WALLBURG, N.C. —

You couldn't miss the smell of burning rubber Saturday night at a parking lot in Davidson County.

Dozens, if not hundreds, of people were at the Food Lion parking lot off Highway 109, near Gumtree Road, in Wallburg.

In a viewer video, submitted to WXII 12 News, fires were seen in the parking lot while multiple cars were doing donuts as people stood nearby recording.

The Davidson County Sheriff's Office hasn't confirmed if they're investigating any crimes or complaints about the gathering, but Michelle Lonaberger said they responded quickly Saturday night.

"They got there quickly. There was a group down Gumtree Road in Midway and they evidentially left there and went to Wallburg," said Lonaberger in a comment on social media. "I am so very thankful for the Davidson County Sheriff Deputies and the NC State Highway Patrol officers who worked very hard to apprehend and disburse these hooligans destroying private property, risking others’ lives and limbs, putting law-abiding citizens in danger, and destroying the peace of a community we in Wallburg are proud to live in."

Lonaberger, who lives nearby the Food Lion, says this isn't the first time.

"I live just down the road where this garbage happened and I am sick of it. I live half a mile away and I could hear every bit of it inside my house; it was so bad," she said. "It’s been an ongoing issue with cars racing and doing burnouts. I am just thankful that nobody got hurt, as far as I know of."

"Doing burnouts in cars is way better than being out here shooting and robbing," one person wrote. "Don’t get me wrong. Messing up property, I don’t condone that, but let us have something fun to (do) where we can occupy our time -- instead of kids shooting, killing, or doing drugs."

Another said, "Then find somewhere for these kids to hang out. They are not breaking the law; they are not shooting people; they are not rioting. They are kids trying to have fun."

This very same issue was a problem at a Winston-Salem parking lot in early June. Charges weren't filed after complaints.

Others who commented on the same post, showing the stunts Saturday night, said they've seen similar groups elsewhere.

"(It) happened in the parking lot where Family Dollar is in Rural Hall last weekend," one person wrote.

Another said they saw about dozens of cars in one group traveling on the interstate.

"This group was about 25 cars long. They came off the exit ramp on S. Main St. in Winston-Salem and none of them stopped at the stop sign. (I) thought I was gonna get hit!," she wrote.

Law enforcement in Davidson and Forsyth Counties are continuing their investigations after a crowd gathered at a Food Lion parking lot off of NC Route 109 Saturday night, performing burnouts and donuts, which filled the air with smoke and even created a ring of fire on the asphalt.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office says over the weekend, they responded to large crowds doing burnouts on Friday and Saturday, and law enforcement is doing what it can to put a stop to it.

"You're putting your life in danger," said Davidson County Sheriff Richie Simmons. "You're putting others' lives in danger."

Simmons says these events are nothing new.

"It's been all over the state," he said. "When they moved from this location, they moved to other locations. We've seen them do that when they leave, they go somewhere else. It's not just teenagers. It's not [just] young people. It's all ages. And they're from all over."

Videos have been all over social media since the events happened over the weekend. One video shared with WXII shows a person hanging out the window of a car as it spins out into the crowd before revving back up and continuing its burnout.

Mayor Allen Todd of Wallburg says he hasn’t seen anything like this in a long time, and he says to take it somewhere else.

"Don't endanger the private citizens by being selfish and wanting to do something that's appealing to you," he said. "Remember, it's not only you when you're in a public place. It's everybody else around you."

Sheriff Simmons told WXII several people were detained Saturday night. He said his office will continue to gather evidence and then present it to the district attorney’s office to determine if any charges will be filed.

WALLBURG —Twenty-two-year-old Meadow Helmer may be young by industry standards to already be a business owner.

But when you listen to her stories of her youth you know quickly where her determination, drive and work ethic to achieve goals comes — her mom, Rebecca Helmer.

The younger Helmer held the grand opening of Magnolia Boutique in Wallburg on April 29. It was a dream that began many years ago and that took steps to achieve, she said.

“Since I was little, I saw my mom working two to four jobs to support me as a single mom,” she said. “I always went with her to her jobs. She started selling jewelry on the weekends at festivals and shows. I was right beside her. I remember her being a waitress at Outback. I would be in the kitchen wrapping silverware while she waited on customers. I saw how hard she worked. It was just our life.”

Rebecca Helmer eventually went to college to get training so she could get higher-paying jobs. Her daughter went to class with her in the evening.

Through accompanying her mom to all her jobs and college, she learned responsibility and that through hard work, savings and planning, you can achieve business goals. She did all that.

Helmer was a dually enrolled high school and college student at Page High School in Greensboro. She attended high school during the day and then attended classes at Guilford Technical Community College in the evening, earning her associate’s degree in the medical field. After high school and GTCC graduation she worked two jobs, one at the imaging center for Novant Health Winston-Salem and the other as a volleyball coach for the Spears YMCA in Greensboro.

“I needed the money to save for the boutique,” she said. “I have always wanted my own boutique.”

Right before the pandemic closed many North Carolina retailers for months, she purchased an 18-foot trailer she turned into Magnolia Mobile Boutique. She kept working her two jobs Monday through Friday and worked the boutique on weekends. Although most shows, church bazaars and community festivals were canceled after the pandemic began, Helmer searched and went to any event she found.

“I went anywhere within an hour to an hour and half from Greensboro to build my customer base,” she said.

Fast forward three years and she has reached her goal of owning a standalone, permanent location boutique. During her grand opening, the store was packed with new customers from Davidson County and her loyal customers from all over North Carolina who wanted to come support the woman who brought them the latest clothing and jewelry fashions for nearly three years in a mobile trailer.

Her store, at 8363 N. N.C. Highway 109 next to Cupcake Cuties Bakery and Cafe, is filled with women’s clothing in sizes small to 3X from name brands such as Umgee, Zanana, Blu Pepper and more. She also makes many of the graphic T-shirts sold in the store.

There is also a large selection of jewelry, Simply Southern makeup bags, metal tumblers, hats, candles and more. The candles are made with her store’s name on the label by Doodlations, a northern Davidson County candle boutique.

Helmer plans to add Bogg Bags, a line of body lotions and soaps, a few vendors with locally made products and a baby and toddler’s clothing section.

“I plan to keep the mobile boutique trailer,” she said. “I will do four of five big shows or festivals.”

In addition, she plans to expand her social media presence, posting more new arrivals on her Facebook and TikTok pages and adding Facebook Live shows. You can find Magnolia Boutique on social media under its former name of Magnolia Mobile Boutique. Her website is magnoliamobileboutique.com.

The store’s hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

“I’ve always wanted this,” she said. “I want to help grow Wallburg and do community events.”

Wallburg: 3,000 of your closest friends all in one place

There are plenty of stereotypical small southern towns, and if you’ve never heard of Wallburg, North Carolina, you would have no idea it’s a little different from the rest. Locals on the outskirts of our town may argue whether it has one “L” or two, but I promise it’s W-A-L-L-B-U-R-G.

It’s really our own version of Disney World. This is where we come to hang out at the outdoor picnic tables with friends after school and on the weekends. If it’s raining or really cold outside, we just tough it out or hang out in the car.

At one point, there was a rumor of a Taco Bell being built in Wallburg, but nothing ever came of it. We even begged for a Chick-fil-A, but I’m pretty sure we don’t have a big enough population for the franchise to even consider coming our way.

Right across the street from Sheetz, an earth-shattering restaurant was built. Everyone loves this Asian restaurant where the servers know your order if you’re a regular. My usual server knows I’m addicted to the white shrimp sauce, so he knows to bring me extra from the start. When my friend group comes home from college, we all meet here for dinner – as well as around half of our graduating class.

She posted a video of an original song to Facebook, and practically every Wallburg native watched and shared it within 24 hours. Today it has over 22,000 views and almost 500 shares.

On your right you’ll see the (newly built) town hall and Wallburg Diner, and on your left is the elementary school. Don’t blink or you’ll miss it and be in Winston-Salem already.

The counties switch on the far side of Wallburg. This doesn’t sound significant, but it means a lot to those of drinking age. Many have experienced the struggle of going to a gas station located in Davidson County (a dry county), entering the beer cave and finding soda instead.

But just across the street at a little Ma & Pop gas station, there’s plenty of alcohol for sale. Once you cross the county line into Forsyth, you can drink to your heart’s desire.

If you haven’t noticed yet, food joints are a common theme in the town of Wallburg. If you want to hang out somewhere with friends, your main option is to meet at a restaurant or fast food place because there’s nowhere else to go. Or you just drive around town jamming to music. We’ve all done that, too.

When someone in town turns 16 and decides to get a job, they go one of two places – Food Lion or Little Richard’s. Growing up in Wallburg, you’re destined to become a cashier or waiter at some point. Chances are you’ll have to refill the sweet tea of someone from high school who you can’t stand. There’s just no escaping it.

It may not be a name that many North Carolinians know, but those of us who grew up in and around the town of Wallburg know just how unique it is. With an area of only a few square miles, residents are used to knowing all their neighbors, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Some may move away for college and careers, but we’ll always come back for the BBQ, sushi and Sheetz runs.

Here’s What’s Happening in Davidson County: The Posh Bee Children’s Boutique joins with a new women’s clothing boutique to open a second location; sign up for a drop-in breakfast and lunch at the Salvation Army of Davidson County and learn about its ties to National Doughnut Day; look for special events at the Lexington Farmers Market; and rev your engine for the annual Hospice Ride for Angels.

The Posh Bee Children’s Boutique has expanded from the large store it opened in May 2022 inside Evenbrooke Marketplace in Lexington to a second site inside a new Wallburg store, Magnolia Boutique.

“We did this first, because Davidson County is a big county,” said Kim Myers, owner of The Posh Bee. “For some people, getting to Lexington is a little far of a drive. We’re staying in Lexington, and love our customers there. This just opens up availability to our children’s boutique to others without them having to drive to Lexington or into High Point or Winston-Salem. There aren’t any other children’s clothing stores in Wallburg.”

Meadow Helmer, owner of Magnolia Boutique, announced when she opened her store on April 29 along N.C. Highway 109 next to Cupcake Cuties Café & Bakery that she wanted to add local vendors.

“I reached out to Kim about this,” Helmer said. “I knew her from some pop-up events we were both at before.”

Helmer said her boutique gets lots of potential children’s customers who come into her boutique with their mom after a visit to neighboring Cupcake Cuties.

Myers has filled a 9-by-10-foot room in the back of Magnolia Boutique with a sampling of the clothing, toys, books and other children’s items she carries in Lexington. She has clothing for newborns to size 14 for girls and to size 16 for boys.

Helmer has already added other local vendors in addition to The Posh Bee. She has Elk Soap Co. organic soaps and body care items made in Kernersville by Leslie and Eric Kirkman and decorated glass cups and stickers made by Amber Tate of Amber Tate Creations. The Kirkmans made a signature scented soap named Magnolia for the boutique.

In addition, customers who purchase products on The Posh Bee website or from the Lexington store can pick up their items at the Wallburg store if needed.

“We’re just so excited to be able to partner with other small businesses,” Myers said. “We love all out friends at Evenbrooke and making new friends at Magnolia Boutique.”

Held annually on the first Friday in June, National Doughnut Day is just around the corner.

The day was originally established to honor The Salvation Army’s service to soldiers during World War I.

Nearly 250 volunteers traveled overseas to provide emotional and spiritual support, sweet treats, clothes and supplies to troops. The “Doughnut Lassies” hand-delivered the fried confections to the front lines and are often credited with popularizing the doughnut in the United States when the troops returned home from war.

“Now, more than ever, we could all use a little more hope,” said Maj. Ray Morton with The Salvation Army of Davidson County. “On National Doughnut Day, we’re continuing the century-old tradition of bringing comfort to our community.”

This year, The Salvation Army will celebrate in Davidson County by hosting a drop-in breakfast and lunch for the community, which, of course, will include doughnuts.

Breakfast will be available from 8:30-10 a.m., and lunch be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on June 2. Dine-in or to-go options are available. The Salvation Army asks that you RSVP if you are planning to attend by contacting Laura Goins at 336-481-7324 ext. 3 or [email protected].

The Salvation Army’s service to those on the front lines has continued for more than 100 years as the organization continues to provide snacks, hydration and comfort to those responding to crisis.

Registration is open for the 16th annual Hospice of Davidson County Ride For Angels on Saturday, July 15.

The 75-mile motorcycle ride, which winds through Davidson County, will depart at 11 a.m. from Denton FarmPark, located at 1072 Cranford Road, Denton.

Since 2008, the Ride For Angels event has raised nearly $200,000. Proceeds are designated for the compassionate care and grief support of the agency’s patients and families facing a life limiting illness. Annually, more than 200 riders participate along with numerous volunteers and community supporters.

Advance registration for the law enforcement-led ride is $20 per bike and $5 for an additional rider. Registration on the day of the ride will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and cost $25 per bike and $10 for an additional rider. Lunch is included with registration. T-shirts can be pre-ordered or purchased at the event for $15.
