Greenwood registered 35 goals and 12 assists in 129 appearances across competitions for United before off-field issues brought his career to a halt in January 2022. The player initially left the Red Devils in the summer of 2023 to join Getafe on a season-long loan.
The Englishman was quite impressive in LaLiga, but it was not enough to force a change of heart at Old Trafford. United ultimately sold him to Marseille at the end of the season, with the player moving to France to get his career back on track.
Greenwood was an instant hit in his debut campaign in Ligue 1, registering 22 goals and six assists in 36 appearances. He ended as the league's top scorer, helping Marseille finish second in the league behind Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
The 24 year old hit a higher gear last season, scoring 26 goals and setting up 11 more in 45 appearances across competitions.
That prompted interest in his signature this summer, with Fenerbahce securing Greenwood's services. United have reportedly earned around £10-11 million from the deal due to a sell-on clause included in the player's contract.
The player has hit the ground running since moving to Turkey, registering four goals and two assists in nine games. However, he has now become embroiled in a fresh controversy and subsequently been sanctioned.
According to The Daily Mail, Greenwood has been handed a one-game suspended ban for his involvement in a brawl during Fenerbahce's 2-1 win over Lyon. The Turkish club defeated the Ligue 1 giants in a Champions League qualifier that saw both teams clash at the final whistle.
The incident was instigated by former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, while Greenwood also played a part. The report states: "At full-time, Guendouzi, who previously played for Lyon's arch-rivals Marseille, was at the centre of heated scenes as he sparked a wild brawl and appeared to be attacked by a member of the French side's coaching staff."

The new sports facility, a 95,000-square-foot building at 1627 St. Clare Way in Greenwood, will emphasize basketball, volleyball, baseball, and player development. It will feature seven basketball courts, four baseball tunnels and a 6,000-square-foot weight room.
The venture is led by owner and CEO Jonny Marlin, a former Indiana Wesleyan University basketball player who established the Greenwood-based Marlin Academy athletic training program in 2017.
“We want it to be a high-quality place where people can play basketball and volleyball, where people can gather, where we don’t have to drive an hour, hour-and-a-half to play games,” Marlin, a former basketball coach for Greenwood Christian Academy and 2011 Center Grove graduate, told the Daily Journal at the groundbreaking on Oct. 31, 2025.
Marlin Academy’s programs will roll into The Ark, which will offer training for multiple sports and host teams, leagues and tournaments, as well as space for community events. The Marlin Academy name will live on through the AAU teams based at The Ark.
The Ark’s basketball space will be able to accommodate up to 12 volleyball courts, allowing it to host mid-sized local and regional youth tournaments for both sports as well as offering recreational leagues, camps and clinics.
For baseball and softball players, The Ark will offer pitching and hitting development and batting and pitching cage rentals.
“A lot of the purpose and drive was for the impact that we hope and pray is going to happen here on the south side” from this project, Marlin told the Indianapolis Business Journal. “At the same time, we felt like we were at a place size-wise that we were hitting some limitations. … We just felt like this was the right time, and we had enough rallying behind us by a few people to make it happen.”
The Ark name is derived from the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. It joins Greenwood Sports Park — which opened in 2024 — as part of Johnson County’s push to generate more youth sports tourism.
Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers told the IBJ the city contributed $500,000 to the Ark project through its State Road 135 and southwest area tax-increment-financing district.
Compass Construction, an Indianapolis-based construction firm, was the general contractor for the project. CSO Architects was the design firm, and Bargersville-based Duke Commercial has served as the owner’s representative.

“The first 60 minutes, it was a tight game,” Greenwood coach Alfonso Lugo said. “They did a really good job closing down our space. They really didn’t give us an opportunity to create, especially in the final third. They were very patient. They were not pressing in our final third. They were just waiting for us to make a mistake or capitalize on a loose ball. But eventually we were able to find the spaces we were looking for. It took some tweaking of our formation and our style of play.”
Greenwood’s first score came courtesy of the long ball in the 60th minute. Will Thompson lifted a 60-yard free kick that somehow found Jackson on the right side of the box about 15 yards from goal. Jackson, between two Franklin defenders, put a touch on the ball and directed it into the right side of the net to give the Woodmen a 1-0 lead.
“We do this all the time,” Jackson said. “Our original play was to play the early ball, but we didn’t do that at all. So we got the free kick on the other side of the field, and we do this all the time because Will knows what to do with it and just placed it perfectly. It barely touched my back and went in.”
The backbreaker happened in the 77th minute when Sham connected on a penalty kick to the right side of the net to cap the scoring.
“It’s no secret we’re young and we’re building,” Franklin coach Trevor Perry said. “But you can have little lapses when you’re tired, and sometimes they don’t recognize positioning or realize they are out of position. It’s part of the game. Soccer will show its teeth. So even though we possessed the ball well and hung with them from a skill level and technical standpoint, we still lack that hunger to finish, and we’ll work on that as we move forward.”
Greenwood’s Brayden Reynolds finished with five saves. Franklin’s Griffin Ambs made three.
The Woodmen outshot the Cubs, 9-8, and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
“We did very well possessing the ball in the first half,” Franklin’s Liam Gallagher said. “We kind of fell apart in the second half. They took control after we were dominant in the first half. They started moving it like we did. It was a very back-and-forth game, with long and short balls. We had two get through. One because their striker is an athletic freak. The second was just an all-around mistake. We let a ball through and gave up a PK. But it was a very close game.”
Greenwood (2-0-2) will host Speedway in its first Hoosier Legends Conference match Thursday at 7 p.m.
Franklin (0-3-1) travels to Decatur Central for its Mid-State Conference opener at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
