YADKIN COUNTY, N.C. — A Triad Jeopardy champion's streak came to an end Thursday.
Lawrence "Skip" Long from East Bend in Yadkin County won three games in a row this week. He lost in the fourth round, unable to recover the lead after a Daily Double question about a book by the author of the Hunger Games series.
The answer -- who is Suzanne Collins. He said he got a lot of text messages about that one.
"As you watch me on the game, you can see my brain working, but I was also tired because it was the fourth show we taped that day and I knew it was the author of the Hunger Games but I just couldn't get there in time," Long said.
He filmed all four episodes in one day at the end of November and said it's a relief to finally be able to talk about it.
"Now everybody knows, and I can finally rejoin the present," Long said. "The only thing that you want to talk about with people after you tape Jeopardy is what happened on Jeopardy, and it's the only thing that you can't talk about."
The Yadkin County native plans to use his more than $75,000 worth of winnings to help the community. He wants to donate to a textbook fund for students at Forsyth Technical Community College, where he is a nursing student.
"Helping with the textbooks is very near and dear to my heart and many others because of how impactful the cost of the textbooks can be," Long said.
He also plans to give money to groups helping evacuees from the Winston Weaver Fertilizer Plant fire.
"The immediate impact of the fire has kind of gone out of the news cycle a little bit, but we're still seeing the impact," Long said.
He also promised his niece a trip to Hawaii and will fund the trip with his winnings.

EAST BEND, N.C. —
Back in October James Moseley received the devastating call that the mother of his child and his son Connor had been involved in a wreck.
"You get that pit in your stomach. It was 3 o'clock in the morning when I got the call and it was just awful," Moseley said. "She was pronounced dead at the scene and Connor, our son, was in the backseat. It's left him paralyzed.”
Three-year-old Connor has been in Brenner Children's Hospital since the crash, paralyzed from the chest down and requiring several procedures including a tracheotomy.
"It’s been awful. I try to take it one day at a time because when you try to think about it all at once or do everything in a week its just impossible," Moseley said. "You know we were hoping he would maybe walk again and stuff, but for now the doctors don’t want me to get my hopes up.”
Moseley is still taking care of his four-year-old daughter at home while going to and from the hospital to visit Connor.
Moseley has had to take time away from work and as medical bills mount and doctors tell him about accommodations needed for when Connor is able to return home, James has organized a GoFundMe page for his son.
"He’s going to need a special bed. I’ve got him on my insurance through work, so that covers a little bit but it’s just all the stuff he needs that starts to pile up," Moseley said. "The way I was raised, you don’t ask for help or anything but when you don’t have a choice, you’re kind of up against the wall."
Connor's condition has improved enough that doctors believe he could leave the hospital in the next month, but he'll then need to rehab at a facility in Charlotte for several months, likely requiring James to take even more time off work.
"But you know we’ll work through it and hopefully there’s gonna be a nurse for 8-12 hours that way that'll cover when I'm at work and hopefully it just all works out," Moseley said.

DENTON, N.C. — A new motocross track may be coming to the Township of Jackson Hill, and riders like Tyler Sink are ecstatic about it, but a family that lives close to the proposed site worries about the impacts.

Cupp and her husband are not the only farmers that are concerned about what this track could mean for the wildlife and their livlihoods
“I think it’s great, I think it’s a great opportunity for somebody new to enter the sport. Also makes it easy for people that live locally to come out and spend time with family and friends and have a great time. Not the safest, but it’s definitely one of the most fun sports I’ve done,” Sink said.
Sink has been riding dirt bikes for most of his life. Two years ago, he decided to get into racing competitively.
“I really got serious about it when I turned 16, and that’s when I got involved in groups and with friends that raced the sport,” Sink said.
Now, because there are a limited number of tracks, anytime Sink wants to ride, he has to make a long drive from his home in Lexington to East Ben Motorsports.
“Usually if traffic is not bad, it takes 45 minutes easily. It’s a struggle some days to get out here, but we try our best to make it,” Sink said.
According to Motocross Track Guide, there are 35 tracks across the state, and the Triad only has eight.
But, practice makes perfect.
“Practice times are a key to the sport with anything. I’m at the age where I can’t really go crazy with it, but it’s still nice to come out and enjoy it so we’re going to keep at it,” Sink said.
While Sink enjoys putting the dirt in dirt bike, Denton farmer Ashleigh Cupp enjoys plucking her products from the ground.
Cupp and her husband have been growing produce and building their forever home in Denton for a year now. They bought over 20 acres nearly two years ago after deciding to leave city life behind.
“Moving from the city of Salisbury from Denton, we came here to become farmers and have a slow kind of quiet country lifestyle,” Cupp said.
There are plans to build a mototrack a couple of miles away from where her Moo Chick Farms sits, and she worries that could upend her quiet lifestyle.
“I know that there’s some positive aspects to it, but I think the negatives far outweigh, you know the noise of course it could even affect our animals, agitation and other farmers. There’s a lot of farmers in the area and they kind of pride themselves on what we do here,” Cupp said.
She said their livelihood could be at risk.
“I kind of worry about the wildlife too if something like that comes 'cause they’re going to displace all these other animals, which could, in turn, if they’re coming to other people's areas like we have issues with deer. So, if you’re displacing all live over there and they come over here and are eating our vegetables, you know that hurts our profit. We’re just a small family farm trying to make it,” Cupp said.
Overall, Cupp knows that change is inevitable and will be good for the town, but she would like for it to be the right kind of change.
“Not that we are not willing for change and growth and all those things, I just think it has to be the right kind of thing and from the beginning I don't think the reasonings behind it were positive or what they were said to be and I think that’s why that’s where it’s come,” Cupp said.

Lawrence “Skip” Long is a modern-day renaissance man who hails from East Bend, NC, just north of Winston-Salem. His varied background makes him a prime contestant on the popular show “Jeopardy!” this week. Tune in Tuesday as he tries to remain the reigning champion after Monday’s win. Long says he will donate to Love Out Loud, the organization working to help those displaced and affected by the fertilizer plant fire in Winston-Salem.
My graduate school work was in actor-created physical theater in a program based on the pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq. My BA is in English from Clemson. After finishing graduate school, I worked in the North Carolina wine industry and then moved to Chicago in 2006 to be closer to a cultural center. In Chicago, I became a sommelier and studied improv at IO and the Annoyance Theatre and comedy writing at Second City. I was a sommelier in a restaurant in Evanston with an extensive wine list.
I spent a year in New Mexico 2009-10, then moved back to North Carolina when my niece was born. I formally retired from restaurants in 2018. I got certified as an EMT in February of 2020.
I’ve watched the show moderately since I was a child. I auditioned once in person in New York City in 2013 and went in the contestant pool. I didn’t really pay much attention to it until the pandemic and I decided to audition again in September of 2020. I got a follow up test in June of 2021 and then a Zoom audition in July/August. I got the call in October.
Starting in June I began to prep by doing 300 Final Jeopardy’s a day using J-Archive. It wasn’t until August that I started to log every game and track my progress. I also used extensive Sporcle quizzes and playlists to prepare. I would prepare daily between August and September and then I got the call at the end of October. About two weeks out, I realized that I was lagging behind in vocabulary and wordplay categories. I added the New York Times Crossword into my regimen. Those wordplay categories can be total wildcards within the rounds.
I owe my niece a trip to Hawaii. I’m finishing up nursing school so this will keep me out of restaurant gigs for the foreseeable future.
Stay-at-home uncle started as a sort of joke to support and undermine my sister’s authority as a parent. I love her, but she used to pull my hair. As the pandemic progressed, it became school proctoring and monitoring for [my niece] while my sister worked. It also entailed day trips to go on adventures and see things. We have taken trips to the Georgia Aquarium to see the whale sharks, we have taken the train to Raleigh, been to the mountains and gone biking. She’s now in sixth grade and I shuttle her around after school between basketball practice and voice lessons.
I will be making a donation to Love Out Loud to coincide with tonight’s appearance. Would love if this exposure got some recognition for the people in need post-evacuation.
