(WLOS) — On March 21, Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina (FCNC) took a significant step in preserving Western North Carolina’s natural landscape by conveying a conservation easement to the North Carolina Land and Water Fund. The easement permanently protects the 1,439-acre Pinnacle Mountains West property, which FCNC acquired at the end of 2023.
83 ACRES ALONG FRENCH BROAD RIVER WILL BE CONSERVED AFTER YEARS OF PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT
Located across the southern McDowell and northern Rutherford county lines, the property is an essential part of FCNC’s strategy to create a connected network of conservation lands extending from the South Mountains to the Blue Ridge Mountains. This protected area adjoins a 960-acre property purchased by FCNC in 2022, both of which will play a key role in the development of the Wilderness Gateway State Trail. A section of this long-distance public trail system is currently under construction on Pinnacle Mountains West.
"Pinnacle Mountains West offers exceptional ecological value," said Dr. Michael Gaffney, Conservation & GIS Specialist for FCNC. "The land features two large North Carolina Natural Areas designated as ‘Very High’ and ‘Exceptional’ by the Natural Heritage Program, as well as headwaters of the Broad River Basin. These areas are critical for wildlife and biodiversity, and this conservation easement ensures that they will be permanently protected."
The easement is made possible by funding from the North Carolina Land and Water Fund, the NC Complete the Trails Program, and the Conservation Trust for North Carolina. The protection ensures that these significant natural resources will remain safeguarded for future generations.
As part of the broader conservation initiative, the property also contributes to the future Wilderness Gateway State Trail, which will provide public access to the area’s remarkable natural beauty, including landmarks such as Morgan Creek and Ledbetter Mountain.

This is the view from the WXII 12 News Sauratown Mountain tower camera. Several viewers living near the Pinnacle area received messages from the North Carolina Forest Service about the controlled burn, but many Stokes County residents will continue seeing the smoke from several miles away as it rises higher in the sky.
North Carolina Forest Service Public Information Officer Phillip Jackson has confirmed there is a 30-acre prescribed burn underway off of Brims Grove Road near Pinnacle.
Rockingham County Ranger Larry Roberson also confirmed the smoke residents are seeing is a prescribed burn on Brims Grove Road on the western side of Sauratown Mountain. Rangers with the North Carolina Forest Service started this prescribed burn earlier this morning during slightly higher humidity values.

Roberson said they chose today for a prescribed burn on this tract of land due to lower wind speeds, and the area has too much dry underbrush like dead leaves that could become fuel for wildfires. This area of Brims Grove Road has a combination of trees and dry grassy areas. Several North Carolina Forest Service personnel including rangers are manning fire engines according to Roberson to prevent the fire from spreading outside the controlled area on Brims Grove Road in Stokes County. He also said the rangers are professionally trained to conduct prescribed burns. A controlled line was dug with a bulldozer this morning to help keep the fire in check.

The movie wasn't just filmed in WNC. Many residents of the area were hired as extras for the movie. "Summer Camp" producer Dori Rath told the Hendersonville Times-News that over 1,000 extras from the area were featured in the film.
Now, the BCTDA is working with Visit North Carolina, the statewide tourism promotion agency, to develop a media campaign to promote Western North Carolina's summer camps in anticipation of the movie's May 31 release, President and CEO of Explore Asheville Vic Isley said during the BCTDA's May 29 meeting.
"We really are looking forward to kicking off summer and the summer season with this extra boost and getting Asheville in hearts and minds of potential visitors and families this summer," Isley said, noting the BCTDA had coordinated with local content creators and influencers to talk about WNC's summer camps while developing a new landing page for the movie.

"Summer Camp" stars Oscar-winning actresses Diane Keaton and Kathy Bates as well as Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Alfre Woodard.
Keaton, who was spotted in Asheville several times during filming for "Summer Camp," posted on social media expressing that she enjoyed her time in the area, writing "LET'S PUT IT THIS WAY... I'M HAVING FUN IN ASHEVILLE" in a late-April 2023 Instagram post.
The film also stars Eugene Levy and Beverly D'Angelo.
According to previous reporting by the Times-News, Rath said the film crew fell in love with the WNC mountains while scouting locations for the movie.
"The area is chock full of summer camps, and each camp has more than 4,000 families that attend," Rath said.
According to Rath, WNC locations where crews filmed "Summer Camp" included Camp Pinnacle and UNC Health Pardee in Hendersonville and Blue Ridge Community College in Flat Rock.
According to the Times-News article and a news release on "Summer Camp," the movie tells the story of Nora (Keaton), Ginny (Bates) and Mary (Woodard), who have been best friends since they met at summer camp as children.
They jump at the chance to reunite when a summer camp reunion arises, after seeing less and less of each other over the years. Each of their lives might not be where they imagined, but one thing is for sure — Nora, Ginny and Mary need each other, and summer camp reminds them why.
Camp Pinnacle, a crucial location for "Summer Camp" filming, is a 126 acre campus in Flat Rock, about 10 minutes from DuPont State Forest.
