The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania-based bargain outlet store Ollie's recently announced it is acquiring 40 Big Lots locations across the country as the retail chain navigates bankruptcy.
"Everything about these stores lines up well with our business and growth strategy. These locations are the right size, come with favorable lease terms, are located in existing and adjacent trade areas, and have long serviced value conscious consumers,” Eric van der Valk, president and CEO of Ollie’s, said in the release.
Big Lots was the fourth-largest home goods retailer in the U.S. when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2024 and had 1,392 stores at the beginning of 2024. Big Lots now has 381 stores across the U.S., according to its website.

Florida Big Lots stores likely to stay open
In December, Big Lots announced it would be closing all of its stores. The company has been slowly closing stores across the U.S., including dozens in Florida, over the past several months as it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
More than 600 stores have already closed. However, about 200 Big Lots stores are expected to stay open, according to USA TODAY.
Per another list created by Gordon Brothers, some Big Lots leases are expected to be taken over by Variety Wholesalers Inc., a retail company headquartered in Henderson, North Carolina.
