There are reasons Darin and Brooke Aldridge are known as "The Sweethearts of Bluegrass."
The Aldridges are young, beautiful and so much in love. The Cherryville, N.C., residents, who married in 2008, are considered one of the best duos in acoustic music.
The Darin & Brooke Aldridge Band will perform at Randy Wood Guitars on June 2. In 2011, the International Bluegrass Music Association nominated the Aldridges for the Emerging Artist of the Year award, and the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music nominated them as gospel group, album and song of the year.
Their self-titled album propelled them into the top five on bluegrass, Americana roots and gospel music charts, and one of the songs was still No. 2 on the bluegrass chart a year later. Last summer, the Aldridges were the most played bluegrass artists on Sirius/XM radio.
Their latest CD is "So Much In Between," and both albums feature both secular and gospel bluegrass. The band features Chris Bryant on banjo, Rachel Johnson Boyd on fiddle and Dwayne Anderson on upright bass.
Darin Aldridge first played music in public when he was 6 years old. He began with piano and drums and added band instruments while he was in school.
Later, Darin gravitated towards stringed instruments, learning to play banjo in order to join his first band, Straight and Narrow. He was encouraged to switch to mandolin when he showed an aptitude for it while teaching someone else to play.
Since then, teaching has been one of Darin's consistent activities. He now teaches in his studio as well as at the Gaston County School of the Arts in Gastonia, N.C.
His first touring band was Acoustic Syndicate, which played a range of jazz, blues and folk rock, touring up and down the East Coast. He later joined the Country Gentlemen and toured with them for seven years until Charlie Waller's passing in 2004.
Soon after Waller's death, a group of Country Gentlemen alumni formed The Circuit Riders, which performed together from 2005 to 2008 and recorded the album "Let The Ride Begin."
Darin also has filled in on stage with Blue Highway, Mike Snider, Paul Williams, The Isaacs, Mac Wiseman, Jim Lauderdale, George Hamilton IV and Blueridge, to name a few. He's produced a solo CD called "Call It A Day" and has been nominated for several awards.
Brooke Justice Aldridge grew up in the mountains of Avery County, N.C., just a few miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Her voice carries the lilt of the mountains along with the sophisticated sounds of a singer with experience way beyond her years.
Despite winning many competitions, Brooke never really knew how much she loved to sing until she was a teenager. In 2004, she competed in the regionals of the Nashville Star competition in Columbus, where she finished third.
In 2007, Brooke recorded her first CD, "I'll Go With You." She has a degree in Early Childhood Education from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., and currently teaches pre-school while maintaining the touring schedule.
