A Triad Cracker Barrel is back open, after a car barreled into its dining room. A customer went to the hospital and the car narrowly missed a server.
LEXINGTON, N.C. — As a server at the Cracker Barrel in Lexington, Stella Rowe never guessed she would ever witness a car come crashing through the restaurant.
The SUV slammed into the dining room during the lunch hour on January 25, only two hours before Rowe was supposed to punch out. She was nearly hit.
Rowe just happened to be at the 'right place, at the right time', barely making it out of harm's way.
"There was a guy sitting at the same table, like a minute before it happened, he got up and I was on my way to clean the table and the car just went through," Rowe said.
She was only about 5 feet away from the car, which ended up in the dining room of the restaurant.
Lexington firefighters were called to the scene around 12:18 p.m. The driver was not hurt but emergency crews transported one customer with minor injuries to the hospital.
After the initial shock of the car leaving a huge hole in the restaurant, Rowe's mind started racing.
"My first thought was like, 'Am I going to lose my job right now?' I'm glad I didn't. I still had to come in for my shift this morning," Rowe said.
Not only is the restaurant back in business, but Rowe says the Cracker Barrel reopened for dinner just hours after the crash. She said by around 8 pm, she had gotten word that repairs on the building were already halfway done.
"Oh yeah! We were open for business yesterday for dinner, we were opened," Rowe said.
Although Rowe and her coworkers came out of the situation without a scratch, some of them were understandably shaken up.
"Today we had a plate break at pretty much the same place where that happened and I was in a whole different dining room and I jumped the moment I heard it, it's like… any loud noise that happens now is freaking me out," Rowe said.
Meaning that while the restaurant may be repaired, it could take some extra time for things to get back to normal.
No charges have been filed at this time. It's still not clear what caused the driver to lose control and crash into the restaurant. WFMY News 2 is waiting to hear more from investigators.

LEXINGTON, N.C. – A pimento cheese pig and a peppermint pig, a doctor pig and a lawyer pig, an Elvis pig and a pig wearing a bikini, a pig taking a bath and of course — three pigs singing Christmas carols. This holiday season, Uptown Lexington welcomes home 70 of its most popular citizens to celebrate Home for the Hogidays and the 20th anniversary of Pigs in the City.
The Pigs in the City project began 20 years ago to pay tribute to Lexington’s title as the pork barbecue capital of the world, showcase local artists and encourage pedestrian traffic throughout uptown. It worked. The Pigs in the City map is the most popular piece of literature handed out at the Lexington Visitor Center. The painted fiberglass pigs are social media stars, showing up in selfies and family photos.
“People love to come uptown and find all the pigs,” says Travis Stewart, executive director of Uptown Lexington Inc. “Local artists David and April Everhart of Art 101 came up with the idea of Home for the Hogidays to honor the project’s two successful decades and encourage people, particularly this time of year, to shop local.”
Over the years, several pigs have scattered, finding homes at businesses outside of uptown or at private residences. But starting Nov. 19 and continuing through Jan. 5, all available pigs will be polished and positioned throughout uptown.
The Home for the Hogidays kickoff coincides with Lexington’s annual Christmas Open House on Nov. 19, 1-6 p.m., where businesses usher in the shopping season. The combined event also includes the lighting of the uptown Christmas tree and the unveiling of a 20th anniversary pig.
Uptown Lexington is a hot spot for holiday shoppers. Lanier Hardware stocks housewares, kitchen gadgets, tools, sporting goods, and more in its sprawling store that takes up the better part of a city block. Missions Pottery sells hand-turned ceramics made in its upstairs studio. All manner of holiday finery can be found at The Backyard Retreat. Army Navy Store covers all your Carhartt workwear needs. Conrad & Hinkle and The Butcher’s Block stock meats, seasonings, cheeses and ingredients for those favorite holiday recipes. LEXINGTON, N.C. — Lexington has been selected to receive a $26,000 grant to help put its first African American neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places.
Kassaundra Lockhart looks over old family photos on the porch of her grandparents' home. It’s something she does often as she tries to collect as many historical artifacts as possible for her neighborhood, Lincoln Park.
“It feels like something I'm supposed to do, is something we should do to protect their legacy, to protect the history of Lincoln Park,” Lockhart said.
She’s taking the lead in putting her neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places, an idea that came from a long-time resident.
“It’s rewarding, it's refreshing to be able to do something like this," Lockhart said.“It’s rewarding, it's refreshing to be able to do something like this," Lockhart said. "It doesn't feel like we started the process in December of ‘21, but it doesn't feel like it was a lot of work."
She wants people to understand how important this neighborhood and its history are.
“It'll be 70 years since (her grandparents') house has been built this year. You know, the significance was back in 1954, in the 1950s, was this was the first neighborhood that was platted just for Black residents in Lexington,” she said.
This neighborhood was a place where everyone was family and looked out for one another.
“It was just a place where everybody, whether you lived here, whether your grandparent lived here, your aunt, uncles, cousins, when you came into the neighborhood, you felt safe. You knew you were protected," she said. "You know, they were men here, were veterans. They were entrepreneurs. They were very much family men. And they looked after one another."
It was once a cow pasture and the land was owned by a white man who wanted to turn it into a Black neighborhood.
“There was a gentleman by the name of Joe White, who apparently owned a lot of land in Lexington, specifically platted this neighborhood for Black residents and received a lot of pushback from that. People were not happy that he was like giving his land to Black residents.”
And he had to get help selling the land to the African American residents.
“He had some people who were going to build houses here, go around to different residents around town, and just tell them about what was going on. And so they were the ones that sold the land for him,” Lockhart said.
More than 60 plots were created for homes, and today 46 are still standing. Lockhart says it’s rewarding to be able to share this story.
“Really amazing," she said. "And it's a blessing because I feel like it's a testament to what my grandparents and their friends established back in the 50s. Of community, neighborhood, family, integrity, honesty, hard work."
"Like, you know, this is just the fruit of their labor and answers to prayers that I know they had back in those days as well,” she said
The $26,000 award from the National Park Service Underrepresented Communities Grant Program will help cover a consultant to prepare the nomination for the neighborhood. The consultant will do surveys, take pictures, talk with people living in the area and gather photos.

“The social district itself, I think it’s a good opportunity and it’s really nice. They can walk around and do some sightseeing and see the town, see some of the local shops,” said David Nichols, The Brewer’s Kettle owner.
The Brewer’s Kettle in Uptown Lexington is one of the first ABC-permitted businesses to register to be a part of the city of Lexington’s social district.
Excited to be a part of the launch, they anticipate it will bring more business to uptown.
“It does also help with some of the spending and the money spent in town. It’s just it really gives a unique and just kind of a fun experience to shopping, makes people feel comfortable.” said Nichols.
So, far five businesses have registered to be a part of the social district.
Lexington city staff is still working to develop and obtain stickers, and signage that will sport the district’s logo and getting cups that will be used for the social district.
“I believe we’re going to have we anticipate anywhere between 14 to maybe 20 establishments. It’s not just bars that participate in the social district. It could be restaurants, anybody that serves alcoholic beverages,” said Josh Monk, Development and Planning Services Manager.
The social district encompasses the Depot District, uptown Lexington, all the way down to West Center Street.
Lexington city staff says it going to be one of the larger social districts in the Piedmont Triad.
“Do we anticipate someone’s going to walk from Smoke and Oak all the way down to the brewery? No, but it just gives that option for people just to go to the places in between. It is a large, large district and if we see anything with that, boundary needs to be changed at a later date because it’s either too large, if we need to expand it, we can” said Monk.
When they become available, signs designating the social district will be put up in uptown Lexington, and the city hopes to have the social district launch by March.

Lexington fire officials said Ronnie Metcalf went missing in the fire.
LEXINGTON, N.C. — A Lexington firefighter was seriously injured while battling a house fire early Tuesday morning. The Lexington Fire Department said firefighter Ronnie Metcalf was flown to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist for life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters were called to the scene around midnight on March 26. Fire and smoke were seen coming out of the back of a house on 309 W. 5th Street.
After a few minutes of battling the fire, an order to evacuate the home was issued, according to the fire department.
Fire crews reportedly evacuated the area and noted that one firefighter was missing.
Teams reentered the structure and found the missing firefighter, Metcalf.
Metcalf was treated for burn injuries on the scene before being flown to Baptist, the fire department said.
Lexington Fire officials said Metcalf is in stable condition with life-threatening injuries.
Metcalf is a veteran firefighter, serving the community for 30 years. He's been with Lexington Fire Department for 19 years.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
