The Dallas Mavericks added to their training camp on Thursday as they are lining up to sign undrafted guard P.J. Dozier to a partially guaranteed deal.

Armed with another two-way roster spot and a final regular season roster spot, the Dallas Mavericks look to have some competition take place this coming fall in training camp.

After bringing in German big man Maxi Kleber and Gian Clavell, Dallas added another name to their training camp list as they grabbed a guard from the Lakers Summer League team that was hidden behind the bigger names.

P.J. Dozier is a 6’6″ guard out of the University of South Carolina with a 6’11 wingspan according to DraftExpress. Athletically and physically, he’s exactly what you want in a young prospect.

Even though he went undrafted on draft night, Dozier was projected by many to be a second round pick.

Draft Express had Dozier as their 52nd ranked prospect heading into the draft while The Ringer had Dozier a bit higher at 42.

Dozier made his presence known this past season when he was part of the two-headed monster with Sindarius Thornwell on a South Carolina team that surprised everyone by making it to the Final Four after impressive wins against Duke (2), Baylor (3) and Florida (4).

By electing to go to the lesser known South Carolina, Dozier might have taken some spotlight off of his career, but he made up for it come tournament time.

In his sophomore season at South Carolina, Dozier averaged 14 points a game on 28 minutes a night. But it’s his defensive game that could be intriguing at the next level.

After Dozier went undrafted, he came on board with the Los Angeles Lakers’ Las Vegas Summer League team where he only played a couple of games due to a lingering ankle injury. Also, he was stuck behind a Lakers Summer League team that was “loaded” in comparison to Summer League talent and would go on to win the Las Vegas Summer League title.

Now, after coming out of Summer League, the Dallas Mavericks are jumping at the opportunity to add a player that was projected by many to hear his name called on draft night.

This is exactly the type of player Dallas needs to target for their remaining training camp invites.

Dallas, like some other teams around the league, decides to sign players to partially guaranteed deals as they lock them into training camp in the fall. He will come in right away and compete for an open two-way roster spot or potentially the last regular season roster spot.

Dozier’s size and athleticism brings intrigue at 20 years old for the back court. Even though he needs improvement on his offensive game, this is exactly the type of flyer guy that Dallas needs to target.

I like Dozier’s early chances of impressing the brass in Dallas this fall.

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- JFK Towers is a low-income Section 8 community that nearly 200 older residents in North Durham call home.

But behind JFK's walls, some neighbors told ABC11 that it is an unsafe, filthy mess.

"Makes me feel like I'm in a third-world country," Clayton Meador said. "This don't feel like America at all."

Meador's neighbors snapped images of a broken elevator sign, leaking air-conditioning units that have left their floors stained and wet, as well as dumpsters and trash chutes overflowing with garbage that some tenants said is attracting insects and rodents.

"My mom was awakened with bites on her arms," Zara Dozier, who lives at JFK, told ABC11.

Dozier said her mother has been living with her since April because of bed bugs.

"She said she didn't know what was happening," Dozier said. "Where they were coming from."

Some neighbors told ABC11 off camera that the property management firm, Millennia Companies, is addressing these issues.

ABC11 contacted Millennia's office, and the company said that starting Monday, "a new vendor will begin routine pest control on a quarterly basis or as needed."

Millennia said it will also schedule K-9s to find rodents. As for the leaky AC units, the company said, "We addressed the leaks until a solution was found."

According to Millennia, it began managing JFK Towers in January, with plans to acquire the community from its current owner, Global Ministries Foundation.

Federal officials told ABC11 that GMF has failed to properly invest in and update its properties to meet HUD standards.

Millennia said once it owns JFK, it plans to update and revitalize the property.

"I can wait it out. I guess," said Meador, who moved to JFK last year.

Millennia did not give ABC11 a timetable on when it will take ownership or what the renovations will look like.

As for the broken elevator and overflowing trash, Millennia said the building has four elevators and hasn't verified whether one is out of service.

The company said trash is collected several times a week.

The sixth annual forum will focus on state revenues

The NC Leadership Forum at Duke (NCLF) convened this past Thursday its sixth annual statewide cohort of state and local leaders who will come together four times over the next year to address important questions regarding state revenue and how we fund state and local government in North Carolina.

The NC Leadership Forum seeks to strengthen democracy and restore a culture of healthy policy making by working with state and local policy leaders across the political, nonprofit and business sectors. The goal of the program is to build the skills and relationships that leaders need to work constructively with across partisan and ideological divides.

NCLF alumni have reported that relationships formed through NCLF have helped support bi-partisan legislative initiatives in the last few years, and that NCLF discussions have provided a foundation for more effective advocacy.

“This year, we hope to build upon our successes and continue to develop North Carolina’s capacity to be a model for a different approach to politics in the future,” said NCLF Director Deborah Goldstein.

This year’s cohort includes several state legislators from both sides of the aisle, the state treasurer, secretary of revenue, president of Piedmont Community College, several local county and city leaders, and numerous business leaders and nonprofit advocates.

During their two-day session on campus Thursday and Friday, participants got know each other and shared concerns raised in their communities regarding state revenue. Duke President Vincent Price and Professor Frank Bruni addressed the group.

The cohort’s subsequent three sessions will take place around the state, with a concluding meeting at Duke. Participants will explore where they have similar values and where their values are in conflict, brainstorm ideas to address the concerns that have been raised, and consider the tradeoffs between various proposed actions.

Unlike many civic engagement programs, NCLF encourages participants to spend the most time talking about why they disagree, showing that leaders can preserve their political loyalties and still successfully engage with each other across partisan lines to address key issues.

Last year NCLF hosted a statewide cohort that focused on health care and also expanded its programming beyond its annual statewide cohort with a pilot test of two regional programs focused on housing challenges in western North Carolina and the Triad. NCLF will again host regional programs on housing in other parts of the state in spring 2023.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Like so many others, Dakota Dozier's entire livelihood is on hold. An offensive lineman for the Minnesota Vikings, Dozier calls Raleigh home in the offseason.

"I know my options are limited, but I'm doing the best I can with it," said Dozier of his daily workouts. "And that's kind of how I've approached it. Just go out here, do the best I can and be as fit as possible and so when I can get back in the weight room, hit that hard and get back on the field, hit that hard."

Staying strong and limber is obviously of the utmost importance for Dozier, so he's adjusted on the fly.

"Jump rope, sandbags, weighted push-ups, different things just out here on my sidewalk," he said.

Those 40-pound sandbags serve a variety of purposes in his sidewalk gym. Another one of his exercises showcases his athleticism and doubles as a great ad for the Chevy Silverado's robust tailgate. It can handle 312 pounds, no problem.

Dakota has a health and exercise science degree from Furman University that he's also putting to work in partnership with 3M. He films himself doing experiments that kids at home can replicate.

"They said 'hey -- that'd be great, we can pair football and science and schooling in this time of COVID.' So they reached out and there's a list of different experiments I could do at home. I chose to do how we breathe."

Dozier is active with other causes as well in the Vikings community. It's a voluntary part of his job that he greatly enjoys.

"The NFL platform obviously affords you the chance to connect with different organizations," he said. "And it's just an awesome platform to use because I love giving back. We're tremendously blessed to do what we do and any way we can give back is awesome."

Dozier said he trusts the scientists charged with making the decisions about when the NFL could return in some form. In the meantime, he's enjoying the extra time with his wife and 20-month-old-son, Dak Jr.

"We just don't know when this will end. And when we'll be safe again to get back in the locker room, get back to the facility and practice," Dozier said., "So, whenever the time comes, I know I'll be able to hit the ground running."

BOONE, N.C. - Terry Dozier's chances of making the Charlotte Hornet roster are slim at best.

There's too many big names ahead of him. Too many guaranteed contracts ahead of him.

But Dozier, who a year ago was getting ready for his senior season at the University of South Carolina, is biding his time for as long as he possibly can. "I've pretty much been doing my thing and playing hard," said Dozier, who was invited to the Hornets training camp as a free agent. "I'm going to continue doing that. "They haven't said a whole lot to anybody about who they might or might not keep." The 6-foot-9, 210-pound Dozier has been playing small forward throughout the first four days of camp at Appalachian State in Boone. The problem is, that spot is already held by two of Charlotte's most solid players from a year ago - Kelly Tripucka and Robert Reid. Tripucka led the team in scoring and finished 13th in the NBA, averaging 22.8 points per game. He still has two years left on a contract that pays him nearly $1 million per season. Reid also proved valuable to the Hornets in their first season. He averaged 14.7 points and was a consistent outside shooting threat. Although he's 34 years old, Reid signed a one-year contract for $500,000 last week. So where does that leave Dozier? "I came in to this league looking to play small forward but I'll do whatever they want," said Dozier, who came to USC after being a high school All-American at Baltimore's Dunbar High. "There's no question that this team has a lot of talent for an expansion team," he said. "And it's just not the young guys like Rex (Chapman) and J.R. (Reid). They have a lot of talented veterans like Robert, Kelly and Jerry (Sichting). And they help out the younger players. "You need a mixture of veterans and young guys." The question is, how long will Dozier remain one of those young guys on the team? Hornet coach Dick Harter brushes off questions about when the next round of cuts will come. Charlotte has 17 players in camp. It must be down to a 12-player roster by Nov. 2. "I'm more worried about what we're doing as a team than who we're going to cut," said Harter. "The cuts will sort themselves out." Harter did say he has a better group of free agents in camp this year. "We've got better people in general," said Harter. Although Dozier had his share of attention at South Carolina, he isn't as heralded as J.R. Reid or Chapman. In fact, after a disappointing senior season with the Gamecocks, Dozier was passed over in the NBA draft. He left USC with a four-year scoring average of 13.9 points, eighth on the school's all-time list. Harter apparently doesn't plan any more cuts until the Hornets open their exhibition season Thursday in Waco, Texas, against Dallas. Those plans are subject to change, however. "I'm just keeping my hopes up as far as making the team goes," said Dozier. "I'm just praying that my talent will impress them enough to want to keep me. "But I'm also keeping some other avenues open. If things don't work out here, I may go over to Italy and play for a year or two." Dozier would at least like to remain on the Hornet roster until Saturday. The Hornets travel to Columbia to play the Washington Bullets Saturday night. "I know there's a lot of people looking forward to me coming back," said Dozier. "And I appreciate that. I really enjoyed playing at South Carolina. People were good to me. And making this team would allow a lot of those people to see me play in the NBA." Dozier remembers watching the Hornets win their first game ever a year ago in an exhibition game at Columbia. "I went to that game while I was in school. And now when they come back through there, I'll be playing with them. "I guess things really change fast." But Dozier hopes things stays the same for a while. He wants to stay in a Hornet uniform.

HORNET HOOPS: The Hornets conclude their stay in Boone with a morning practice session today. They will return to Charlotte before leaving for Texas tomorrow. Approximately 2,700 people gathered to watch the Hornets scrimmage last night. Harter offered this evaluation of the first four days of camp: "We're evaluating people every minute of every day. I see us being a better team in some ways but there are some things I don't like. I'm happy up until now but you can't say you're in great shape after four days. We're still very ragged..." The biggest story of training camp has been the play of point guard Andre Turner. With Michael Holton injured, Turner is competing to make the team as the third point guard behind Muggsy Bogues and Jerry Sichting. The Hornets waived free agent forward Charlie Sitton, the first cut of camp. Sitton never played at full speed because of a pulled hamstring. After playing Washington Saturday at 7:35 p.m. at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, the Hornets play the Bullets again Sunday afternoon in Rock Hill. The 2:05 p.m. game will be at Winthrop Coliseum. The Hornets are looking for a new play-by-play announcer. Gary Sparber resigned that post because of recurring problems with his voice. TERRYD.OZ
