EAST BEND, N.C. — Carly Phillips is strong in her faith, and as the president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Forbush High School, she wants to share that comfort with her fellow athletes as they start the school day. She’s not just a leader on the field but also a leader in school.
“So, it really gets the student body involved, which is something I love doing, because I love helping everybody,” Phillips said.
Phillips has a crammed class schedule with CNA classes at Surry Community College, alongside her high school classes. She has a 4.4 GPA, and her ultimate goal is to become a nurse.
“I want to be able to help people when they're at their lowest point in their life to be able to see them overcome all the difficulties of their medical issues and to be able to just see them get better. It just helps me know that, hey, I'm helping someone get better,” Phillips said.
She’s also forging a new path as a first-generation college student.
“So, my parents sacrificed a lot to be able to get me to the place where I am today. And so I really appreciate them, because I'm able to kind of, you know, understand the difficulties that they had to go through and kind of for me to be able to do that. It just really makes me proud to be able to do something that my family hasn't been able to do,” Phillips said.
As if her schedule wasn’t busy enough, Phillips is also the captain of the soccer team for her school. It's a sport she’s played since she was 3.
“So I’m a really big defensive person, and to really be able to shield people off of the ball and to get that in the past to my teammates and then seeing them be able to see the score, it really makes me happy,” Phillips said.
But she’s about to hang up her cleats.
“I love sports, but I'm not the best at it. It's just mostly something I do for fun, and I kind of know my limitations on it. And plus I want to focus more on my career,” Phillips said.

YADKIN COUNTY, N.C. — Forbush Middle School in Yadkin County is working on creating safer schools after a gun was found on campus last Tuesday.
The Yadkin County Sheriff's Office says a student reported to a teacher that another student had a gun.
We're told no one was hurt and the gun was found safely by law enforcement.
But in this particular incident, both the student and the student's mother are facing charges.
Yadkin County Schools Superintendent Dr. Todd Martin says it's not just up to the district, teachers and staff to keep schools safe, it's also the students.
"We talk to them about their responsibilities, about the responsibility that they have to look out for one another to do the right thing, to keep weapons, to keep guns off of our campuses," Dr. Martin said.
But what about the parents?
The sheriff's office says at the time, the gun was loaded and easily accessible to the student.
They say by statute, anytime a gun is around with minors where someone can be harmed, the gunowner can be charged.
We asked the superintendent if parents play a role in student safety on campus and if charging the mom in this case was the decision.
"If we are going to have guns in our homes, we have a responsibility to secure them first of all, but if we're going to allow young people to use them for hunting or for target practice, then we have a responsibility to teach them how to do so," Dr. Martin said.
Deputies say gunowners should lock away their guns and ammunition separately and educate their children on the dangers of the weapon.
ABC 45 also asked the district how it will ensure this won't happen again and what programs are in place for students who need help.
"We've hired additional guidance counselors this year," Dr. Martin said. "If students are in crisis, we have people on every campus that they can go to. They can reach out through our anonymous reporting system and make a report."
The Yadkin County Sheriff's Office is charging the juvenile with possession of a firearm on educational property and possession of a firearm by a minor.
The mother is also facing a charge of misdemeanor failure to store a firearm to protect a minor.
She's expected to appear in Yadkin County Court on Jan. 12.

Forbush High School of East Bend in Yadkin County continued its domination of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s Youth Hunter Education Skills Tournament.
Forbush’s Senior Red team swept archery, muzzle-loader and shotgun events to total 3,756 points and win the April 24 event at Millstone 4-H Center near Ellerbe.
The state tournament saw high school, middle school and elementary schools tangle for the right to advance to the national tournament at Mansfield, Pa.
“We put a lot of time into (hunter-safety education), and we have a lot of parental support,” said Dink Reavis, the second-year Forbush coach. “Some type of practice goes on seven days a week in compass, maps, orienteering and animal identification. We also spend two to three days a week on the range with shotguns, archery, muzzle-loader and rifle practice.”
Forbush has captured 10 state championships and six national titles, including the 2009 crown.
At the state tournament, students competed in rifle, shotgun and archery, along with an orienteering challenge and a conservation test. Points scored in each event counted toward each team’s final score.
“The degree of the skills exhibited by these young people at the state championships is incredible,” said Travis Casper, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s assistant hunter-education programs coordinator.
Gray Stone Day School of Richfield placed second in the senior division with 3,724 points, with East Forsyth’s Blue team was third with 3717 points.
South Davie Middle School took the Junior High team title with 3,617 points, followed by Park Ridge Christian with 3,610 and Perquimans County with 3,594.
Andrew Welker of Gray Stone Day School captured the individual points championship for senior-high contestants with 772 points. Levi Epps had 767 points for West Montgomery to finish second, while Matthew Spartz’s 767 points and a tie-breaker win earned third-place for Lee Senior.
Hunter Efird of Park Ridge Christian won the individual junior high points title with 758 points. Matthew Flinchum of Starmont was second with 749 points, followed by Logan Jenkins of Ridgecroft Academy with 748 points.
Forbush Red scored 986 points to win the Senior archery title. Forbush Blue was second, followed by Orange County Team 1. Todd Patterson of Forbush Red tallied a perfect 200 to take the individual archery crown. Austin Bryard of Northeast Academy finished second, with Ryan McHenry of Hunt was third.
Gray Stone Day School took the Senior Hunter Skills event with 915 points, with Western Harnett second at 910 and Starmount third at 909. Individually in Senior Hunter Skills, Matthew Spartz of Lee Senior scored 191, followed by Carson Perry and Matt Mason, both of West Harnett.
Perquimans HS captured the Senior rifle team title with 941 points followed by Forbush Red (938) and Farmville Central Blue (918). Kyle Proctor of Perquimans won the Senior individual rifle event with 192 (5X), while Jacob Longworth of Surry Central was second and Todd Patterson of Forbush Red finished third.
Forbush Red tallied 980 points to capture the Senior shotgun crown followed by East Forsyth and Forbush White. Jake Shields of East Forsyth won the individual shotgun while Caleb Reavis of Forbush Red finished second and Tyler Testerman of Forbush White was third.
Forbush Red’s 400 points also grabbed the Senior muzzle-loader title, while Forbush Blue was second and West Carteret was third. John Melton of Holmes High won the individual senior muzzle-loader event followed by Asa Matthews of Farmville Central and Matthew Gould of West Carteret.
Attendance by spectators reached 3,200, the highest number of observers the event has witnessed. Fifty-four school teams participated along with 904 students.
“I think the attention the (Commission) staff and hunter education specialists give to hunter safety in schools has helped get the word out about this event to the schools,” Casper said. “The specialists began an active campaign to promote hunter safety and the tournament in 2002. Since then we have had a 40-percent increase in participation.”
Teams are organized within public and private schools, while home-schooled students and teams representing youth groups, such as 4-H or FFA, can compete, provided they meet eligibility requirements.

After a strong finish Tuesday at Foxfire Golf and Resort in Jackson Springs, there’s a sophomore in the Outer Banks who is halfway to becoming the second.
Katherine Schuster of First Flight High (Kill Devil Hills, N.C.), a sophomore, won her second 1A/2A girls golf title with a four-stroke victory. She was 4-under on the first day and 1-under on Tuesday to finish 5-under (139) on the tournament.
Schuster is no stranger to being on the big stage. In April, she played Augusta National — days before The Master’s began play — and won the national Drive, Chip and Putt competition for girls 14-15.
But to win the title, she had to fend off Mallory Fobes of Forbush High (Forbush, N.C.), who fired a second-day round of 69 (3-under-par) to finish at 1-under on the tournament (143).
In the team competition, it was Gray Stone Day, a charter school from Misenheimer, N.C., that won the state title (fittingly, it happened on the Grey Fox Course). It’s the first team title for the Knights in their program’s history.
Gray Stone’s Lauren Denhard (158) took fourth overall to lead the way for the team champs. Katelyn Griggs carded 182 with Aliza Simpson bringing in a 214 to post a combined score of 122-over 554 and claim the victory.
Currituck County’s Bailee Twiford, who topped Schuster in the East regional, was third (9-over, 153). Roanoke Rapids’ Maci Beaver and Mount Airy’s Alyssa Cox tied for fifth (16-over, 160).
Maiden’s Kayla Yang (19-over, 163), Sophia Laliberte (20-over, 164) of East Lincoln (Lowesville, N.C.) and Newton-Conover’s Camryn Lamp (23-over, 167) and Lauren Hackler (23-over, 167) of Ledford High (Wallburg, N.C.) rounded out the top 10.
Second-place Raleigh Charter finished the tournament with a combined 132-over 564. Grace Greene led the way for Raleigh Charter with a 33-over 177. Lily Rowe contributed a 178 to the team effort with Julia Greene chipping in a 209.
In only its second year of existence, Oak Grove (Midway, N.C.) was third place overall and two strokes behind Raleigh Charter for runner-up honors. Lake Norman Charter (Huntersville, N.C.), Hibriten (Lenoir, N.C.), Avery County (Newland, N.C.), Maiden, North Johnston (Kenly, N.C.) and Carrboro rounded out the team standings.
