A planned event space on the eastern outskirts of Danville in the Wood Ranch neighborhood is facing a hurdle at Tuesday’s planning commission meeting, in which commissioners, property owners and neighboring residents are set to weigh in on an appeal seeking to overturn the project’s administrative approval.
Property owners Jim Wood and Lisa Wood applied for a land use permit last year that would allow for the establishment of a small-scale event center on the 17.06-acre site at 2900 Camino Tassajara. The town notified neighboring residents of a pending administrative approval for the project in May.
“The proposal approval was made based on findings that the proposed use is consistent with the Danville 2030 General Plan policies supporting preservation of the site’s rural and agricultural character while allowing compatible low-intensity specialty commercial uses, such as an event venue,” Assistant Planner Jessica Lam wrote in a staff report for this week’s meeting.
Days after the appealable action letter was sent to 279 residents in the surrounding area, Kathleen Crosthwait, a neighboring resident across Camino Tassajara on Normandy Court, submitted a formal appeal on May 11 that was one of a total of 11 letters from other neighbors expressing concerns.
Crosthwait pointed to noise, traffic, public safety, property value impact and a “drain on city resources” as the concerns raised by the project, points that were reiterated in many of the subsequent letters asking the town to deny the project.
“The proposed venue would allow events with up to 250 attendees each,” fellow Normandy Court residents Debra Storey and Bill Storey wrote to the town on May 9. “Even with the stated conditions of approval, the scale and frequency of such gatherings are likely to create substantial impacts on nearby residents and surrounding roadways that have not been adequately addressed.”
Town staff disagreed with that assessment, pointing to the conditions of approval for the project as sufficient for mitigating many of those concerns and the Wood family pointing to their long history on the former ranch site and thoughtful planning for its future.
“Despite the fact that our property’s ‘highest and best use’ is high density housing, and even though we regularly receive legitimate and attractive offers for this use, we are choosing to pursue having it serve as a unique venue for special events,” Jim Wood and Lisa Wood wrote June 17. “We have spent years of research prior to submitting the land use permit application.”
The conditions of approval include a cap of 250 attendees, a 10 p.m. curfew for outdoor entertainment, prohibition of noise at a level that constitutes a nuisance to neighboring residents, traffic and parking requirements, and the maintenance and retention of existing landscaping along the eastern and southern property lines.
As part of their response to the appeal, the Wood family pointed to a wave of primarily positive feedback on the proposal that they announced on social media, with many of those sentiments echoed in a series of more than a dozen letters supporting the project that were sent to the town in recent weeks.
“The Ranch has received special designations in past Danville General Plans because of its unique qualities,” said local historian and retired San Ramon Valley elected official Beverly Lane in a July 1 letter to the town. “The Wood Ranch headquarters property possesses historical buildings which represent the early history of Danville and the San Ramon Valley, including its many ranch features and the Mendenhall/Wood house which is the oldest building in the Valley (1853).”
“It is important to our community to support efforts which would preserve the Ranch headquarters,” she continued. “Allowing a new use of the property would do just that.”
Since the meeting agenda was posted last week, the town received three additional letters opposing the project.
Ahead of the meeting, the planning commission gathered for a quorum to visit the site Thursday, in what was noticed as a special meeting by the town.

From Oct. 23-25, downtown Danville will become the home of the Flannel & Foliage Festival, which will offer fall activities, local merchant pop-ups, coffee and food, as well as photo ops with favorite actors from the fictional small-town Connecticut community of Stars Hollow.
General admission is free, but VIP tickets will be available. The festival, which will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, includes live music, trivia, scavenger hunts, autumn-themed artisan booths and screenings of “Gilmore Girls.” Ticket holders can attend live hosted panels and meet-and-greets featuring Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Sean Gunn, Emily Kuroda, Yanic Truesdale, Todd Lowe and John Cabrera.
The event so far has a waitlist of over 15,000 people, but capacity is expected to be capped at around 245 for the cast panels each day and around 1,500 for the photo ops, according to event organizer Ariana Arghandewal of Small Town Venture, which started as a social media account that highlighted small towns that resemble Stars Hollow. It now organizes events that bring “small-town charm, autumn nostalgia, and pop-culture fandoms to life,” she said in an email.
“We selected Danville because (of) its charming and walkable downtown, local merchant community, and proximity to major cities around the Bay Area,” she added.
While the TV show ran for seven seasons, from 2000 to 2007 on the WB and CW, it’s remained part of pop culture via streaming, and in 2016, Netflix produced a four-episode sequel miniseries, “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.”
The show is heavily associated with the fall season because of its depictions of the cozy fictional New England town, its use of warm autumnal colors and fall clothing, and plot points connected to the academic year, according to Reddit users.
Beyond the Danville festival, more Gilmore Girls nostalgia is on the way: A documentary by HBO about the hit show is reported to be in the works, and a book about the making of “Gilmore Girls,” by executive producer Amy Sherman-Palladino and star Lauren Graham, is set to be published in the fall of next year.

DANVILLE — It’s taken some time to get Harrison Park Golf Course back to tip-top shape after historic flooding in mid-August.
“It was was definitely the worst we have seen the course in quite a few years,” said A.J. Shannon, manager and golf professional at the course.
Shannon, who has been in his position since February 2024, isn’t sure exactly what year the course off West Voorhees Street last flooded, but said it had been a while.
Last month’s flooding forced the course to close for three days, Aug. 14-17.
When it reopened, it “was still so wet that we couldn’t let carts out right away,” Shannon said. “We only allowed walkers out to start with on the front 9 (holes). The back 9 always holds more water and takes longer to drain than the front.”
The course averages around 120 rounds a day through the week and 150 on the weekends. So, Shannon estimated they lost at least 540 rounds of golf over those four days, plus a few more when they only allowed walkers to play.
The staff also couldn’t get out to mow right away but had plenty of other course cleanup to take care of.
Shannon said cleanup started with two big oak trees that fell on the fourth hole.
“We then started to slowly go out and get the dryer parts of the course mowed day by day,” he said. “It wasn’t until (the following) Wednesday and Thursday that we could get a lot more mowing done.”
He added that after missing a few days of mowing, it’s difficult to catch up, as golf-course mowers are designed to cut the grass when it is just a little longer than normal.
Shannon said they had to use different mowers to gradually mow lower and lower until they got back to the normal cutting length.
Their first good day after the reopening was Aug. 19, he said. However, the city received more rain that made the next day bad for business.
“There isn’t much we can do currently to help with future flooding, but we do have plans this fall and winter that will help with drainage in the future,” Shannon said. “At the end of the day, that was a storm that we normally don’t see all that often, and water is a powerful force that all we can do is hope for the best and work hard cleaning up and fixing things afterwards.”
