CLEMMONS, N.C. —
The Carolina Panthers are back on the field, and fans across the Piedmont Triad are ready for another season.
As Carolina opened its preseason against the Arizona Cardinals for the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, Panthers fans gathered at Mossy’s in Clemmons to watch the action and share their expectations for the team.
“Super excited about football season,” fan Shannon McCarson said. “Best time of the year.”
Other fans said the Panthers ended last season with encouraging performances.
“Based off last year, we got pretty far in the playoffs, so I feel like everyone is excited to see what we’ve got this year, new draft guys,” said Willie Purvis, a host at Mossy’s.
“The Panthers looked good finishing out the season last year,” one fan said. “We’re hoping we can build on it this year.”
Another fan said the team appears to be headed in the right direction.
“It’s on the up and up,” the fan said. “We had a decent season last year, so I’m ready for it,” said Bryson Mickey.
The excitement is not limited to the fans. Mossy’s employees say they also look forward to working on game days because the crowd’s energy can make the bar feel almost like the stadium.
“Game day’s crazy,” Purvis said. “People are at the bar, everybody’s together — even different teams. Everybody’s yelling. It’s very fun.”
With so many games playing at once, employees also help customers find seats near the right television.
“They’ll come in, and they’ll say, ‘Are the Panthers playing on this TV? Are they on this TV?’” Mossy’s manager Jeff Willey said. “So, we have to seat them based on that.”
While customers may compete for the best view, fans say Mossy’s has enough televisions to make nearly every seat a good one.
“You come here on Sundays, you can watch every game,” one fan said. “They have so many TVs. It’s a great place to be.”
For local supporters, the return of football means it is once again time to rally behind Carolina.
“The Panthers are Carolina’s team, so we’ve got to get ready for the Panthers,” Mickey said.

FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. —
Residents in Forsyth County are speaking out against a proposed asphalt plant in Clemmons, raising concerns about its proximity to their homes and potential environmental impacts.
The plant is planned for a location near Gun Club Road and Kinnamon Road, which residents say backs up to their residential areas, sitting just hundreds of feet away. They expressed worries about air quality and water pollution, noting that the land backs up to Mud Creek.
"Seeing that I live 622 feet from where the proposed plant is going to be built, I'm not wanting it to be built there; I think there's better use for the land," said Jeff Banks, a Clemmons resident.
County commissioners acknowledged the concerns but stated they have no vote in the matter.
The company behind the project, Maymead, has already submitted an application for an air quality permit. Clemmons Mayor Pro Tem Michelle Barson said the decision is not up to the Clemmons Village Council but noted that if the state approves the air quality permit, the project could move forward. The land is already zoned for general industrial use, which includes asphalt plants.
"A lot of us are not against the asphalt or against the plant, just not the location they've chosen," said Doug Geiger, a Clemmons resident.
Residents are still hoping their voices will be heard, urging commissioners to make recommendations.
"We just want everyone to make really thoughtful decisions about their constituents and make sure we can all stay healthy," said Andrea Vail, a Clemmons resident.
Barson also emphasized that the Clemmons Village Council and staff will prioritize the safety of residents but reiterated that they have no say in the decision.
Separately, several people attended the meeting to discuss a proposed landfill in the Salem Chapel Road area of rural Forsyth County. The landfill, intended for disposing of land-clearing materials instead of burning them, was rejected by commissioners, who denied the special permit for the project.
