybees and together, they run Louisiana Gold Honey Farm.

“I raise all the queens now," said Joshua, one of Frierson’s sons.

Joshua grafts all of the bees and assists with the day-to-day operations, but he also has two little queens of his own, who Grandpa Bobby loves to dote on.

As a young man, Frierson dreamed of working for himself. It’s safe to say he has far surpassed that dream. Louisiana Gold Honey Farm does quite well. In the last year, they more than doubled their honey production. They say they can barely keep up with demand.

“It’s not money that I’m after, it’s just peace of mind. I want to be able to lay my head on my pillow at night and go to sleep without any worries, you know? And I have got there. I’m there. I don’t have to worry about too much," Frierson said.

Dreams bigger than he could have ever imagined have all come to sweet, golden fruition.
