Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Geyer.
Devon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin? I want to say it’s hard for me to say where my story began but that betrays the very clear chronology I find myself in. I was born in North Hollywood, CA son of a realtor and singer, my mom Erin Pohl, and my dad the professional songwriter and studio guitarist Stephen Geyer. Both their tastes had a profound impact on me, whether it was my dad listening to Dire Straits in the car or dancing with my mom to Jackson Browne or Van Morrison. All the angsty periods of my life came and went in a funny way; I wasn’t a punk but I loved folk punk. I wasn’t a rocker, more of a mod and a beat. These distinctions mean nothing anymore, like medals from a forgotten country. Time went on and I got a scholarship to Berklee College of Music at the age of 16 and my parents let me take my diploma test so halfway through junior year I left Conejo Valley for Boston. All the ancient stuff really fascinated me in college, Bach, traditional harmony, Gregorian chants, Carcassi etudes, and my buddy Alex and I were trying to find a way to marry the old, the modern and the new together with a band called Anymen. After that I landed in LA in 2011 and work was hard to come by. I took a touring gig the next year that had us going to every backwoods and desert county fair from San Diego to Washington. When it became clear that gig wasn’t worth the effort I fell back home and kind of lost track of time. I’d started working on some music that became a project called Decorations around this time, as well as producing some friends bands here and there. Decorations actually took on a little life of its own for a while. I was signing deals and flying to New York to play shows. It was exciting but ultimately draining. The shows were so high energy and intense it took about three days to recover each weekend. Eventually I met the love of my life on the comedown from all of that and for once I was just unconditionally happy. Love unlocked everything for me. I believe in the power of love. So here’s how it happened; I grew tired of playing loud music with synthesizers. Call me whatever you like but it always felt kind of hollow, and at best you could sort of mock that form through the song, but even still it was built into the texture of that whole era of music. My friends Burleigh Drummond and The Zmed Brothers had started a touring show called The Everly Brothers Experience and I jumped at the chance to focus on playing guitar as beautifully as Chet Atkins or Grady Martin or Don Rich. For ten years that was my life, I went to every state in the continental USA and got to play at some incredible historic venues along the way, meet people from all walks of life, sometimes in some very low down forgotten places, and I would even take Jess along sometimes to squeeze a vacation out of the tour. I kept writing that whole time, never really showing anyone except a few close friends. I’m still sitting on about ten years of music, maybe the last five are genuinely good, I just haven’t had the opportunity to record them like I want to. I’m working on that though. Five years ago my wife gave birth to our daughter and again love had a transformative effect on my entire life. Now I make music as much for myself and what I want to hear in the world as I do to show her that she can also follow her dreams and eke out a living doing what she loves like her dad. This year I opened up my studio and production company Orange Crate Recordings to the world and the results have been really encouraging. Every day I wake up and make music with people I love and respect. I’m just beyond blessed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? No, I had to literally build my studio, I became my dad’s parttime caretaker through 3 years of medical crises, once that was over my mom got rare cancer that scared the shit out of me, I have a daughter and I’m constantly worried about if I’m doing the right thing for her. Every one of them made me stronger though and I’m grateful for whatever grace has allowed me to overcome them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work? The way I do things is antiquated. I like to cowrite and help develop material like an arranger before hitting the red button. The best compliment I’ve ever got is about Verna Margaret’s “Paper Cut” when they said “I didn’t know they made records like this anymore”

Farming runs deep in my family. My grandfather, father and uncle helped establish our family’s strawberry operation in Salinas decades ago. What started with only a few acres has grown over time, but I still rely on their wisdom today. Some of the most important lessons I’ve learned have little to do with growing Strawberries.

Many of the families who work on our ranch have multiple generations employed here. Every clamshell of strawberries represents more than fruit. It represents dreams, opportunities and hardworking people whose efforts help strengthen our communities.
