INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) — The National Weather Service has confirmed two tornadoes on Saturday in Indiana, including a touchdown south of downtown Indianapolis, that pushed the state’s yearly total to a record 81.
Officials reported no injuries or deaths from either storm.
A weak EF-0 tornado happened at 5:20 p.m. Saturday near Madison and Southern avenues in Indianapolis. The storm stayed on the ground for two minutes, reaching peak winds of 76 mph and a width of 100 yards.
During its 0.2-mile path, the tornado uprooted a large tree and scattered limbs across the area. The storm damaged the siding of two houses and pushed a truck trailer into a parked truck. It also snapped several trees near Christel House South Academy before vanishing at 5:22 p.m.
Central Marion County was under a tornado warning for 30 minutes starting at 5:23 p.m.
A stronger EF-1 tornado happened from 6:32 p.m. and 6:43 p.m. Saturday in Dearborn and Franklin counties. With peak winds of 90 mph, the storm traveled 5.2 miles and reached a maximum width of 90 yards.
The storm first damaged roofs on farm buildings and overturned a large farm wagon along Batta Road near Lawrenceville. It then moved north-northeast, flattening crops and snapping several large trees near Legion Road. As it crossed Trackville Road, the tornado damaged garage doors before strengthening in southeast Franklin County. There, the storm damaged the roofs of houses and the walls of several barns.
Near the intersection of Saint Peters and Stone roads, the tornado destroyed three barns, damaged another house, and snapped pine and hardwood trees. The storm eventually ended about 2 miles southwest of Cedar Grove.
The state’s 81 tornadoes in 2026 are the most ever recorded in a single year since reliable record-keeping began in 1950.

INDIANAPOLIS — Purdue’s Guaranteed Work Experience (GWE) program is creating successful early connections between students and companies, especially those in Indianapolis. The results support the university’s primary mission for expanding to Indianapolis: industry opportunities for students who will populate the city’s future workforce.
Since joining the first class at the university’s expansion in Indianapolis two years ago, Purdue students are already seeing their college decision make a difference. Of Purdue students in Indianapolis in the GWE program who just completed their sophomore year, over 40% have already secured professional working experiences. That milestone — double the reported number of their peers in West Lafayette — signals a burgeoning career-support ecosystem in the capital city that has largely fed companies with headquarters or major divisions in central Indiana, like Rolls-Royce, Corteva, and Eli Lilly and Company, as well as rising startups.
“The overall success rate is a testament to the commitment to build a campus culture here in Indianapolis that leads with a career-readiness focus,” said Patrick Francis, director of career relations in Indianapolis. “Our students came here to get a head start on their future careers, so the ability to provide resources and the vision to get every student immediate access to professional development right down the street is paying off.”
Those early connections are key to improving job prospects for Boilermakers. The average rate nationally at which interns are extended a job offer and accept it after their internship (called the intern conversion rate) has risen to a five-year high of 63.1%, according to the 2026 Internship and Co-op Survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Since the introduction of additional structured preparation, Purdue students have also reported more than doubling their confidence in navigating job searches and succeeding in professional settings early in their college careers.
“In Indianapolis, Purdue is at the forefront of placement in internships and work experiences combining the university’s proven career preparation model with the unique advantages of an urban campus, where students have direct access to global headquarters, long-standing industry partners and growing entrepreneurship ecosystems,” said Joe Tort, managing director of the Office of Professional Practice in both West Lafayette and Indianapolis. “Purdue seamlessly combines academic excellence and career acceleration and industry connectivity for students in both locations, creating graduates who are exceptionally prepared to lead in an increasingly dynamic workforce.”
For its stellar efforts and years of success, Purdue once again ranked in the top 10 for internships and co-op programs, coming in at No. 3 among public universities and No. 6 overall in 2025, according to U.S. News & World Report. Pairing Purdue’s institutional strengths in creating work experience opportunities with its close proximity to an urban center — the university’s model in Indianapolis, which is designed to meet the career-focused needs of today’s students — has fueled higher placement numbers.
Through the Indianapolis Career Council, Boilermakers are pursuing work experiences, taking site visits and pursuing professional development coursework right when they get to campus, bucking the traditional internship timeline of starting as a junior, with some students getting multiple experiences well before their third year.
That list includes Masha Novoselova, a rising junior studying electrical engineering who was part of the GWE cohort of sophomores last year.
“Taking advantage of the opportunities to network and go to career fairs is what allowed me to get this internship at Glassboard — and I’ve learned so much there,” Novoselova said.
She was able to network with Grant Chapman, the CEO of Glassboard and a Purdue alumnus, in a first-year professional development course; complete an electrical engineering sophomore seminar, which provided further connection opportunities and resources; and start her internship while being a member of Indy Amplified, a summer professional enhancement program.
Chapman and other business leaders in Indianapolis also value the connections.
“Having Purdue right here in Indianapolis allows our business to connect with amazing local talent in our backyard as well as help us expand the number of interns we are able to host each year,” Chapman said. “These standout Boilermaker students are not just available for the summer. They are in our local community and enable us to continue the intern experience through the school year part time. This continued engagement not only provides the interns with more experience but significantly helps our business with continuity of programs.”

Inside a packed meeting room in downtown Indianapolis on Wednesday, the Metropolitan Development Commission approved a proposal to build a data center on Indianapolis’ east side.
Over the past few months, Georgia-based data center developer DC Blox has been pitching itself as a good neighbor to the Warren Township community, including Irvington.
But the community has stood largely opposed, with dozens of protestors congregating outside the City-County Building downtown. Many held signs and made t-shirts with slogans like “Block DC Blox,” “Stop the data center,” and simply “Nope.”
After the vote in the meeting room, some screamed at the commissioners and yelled obscenities. Irvington resident Mikey Hess criticized the commission, which is by the mayor and the City-County Council.
“It's very clear that this unelected committee does not have the community's best interests in mind,” Hess said. “We're dealing with people who think they can do whatever they want. They don't care about children because they don't live there. It's not their relatives. It's not their neighbors.”
Since the developer requested a use variance rather than a full rezoning petition, the commission’s approval is the final decision.
This comes just days after a City-County Council committee introduced draft language to through 2027 in Marion County.
DC Blox initially proposed a $2 billion data center campus. After pushback, DC Blox said it would build two buildings instead of three, with 25 fewer backup diesel generators and a larger buffer south of the Pennsy Trail.
The company said the project will be built in two phases — a one-story, 70,000-square-foot building expected to be completed within two years, followed by a two-story, 250,000-square-foot building roughly five years out.
Irvington Community School Board members largely made up the opposing comments — including board member Eric Serrano, who argued that even the scaled-down plan is not right for a plot of land so close to an elementary school.
“A smaller version of the wrong use in the wrong proceeding is still the wrong thing,” Serrano said.
The site of the proposed data center is on the border of two districts represented by two members of the City-County Council — Andy Nielsen and Michael-Paul Hart.
The councilors disagree on the development. Nielsen is against the proposal, largely based on the dissent from the community. In his comments at the meeting, Nielsen said that 83 percent of the respondents of a survey he put out to gauge community support said they were opposed to the data center.
But Councilor Michael-Paul Hart, who is supportive of the development, argued at the hearing that the developer will increase the city’s tax base, and provide funds for much-needed improvements to nearby infastructure.
City-County Councilor Jesse Brown also spoke at the hearing, asking the commission to approve a moratorium on data centers.
But Commission President John Dillon rejected the request, saying the commission would continue to wait for the amendment for a moratorium from the City-County Council.
